Sony CyberShot RX100 II Review

The Sony CyberShot RX100 II is based on the successful and popular predecessor, Sony CyberShot RX100 with enhanced picture quality and convenient new features such as Wi-Fi and easy One-touch smartphone connection with NFC. The Sony CyberShot RX 100 II was a handy and compact digital camera, I brought it out with me for my daily use, leisure and attending events during a two weeks period with the Sony CyberShot RX 100 II review unit.

There are a lot of features packed inside the Sony CyberShot RX100 II and one of the key features is TRILUMINOS™ Colour technology that gives the RX100 II even richer, more natural colour reproduction with the new generation of BRAVIA televisions featuring TRILUMINOS™ Display. The technical specifications for the Sony CyberShot RX100 II are attached below for your reference!

Here is a compilation of my thoughts and views on the Sony CyberShot RX100 II –

Pros

–       Small and compact

–       Light aluminium camera body

–       Hot shoe can be useful for external flash and electronic view finder

–       Material and built of the RX100ii is pretty sturdy and solid

–       Front ring allows the photographer to change the aperture without touching the buttons behind (in manual mode)

–       3.0-type White Magic™ LCD tilts up or down. The tilt screen is useful and allows the photographer to hold it in different positions e.g. waist level or at upper body level when screen is tilted 90 degrees

–       Panoramic function is great function to have and it is very useful

–       Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar glass optics

–       The outputs from the Sony RX100M2 is pretty good in quality and sharpness

–       Auto focus is pretty fast

–       Optical SteadyShot Image Stablisation compensates for camera shake

–       With the Sony PlayMemories Mobile App, the photographs can be viewed and shared with family and friends

–       Full HD 24p/25p movie for rich, cinematic video footage

–       TRILUMINOS™ Colour for richer, more natural colours

Cons

–       LCD User interface has too many features and it can be confusing

–       Buttons and Controls Interface on camera body can be tricky and a bit difficult to remember (it takes a while to get used to it)

–       Tilt screen is not able to flip upright or out to the side if the need arises

–       Photographs shot at ISO at 12,800 and at aperture wide open at f/1.8 is grainy

–       A little big on the heavier side for a compact digital camera

–       Price is a bit on the higher side for a compact digital camera

–       Adding an electronic view finder or optical view finder adds to the overall cost of the camera

 

From the various photographs that I took with the Sony CyberShot RX100 II over the 2 weeks, it had been a fun and interesting time with this compact digital camera. The “straight out from camera” jpeg file photographs that I took had been impressive, quite accurate in the photograph output and rich in colours. With the specifications and features packed inside the Sony CyberShot RX100 II, in my personal opinion, the RX100 II belongs to the range of high end powerful specifications compact digital camera at a quite a value for money price tag.

The Sony CyberShot RX100 II is an ideal compact digital camera for travel and daily camera for leisure usage. For street photography fans, you can consider the Sony CyberShot RX100 II as a street photography camera and you have the option to add the optical viewfinder or electronic viewfinder (at an additional cost). The interface and controls might be a bit tricky to master and might take a while to get use to its interface and controls. With the Sony PlayMemories Mobile App, you can choose to share with your family and friends on the social media channels and platforms!

If you are planning to look for a compact digital camera, the Sony CyberShot RX100 II is definitely worth your time to look into for your consideration, that you can compare with other similar compact digital camera models, on the technical specifications and pricing.
