Canon announced EOS 800D

Canon recently announced a few new cameras to their line-up, one of them was the Canon EOS 800D, the latest DSLR that caters for beginners/entry level enthusiasts in photography. The Canon EOS 800D had come a long way since the Canon EOS 300D (it’s one of the Canon DSLRs that I used and it’s my first DSLR too!). While I had moved on towards the double digit series Canon DSLR before settling down on the Canon EOS 1D series (1D Mark III and 1DX).

I had first hand experiences on how much it has improved and changed over the years. Today’s entry level Canon DSLRs are really packed with many more features that used to be found in the double digit DSLRs. It’s lightweight and easy to use for beginners/entry level enthusiasts, therefore, it would not be too daunting for them to start off with this entry level DSLR. Personally, I also started off with the entry level Canon EOS 300D too before advancing upwards the Canon DSLR models!

Let me share with you more information on the Canon EOS 800D and if you are a beginner/entry level enthusiast, take a look at them –

Canon announced the launch of the EOS 800D, the newest DSLR designed for beginners looking for superior quality images and the convenience of mobility. Designed with simplicity as a focus, the EOS 800D boasts a host of advanced functions such as the cutting-edge Dual Pixel CMOS Auto-Focus (DAF), a first for an entry-level DSLR model, a 24.2 megapixel CMOS sensor, and the latest DIGIC 7 image processor propels the EOS 800D to produce brilliant pictures and videos. The lighting fast AF speed will empower users to capture dynamic scenes and fast moving subjects.

Weighing at approximately 485 grams (body only), the EOS 800D is a great option for photographers who enjoy the portability and convenience which comes with a lighter camera, while the touchscreen interface makes it easy for budding photographers to navigate the functionalities of the camera.

“The EOS 800D debunks stereotypes that DSLRs are large and cumbersome, winning over fans to DSLR photography with its attractive and user-friendly interface that is designed for users to focus on enjoying the shooting experience,” said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore. “Behind the clean and simple interface lies a smart system that photographers can trust to deliver sophisticated imagery.”

AF technology accentuates creativity

With the DAF system supporting sharp and accurate focusing, users will have little difficulty keeping subjects in clear focus. Dual Pixel CMOS AF is an intelligent system that constantly tracks moving subjects, ensuring moving subjects will always be in focus, and also functions when shooting video. A 45-point AF system, which covers almost the entire frame, works with the optical viewfinder to complement DAF for precise focus and accurate tracking of photo subjects, thus keeping the subject in perfect focus.

The new DIGIC 7 image processor is paired with the high sensitivity 24.2 megapixel APS-C sized CMOS sensor for high picture clarity even in intricate detail. The EOS 800D sets class-leading standards with the ability to support normal ISO speeds from 100-25,600, enabling users to capture a wide range of image expressions.

A nimble performer, the EOS 800D boasts of the world’s fastest AF focusing speed of 0.03 seconds during live view*, so users can expect to capture stills with unrivalled precision. It also achieves one of the fastest-in-class continuous shutter speed of 6 fps, assuring users of capturing the perfect moment even in dynamics situations.

Intuitive touchscreen UI and features

Designed with an intuitive touchscreen interface, users will find it easy to navigate and adjust the camera settings. A new shooting mode guide, complete with shooting tips, thorough explanations and graphics, will help beginners familiarize themselves with the camera and enhance their understanding of the different shooting modes. More experienced DSLR users have the flexibility of switching off the simplified user interface.

Taking the perfect group photo will be a breeze when the new Group Photo scene mode is activated. This function automatically adjusts the shutter speed and ISO speed so that users can shoot at a range of f/8 to f/1, thus enlarging the depth of field and ensuring all subjects are in focus.

The vari-angle LCD screen on the EOS 800D can be tilted 180 degrees and rotated, giving users the flexibility of capturing photos from high or low angles for creative expression and selfies.

Exceptional movie shooting capabilities

With DAF and movie digital image stabilization (IS) technology, the EOS 800D empowers users to deliver beautiful expressions in full HD resolution at a smooth 60 fps. The EOS 800D is one of the first DSLR in Canon’s EOS line-up to be equipped with movie digital IS. The function uses an in-built gyro sensor to detect and correct camera shake via electronic compensation for higher stability to produce more vivid images.

The time lapse movie function allows users to shoot fun and on-trend movies that encapsulates the changes of their photo subjects, through the passage of time into a compressed format. By setting up the camera to capture a shot at specific time intervals, users may document varied scenes such as movement of clouds or even the traffic flow at a busy intersection.

Connectivity for convenience

With Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, users can transfer images and videos from the camera to the smart devices and upload them onto the Canon Image Gateway, social media platforms and cloud storage. And by using the Canon Camera Connect app, users have real-time control of camera settings such as shutter speed, focus selection and self-timer and more.

In addition, EOS 800D features Bluetooth Low Energy which maintains constant connection to a compatible smart device at a low power consumption. With this constant connection, users can view images, start remote capture, from the camera, even when the camera is in Auto Power Off mode. Smart devices with Bluetooth can wake the camera up, and switch to Wi-Fi for browsing and viewing images or perform remote capture ( with live view).

Users can also use Bluetooth to perform basic remote capture (no live view), control image playback and slide show when the camera is connected to a TV or projector via smart devices or the new BR-E1 Bluetooth wireless controller.

Bundled kit lens – EF-S18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM and optional accessory – BR-E1 Bluetooth wireless controller

The EOS 800D comes packaged with the new compact standard zoom lens – EF-S18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM. This new lens is significantly smaller than its cousins in the same class, making it the perfect kit lens for a new user DSLR who might be concerned with bulk.

Optional accessories for the EOS 800D include the new BR-E1 wireless controller, which uses Bluetooth connectivity to operate the camera from anywhere within a 5m radius.
