Short hands on experience with Canon EOS R3

At the media session, not only did I get a short hands on experience to touch and feel the Canon EOS R3, I had an interactive session with the folks from Canon Singapore. I am going to share some of my personal thoughts and views that I compiled from my short hands on session as well as my own Q&A session with Canon Singapore.

During the media session, I noticed in the presentation that the EOS R3 is positioned below the EOS-1D X series and above the EOS R5 and EOS R6. Personally, I feel that the EOS R3 technical specifications and capabilities are comparable to the EOS-1D X series (and maybe even better!). Equipped with a newly developed back-illuminated stacked CMOS 24.1 megapixels sensor, this could be just right and enough for those into sports, action and press photography. 

The Canon EOS R3 is lighter in weight and slightly smaller in size as compared to EOS-1D X Mark III, it has a very familiar feel and touch if you are an existing EOS-1D X user.

It’s a technologically advanced mirrorless camera with deep learning technology applied to Eye Detection AF on the EOS R3. Eye Control Detection AF is a very useful technology and capability, photographers into sports, action, wedding and journalism would love this feature. 

Examples of Eye Detection AF in action: 

Sports photography: Penalty kick in a football match, using Eye Detection AF technology to focus on the penalty taker, switching seamlessly to the goalkeeper and vice versa. 

Wedding photography: Using Eye Detection AF to switch focus from the wedding couple to the guests nearby, allowing the photographer to capture priceless moments from their position.

The Canon EOS R3 has a maximum shutter speed at 1/64,000 (with electronic shutter) and continuous shooting at 30 fps. These two key features will definitely light up the eyes of sports, action and wildlife photographers. Can you visualise shooting wildlife, sports or action photography at 30 fps with a shutter speed of 1/64,000 using EOS R3 fast focusing AF capabilities? 

Vehicle priority AF is a newly added feature that will excite motorsports photographers, allowing them to detect automobiles and motorcycles with great precision. There is a feature that caught my attention when I read other photography websites especially those from United States of America that had early access to the Canon EOS R3 prior to the coordinated official launch. The Flexible Zone AF allows photographers to change the size of the AF area, this would come in useful for sports, action and wildlife photography. 

The EOS R3 can record up to 6K 60p RAW or 4K 120p 10-bit movie. Some might question why 6K and not 8K? For a start, the EOS R3 target markets are photographers in the sports, action, wildlife and press photography sectors, where still photography with fast and accurate AF are the key features that professional photographers wanted/required. Should the need to shoot video is needed, 4K standards can get the job done and deliver the goods without taking up too much resources on the desktop or laptop, while 6K is a bonus/sweet spot for slightly higher standards than 4K while not over pushing your desktop or laptop resources when editing 8K videos.

Expectations and potentially the super flagship EOS R1 full frame camera in the near future 

The positioning of Canon EOS R3 below the EOS-1D X series was a bit of a surprise to me personally. The technical specifications and capabilities of their latest full-frame mirrorless camera is on par with the EOS-1D X Mark III (even better in my personal humble opinion). I was curious to know more about Canon’s positioning of the Canon EOS R3. 

Based on my understanding as a Canon photographer myself (EOS 300D -> EOS 30D -> EOS-1D III -> EOS 70D -> EOS-1D X -> EOS-1D X Mark II & EOS RP) as well as covering Canon news over the years (probably a decade by now?), naming this technologically advanced and powerful as the EOS R3 is going to set some pretty high expectations for the upcoming super flagship (rumoured and widely speculated) EOS R1 full-frame mirrorless camera in the near future. 

The slogan for Canon’s full-frame mirrorless cameras is “Born to Rule”. When Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 were announced in 2020, Canon showcased to the photography world, their commitment to full-frame mirrorless camera and lenses system, how far and how much they had invested and developed the full-frame mirrorless EOS R camera and RF lenses system. 

I had reviewed both Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 full-frame mirrorless cameras, they were very impressive, very capable and packed with strong features, it was tempting for me to fully switch over to full-frame mirrorless. While I only had a short hands-on session with the Canon EOS R3, I am already very impressed and excited. Now, the call to fully switch over to full-frame mirrorless is getting even stronger. 

What does the EOS R3 bode for the future of Canon full-frame mirrorless cameras? This camera has now set a very high standard and expectations for future Canon full-frame mirrorless cameras. There are a number of speculations and rumours (as usual) going on around the photography sector. My personal speculation is a super flagship (rumoured and widely speculated) EOS R1 full-frame mirrorless camera. 

Canon DSLR users, especially sports photographers, this technologically advanced and powerful packed technical specifications EOS R3 sets the bar and standards for professional, sports, action, wildlife and press photography. 

Last but not least – to EOS R3 or not?

I have a soft spot for the Canon EOS-1D series, they took (and help define) my Canon photography to the next few levels when I started my EOS-1D series with EOS-1D Mark III in 2010. From EOS-1D Mark III to EOS-1D X, followed by EOS-1D X Mark II. While the EOS R3 is not named the EOS-1 series equivalent at this stage, the shape, feel, familiarity and capabilities of the EOS R3 are just like the EOS-1D X family.  

Even with a short hands on experience session with the EOS R3 and not having done a full review, I am already very impressed and excited with this amazing and technologically advanced full-frame mirrorless camera for sports, action, wildlife and press photography. 

For fellow Canon EOS-1D family (especially EOS-1D X Mark II and III) DSLR users, in my personal humble opinion as of now without having done a full review of the Canon EOS R3, you can now have the full confidence to migrate over from DSLR (EOS-1D X Mark III).

Last but not least – to EOS R3 or not? Is it time for me to fully move over from Canon DSLR (EOS-1D X Mark II) to Canon full-frame mirrorless (Canon EOS R3)? Born to Rule – Canon EOS R3.

What are the new features of Canon EOS R5? What makes Canon EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera that highly anticipated by the world photography community? From my coverage, following, testing, reviewing (and owning the Canon EOS RP) over the years from the first Canon mirrorless Canon EOS M to Canon EOS RP, I am able to continue with a part two of this article that I wrote and published “The Canon Mirrorless Journey from Canon EOS M to EOS R” when Canon EOS R5 is officially announced. The improvements starting from Canon EOS R5 are significant and important, the information that I gathered from Canon EXPO 2016 Shanghai, shows the commitment (to mirrorless system), imaging and technological improvements that you can have inside the upcoming Canon EOS R5.

Let me share with you, the new features of the Canon EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera

Canon revealed new features and functions of the highly anticipated Canon EOS R5, engineered with the revolutionary RF mount and fitted with Canon’s latest technologies. The EOS R5 is the first of the next-generation full-frame mirrorless cameras in Canon’s EOS R System.

Video

The Canon EOS R5 comes with groundbreaking specifications in the video department. The compact body houses the ability to shoot 8K videos internally at up to 30fps with full sensor width read out (without crop). This allows flexibility in post-processing or editing as you have access to four times the resolution of 4K—being able to crop in or pan within the frame and still deliver in 4K or FHD output. The camera also has the impressive ability of shooting 4K at up to 120fps, both internally and externally. For recordings in both 8K and 4K, 10-bit YCbCr 4:2:2 internal recording with Canon Log is supported.

With the RAW movie feature first made available on the EOS-1DX Mark III in late 2019, the EOS R5 raises the bar further to include internal 8K RAW movie recording at up to 30fps with full sensor width read out. Moreover, the Dual Pixel CMOS AF will be available in every video resolution available in the EOS R5—including the RAW movie mode.

Improved AF

The EOS R5 also comes with an improved AF algorithm, capable of detecting the body, face and eyes of animal subjects such as dogs, cats and even birds. The Animal Detection AF in the EOS R5 is capable of detecting erratic movements, enabling users to shoot a variety of fast-moving subjects with greater ease.

5-Axis IBIS

The EOS R5 will also feature a 5-axis in-body image stabilisation system (IBIS) which works in tandem with the Image Stabilization in Canon lenses to effectively reduce camera-shake blur. Users can now master challenging handheld shots when using telephoto lenses or shooting in dimly-lit conditions.

Dual card slots 

All these impressive functions are packed into a compact body, which is designed with two card slots – CFexpress card and SD memory card. The ultra-high transfer speeds of the CFexpress card is one of the key reasons for the camera’s ability to perform continuous shooting at up to 20fps and internal recordings of 8K RAW movies.

Personal thoughts and views

The Canon EOS R5 would be making her official debut soon, I reckon photographers would be getting more excited with the Canon EOS R5, how would this camera fits into their lineup, some might be ready to get the Canon EOS R5, the Canon full-frame mirrorless camera that can cover both stills and videos in both personal and professional capacity.

With the development of more RF lenses on Canon’s imaging solutions roadmap, the Canon EOS R and RF lenses system are now very close to a full-fledged full-frame mirrorless photography ecosystem, moreover photographers can also tap on the EF lenses system and other Canon accessories too.

The Canon EOS R5 is packed with very good technical specifications and capabilities, for both stills and video. How would this fit into my Canon photography setup? This is a developing story, it’s exciting and opening up more options for my Canon photography.

The Canon EOS R is Canon’s first full frame mirrorless camera that was announced in September 2018, I had the opportunity to review the Canon EOS R and I currently have the Canon EOS RP as part of my photography setup. I had been following the Canon mirrorless journey from Canon EOS M to EOS R, looking forward to more announcements and developments from the Canon EOS R and RF lenses family!

This is a limited edition Uniqlo T-Shirt, a collaboration between Canon and Uniqlo, under “The Brands-Masterpiece” collection that features famous products and logos that are popular and loved by many worldwide. This design showcases the Canon EOS R, the first full frame mirrorless camera by Canon.

Canon seeks to Reimagine Optical Excellence, through the expansion of the EOS System with full frame EOS R mirrorless camera and a new range of lenses. This is Canon’s third collaboration with Uniqlo, with the first two in 2010 and 2011, featuring Canon’s EOS system. For photographers who specialise in the portraiture photography genre, the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS lens would definitely be of interest to you! The 85mm focal length is one of the popular focal length choices used by portraiture photographers. Having tried out the EF85mm f/1.2L and EF85mm f/1.4L lenses, and having reviewed the EF85mm f/1.4L previously, I personally prefer using the f/1.4 focal length.

I would be keen to test and review the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS lens, some time down the road when the opportunity arises. Using my previous knowledge and experience using the EF85mm f/1.2L and f/1.4L lenses, the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS lens would be able to continue on Canon’s 85mm L lenses legacy.

With the announcement of the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS lens, I now have an option to choose from both EF and RF lenses, the 85mm portraiture lens that I have been considering to add on to my setup. How I would want to build my Canon EOS RP and RF lenses setup, it’s still a work in progress (and a lot to strategise and plan) since I have my existing Canon EOS-1DX Mark II DSLR inside my setup.

For those who have just started/concentrating on the Canon EOS R and RF lenses system, you have less headache and can start to welcome the new RF lenses being announced and arriving into the market. The new RF L lenses announcements showed Canon’s commitment to the Canon EOS R and RF lenses lineup, I am looking forward to more lenses on their RF lenses roadmap!

Let me share with you more information and details on the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS lens:

“We are proud to introduce the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS, a powerful lens that achieves the highest optical performance among Canon’s interchangeable lenses with 85mm focal length,” said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore. “Equipped with Canon’s  original DS coating and f/1.2 maximum aperture, the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS makes significant and smooth ‘bokeh expression’ possible to achieve.”

Unique DS Coating for Smooth Bokeh

With Canon’s proprietary vapour-deposited coating technology, the DS coating has the effect of gradually decreasing the transmittance of light from the centre to the periphery of the lens. This produces a smooth gradient bokeh that provides that beautiful expression as soft blurring can be achieved all around the outline of the bokeh. To optimise the effect, DS coating is used on the front and rear surface of the lens, allowing users to achieve high optical performance when shooting. The optical performance of the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS, together with the previously released RF85mm f/1.2L USM lens, even surpasses that of the renowned EF85mm f/1.2L USM lens.

With the large aperture of f/1.2, the soft and smooth gradient bokeh effect of the DS coating is maximised. The unique DS feature of the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS adds a special touch to images in various settings, ranging from weddings and portraits, fashion or lifestyle scenarios.

A Large Aperture Lens with Superior Resolution

When it comes to large aperture lenses, the 85mm focal length has been the ideal choice for portrait photographers, allowing them to create natural-looking portraits with beautiful bokeh in the background. The RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS has an optical design of 13 elements in 9 groups, including Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics (BR) optical element, 1 UD and 1 ground aspherical lens element. The BR and UD lenses help to greatly suppress chromatic aberration, resulting in excellent rendering performance.

The lens also features Canon’s proprietary Air Sphere Coating (ASC) to reduce lens flare and ghosting caused by reflections, as well as enhance image clarity and contrast when shooting back-lit subjects.

Thanks to its bright aperture of f/1.2 and 9-blade circular aperture, the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS delivers beautiful and soft background blur. The large aperture also allows users to capture sharp and crisp images in low light environments with a higher shutter speed.

The lens achieves a minimum focusing distance of 0.85m and 0.12x maximum magnification, expanding the shooting area from close-ups of people to shooting small objects.

A Brand New Shooting Experience

The RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS also features a new “control ring” found in new RF lens series, allowing users to assign settings that include aperture value, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity and exposure compensation. The tactile control ring gives the user precise control allowing accurate adjustment without looking away from the subject.

When the control ring is operated alongside the main dial and quick control dial on the EOS R camera, user will have three dials to set the aperture, shutter speed and ISO sensitivity respectively, simplifying the complex operations that initially required several steps to achieve.

For flexible adaption to changes in the environment, users can assign exposure compensation to the control ring during portrait shooting. In the case when there is a sudden change in lighting conditions, the user can use one hand to operate the control ring and adjust exposure compensation while simultaneously using the shutter button with the other hand.

Being an L-lens for professionals, the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS’s weatherproof construction also makes it dust and water-resistant, making it the perfect choice of lens for photographers who enjoy outdoor photography.

Canon has announced that a new firmware update for the EOS R and EOS RP is now available for download. As part of the effort to continuously improve on the user’s experience every step of the way, the new firmware update improves on both cameras’ auto-focus capabilities and ensures that users never miss out on a shot.

This new firmware version offers the following key areas of improvement, enhanced for a seamless experience with the EOS R (v1.4.0) & EOS RP (v1.3.0):

1. Enhances eye detection Auto Focus (AF) for improved face and eye recognition at greater distances.
2. Improved Auto Focus (AF) performance helps the camera to focus on smaller subjects.
3. Reduced lag time between the actual Auto Focus (AF) and the AF frame display for images in the viewfinder or on the LCD.

With this firmware update, Canon delivers on its promise of “Delighting You Always”, ensuring that users have more control over their craft and are empowered to capture the shots they want.

Canon announced RF15-35mm f/2.8 L IS USM and RF24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM lenses, these two focal range lenses are part of the holy trinity lenses that we photographers know and relate to. With the addition of these two RF L lenses, this announcement displays and reinforces Canon’s commitment to the RF lenses lineup and the EOS R full frame mirrorless cameras. The holy trinity lenses combination, 15-35mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm focal length range, are very versatile and capable for many photography genres. These two lenses are highly anticipated and eagerly awaited by photographers using the Canon EOS R system.

Personally for me, this would also be a time for serious planning and consideration. With my current Canon EOS RP camera, I have the RF24-105mm f/4 L IS USM lens and I can also use my EF lenses (EF17-40mm f/4 L USM, EF24-70mm f/4 L IS USM and EF70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM) for my Canon EOS 1DX Mark II. Investing in excellent quality lenses like the Canon L series, last you for a good decade at least (My EF17-40mm lens was probably bought in 2006 and I am still faithfully using it). Moving forward, I am planning to refresh some of my Canon L lenses, which lenses am I looking at and planning, is currently classified.

Let me share more information and details on Canon’s two new RF zoom trinity L lenses:

“The new RF24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM and RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM lenses, part of the Zoom Trinity, are much-anticipated zoom lenses added to complement the EOS RF lenses line-up and deliver on Canon’s commitment to building up the lens ecosystem for users of the EOS R and RP,” said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore. “As Canon’s first f/2.8 wide zoom lenses to be equipped with image stabilisation, coupled with features such as Nano USM for high-speed AF, these two lenses aim to deliver spectacular image quality that can adapt to the needs of photographers today.”

Both lenses cater to a wide variety of photography applications – the RF24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM’s versatile focal length range of 24-70mm makes it suitable for everyday use while the ultra-wide zoom range of the RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM makes it handy for landscapes and events such as weddings. Whether one is an advanced amateur or a seasoned professional photographer, they can rely on the high performance by Canon’s premium L-series lenses.

Edge-To-Edge Sharpness Throughout Zoom Range

The large diameter mount and the short back focus, which are common features of the RF mount, allows a large aperture lens to be placed near the imaging surface. This allows the advantage of achieving high image quality with gentle refraction of light rays and low aberrations, while retaining a more compact form. Users can expect lens aberrations to be significantly reduced with the arrangement of three glass-moulded aspherical lenses and three UD lenses on RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM and two UD lenses on RF24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM. The ASC coating on both lenses also helps to suppress flaring and ghosting, which could compromise image quality.

Unique to both RF lenses is the customisable control ring for exposure adjustment; ISO, shutter speed, aperture or exposure compensation. The tactile control ring allows a more precise control. The tiny yet powerful Nano USM focus drive system allows smooth, fast and quiet focusing. This is especially useful for wedding photographers shooting intimate moments such as vow exchanges or prayers in a place of worship.

Astounding Image Precision with IS

Both the RF24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM and RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM are equipped with the CIPA standard 5-stop IS, which gives users the ability to capture hand-held night scenes and dark indoor shots with minimal blurring. With the Dual Sensing IS feature for still images, the amount of shaking is detected from the camera’s CMOS sensor image information, in addition to the lens’ gyro sensor. By comparing and analysing these information, it is possible to detect and correct low-frequency shaking (slow shaking of the body due to breathing, etc.) that could not be detected on the lens side with high precision.

When recording movies or videos, Combination IS (the in-lens optical IS combined with the in-camera 5-axis electronic IS) enhances the effects of image stabilisation even further. The amount of shake that cannot be fully compensated for using lens IS alone is compensated further with in-camera electronic image stabilization.

Create Beautiful Bokeh with Bright Aperture of f/2.8

The RF24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM and RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM belong to Canon’s premium L-series range, denoted by the red line on the front barrel of the lenses. Both lenses feature water and dust resistant construction, so they can still perform in the event of sudden rainfall during outdoor shoots. The fluorine coating on the front and rear elements of both lenses helps to easily repel oil and water stains – which can be easily cleaned off with a dry cloth.

With the versatile day-to-day focal length range, the RF24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM can be used for various applications ranging from night scenes to portraits. The large and bright aperture enable users to shoot with less subject blurring at faster shutter speeds even in low light conditions, such as when photographing at night or indoors. For portrait photography, the f/2.8 aperture can create a beautiful bokeh effect, enhanced by the 9-blade circular diaphragm.

With the RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM, users can create images that utilise the ultrawide perspective of the lens and the blurring of the large f/2.8 aperture, expressing unique views of close up subjects. The extra one mm at the wide-angle end of the RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM (compared to the conventional 16mm) makes for dynamic photo expression with more emphasis on perspective and is especially useful for architecture and interior shots.

Why did I choose the Canon EOS RP?

Inside my Canon EOS RP review article that I recently published, I wrote about why did I choose the Canon EOS RP. Investing in the Canon EOS RP had been in the works for a period of time as I was searching for that mirrorless camera that suits my needs and requirements, the search took a bit of time.

In my personal humble opinion, this Canon EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera is probably the full-frame mirrorless camera that has the potential to change the full-frame mirrorless market even further, a low cost, value for money and capable full-frame mirrorless camera that would attract photographers to upgrade from their compact cameras or professionals to own it as a backup and fun camera to have.

DSLR versus Mirrorless

This is probably a never ending debate in the photography world, DSLR versus Mirrorless, there are so many debates out there, too much noise at times. Both DSLR and mirrorless cameras are good and solid in their own rights, DSLR system has been a proven camera system over time while mirrorless system has improved significantly over the years. Would DSLR camera system continue to decline, mirrorless system continues to rise and takes over the photography world? Maybe yes, maybe no.

I would not be emphasising too much into this debate for my article, let’s concentrate on the fun, craft and beauty of photography, capturing the moments, telling the stories with the best of both worlds with DSLR and mirrorless cameras together, with the Canon EOS 1DX Mark II and Canon EOS RP as my current/personal best of both worlds setup.

Final thoughts and views on Canon EOS R versus Canon EOS RP

Canon EOS R versus Canon EOS RP, which camera suits you better? This really depends on your budget, needs and requirements. The Canon EOS R system and family is only going to get bigger, with more RF lenses being lined up and patiently waiting for more Canon EOS R camera bodies to be announced (looking forward to the 1D series equivalent EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera).

With short hands on knowledge of both Canon EOS R and Canon EOS RP, my family and myself decided to purchase the Canon EOS RP pre-launch promotion package. Moreover, I have a (pretty good) knowledge and understanding of Canon’s mirrorless camera journey from their Canon EOS M (my parents bought it, replaced by the Canon EOS RP) to the launch of the Canon EOS R, I published an article in Decemeber 2018 titled “The Canon Mirrorless Journey from Canon EOS M to EOS R”.

Therefore, there was a short period of time whereby I had both Canon EOS R and Canon EOS RP full frame mirrorless cameras with me, I was able to create content with both Canon full frame mirrorless cameras while reviewing the Canon EOS R first before proceeding to use/review the Canon EOS RP. Upon returning the Canon EOS R, I was using the Canon EOS R a lot more, thus the delay in publishing my Canon EOS R review article.

Although the Canon EOS R has been in the market for at least half a year, there had already been a number of review articles and videos published around the world. I would still contribute and publish my Canon EOS R review article, followed by the Canon EOS RP article and a third article on the comparisons between Canon EOS R and Canon EOS RP, more in-depth thoughts and analysis, finally why I chose the Canon EOS RP over the Canon EOS R.

• LCD Panel , interesting , takes a bit of getting used to it , customising to your requirements
• Buttons customisable to suit your working style and requirements
• Mode dial different from other canon camera models
• No joy stick, AF point on the screen can be moved with your thumb
• Nice feel and grip, ergonomically designed, balanced weight

Thoughts and views

First and foremost, the Canon EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera showed Canon’s commitment to the mirrorless camera market, a point that I noted during the time when I attended Canon EXPO 2016 Shanghai and I published this article “The Next Wave and Trends (from Canon EXPO 2016 Shanghai)”

The time has finally come, for For photographers (professionals or serious enthusiasts) planning to change from DSLR to mirrorless and requires at least a semi-pro level model. At this point in time, there is also an additional Canon full-frame mirrorless camera to choose from, the EOS RP.

The Canon EOS R mirrorless full-frame camera sits in between the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and Canon EOS 6D Mark II DSLR models, similar full-frame Canon camera comparisons.

Canon EOS R versus Canon EOS RP, which one should I choose?

A golden question, an answer that would only be known by you inside your heart, mind and brains. I would be writing more in-depth with detailed views, thoughts, comparisons with the Canon EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera and finally why we chose the Canon EOS RP over the Canon EOS R.

I hope that my two review articles and my comparisons, thoughts, views and  analysis article of the two Canon full-frame mirrorless cameras would help you to make a decision on which Canon full-frame mirrorless cameras to choose from.

During my recent videography assignment with Hpility SG, we were covering  Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2019. During the assignment that took place over the festival period, I got the opportunity to learn a lot more about Singapore’s shipping industry, not just from my videography shoot, also from my visits to Singapore Maritime Gallery and SMW 2019 Exhibition.

This was also a major assignment for me, using the Canon EOS R (review unit) in an earlier preparation shoot before SMW 2019 started and the Canon EOS RP (personal set) during SMW 2019 itself. Both the Canon EOS R and EOS RP did well, delivered the goods and it was mission accomplished! More of the videography (and photography) reviews from the Canon EOS R and EOS RP would be published in my upcoming review articles.

The key highlight for me, from our various videography shoots that we did during the SMW 2019, was the MPA Learning Journeys 2019 (SMW Edition) – Lighthouse tour. A visit to Raffles Lighthouse, the second oldest lighthouse among the five lighthouses still in use today in Singapore. Raffles Lighthouse was bulit on a rocky island called Pulau Satumu, overlooking the busy shipping route in the Singapore Strait.

On the boat ride to Raffles Lighthouse, participants were able to view the busy Singapore Strait shipping route and learned more about Singapore’s shipping history and importance. At Raffles Lighthouse, it totally blew us off, the bird’s eye view from the top of the Raffles Lighthouse, her history, overlooking the vast and busy Singapore Strait, with many different ships sailing in the channel.

As a heritage and history enthusiast myself, while I do know a bit of knowledge of Singapore’s shipping industry, during my videography coverage of SMW 2019, I realised that the shipping industry sector has a lot more for us Singaporeans to learn, know and understand on its history, significance, importance. I strongly encourage you to visit Singapore Maritime Gallery at Marina South Pier whereby visitors can learn so much more from our very own Maritime museum!

Reading through the information and details of Canon FilmFIVE Festival for this year 2019, this is a great opportunity for young students to learn more about filmmaking, unleash their creative potential and produce short films. They are able to get hands on learning and shooting with Canon latest cameras, the Canon EOS R and Canon EOS RP, both full-frame mirrorless cameras. I didn’t go into filmmaking at the start, I started off with photography (more than three decades back), from film to digital. For the past two years, I started to explore videos and filmmaking, learning a new skill, expanding and complementing my photography with filmmaking. Therefore, I started to learn videography and filmmaking through hands on work, thanks to my filmmaker friends guidance and teachings. With the arrival of the Canon EOS R and Canon EOS RP, I was involved in some shoots with the Canon EOS R when I was reviewing it earlier in Q1 2019 and also with the Canon EOS RP, that is now part of my photography gears setup. The video works that I did with the Canon EOS R and Canon EOS RP would be featured inside my upcoming review articles soon!

The Canon EOS R and Canon EOS RP, the two full-frame mirrorless cameras, can give you the opportunities to explore and produce both photography and filmmaking together, with its wide range of Canon lenses available. On a personal and professional basis, through exploring filmmaking with the Canon EOS RP, it’s exciting, learning a new skill, adding new knowledge and opening up my photography business services, digital and social media marketing and writing.

FilmFIVE Festival, a nationwide filmmaking competition which seeks to nurture young aspiring filmmakers from educational institutions and empower them to express their creativity through films and photography. In partnership with the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) this year, the FilmFIVE Festival will run from 27 April to 20 September 2019. 

“The inaugural FilmFIVE Festival in 2018 saw 44 teams work on producing their own films. We’ve received a lot of positive feedback and hence have decided to bring it back this year on a greater scale, with more workshops, more brand partners and we hope to see more teams participating this year,” said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore. “Canon is proud to provide a platform where youth can hone their creative filmmaking skills for a good cause.” 

“We are glad to be part of the Canon FilmFIVE Festival 2019. At NCPG, we absolutely believe that youths can make a positive impact on a wide range of issues. We are looking forward to hear from their unique perspectives as young film makers which we hope to help amplify to the wider community,” said Nicholas Aaron Khoo, Chairman of the NCPG Youth Sub-Committee. 

The theme for this year will be any word that begins with ‘Re’. Inspired by Canon’s new line of full frame mirrorless cameras – the EOS R and EOS RP – where the R stands for ‘Reimagine’, participants will create their short film according to their interpretation of the theme. There will be two categories, secondary school and open youth for participants below the age of 30. 

To equip youths with basic knowledge of filmmaking leading up to the closing of entries, there will be a complimentary three-day filmmaking boot camp workshop held in end June. Led by Canon Imaging Academy (CIA), participants will have a chance to shoot with Canon’s cameras and other production equipment supported by brand partners1. They can also loan Canon’s new full-frame mirrorless cameras to do their actual shoot after the boot camp. Additionally, in collaboration with local polytechnics, there will be five complimentary workshops conducted covering various topics of filmmaking across different polytechnics. 

Entries submission will close in mid-September and judging will commence in October. A gala screening of the nominees’ films and announcement of winners will take place in November. Winning entries for this competition will stand a chance to have their short films commissioned by NCPG.
