Canon today, on the 6th April 2017, announced a new lens to their family of lenses, the EF-S35MM F/2.8 Macro IS STM. This is a macro lens and it is also the first EF-S lens designed with built-in Macro Lite technology.
Personally, I think this would give photographers (those using EF-S camera bodies) more choices when they are choosing macro lenses.

Canon today introduced the new EF-S35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM, a compact macro lens with built-in macro lights for aspiring photographers to discover the expressive world of macro imagery. The lens is also equipped with Hybrid IS technology to ensure that users will be able to capture sharp and vivid images without worrying about camera shake even when taking macro pictures at very close range. The accessibly priced lens is highly adept at capturing nuanced details such as the rich textures of textile and food, and the intricacy of small insects. With a perspective of a 56mm equivalent standard lens, it also makes an ideal lens for capturing natural everyday moments and can also be used for scenery, portrait and night photography.

Lighting up the details
With a built-in LED light on both the left and right side of the lens, the EF-S35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM is designed to excel in macro photography. With this technology, the subject is illuminated from the front, resulting in balanced lighting, minimal shadow effects and an accurate reproduction of vibrant colours. Additionally, advanced users can choose to toggle between one or both lights using the Macro Lite On button on the side of the lens to control the lighting intensity by choosing to turn on left, right, or both lights to deliver beautiful images evoking greater dimension and contrast.
With the ability to control the optimal level of light, the EF-S35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM will empower users to shoot bright and beautiful pictures of everyday items like flowers, food or close-up portraits without the hassle of carrying along special equipment like external speedlite that may cause shadowing during macro photography.
Smart design achieves exceptional image quality
With 1.0x magnification, the EF-S35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM shoots at 1:1 life-size magnification, capturing finer details and textures of the subject. The large f/2.8 aperture captures light proficiently even in dim conditions, enabling users to create unique blurring effects that adds an artistic dimension to their images. With a working distance (the distance between the subject to the tip of the lens) of just 30 mm, coupled with a tapered design, photographers will be able to get within close proximity to their subjects for greater dramatic effects without worrying about undesirable casting shadows.
Furthermore, the incorporation of the molded-glass aspherical lens in the EF-S35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM adeptly corrects aberrations and ensures high quality images with edge-to-edge sharpness.
Steady hands
The EF-S35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM is equipped with Hybrid Image Stabilizer to mitigate the effects of camera shake arising from handheld photography. The Hybrid IS compensates for both lateral and angular shakes to ensure the reproduction of beautiful and crisp macro images.
This image stabilizing feature, also a mainstay in Canon’s suite of high-end lens, provides stabilizing effect of up to 4 stops shutter speed[1] to deliver smooth close-up photography without the use of a tripod. In addition, the EF-S35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM is equipped with a lead-screw type STM motor, assuring users of stable, seamless and sharp footage while shooting macro movies. The motor produces minimal noise, which means users can now capture ambient sound without any sound distractions from the motor.
Pricing and Availability
The EF-S35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM will be available at all Canon authorised dealers in end-May and pricing will be advised at a later date.
