I was at the launch of Canon’s many new products for 2015. I would be sharing on the Canon EOS 760D and EOS 750D, their products specifications, key features and my personal thoughts/views on the Canon EOS 760D and EOS 750D.

Here are some thoughts/views on my initial hands on with the Canon EOS 760D and EOS 750D

  • The Canon EOS 760D, in my opinion, is designed to be in between the entry level DSLRs (3 digit model series, e.g. EOS 700D) and mid/semi pro series DSLR (2 digit model series, e.g. EOS 70D)
  • Small, compact and lightweight
  • A good number of features packed inside a small body DSLR
  • Ideal for travel photography
  • An ideal back up camera

The Canon EOS 760D and 750D are good DSLR camera models to consider if you are planning to upgrade from a compact camera or starting to learn more about photography.

Let me share with you some key features/aspects of the Canon EOS 5DS R and EOS 5DS from the press release information –

Pushing boundaries of quality with a 24.2 megapixel CMOS sensor

Raising the bar for photographers venturing into the realm of DSLRs, the EOS 760D and EOS 750D are the first cameras to offer the highest pixel count of 24.2 megapixels in the Canon EOS entry lineup. Paired with the latest Canon DIGIC 6 image processor, users of these DSLRs will be able to produce images with excellent quality and vibrant colours.

The ISO speed of these two cameras ranges from 100 to 12,800 (expandable to 25,600). The broad spectrum of speed settings allows for greater versatility in shooting scenarios ranging from portrait shots to outdoor sports, and even low-light environments such as aquariums. Harnessing the power of the CMOS sensor and DIGIC 6 image processor, image quality remains excellent, even when shooting fast-moving subjects in high-speed burst shooting, at a maximum speed of 5 frames per second (fps).

Optimal light exposure with EOS Scene Analysis and a new 19-point AF system

In addressing the needs of entry-level photographers, Canon has upgraded the EOS scene analysis system. Sensitivity and accuracy have been enhanced for Automatic Exposure (AE), with features such as skin tone detection for determining human subjects and keeping focus on faces rather than surrounding objects.

The incorporation of an RGB + IR metering sensor also reduces AF error caused by different light sources and improve precision of white balance. This sensor detects both colour and infrared light, and automatically analyses the information to ensure photographs are always optimally exposed.

The EOS 760D and EOS 750D operate on a new 19-point all cross type system. With an increased number of detection points, subjects will always be kept in sharp focus, even when they are moving about within the frame.

For greater control, users may choose between 3 AF modes: single-point AF (for more precise focusing and still subjects), Zone AF (with 5 zones to choose from) and the fully automated 19-point automatic selection AF (useful for subjects with unpredictable movement, such as children and pets).

Maintain precise focus in Live View with the new Hybrid CMOS AF III system and Touchscreen LCD panel

Photographers accustomed to shooting photos with digital compacts and smartphones may not immediately adjust to using a viewfinder. Users of the EOS 760D and EOS 750D will however, find shooting on Live View via the LCD screen comfortable. The new Hybrid CMOS AF III system enables the camera to swiftly and easily focus during Live View shooting. This new system is approximately 4.8x[1] faster than Hybrid CMOS AF II technology on the EOS 100D and almost as fast as Dual Pixel CMOS AF on the EOS 70D. The AF area covers approximately 80% of the screen (vertically and horizontally), so that unpredictable and moving subjects such as children or pets can still be detected and focused on the screen even when they are off-center of the frame.

Additionally, both cameras come equipped with a swivelling Vari-angle LCD touch panel that can be rotated, which allows users to adjust settings, such as focus selection and shutter speed with just a simple touch of the screen. This also allows users to frame high and low angle shots with ease. To further enhance continuous shooting performance during Live View, the EOS 760D offers Servo Burst shooting mode, which helps keep a subject firmly in focus while shooting at a speed of up to 3fps. To help users keep track of moving subjects, the LCD display does not automatically turn off between shots.

Outstanding image quality in Full HD video

To help videographer capture dynamic and moving subjects, the Hybrid CMOS AF III system, also known as Movie Servo AF when in video recording mode, remains active. This enables the user to keep subjects in constant and sharp focus, and reduces in hunting even when subject is in motion.

Another unique feature of the EOS 760D is its ability to shoot High Dynamic Range (HDR) movies, which is useful for scenes with a wide dynamic range of brightness. HDR enables photographers to retain more detail in overexposed shots via the process of combining two frames of differing exposure.

Digital zoom, a feature usually only available in still photography, is enabled while capturing video on the EOS 760D. This feature extends the range of the lens from approximately 3x to 10x, allowing photographers to capture subjects such as wildlife from a distance.

Both the EOS 760D and EOS 750D record video in popular MP4 format. This ensures maximum compatibility with devices such as smartphones and social media platforms such as YouTube and Facebook. To help users create fun video which they can share effortlessly, the cameras offer a Video Snapshot function, which captures 2, 4 or 8-second video clips and merges them together to form a composite video clip in an album. These clips can then be easily arranged into an entertaining video for sharing with friends.

Key Differences between EOS 760D and EOS 750D

A key difference between the EOS 760D and EOS 750D lies in the interface. The EOS 760D is the first entry-level EOS camera to incorporate a top LCD panel in addition to the main display. This sophisticated top LCD panel displays important information such as ISO speed, exposure level and battery life.

Similar to higher-end DSLR cameras, operating the menus and settings in the EOS 760D is achieved through a Quick Control Dial and Main Electronic Dial – an advanced method that allows users to adjust their settings and search for images with maximum convenience and minimal effort. Conversely, the EOS 750D features a navigation button control scheme, which is significantly more familiar to users who frequently use entry-level cameras.

Designed for the connected world

To cater to the needs of avid social media users where content sharing is paramount, the EOS 760D and EOS 750D are both equipped with Wi-Fi, which allows for fast wireless connections to networks, smart devices and printers.

The near field communications (NFC) function on both cameras also enables easy pairing with other NFC-enabled devices, and facilitates files transfers via Wi-Fi through a simple tap. Users would for example, be able to transfer their images onto the Canon Connect Station CS 100 for convenient file storage and viewing with just a simple tap of the camera on the Connect Station.

The new CameraConnect app, which merges the functionality of the old CameraWindow and EOS Remote app, now allows users to control the EOS 760D and EOS 750D remotely and upload content onto social media via their smart devices with a one-stop, fuss-free solution.

Optional accessories for a customized experience

The EOS 760D and EOS 750D are supported by a range of optional accessories to enhance their functionality. A new and optional battery grip significantly extends shooting time with its prolonged battery life, while also allowing users to accomplish vertical shooting with greater ease.
