My visual storytelling/photography journeys with the Canon EOS 5 series began with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III in 2010, followed by EOS 5DS, EOS 5DS R, EOS 5D Mark IV and the EOS R5. The Canon EOS 5 series is not just esteemed, they are a trusted and well-received camera series used by both professionals and serious enthusiasts. 

In my personal opinion, the EOS R5 that was launched in 2020 along with the EOS R6, set the standards, pace and tone of Canon’s full-frame mirrorless EOS R family growth, with this tagline for EOS R5 and EOS R6 – “Born to Rule”. Both EOS R5 and EOS R6 were impressive in terms of specifications and performance. 

With the announcement of the EOS R5 Mark II, this new and powerful camera would pick up the baton and continue the legacy of Canon’s esteemed EOS 5 series and the Canon EOS R full-frame mirrorless family into the next generation of both stills photography and videography.

Canon EOS R5 Mark II

The Canon EOS R5 Mark II has groundbreaking features that makes it outperform its predecessor EOS R5. 

Power-packed New Core for Unprecedented Performance

The EOS R5 Mark II is powered by the new 45-megapixel back-illuminated (BSI) stacked CMOS sensor, leading the host of feature upgrades. 

The new Accelerated Capture System, consisting of the all-new DIGIC Accelerator and the DIGIC X image processor, can process high volumes of data at unprecedented speeds. Together, the two pave the way for powerful new features and enable resource-intensive processing that sets new standards for AF performance.

Dual Pixel Intelligent AF for Smarter Subject Detection and Tracking

Dual Pixel Intelligent AF system

Like the EOS R1, the EOS R5 Mark II is also equipped with the Dual Pixel Intelligent AF system, which leverages the Accelerated Capture system and deep learning. This system greatly improves subject tracking and detection during video and stills shooting. It is highly accurate and capable of tracking the subject even for scenes that were challenging for the EOS R3, like when subjects cross each other and block the main subject. 

Register People Priority Function

Videographers and photographers shooting events and concerts will benefit from the Register People Priority function, as it prioritises a preregistered person for subject detection and tracking even when they are in a crowd and have their face turned sideways. The new Action Priority AF mode will automatically switch the focus point to subjects that are shooting, passing, or heading, helping sports photographers capture decisive moments during dynamic, fast-paced sports such as soccer, basketball, and volleyball.

Intuitive and Highly Responsive AF Control

For the first time ever on a “5 series” camera, Eye Control AF allows user to shift the AF frame by simply looking at their new subject to focus on. Updated optics and an improved line-of-sight detection algorithm have doubled the detection frame rate as compared to the EOS R3, thus allowing faster, steadier eye movement detection.

Both photographers and videographers can also store and recall a specific focus position by utilising the focus preset function, which was only previously available on super telephoto lenses. They can register and recall up to six different AF-related settings, which allows for a quicker response to different situations. 

Cinema Industry Standards for Next Level Video Production

In addition to the creative flexibility offered by its internal 8K DCI 60p RAW video recording support, the camera also provides ample industry-standard recording modes and options. Several professional production-oriented Cinema EOS system features were also included for professional filmmaking and video production needs. 

The new 4K DCI 60p SRAW recording option uses the camera’s full horizontal angle of view and provides a less resource-intensive option for projects requiring RAW video’s post-production latitude. Users can simultaneously record smaller 2K, a newly included function or Full HD proxy video files to the camera’s SD card slot and 8K or 4K main files to the CFexpress Type B slot. 

This allows users to edit footage more efficiently. The EOS R5 Mark II possesses the ability to create spectacular 4K videos with oversampled 8K sensor output and 2K/FHD videos from oversampled 4K. In addition, the camera showcases beautiful slow-motion scenes in 4K quality (up to 5x slower) or in Full HD (up to 10x slower) with the 4K 120p or Full HD 240p. 

Elevate Your Visual Storytelling

Both the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II are the first EOS system cameras to offer 10-bit Canon Log 2, which provides more vivid colour reproduction. Favoured by many filmmakers for its wider dynamic range (16+ stops) and better preservation of shadow detail, Canon Log 2 expands the possibilities of post-production to meet your boundless artistic visions. 

Besides the existing Picture Style colour profiles, the EOS R5 Mark II is also equipped with the Cinema EOS system’s Custom Pictures. The latter allows LUTs (lookup tables), including custom 3D LUTs for Cinema EOS to be applied in-camera even when recording in Canon Log 2/Log 3, or HDR formats so users can better visualise the output video while shooting.

Easy integration with Cinema EOS

The EOS R5 Mark II uses the new XF-AVC S/XF-HEVC S file system, which has similar specifications as the Cinema EOS file system. This system enables workflows that are incompatible with the conventional MP4 format and streamlines the multi-camera projects editing process where Cinema EOS cameras are utilised.

Cinema EOS tools that provide detailed exposure information, such as the waveform monitor, false colours, and zebra display, have also been incorporated. Users can fine-tune exposure more accurately on set and improve efficiency on multiple camera shoots where exposures must be matched.

Seize the moment

The pre-recording feature, inherited from Cinema EOS cameras, will benefit users tasked to capture defining moments. This feature captures a scene up to 5 seconds before recording starts, and can be controlled remotely via the Camera Connect mobile app. There is no need to record continuously, which means smaller file sizes, effectively reducing the time users spend reviewing their footage. 

Other significant video features:

• Reduced rolling shutter distortion: The new BSI stacked sensor’s faster readout reduces rolling shutter distortion by approximately 40% compared to the EOS R5. This provides seamless action footage and fast camera movement without wobbly artifacts.
• Apple ProRes RAW external recording up to 8K 30p: This feature is supported through an HDMI Type-A output terminal. Users can simultaneously record 2K DCI proxy files to the CFexpress card.
• Linear PCM 24-bit 4-channel input support: This provides high-quality audio and flexibility for multi-microphone setups that are suitable for interviews and simultaneous ambient noise recording.
• Heat dissipating structure: The camera adopts a structure that dissipates heat buildup, allowing reliable recording even at the highest resolutions.
• Optional cooling fan for longer high-resolution recording: A cooling fan, Cooling Fan CF-R20EP (sold separately) extends 8K recording times, allowing up to 120 or more minutes of 8K 30p video to be recorded. It also enables limitless 4K 60p video recording with no overheating restrictions.
• Support for the latest wireless/wired communication protocols (Wi-Fi 6/6E and 2.5G Base-T wired LAN): These allow high-speed transmission of large photo and video files to a PC or FTP/FTPS/SFTP server, which is suitable for news reporting and editorial work especially with time constraints.

In-Camera Image Enhancements

The EOS R5 Mark II improves workflow efficiency and image quality through in-camera noise reduction and image upscaling that uses deep learning technology. 

• Neural Network Noise Reduction reduces the noise in high-ISO RAW images while retaining detail and resolution.
• In-camera Upscaling function that quadruples the number of pixels in the image, increasing the resolution to up to 179 megapixels with minimal impact on image quality. 

Combine both to generate cleaner, high-quality extreme crops that retain stunning clarity and detail, further empowering users to unleash their creativity.

Other significant still image features:

• Blurred/Out-of-focus image detection: This function is applicable to JPEG and HEIF images shot with the electronic shutter. It detects and rates images with faces that are blurred or out of focus. Users will also find it easier to choose the best shots from the many captured via improved high-speed continuous shooting performance with the electronic shutter.
• Dual Shooting: Users can simultaneously record 16:9, approx. 33.2-megapixel JPEG still images while recording Full HD 30p videos. This improves work efficiency for users who require still photos and videos of the same event when time is limited.

Delightful and reliable to shoot with

Designed to perform reliably on demanding shoots, the EOS R5 Mark II is built like the EOS R5, with similar dust- and drip-resistant weather sealing to withstand challenging weather conditions. For added protection, users may consider pairing it with the new Shoe Cover ER-SC3. The Rain Cover ERC-R5S / ERC-R5L will also come in useful for users shooting with the EOS R5 Mark II under rainy conditions for a prolonged period. The blackout-free EVF is twice as bright as the EOS R5’s and is equipped with superior anti-fog performance, which provides a brighter, clearer view of the scene even in unpredictable weather conditions. The Eyecup ER-KE can be added to provide a better EVF experience by blocking out stray lights to improve visibility and achieve more precise Eye Control AF.

The EOS R5 Mark II features a 5-axis In-Body IS (Image Stabilizer), with a newly designed mechanism and improved algorithms that increase its effectiveness when compared to the EOS R3. When shooting with a compatible RF lens with Optical Image Stabilizer, users can expect up to 8.5 stops’ equivalent image stabilisation so handheld images where tripods are not available will look even better up close.

To meet increased power requirements, the EOS R5 Mark II is powered by a new battery, Battery Pack LP-E6P, which has a higher current discharge but keeps the same form as other LP-E6 series batteries and can be charged with the LC-E6 charger. The USB Power Adapter PD-E2 (sold separately), can also charge the battery inside the camera and supplies more power than the USB Power Adapter PD-E1.

The USB Power Adapter PD-E2 can be combined with the DC Coupler DR-E6P, a new DC coupler for LP-E6 series-type batteries, to supply power directly to the camera during long shoots such as events or time-lapse recording. For enhanced operability such as vertical shooting support, users can combine the EOS R5 Mark II with:

• Battery Grip BG-R20: A battery grip with weight balance, buttons, and multi-controller position optimised for vertical shooting. It is compatible with the EOS R5/ R6 Mark II/ R6.
• Battery Grip BG-R20EP: A battery grip with the same features as BG-R20, with an additional 2.5G Base-T Ethernet port to support high-speed wired communication. This meets the needs of professional users who require wired network compatibility and better support for vertical shooting.

Just like my previous Canon cameras reviews, I would bring them out for as many different types of photography shoots and outings, putting them to the test in various photography genres. Starting my own short visual stories collection titled, “A TGH Photography x Canon EOS R3 Explorer Series Production” of my Canon EOS R3 review adventures and journeys.  

First up was Rainbow illumiNation – Celebrating 1 year of Very Momentary Exhibition, supporting local creative artist Wei and his creative artwork creations, World Water Day 2022 and Earth Day 2022 – Invest In Our Planet, bringing wildlife photograph, nature, conservation and sustainability topics out from the photographs that I shot with the Canon EOS R3. There’s also an urban / city landscape photography exploration with the RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM lenses that I was also reviewing together with the Canon EOS R3, titled “Singapore Cityscapes (600mm and 800mm perspectives).

The Canon EOS R3 is more than just a fast and powerful full-frame mirrorless camera for the professionals in journalism and sports that place high standards and demand for very fast speed action and accuracy, it’s also for the wildlife, visual story tellers and professional photographers in other genres as well, to capture the priceless moments and presenting them to the world.

You read my visual stories from my EOS R3 explorer series production, now let me share with you my points, thoughts and views from this Canon EOS R3 review.

Aesthetics 

For photographers who own/used the EOS 1D series, the Canon EOS R3 will feel natural and at ease in your hands. It’s just like the EOS 1D series, the looks, feel and ergonomics. The EOS R3 is lighter in weight as compared to the EOS 1D counterparts. The EOS R3 EVF is bigger in size, that is to accommodate Eye AF.

A lightweight magnesium alloy body making the EOS R3 very rugged, tough and durable, able to withstand extreme conditions along with its weather sealing features. Just like the EOS 1D series predecessors, you have the faith and trust in the EOS R3 to rough it out and deliver the goods in extreme conditions. 

Years ago, I felt that the flip screen would not look professional on the EOS 1D series. Fast forward today,  I take back my words, the flip screen is so useful and versatile, providing flexibility and more ways to approach photographing in various situations. The flip screen on the EOS R3 won’t make it less professional, my personal opinion is that this would be most welcomed by photographers in today’s demand for both stills photography, videography and content creation.

There is the joy stick on the EOS R3, it’s really a joy to use, along with the iconic wheel button on the Canon EOS camera bodies that we are familiar with. This combination of using the wheel button + mode dial + front dial + joy stick is more than just an ease to use, it’s handy and great joy to use. 

The Canon EOS R3 gives you full control on the camera body using the LCD screen, giving you another user interface option when operating the Canon camera. The best of both worlds of having both physical controls, dials, buttons and modern technology using touch screens.   

Operations

The legacy of the EOS 1D series has been passed on to the EOS R3, the fast speed auto-focus (AF) with precision and accuracy on the subjects that you are focusing and photographing. Inside the EOS R3, Canon has raised the mirrorless AF speed and accuracy to another level, we saw it in  Canon’s EOS R5 and R6 AF capabilities. The EOS R3 has set the bar higher on another level, it’s not just going to amaze, they are what professional photographers in journalism, reportage, sports, wedding, fast-paced events, wildlife photographers would want to have in their professional series EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera. Not just for professionals, serious enthusiasts photographers would welcome the EOS R3 too! This EOS R3 is capable to line-up in the 1 digit series of the EOS R family, why is not named as EOS R1 and named as EOS R3 instead? Close to the end of my article, I would share my personal thoughts and views on this.

Shutter mode

Mechanical / Electronic 1st curtain / Electronic 

The mechanical shutter is awesome, the EOS R3 electronic shutter is even better. You can just put to electronic shutter without too much worries and concentrate on capturing the moments and actions up to 1/64,000 at 30 fps with its electronic shutter. 

Silent shutter function on / off

There is a silent shutter function that allows photographers to switch on to use when the shooting situation requires. The EOS R3 has a soft shutter sound, it’s almost negligible that you won’t notice it much when you are using it.

Servo AF 

1 – Versatile multi-purpose setting

2 – Continue to track subjects, ignoring possible obstacles

3 – Instantly focus on subjects suddenly entering AF points

4 – For subjects that accelerate or decelerate quickly 

Auto – Tracking automatically adapts to subject movement 

Subject to detect 

People / Animals / Vehicles / None

With the above four selections, photographers can switch the settings inside the EOS R3 as and when required. Dedicated settings for photographing people, animals or vehicles would be most welcomed by photographers, they are fine-tuned to assist photographers in capturing their subject matters at right moments.  

Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system along with EOS iTR AF X brings Canon AF to another level with improved with Eye Detection AF (Human), Body Detection AF and Head Detection AF. Portraiture photographers would most welcome this improvement when they put to “People” mode. 

For wildlife photographers, the “Animals” to detect mode would vastly help in focusing and capturing wildlife in action. Motorsports photographers, the “Vehicles” to detect mode would be most welcomed by them. 

In addition to EOS R3 fast and accurate AF, the ability to choose the subject to detect makes it even easier and a bigger breeze for photographers. Switching to subject – animals, when shooting wildlife made it so much easier for me even when shooting small birds from far.

Auto-Focus Capabilities/Areas 

Spot AF / 1-point AF / Expand AF area / Expand AF area: Around / Flexible Zone AF 1 (Square) / Flexible Zone AF 2 (Vertical) / Flexible Zone AF 3 (Horizontal) / Whole area AF 

For those who are familiar with Canon AF system, you would know the different AF capabilities and AF areas that you can choose from. One of the EOS R3 strong capabilities that I like a lot is the Flexible Zone AF functions that give the photographers more control and specific areas to concentrate the focusing of their subjects. 

The Flexible Zone AF (Square, Vertical or Horizontal) can be versatile and useful in situations such as wildlife photography.

In-Body IS

The EOS R3 is equipped with an In-Body IS (IBIS), that was first incorporated in the EOS R5 and EOS R6 camera bodies. When coupled with lenses that has image stabilisation (Optical IS), they can achieve an image stabilisation effect of up to 8 stops. That would be most welcome by photographers who need to shoot in handheld low light situations. 

One of the features on the wish list of photographers, Canon’s IBIS capability is now equipped inside the professional EOS R camera bodies. An excellent and most welcome feature for photographers and videographers, yet photographers and videographers may forget about the IBIS that’s aiding them in their low light shoots. 

Eye Control AF

The return of Canon’s Eye Control into the EOS R3. Before you are able to utilise this function, you need to do a calibration with your eye. The calibration is pretty straight forward and not too difficult to complete the Eye Control setup. 

Using Eye-Focus to control the AF point, it’s a hit and miss for me. While I welcome this useful and great capability inside the EOS R3, there were times when I couldn’t fully control the AF point, making me frustrated. 

Some points to highlight would be, I am wearing glasses thus it might affect the eye-control functionality. I also have a short review period, that doesn’t give me a lot of time to get used to the Eye Control and fine-tuning it further to my liking and preferences. 

Eye-Focus can be very useful in situations when the photographer prefers to do it through  the viewfinder, concentrating on focusing on his subjects, pressing the button to photograph the priceless moments that they are seeking/waiting for, and preferring not to utilise the wheel dial and joy stick. 

ISO Levels

ISO 100 – 102,400

The EOS R3 ISO level has a range from ISO 100 to 102,400. Although this would allow the photographer to shoot at high ISO, the tolerance and preferred ISO level to use, can be personal and subjective. My personal tolerance lSO level is 51,200, I would avoid using higher ISO beyond this level whenever possible. 

Record func+card/folder selection 

Equipped with dual card slots, one for CFexpress, one for SD card, it’s very useful if you choose or prefer to record stills photography and video separately into different cards. The future for high speed shooting, volume and buffer recording is with CFexpress card, their pricing is still pretty high at juncture in time, we need to give them more time before the prices would come down, making it more affordable. 

I usually prefer a dual card slots system, giving me the options to record into 1 card or both cards when the situation requires. Having a dual card slot is a great backup function to have on the camera.

Video

6K RAW (6000×3164) 50.00 fps / 25.00 fps / 24.00 fps (PAL)

4K-DCI (4096×2160) 50.00 fps / 25.00 fps / 24.00 fps (PAL)

4K-U (3840×2160) 50.00 fps / 25.00 fps (PAL)

FHD (1920×1080) 100.00 fps / 50.00 fps / 25.00 fps / 24.00 fps (PAL)

The EOS R3 can record videos up to 6K RAW, onto the CFexpress card, while 4K video can be simultaneously recorded on an SD card. In the current environment and demands, shooting in 4K would be sufficient for most situations in both work and leisure videography. The ability to shoot in 6K RAW is an added bonus for the photographer/videographer should the need arises.

In my personal opinion, the EOS R3 primary function is a stills photography camera for fast paced action. The video is a secondary function that allows the user to record videos, switching in between photography and videography as and when required.

Thoughts and Views

For existing Canon EOS 1D users, EOS R5 and EOS R6 users, it’s very easy and fast for these group of photographers to get used and acclimatised to the Canon EOS R3. The functions and user interface (UI) are very similar (if not most of them are the same). If you are familiar or owns a EOS 1D series, the EOS R3 will be second nature to you, it’s almost exactly the same!

The EOS R3 is a very fast and accurate full-frame mirrorless camera Sports, wildlife and press photographers will love this camera, that would also be for wedding and events photographers as well. AF for mirrorless cameras have improved tremendously over the years, the revolution has started in the EOS R5 and EOS R6 full-frame mirrorless cameras. In the EOS R3, they have gone up another level higher and better.

Videography for EOS R3 complements the photographer, when they have to shoot videos on top of their photography. 

The EOS R3 is first and foremost a very high speed, very fast AF powerful stills camera, just like its predecessor from the 1D series, the legacy lives on in the EOS R3 even though it’s not named together as the Canon 1 digit series. 

Due to the changing media landscape, media consumption and demand, while stills photography still has an important role to play, video consumption has risen exponentially, whether it’s your filmmaking production level, serious amateur using YouTube/Vimeo, or even using TikTok, Instagram Reels. 

Videography in a hybrid digital mirrorless camera complements the user in their quest to capture both stills and videos for the work/projects required or for the leisure user to have both forms of media production for their social media.  

Eye-Control / Eye-Focus

The EOS R3 eye-control feature that allows photographers to use their eye and focus on their subjects through the EVF. Personally, I like this feature a lot, adding on another method to focus on moving subjects, beside using the joy stick or LCD touch screen, ideal for photography genres such as wedding and events photography.

While it is most welcomed as an additional method to help the photographer focus on their subjects during their shoot, this is like a rough diamond that still needs refinement and improvement with technological and firmware upgrades. 

High ISO 

The EOS R3 maximum ISO is 102,400, allowing photographers to push the limits of their photography in low light situation. Personally, my tolerance level for the usable high ISO is 51,200, the ISO levels beyond that are too grainy for my personal liking and usage. 

1/64,000s 

The EOS R3 can shoot up to an amazing speed of 1/64,000s with its electronic shutter. Is this a myth or a marketing gimmick, some might ask? No, it’s not a myth and not a marketing gimmick. When I had a first taste of 1/64,000s high speed action during my initial short hands on session with the EOS R3, I was more than blown away, I wanted to test it out in the field.

Although during my short review period with the EOS R3, I couldn’t fully put the 1/64,000s shutter speed to more tests/shoots, I managed to photograph some scenes using 1/64,000s.

Shooting at 1/64,000 might sound very far fetch for many photographers, this is true to a certain extent, not many photographers will or need to shoot at 1/64,000. Nevertheless, for wildlife and sports photographers, 1/64,000 might just be the key element for them to nail that shot that they always wanted to shoot e.g. the very fast motorsports action scenes, an artistic scene of water droplets hitting the water or the kingfisher diving right at the moment into the water catching its prey.

Or like me, photographing the fireball sunset shining brightly over the horizon, overpowering the bright sunset and creating an artistic silhouette. 

Why is this not R1 and named R3?

During my first short hands on media session with the EOS R3, after my first touch, feel and testing, the EOS R3 feels and works like the Canon EOS 1D series, I was impressed with specifications and capabilities. During the time whereby I had the EOS R3 for review, I was thinking much further and deeper, why is this not named EOS R1 and named EOS R3 instead? 

A monster and powerful full-frame mirrorless camera for the sports, wildlife photographer, as well as for press photographer and photojournalist too. The EOS R3 is more than ready, it can safely and proudly take over the EOS 1D X series as the Canon’s top range camera yet it sits just below the EOS 1D X Mark III, based on how Canon name their cameras.

The EOS R3 has placed huge expectations for the rumoured EOS R1, what would the ultimate Canon flagship full-frame mirrorless EOS R1 camera be like in the near future?

On a personal and professional basis, is it time for me to fully switch over to Canon mirrorless by replacing my EOS 1D X Mark II with the EOS R3?

Canon has put together a wide range of product lineup, from high-performance flagship models that are highly trusted by professionals, to entry level models that allow users to enjoy high image quality shooting with easy operation. Besides that, users have access to a wide and rich selection of RF and EF series lenses that make possible a wealth of creative expression. Canon continues to support the diverse needs of customers.

In September 2003, Canon introduced the EOS Kiss Digital (EOS Digital Rebel or EOS 300D in other regions). This was the dawn of digital SLR cameras, a groundbreaking camera that brought about a breakthrough in the digital SLR market, a competitively priced digital SLR that featured a compact, lightweight design, capturing the top share of the global market and setting the stage for growth in the digital SLR market.

From then on, Canon has continued to grow and develop, launching a range of groundbreaking products, including the professional EOS-1D series and the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for digital SLR video recording. In October 2018, the Canon EOS R System was born from Canon’s desire to construct the ideal lens mount and maximise the appeal of its new RF lenses. Canon has since continued to expand the range of imaging creativity and new possibilities for visual expression, including the release of Canon EOS R5 – the first camera to feature 8K video recording (2) in July 2020.

In 2021, Canon announced the Canon EOS R3 full-frame mirrorless camera (released in November 2021). This camera features the high performance and reliability demanded by professional and enthusiast users, along with eight new RF lenses (3). Through new launches such as the Canon EOS VR System, Canon further expanded its lineup and they managed to secure the No.1 share of the global market for the 19th consecutive year.

Canon will continue to refine its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technology while further strengthening and expanding the EOS series of cameras and RF/EF series of lenses, opening up new avenues of image capture to meet the needs of increasingly diverse users and to promote the spread of photo and video culture.

Expanding the Ultra-wide Range to 14mm with 0.38x magnification

Regardless of whether you are looking to shoot indoor or outdoor landscape and architecture, the RF14-35mm f/4L IS USM can capture more of the surroundings in a limited space or further emphasize the perspective of a scene as it is 2mm wider than its EF counterpart, EF16-35mm f/4L IS USM.

Due to its short back focus design, the RF14-35mm f/4L IS USM can shoot with a minimum focusing distance of approximately 0.2m and a maximum magnification of approximately 0.38x at 35mm.The rear focusing system suppresses focus breathing and the low weight of the focus lens group increases AF speed for comfortable close up shooting.

Up to 4 seconds Shutter Speed with The EOS R5 and EOS R6

The RF14-35mm f/4L IS USM is the first RF lens to cover the ultra-wide angle range of 14mm that features an Optical Image Stabilizer with a CIPA standard of approximately 5.5 stops. When used in tandem with the EOS R5 and EOS R6, the image stabilisation effect is approximately 7 stops, through coordinated control of the In-body Image Stabilizer and Optical Image Stabilizer – making handheld shots at up to 4 seconds shutter speed at 35mm a new possibility.

This also allows for sharper images such as when shooting in dark places where a tripod is unavailable or unsuitable, such as in tight and crowded spaces. The RF14-35mm f/4L IS USM’s Nano USM focus drive system also delivers high-speed, high-precision still image AF and smooth movie AF.

Higher image quality in a Compact and Light Package 

Despite being 2mm wider than its EF counterpart, Canon’s latest RF lens is approximately 12% shorter and lighter than the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens. 

The RF14-35mm f/4L IS USM boasts a wider angle than previous models, which is achieved through effective arrangement of three aspherical lenses, which includes one ultra-low dispersion (UD) lens and three UD lenses (including the UD spherical lens), while maintaining the high image quality that has become the mark of Canon’s camera lenses.

Instead of common vapour-deposit coatings, the RF14-35mm f/4L IS USM features the use of Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) and Air Sphere Coating (ASC) for its anti-reflective properties, reducing flare issues such as ghosting when shooting in brightly lit environments. 

With its dust and drip resistant design, the RF14-35mm f/4L IS USM is able to withstand most outdoor conditions, giving users peace of mind. Sealing is applied to lens joining sections and switch panels to prevent water and dust from entering.

For ease of maintenance, the surface of the lens’ front element has a fluorine coating, which repels oil and water – oil that adheres to the lens can simply be wiped off with a dry cloth, without the use of a solvent.

Personal Views

The RF14-35mm f/4L IS USM is built on a legacy of Canon wide angle zoom L lenses over the decades, from the EF16-35mm f/2.8L, EF17-40mm f/4L and EF16-35mm f/4L, this new RF wide angle zoom lens promises to be even better, a professional high quality lens in a compact and lightweight package at an accessible price point.

This new Canon RF14-35mm f/4L IS USM lens is not just for professional photographers, it’s highly suitable for photography enthusiasts too. Adding to the wide and diverse range of different RF lenses for the Canon EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera system that are now available, they showcased Canon’s commitment and promise to the full-frame mirrorless camera eco-system.

Let me share with you more on my Canon EOS R5 review journey, photographs that I shot with the review camera, my thoughts and views on this new Canon full-frame mirrorless camera that is born to rule.

Aesthetics 

When you hold the Canon EOS R5 camera body, you would find it very familiar. The Canon EOS R5 body is similar to the Canon EOS R, it has a top LCD panel, slightly bigger in width with dual card slots and bigger battery. It has a magnesium alloy body: Strong, sturdy, durable and solid feel, not too heavy and easy to carry around. 

Canon photographers rejoice! Our favourite joy stick is back! Although it’s easy to use the LCD screen for moving and controlling the auto-focus (AF) point, the joy stick gives us photographers another option when using the camera especially when we are looking through the viewfinder to photograph our subjects. Fast and accurate AF point movement on both LCD screen and viewfinder, making our photography easier and faster.

Dual card slots are back, another feature that photographers would like to have it (the earlier EOS R and EOS RP have single card slots) back on the EOS R series cameras. With two card slots, 1 for SD and 1 for CFexpress, you can record them separately, this would be most welcomed by working professionals. The CFexpress would provide the incredible speed needed for your high fps RAW shots and for your 8K videography production. 

Powered by the LP-E6NH battery (you can still use the LP-E6 and LP-E6N batteries), providing more juice for your photography and videography. Just like the Canon EOS R, there is also a cover protecting the sensor when the EOS R5 is switched off. 

Technology 

Photography 

One of the key features that I like about the Canon EOS R5 is the auto-focus (AF) capabilities. It’s powered by the latest DIGIC X processor and 45MP CMOS sensor. AF speed is fast and accurate, up to 20 FPS. Animal detection AF is excellent in most cases. The Dual Pixel CMOS AF II combined with the fast processing speed of the latest DIGIC X processor brought about big improvements in the EOS R5 AF capability.

The AF is responsive and fast when changing from viewfinder to LCD screen. Using the joystick allows easy movement of AF point/zone to the subject when looking through the viewfinder. The ISO is from 100 to 51,200, my personal tolerance level is around ISO 25,600 that I find it usable.

Eye tracking is fast and accurate, improved from Canon EOS R, making portraiture photography fast and ease of use to get the subject’s eyes sharp and accurate. The Animal detection AF is welcomed by wildlife photographers, fast AF speed, accuracy and ease of usage. 

AF – People / Animals / No priority 

AF – Eye tracking / Spot AF / 1-point / Expand AF area / Expand AF area : around / Zone AF / Large Zone AF : Vertical / Large Zone AF : Horizontal

The Large Zone AF: Vertical and Large Zone AF: Horizontal are two interesting AF selections that can be chosen by the photographer. These two selections would be helpful in animal/wildlife photography.

Case 2 – Continue to track subjects, ignoring possible obstacles

Case 3 – Instantly focus on subjects suddenly entering AF points

Case 4 – For subjects that accelerate or decelerate quickly

Videography

In the modern world today, video has risen in prominence and significance with the rise of social media and internet usage. A modern digital camera is no longer just for photography, it now can produce excellent videos as well. 

On the Canon EOS R5, it’s easy to navigate and use the movie recording function. You can shoot in different modes, from 8K to FHD that would be sufficient for most leisure and serious amateur users. As for those into filmmaking, commercial videography, you have the options of shooting and showcasing in 8K format, or shoot in 8K and export to 4K format, or shoot in 4K. The video AF is fast, accurate and responsive, easy to use too.

Videography works with EOS R5

I didn’t get to spend more time doing videography works with the EOS R5 as I probably shoot more stills photography doing wildlife photography with the RF100-500mm lens. However, I did manage to shoot short video clips of 30s and 1min for my documentary coverage of Tanglin Halt and Clementi Forest, both areas that I have been documenting and photographing since 2011. 

I shot the videos in 8K format, while I have no qualms about the 8K video quality, it’s very demanding on computer hardware and resources. My videos are edited by fellow photographer Isaac Ong and I would upload them into YouTube and share here when the videos are ready. I would add on Isaac’s thoughts and views on the suggested computing hardware, technical specifications and resources required, should you be looking at doing 8K video production with the Canon EOS R5. 

5-axis In-Body Image Stabiliser 

There is the new 5-axis In-Body Image Stabiliser, coupled with Optical Image Stabiliser on the appropriate lens attached, this powerful function and features helps us photographers and videographers in our shoots that we sometimes don’t realise about the two features in action when using the Canon EOS R5.

From low light handheld photography to handheld videography work, the new 5-axis In-Body Image Stabiliser coupled with an appropriate Canon lens with Image Stabiliser are going to be a huge asset for the photographer and videographer using the Canon EOS R5.

Connectivity 

The Canon EOS R5 has both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity functions, allowing you to connect with your other smart devices such as your smartphone or tablet. Whether it’s for remote control shooting or file transfer, you can be assured of the seamless connectivity.

EOS R5 with RF lenses 

During my review of the Canon EOS R5, I took the opportunity to request for the Canon RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM lens for review as well, pairing this telephoto zoom lens with the EOS R5. I had a great and fun time with this camera and lens combination, Canon EOS R5 with RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM lens. 

This particular combination is very popular with Canon photographers who are into wildlife and sports photography, high megapixels paired with a versatile, quite portable and great quality telephoto zoom lens. For images shot at 500mm, and if you still require cropping, there are enough megapixels from the EOS R5 for the photographer to retain the quality and sharpness of the subject. 

It’s a breeze and ease to use the native RF lenses on the Canon EOS R5, and with more RF lenses coming into the market, Canon photographers now have a greater ease of mind on the RF lenses available, showcasing Canon’s commitment to the full-frame mirrorless camera market. 

TGH Photography x Canon EOS R5 Explorer Series Production

I brought the Canon EOS R5 for a revisit to Tanglin Halt estate, a HDB estate that I had covered, documented and photographed some years back. Soon, the old flats would no longer be around, I am glad to have capture it down into my memories, documentation, and archives with the Canon EOS R5 and my other Canon DSLR cameras that I shot some years back. 

Another location that I brought the Canon EOS R5 to photograph was the Clementi Forest and Old Jurong Railway line. I have been documenting and photographing this segment since 2011, I went back again when I was reviewing the Canon EOS R6 and back again for another round with the Canon EOS R5. 

Thoughts and views

One of the key factors that would attracts photographers to the Canon EOS R5 is the 45MP sensor.  It’s not just higher  and better quality, the sharpness and details of the images that you can produce and if you need more room for cropping, the 45MP is a breeze in the park. 

8K videography is an interesting topic, while the consumer world is not fully onboard using 4K, the commercial level is already preparing for 8K production. While some might view 8K as on overzealous feature based on current 4K usage rates, the Canon EOS R5 in my humble personal opinion is forward thinking. The EOS R5 is inclined towards the pool of commercial photographers, production houses, filmmakers and videographers. With both high quality stills photography and 8K videography capabilities, you have the best of both worlds. 

Some other quick pointers and short summaries

• Dual card slots: 1 for SD, 1 for CFexpress card. While the CFexpress would provide the incredible speed needed for your high fps RAW shots and for your 8K videography production, the costs to add those storage cards are going to increase your overall camera investment budget.
• New 5-axis In-Body Image Stabiliser x Optical Image Stabiliser: powerful function and features helps us photographers in our shoots.
• 45MP full-frame CMOS Sensor (new sensor) & Digic X processor, photographers would really appreciate the processing speed and output quality on your photos and videos.
• For photographers into wildlife photography – the EOS R5 has a much improved AF and Animal Detection AF (popular with wildlife photographers, EOS R5 with prime lens or RF100-500mm)
• The expanding EOS R family + RF lenses lineup is ushering in a new era of photography – Born to Rule

Although the Canon EOS R5 is an excellent camera that you may use for a longer period of time, you have to factor in the additional costs in the following areas to complement and support the Canon EOS R5, allowing it to unleash its full potential:

Additional hardware costs due to 

• Getting a new desktop computer setup that can handle 8K videos editing
• CFexpress storage cards are costly 
• Extra storage space on desktop computer, laptop, portable hdd or cloud storage 

Overheating issue

The topic on overheating on the Canon EOS R5 had been discussed quite a fair bit on the internet and social media. During my review of the EOS R5, I did encounter overheating when I was doing stills photography, I had to switch off, waited for it to cool down before I was able to resume. I made an adjustment, switching on Eco mode and slowing down the pace of my photography. Thereafter, I didn’t encounter any more overheating. 

Although I didn’t get to do as much videography with the Canon EOS R5 as I would like, I managed to shoot a few videos in 8K, keeping the clips to 30s and 1minute. During that time, I  encounter some heat dissipated, that is normal in recording videos. However, I didn’t encounter any major overheating issue. 

While the EOS R5 overheating issue has invited a number of discussions and debates, I feel that it’s a great camera overall. The full-frame mirrorless camera is a modern hybrid equipment for the modern photographer and videographer that is most welcomed by many creative professionals. Based on my understanding and research, the firmware update for the EOS R5 has improved the overheating issue. 

Understanding that the modern digital mirrorless camera is a hybrid camera, it’s not like a dedicated filmmaking/cinematic series camera if that’s what you are looking for. Cameras such as the EOS R5 gives us modern photographers (like me) to diversify and add videography/filmmaking into our services delivery. Knowing the engineering constraints of a hybrid camera, managing and adjusting how we shoot videos, might just be the small tips to manage the overheating issue (with the firmware updates applied as well).

Best of Both Worlds

In my personal humble opinion, The Canon EOS R5 at this current juncture in time, represents the best of both worlds together – Photography and Videography. From Reimagine Optical Excellence (EOS R), to Reimagine Your Potential (EOS RP) and now Born to Rule (EOS R5) and (EOS R6).

Although the upcoming Canon EOS R3 is going to open up more opportunities and diversity in Canon full-frame mirrorless line-up, the Canon EOS R5 might just suit your needs and requirements for your respective photography genres. 

A very powerful and fast mirrorless camera highly suitable and recommended for professionals, ideal for serious amateurs too. In a way, it’s similar to EOS 5D Mark IV, the Canon EOS R5 camera would be an easy transition for existing Canon photographers, the handling of the camera body and menu interface, it’s easy to use and get the hang of it. 

The Canon EOS R5 is recommended for

• Professional photographers moving over from DSLR setup to mirrorless setup upgrading from entry level DSLRs or entry level mirrorless cameras (choice of EOS R5, EOS R6 and EOS R to choose from and the upcoming EOS R3 as well)
• Professional photographers who need the higher megapixels and image quality 
• Portraiture, products, landscape
• Production houses 
• Filmmakers / Videographers  

Would this EOS R5 be my next camera upgrade/change? 

I am currently using Canon EOS-1DX Mark II and Canon EOS RP, there is a possibility that I might add either the EOS R5 or maybe the EOS R6 to my setup (or even maybe the upcoming EOS R3?). 

With the recent announcement on the development of the Canon EOS R3, how would this influence/change my plans for camera changes/upgrades? To be honest, I don’t have an answer yet (even though I secretly lust for the Canon EOS R3). The world of possibilities are out there for Canon photographers with choices to choose from EOS R5, EOS R6, EOS R, EOS RP and upcoming EOS R3.

However, I would still share my thoughts and views on the differences between Canon EOS R5 and R6 in my upcoming comparison article, for photographers who feel that the either the Canon EOS R5 or EOS R6 would suit their needs and usage. This mobile application (2) would definitely interest professional photographers who are able to transfer an image to FTP/FTPS/SFTP (3) server through a mobile device. For professional sports media or press on-site, this would be convenient for them. Transferring data through a fixed PC is the common method that many photographers are familiar with.

“Mobile File Transfer” supports the file transfer through a mobile device that has better portability, convenience and immediate, thus improving the efficiency of the post-shooting workflow.

High Speed Transmission of 5G

The Canon Mobile File Transfer application supports 5G (5th Generation Mobile Communication System) mobile devices and it enables professional photographers to upload large numbers of images to FTP/FTPS/SFTP servers at high speed. Apart from automatic and selective image transfer, filter transfer, which transfers images on pre-defined conditions, is also supported.

Function to Add Information for Efficient Data Transfer 

Metadata, such as the photographer’s name and image license information, can be added to images based on standards developed by IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council) that major news companies and agencies participate in. Also, voice memos can be added to images transferred from the camera to the mobile devices on the application. The IPTC* metadata can be edited as well.

The Canon EOS R3 that is currently in development, is based on the concept of high speed, high sensitivity and high reliability. The EOS R3 will be introduced into Canon’s lineup of professional and enthusiast cameras that includes the EOS-1D X Mark III flagship DSLR camera (released in February 2020) and the EOS 5 series, including the EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera (released in July 2020). The EOS R3 aims to provide professional-level quality for both stills and video capture, even for moving subjects.

The EOS R3 is the first EOS series camera to be equipped with Canon’s newly developed 35mm full-frame backlit stacked CMOS sensor that makes possible high-speed readout. The camera also features a DIGIC X image processor for high-speed image processing that realises high-speed continuous shooting of up to 30 frames-per-second (1) (FPS) with AF/AE tracking when using the electronic shutter. In addition, the camera significantly reduces image warping, a common challenge with electronic shutters, and is also capable of capturing moving subjects with reduced noise in such low-light environments as indoor areas or nighttime scenes. 

Alongside Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology—by which each pixel on the image sensor possesses both image capture and phase-detect AF functionality, thus enabling high-speed, high-accuracy and wide-range AF—the EOS R3 uses an algorithm that employs deep learning technology that enables improved head and eye detection for human subjects as well as a new capability to detect subject torsos. Thanks to this enhanced performance, the camera’s autofocus system provides high-performance subject tracking, even during portrait photography and in scenarios with frequent subject movement such as sports. Development is also underway to enable detection of additional subject types. 

In addition, the EOS R3 is Canon’s first digital camera to feature Eye Control AF (2) functionality. When shooting still images and looking through the viewfinder, this new feature enables the AF frame to adjust according to detected movement of the user’s eye, making possible smoother shooting with quick focus when transitioning between subjects. 

The EOS R3 answers the sophisticated needs of professionals by providing dust and water resistance developed with each iteration of the EOS-1 series, body design with integrated vertical hand-grip, reliability and ease of use, as well as compatibility with Canon’s Mobile File Transfer (3), announced alongside the EOS R3, which supports high-speed workflows. 

Personal thoughts and views

As a current EOS-1D X Mark II user myself and a big fan of the Canon EOS 1D series cameras, the EOS R3 development news is very exciting for me! While I am eagerly awaiting the official announcement and technical specifications of the EOS R3. I am making a guess here that EOS R3 would be officially announced in Q3 2021, based on my experiences and coverage on the previous three Canon cameras, EOS-1D X Mark III and EOS R5 and R6 cameras.

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III announced its development in October 2019, it was then subsequently officially announced in January 2020.

As for Canon EOS R5, their development was announced in February 2020, in July 2020, Canon officially announced Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6.

Would the EOS R3 mark the start of my migration to a full Canon RF system setup? I do not have an answer at this point in time. The EOS R system and RF lenses have improved tremendously and expanded their lenses lineup from the time Canon announced  their first full-frame mirrorless camera EOS R, followed by the EOS RP to EOS R5 and EOS R6 of today. More RF lenses are coming, making the Canon EOS R and RF lenses eco-system an even more holistic and complete camera and lenses eco-system for both professionals and enthusiasts alike.

Since the EOS R3 is currently in development, the technical specifications are kept under wraps until it is officially announced. Just for the fun of it, I am making a guess on some of EOS R3 specifications:

EOS R3: 40MP, 8K video

With reference to selected Canon cameras, EOS-1D X Mark III: 20.1MP, 4K video | EOS R5: 45MP, 8K video | EOS R6: 20.1MP, 4K video | EOS 5D Mark IV: 30.1MP, 4K video

Stay tuned as we await the official announcement of the upcoming Canon EOS R3 full-frame mirrorless camera that is going to be a high speed, high sensitivity and high reliability camera.

Simple, Fun and Easy to Use

Zooming, shooting and recording on the PowerShot ZOOM is straightforward and fast, letting users quickly capture fleeting moments such as children scoring a point at the basketball court and birds resting on branches at nature parks. Pressing the zoom button located at the top of the device lets users zoom into three modes (100m, 400m and 800m magnification) instantly. To take a photo or record a video, users can simply press the photo or record button at the bottom of the device. 

The PowerShot ZOOM also sports a telescopic design and comes with autofocus and image stabilisation, which provides a comfortable viewing experience during prolonged use. The features also let users easily capture clearer shots of players running across the football field or a flock of birds flying across the treetops. 

Designed to be used on the go, the PowerShot ZOOM can be charged via the supplied Type-C to Type-C interface cable with a compatible charger or power bank (sold separately). A full battery charge provides approximately 60 minutes of movie record time, 150 still shots and a live viewing time of 70 minutes. The PowerShot ZOOM uses a microSD card as storage media. 

Seamless Connectivity with Smartphones for Sharing on the Go

For easy sharing on various social media platforms, images recorded on the PowerShot ZOOM can be transferred to a smartphone via Canon’s Camera Connect app wirelessly or via wired USB. With the Camera Connect app, users can perform remote shooting and share the images being viewed in real time, on a smartphone with family and friends.

When the PowerShot ZOOM is connected to a smartphone via a wired USB cable, it is recognized as a USB mass storage device, and images can be imported into the smartphone. 

Thoughts and Views

I had a short hands on with the PowerShot ZOOM when I went on a photo walk with Ryan Cheng, a fellow photographer who had the Canon PowerShot ZOOM for a review. His photos that he shot from this digital monocular camera is published inside my article.

I had the opportunity to try out the PowerShot ZOOM . It’s simple to use, it’s also really handy and useful especially for wildlife photographers. This PowerShot ZOOM is a mix of a monocular camera and scope/binoculars. Not only can you take photos, you would be able to “mark out” the location before you switch to your   camera and lens setup to photograph the wildlife.

I reckon this would be an excellent complement to a setup such as Canon EOS R5 or Canon EOS R6 with RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens, the new favourite Canon mirrorless lens and telephoto zoom lens combination for wildlife photography.

In my short hands on experience article that I published in July 2020, I confessed that I wasn’t really into lenses with focal length range of 100-500mm as my setup was geared towards the holy trinity setup and big prime lenses. During the period when I was reviewing the Canon RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens, I was enlightened, my perceptions and views of this focal length range changed.  

A favourite lens for wildlife photographers 

I have been reading and looking at Facebook groups/pages posts on wildlife photographs shot in Singapore. There is a trend on these combinations of Canon EOS R5 or EOS R6 with RF100-500mm lens. I had chats with the folks from my local camera shop that I regularly go to, this is quite a popular camera and lens combination that the photographers wanted to get.

When I had the RF100-500mm lens with the Canon EOS R5 for review, I finally understood and realise why this is such a popular combination and setup. From my adventures at Jurong Bird Park, to West Coast Park, Bukit Batok Nature Park, Pasir Ris Park and Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. I photographed quite a lot of wildlife photographs.

The 100mm to 500mm range is versatile for wildlife photography, you would not be constrained by shorter focal lengths or a fixed focal length lens. The photographs quality are sharp even when shooting at its maximum aperture. 

This would not be the fastest lens since it’s not a constant aperture lens, nevertheless the AF is pretty impressive and fast when paired with the EOS R5 body (and I believe it would be just as good with the EOS R6 body too).

More than just a lens for wildlife and sports photography 

Although this lens is probably going to be more geared towards wildlife and sports photography, it’s a versatile lens that photographers can use for sports, travel and landscapes too. While I didn’t get the opportunity to photograph sports events with this lens, I was able to photograph people/machines in action from a distance away and landscapes too. 

Photographing landscapes with this 100mm to 500mm focal length range telephoto lens is probably less common, even less common in Singapore when it’s a small country by land size and honestly speaking, it doesn’t have much of a wide and vast landscapes in big countries that I visited. Using the RF100-500mm to shoot landscapes in Singapore, I managed to capture some beautiful moments that I really like and didn’t expect to come out in a way that I would expect from my travel photography trips overseas. 

Personal thoughts and views

This is a lens that change my view on long focal length range telephoto zoom lens. While I am a user and supporter of zoom lenses such as 24-70mm and 70-200mm focal range, a longer range focal length such as 70-300mm or 100-400mm didn’t attract me as much initially in my photography adventures. I was more inclined towards prime telephoto lens such as the 300mm f/2.8L for their speed and optics. During the period when I was reviewing the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens, it changed my view and approach towards wildlife, sports and action photography. I am now more inclined towards focal length range telephoto zoom lens, keen to get this lens some time down the road.

Key factors and points that convinced and changed me after using RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens

• Lighter in weight
• More versatile than a fixed focal length prime lens 
• Easier to carry and move around with faster reaction time when photographing wildlife/sports versus a fixed prime lens on a tripod 
• The optics quality and AF speed is excellent considering that it’s not a fixed focal length prime lens
• Price is a lot lower as compared to a fixed focal length prime lens 

A versatile, portable and not too heavy telephoto zoom lens with excellent optics quality that is comparable to a prime lens. Since it’s not a constant aperture lens, the auto-focus speed may not be as fast as a prime lens. However, when paired with the Canon EOS R5 or R6, the AF speed is still pretty fast and impressive. 

This remarkable lens is very Ideal for wildlife, sports and travel, sometimes landscapes too. In the wildlife and birding community, a number of photographers have the Canon EOS R5 or Canon EOS R6 and RF100-500mm setup, a powerful, ideal, excellent and popular combination of both AF speed, AF accuracy, optics and output quality (45MP Canon EOS R5 sensor provides lot of details even when cropping in). 

The retail recommended price for the Canon RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens is SGD$4,459, compared to a cost of a big aperture prime lens, it’s not that expensive.

The Canon RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens is a versatile, portable and not too heavy telephoto zoom lens, very ideal and suitable for wildlife photographers, sports and travel. This highly capable long range telephoto zoom lens gives photographers options to choose from for their wildlife or sports photography. A value for money top quality Canon L lens that gives photographers, versatility and portability versus the more expensive prime telephoto lens. Whether it is a telephoto zoom lens or telephoto prime lens, photographers have the options available to choose from.

The opportunity came for me to do a review with the Canon EOS R6, let me share with you my insights, views, thoughts, photographs and videos shot with the Canon EOS R6 full-frame mirrorless camera.

Aesthetics 

The Canon EOS R6 camera body is very similar to the Canon EOS RP, there is no top LCD panel, it’s also slightly bigger in width with dual card slots and bigger battery. It has a magnesium alloy body: Strong, sturdy, durable and solid feel, you would feel that it’s not too heavy and it would be easy to carry around. 

The EOS R6 LCD touch screen is easy to use, it has an intuitive navigation menu that allows users to quickly navigate and change their settings. 

Canon photographers rejoice! Our favourite joy stick is back! Although it’s easy to use the LCD screen for moving and controlling the auto-focus (AF) point, the joy stick gives us photographers another option when using the camera especially when we are looking through the viewfinder to photograph our subjects. Fast and accurate AF point movement on both LCD screen and viewfinder, making our photography easier and faster.

Dual card slots are back, another feature that photographers would like to have it (the earlier EOS R and EOS RP have single card slots) back on the EOS R series cameras. With two SD card slots, you can record them separately, this would be most welcomed by working professionals. 

Powered by the LP-E6NH battery (you can still use the LP-E6 and LP-E6N batteries), providing more juice for your photography and videography. Just like the Canon EOS R, there is also a cover protecting the sensor when the EOS R6 is switched off. 

Technology 

Photography 

One of the key features that I like about the Canon EOS R6 is the auto-focus (AF) capabilities. It’s powered by new DIGIC X and CMOS sensor inherited from Canon flagship professional DSLR EOS-1DX Mark III. AF speed is fast and accurate, up to 20 FPS. Animal detection AF is excellent in most cases. The Dual Pixel CMOS AF II combined with the fast processing speed of the DIGIC X processor brought about big improvements in the EOS R6 AF capability. 

The AF is responsive and fast when changing from viewfinder to LCD screen. Using the joystick allows easy movement of AF point/zone to the subject when looking through the viewfinder. The ISO is from 100 to 102,400, my personal tolerance level is around ISO 51,200 that I find it usable.

Eye tracking is fast and accurate, improved from Canon EOS R, making portraiture photography fast and ease of use to get the subject’s eyes sharp and accurate. The Animal detection AF is welcomed by wildlife photographers, the speed, accuracy and ease of usage. 

AF – People / Animals / No priority 

AF – Eye tracking / Spot AF / 1-point / Expand AF area / Expand AF area : around / Zone AF / Large Zone AF : Vertical / Large Zone AF : Horizontal

The Large Zone AF: Vertical and Large Zone AF: Horizontal are two interesting AF selections that can be chosen by the photographer. These two selections would be helpful in animal/wildlife photography.

Servo AF 

Case 1 – Versatile multi purpose setting

Case 2 – Continue to track subjects, ignoring possible obstacles

Case 3 – Instantly focus on subjects suddenly entering AF points

Case 4 – For subjects that accelerate or decelerate quickly

Videography

In the modern world today, video has risen in prominence and significance with the rise of social media and internet usage. A modern digital camera is no longer just for photography, it now can produce excellent videos as well. 

On the Canon EOS R6, it’s easy to navigate and use the movie recording function. You can shoot in different modes, from 4K to FHD that would be sufficient for most leisure and serious amateur users, and 4K might be enough for those shooting commercial videos/short films too. The video AF is fast, accurate and responsive, easy to use too.

Video works shot with Canon EOS R6 

Although I spent more time on photography with the Canon EOS R6, I did spent some time shooting videos with the new camera. Here are two videos that were shot by me, editing was handled by Isaac Ong, a fellow photographer. Isaac has been an enormous help to me, in the videography/filmmaking department, taking some workload off me.

BBQ with Chef Keith

Chef Keith is a personal friend of mine, I had shot a number of times on his cooking, plating and . However, this is the first time that I am doing a video of his BBQ cooking and I was happy to capture it down inside this short video with the Canon EOS R6.

5-axis In-Body Image Stabiliser 

There is the new 5-axis In-Body Image Stabiliser, coupled with Optical Image Stabiliser on the appropriate lens attached, this powerful function and features helps us photographers and videographers in our shoots that we sometimes don’t realise about the two features in action when using the Canon EOS R6.

From low light handheld photography to handheld videography work, the new 5-axis In-Body Image Stabiliser coupled with an appropriate Canon lens with Image Stabiliser are going to be a huge asset for the photographer and videographer using the Canon EOS R6. 

Connectivity 

The Canon EOS R6 has both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity functions, allowing you to connect with your other smart devices such as your smartphone or tablet. Whether it’s for remote control shooting or file transfer, you can be assured of the seamless connectivity. 

EOS R6 with RF lenses 

During the time I had with the Canon EOS R6 camera for review, I had the opportunity to test out and review two RF lenses as well. They were the RF24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM and RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lenses.

The new generation of RF lenses are excellent with its optics, AF speed and the seamless integration with the EOS R camera series. There is also the RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM lens, with these three lenses, they are the new age holy trinity lenses that would be welcomed by most working/commercial photographers, as well as for the serious amateurs too.

From Reimagine Optical Excellence (EOS R), to Reimagine Your Potential (EOS RP) and now Born to Rule (EOS R6 and EOS R5), the world of Canon EOS R cameras are getting more exciting with a full-frame mirrorless camera suitable for each and everyone of you, from the professionals to amateur/leisure photographers.

In my personal humble opinion, I would recommend Canon EOS R6 full-frame mirrorless camera for the following segments: 

• Photographers (especially professionals and serious amateurs) who are moving over from DSLR setup to mirrorless setup
• Upgrading from entry level DSLRs or entry level mirrorless cameras 
• Serious amateurs who love to explore and expand their photography further and wider
• Users whose emphasis is on photography first, videography second

Would this Canon EOS R6 be my next camera upgrade/change? Or would I go for the Canon EOS R5?

Although my current Canon cameras setup are the Canon EOS-1DX Mark II and EOS RP, there is a possibility that I might add either the EOS R6 or EOS R5 to my setup down the road, or I might wait out for future Canon EOS R series announcements before making a decision on my next upgrade/change.  

As a current Canon EOS-1DX Mark II and Canon EOS RP user, the Canon EOS R6 is a very familiar camera to me, not just in the aesthetics and layout similar to the Canon EOS RP, that’s also the inherited capabilities and technical features from the Canon EOS-1DX series.
