Smaller, Lighter and Better

The RF lens mount that the EOS R system is renowned for, has large diameter and short back focus design, that allow both lenses to take advantage of. All these result in both a compact optical system and excellent quality across the entire image, from edge to edge.

The RF100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM offers telephoto capability of up to 400mm zoom yet it is compact at less than 170mm in length, making it easily portable for users. Weighing at approximately 635g, the RF100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM lens is an affordable and lightweight telephoto lens option. It is also light than the RF24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens.  The RF100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM is comparable to the EF70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS II USM lens but features an additional 100mm to the telephoto end of the focal length.

The RF100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM lens has Nano USM, enabling quick and smooth focusing throughout the entire zoom range, regardless of stills or videos. This makes this lens a a great starter lens for those who are interested in bird and wildlife photography without the bulk.

Users can add the Extender RF1.4x/2x to the RF100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM lens, this would increase the focal length to 1.4x/2x, allowing them to enjoy shooting with an ultra-telephoto range of up to 800mm. When combined with Canon’s lightweight mirrorless cameras, users can trek long distances with it or shoot handheld comfortably without much difficulty.

An ultra-wide angle lens with a large f/2.8 aperture traditionally would cost a substantial amount to own. The new RF16mm f/2.8 STM lens is going to change that by overcoming the price barrier, making this lens at an accessible price point. Another outstanding feature of the RF16mm f/2.8 STM is its ultra-compact design. At just 40.2mm tall and weighing approximately 165g, it barely occupies any space in the camera bag. In fact, one can easily mistake it for the RF50mm f/1.8 STM lens, given that both share an almost identical form factor.

New Angle of View and Creative Perspectives

The RF100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM lens has a minimum focusing distance of just 1.05m (at 400mm), a maximum magnification of 0.41x can be achieved. These features would come in handy when shooting small flowers and creatures, bringing out the best of the lens compression effect and bokeh of telephoto lenses.

The lens comes with a native 5.5 stops of image stabilisation. However, when it is paired with a camera that has In-Body Image Stabilisation (In-Body IS), the IS effectiveness goes up to 6 stops. This greatly reduces camera shakes and ensures sharp images even at the 400mm telephoto end.

With the RF16mm f/2.8 STM, users can take powerful photos by adjusting perspectives to capture larger images of nearby objects or smaller images of faraway ones. The distortion effect of the ultra-wide angle lens when the user gets closer to a subject (such as animals and children) creates a warped look, resulting in adorable photos.

The ultra-wide angle of the RF16mm f/2.8 STM covers a 110 degree diagonal field of view. This makes it convenient for taking selfies with large groups, shooting video for social media, and taking photos in tight spaces. In addition, its large f/2.8 aperture not only creates pleasing bokeh, but when combined with the wide field of view, it can become an excellent lens for astrophotography as well.

Back-illuminated Stacked CMOS Sensor with DIGIC X

The Canon EOS R3 has a newly developed 24.1-megapixels back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor, combined with DIGIC X image processor, powering the EOS R3 to a number of ground breaking features that makes it the finest full-frame mirrorless camera in the EOS R system line-up. This EOS R3 camera is built primarily for speed, it also strikes a perfect balance between precision, performance and image quality.

At approximately 24.1-megapixels, the EOS R3 has approximately 20% more pixels as compared to the EOS-1D X Mark III and EOS R6. However, its resolution performance exceeds even the much higher 30.4-megapixels EOS 5D Mark IV.

High Speed Performance

For photographers in the sports, action, wildlife and press sectors that require high speed performance on their cameras, the EOS R3 is the camera for you. The EOS R3 electronic shutter can reach up to 30 fps while its mechanical shutter can reach up to 12 fps with AF/AE tracking. It’s also possible to achieve a shutter speed of up to 1/64,000 sec with the electronic shutter, this would allow photographers to capture ultra-fast subjects or using large aperture lenses under bright environments.

The Canon EOS R3 is equipped with dual card slots for CFexpress (Type-B) card that boasts ultra-fast read/write speeds and a SD (UHS-II) card, allowing for fast and reliable recording of image data. Thanks to DIGIC X’s incredibly high-speed processing capability, it’s possible to navigate menus and change settings while data is being written on a memory card.

Superior Image and Video Quality

For still photography, the EOS R3 has a native ISO range of 100 to 102.400 (expandable to 204,800). For videography, the range goes from 100 to 25,600 (expandable to 102,400). Due to the increased readout speed by the stacked CMOS sensor, rolling shutter distortion has been reduced to a minimum, which is particularly useful when shooting fast action sports or rapid panning action.

10-bit HEIF file format is also available in the EOSR3. HDR-PQ-like JPEG images with improved highlight gradations can be converted from HEIF files in-camera. With the HDR mode, users can achieve a single high dynamic range HEIF file from 3 HEIF composites automatically in as quickly as 0.02 seconds, making handheld HDR shooting an absolute breeze.

Like the EOS R5 and R6, the EOS R3 comes with In-Body Image Stabilisation(In-Body IS) of up to 5.5 stops. When paired with compatible RF lenses, the effectiveness can go up to 8 stops ,making long exposure shooting without a tripod a cinch.

To meet movie production needs, the EOS R3 is capable of recording 6K 60p RAW or 4K 120p 10-bit movie at the full-frame angle of field. High quality 4K 60p(oversampling from 6K) is also available for those who demand the very best quality. Canon Log 3 and HDR PQ are available, providing flexibility to match various postproduction workflows.

Intelligent and Precise Focus

The EOS R3 is featuring the game-changing Eye Control AF function for the first time since the EOS 7s (released in 2004). This allows users to select a focus point by purely using the movement of the eye. Multiple LEDs and sensors inside the newly developed EVF detect eye movement quickly, allowing photographers to instantly shit between different subjects without the need to fiddle around with buttons and controls. This helps them to quickly shift between AF targets, particularly when photographing motorsports and fast-moving subjects.

Eye Detection AF on the EOS R3 has been enhanced further with deep-learning technology. The camera is now able to focus on the eye if the face is partially covered or masked. Head Detection AF has also improved further, even when the athletes are wearing helmets or goggles, stable focusing can still be achieved in high-speed sports photography.

A newly added Vehicle Priority AF will also excite motorsport photographers. The AF can now detect automobiles and motorcycles with great precision. It can even detect the helmets of drivers when Spot Detection is enabled.

Another benefit from the high readout speed of the new sensor, combined with the processing power of DIGIC X, is the enhanced tracking accuracy. The EOS R3 can perform up to 60fps of AF calculation and tracking. This is three times of what the EOS-1 DX Mark III and EOS R5 can achieve, making it a breeze to track subjects that turn and change directions rapidly, such as ski racers or motorsport athletes.

With its low-luminance AF limit of EV-7.5, the EOS R3 can focus on subjects in an environment so dark that it is almost pitch black to the human eyes.

Seamless Connectivity for Swift Transfer

The EOS R3 has some of the best connectivity features in any Canon camera. Featuring Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS as standard modes, a dual band Wi-Fi that supports FTP and FTPS are also available, along with WPA3 for added security. For press photographers, wired LAN connectivity offers blazing fast transfer of files to remote FTP, FTPS or SFTP servers. All these are achieved without the need of any additional accessories.

For high-speed transfer, Mobile File Transfer allows the camera to transfer files quickly to a smartphone via a USB cable. By utilizing the ultra-fast 5G mobile network, the files can be transferred to remote servers swiftly.

Durability and Operability

As a professional grade mirrorless camera, the EOS R3 shares the same dust and drip resistance performance and shutter durability as the EOS-1D X Mark III.

The camera is equipped with a 3.2-inch (3:2) Vari-angle LCD touchscreen, a first for a professional body. It also boasts a resolution of approximately 4.15-million-dots, the highest ever in any Canon camera.

Canon has also developed a new 5.76-million-dot OLED EVF for the EOS R3. With a refresh rate of up to 120fps, the highly responsive EVF not only make spanning comfortable on the eye, but it also reduces time lag during continuous shooting. Featuring the same SmartController which first debuted on the EOS-1D X Mark III, it allows the user to quickly move the AF position around and double up as an AF-ON button.

Compatible with the proven LP-E19 high-capacity battery pack, photographers can be assured of a full day of shooting on a single charge. When the need arises, the battery can be charged using a mobile battery that supports Power Delivery(PD)via a compatible USB-C cable.

Despite its imposing look, the EOS R3 is 15% shorter than the EOS-1D X Mark III and weighs 30% lighter (CIPA standard). At822g (body only), the EOS R3 is also lighter than the EOS 5DS.

New Multi-function Shoe and Accessories

The EOS R3’s next generation Multi-function shoe adds functionalities beyond flash photography, with a series of new accessories designed to work with it.

The Multi-Function Shoe Directional Stereo Microphone DM-E1D is a full digital microphone that inherits most of the features from its analogue sibling, DM-E1. Other than being able to record digital audio directly, it adopts a battery-less and cable-less design. The Multi-function shoe can transmit audio data as well as supply power from the camera.The Menu button on the microphone allows quick access to the settings inside the camera menu for convenience.

Speedlite Transmitter ST-E10 is a new radio-enabled speedlite transmitter that works similarly to the Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT. It has the same battery-less design and quick menu access buttons as the DM-E1D. Most notably, the ST-E10’s ultra-compact design sports a 56% reduction in weight compared to the ST-E3-RT.

The Multi-Function Shoe Adapter AD-E1 is designed to allow existing speedlites that has dust and drip resistance design to be used on the EOS R3. Examples of such speedlites are the EL-1 and 600EX series. Speedlites without dust & drip resistance design such as the 430EX and 270EX series, however, can be mounted directly on the EOSR3.

Multi-Function Shoe Adapter for Smartphone Link AD-P1 is an accessory for mounting a smartphone on to the EOS R3’s Multi-function shoe. A dedicated USB cable allows fast transfer of images and videos from the camera to the smartphone. With the Mobile File Transfer smartphone app, photographers can send these hi-res images to a remote FTP server via 5G mobile network.This workflow will significantly enhance photographers’ efficiency in the field.

The Canon EOS R3 that is currently in development, is based on the concept of high speed, high sensitivity and high reliability. The EOS R3 will be introduced into Canon’s lineup of professional and enthusiast cameras that includes the EOS-1D X Mark III flagship DSLR camera (released in February 2020) and the EOS 5 series, including the EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera (released in July 2020). The EOS R3 aims to provide professional-level quality for both stills and video capture, even for moving subjects.

The EOS R3 is the first EOS series camera to be equipped with Canon’s newly developed 35mm full-frame backlit stacked CMOS sensor that makes possible high-speed readout. The camera also features a DIGIC X image processor for high-speed image processing that realises high-speed continuous shooting of up to 30 frames-per-second (1) (FPS) with AF/AE tracking when using the electronic shutter. In addition, the camera significantly reduces image warping, a common challenge with electronic shutters, and is also capable of capturing moving subjects with reduced noise in such low-light environments as indoor areas or nighttime scenes. 

Alongside Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology—by which each pixel on the image sensor possesses both image capture and phase-detect AF functionality, thus enabling high-speed, high-accuracy and wide-range AF—the EOS R3 uses an algorithm that employs deep learning technology that enables improved head and eye detection for human subjects as well as a new capability to detect subject torsos. Thanks to this enhanced performance, the camera’s autofocus system provides high-performance subject tracking, even during portrait photography and in scenarios with frequent subject movement such as sports. Development is also underway to enable detection of additional subject types. 

In addition, the EOS R3 is Canon’s first digital camera to feature Eye Control AF (2) functionality. When shooting still images and looking through the viewfinder, this new feature enables the AF frame to adjust according to detected movement of the user’s eye, making possible smoother shooting with quick focus when transitioning between subjects. 

The EOS R3 answers the sophisticated needs of professionals by providing dust and water resistance developed with each iteration of the EOS-1 series, body design with integrated vertical hand-grip, reliability and ease of use, as well as compatibility with Canon’s Mobile File Transfer (3), announced alongside the EOS R3, which supports high-speed workflows. 

Personal thoughts and views

As a current EOS-1D X Mark II user myself and a big fan of the Canon EOS 1D series cameras, the EOS R3 development news is very exciting for me! While I am eagerly awaiting the official announcement and technical specifications of the EOS R3. I am making a guess here that EOS R3 would be officially announced in Q3 2021, based on my experiences and coverage on the previous three Canon cameras, EOS-1D X Mark III and EOS R5 and R6 cameras.

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III announced its development in October 2019, it was then subsequently officially announced in January 2020.

As for Canon EOS R5, their development was announced in February 2020, in July 2020, Canon officially announced Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6.

Would the EOS R3 mark the start of my migration to a full Canon RF system setup? I do not have an answer at this point in time. The EOS R system and RF lenses have improved tremendously and expanded their lenses lineup from the time Canon announced  their first full-frame mirrorless camera EOS R, followed by the EOS RP to EOS R5 and EOS R6 of today. More RF lenses are coming, making the Canon EOS R and RF lenses eco-system an even more holistic and complete camera and lenses eco-system for both professionals and enthusiasts alike.

Since the EOS R3 is currently in development, the technical specifications are kept under wraps until it is officially announced. Just for the fun of it, I am making a guess on some of EOS R3 specifications:

EOS R3: 40MP, 8K video

With reference to selected Canon cameras, EOS-1D X Mark III: 20.1MP, 4K video | EOS R5: 45MP, 8K video | EOS R6: 20.1MP, 4K video | EOS 5D Mark IV: 30.1MP, 4K video

The 70-200mm focal length lens is a lens that is highly coveted by many photographers, a workhorse and versatile lens. Having both f/2.8 and f/4 models in the 70-200mm series, it caters to both professionals and enthusiasts alike. I previously owned a EF70-200mm f/4 L USM lens before moving to my current EF70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens, both f/4 and f/2.8 lenses are excellent in optics and quality. For photographers into commercial work, the f/2.8 lens would be highly recommended. I am currently reviewing the RF70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens, I am hugely impressed by its quality and focus speed. With the announcement of the RF70-200mm f/4 L IS USM lens, photographers (who are current Canon EOS R system users or those who are thinking/planning to embark on the EOS R system) can be assured of the excellent optics and quality of the RF70-200mm L series lenses are built upon from Canon’s strong foundations and proven excellence in their EF70-200mm L series lenses.

The RF70-200mm f/4 L IS USM is the world’s shortest and lightest (1) 70-200mm f/4 interchangeable lens, bringing a host of new features that will entice advanced amateurs and professionals who are particular about image quality and performance. RF70-200mm f/4 L IS USM – Small, Light and Far

The 70-200mm telephoto zoom lens is a versatile lens, very ideal and especially important if you like to shoot sports or wildlife. In other photography genres such as portraiture, events, the 70-200mm telephoto lens is a lens that most commercial photographers would have in their photography setup. For those who into travel photography, the RF70-200mm f/4 L IS USM lens is going to be a great addition, top quality telephoto lens yet lightweight and portable in size. While a telephoto lens usually comes with a cost due to the extra weight and size, the new RF70-200mm f/4 L IS USM bucks the trend by being the world’s smallest and lightest 70-200mm f/4 lens.

With most 70-200mm lenses weighing 800g and measuring an average of 176mm in length, the RF70-200mm f/4L IS USM comes in a lighter and slimmer body that weighs 695g while achieving a 32% reduction in length at just 119mm long. In fact, the RF70-200mm f/4L IS USM is only marginally longer than the RF24-105mm f4L IS USM lens. 

With its weight and length, making it easy to handle and carry around, it can be stored in a bag while still attached to the camera, unlike other conventional telephoto lenses that have to be removed from the camera before it can be stored away. Having the camera and lens attached inside your camera bag, allows you to start shooting right after taking the camera out from your bag, thus you will not/never miss the priceless movements and opportunities that you always strive to capture on your camera.

RF70-200mm f/4 L IS USM – Quiet and Sharp Shots All The Time

The RF70-200mm f/4L IS USM is able to deliver high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. Even when shooting at the longest 200mm end, the lens elements are arranged to reduce vignetting, chromatic aberration and ghosting. Conversely, the 9-blade circular aperture in the RF70-200mm f/4L IS USM maximises bokeh even at the edges of the image for soft, blurry backgrounds. 

The lens is also equipped with a Nano USM, Canon’s latest lens motor which has excellent high-speed performance. Focusing is highly accurate at any focal length even if the subject is standing at a distance. The Nano USM is also incredibly quiet, smooth, and suppresses focus breathing, which helps to produce fluid video shots. 

Not everyone shoots with a tripod and trying to keep a camera outfitted with a telephoto zoom lens steady can be a challenge, often resulting in blurry shots. RF70-200mm f/4L IS USM comes with an in-built Image Stablizer (IS) that provides up to 5-stops image stabilisation to ensure sharp images even when shooting handheld. The image stabilisation can go up to 7.5- stops when paired with either EOS R5 or EOS R6, allowing you to casually capture sharp images handheld when shooting dark scene even at the longest 200mm end. 

While commonly overlooked, a lens’ minimum focusing distance is an important specification. Regardless of the genre of photography you are interested in, the ability to focus at a much closer distance provides more flexibility when it comes to composing a shot. The RF70-200mm f/4L IS USM comes with a minimum focusing distance of 0.6m, which is much closer compared to the average distance of 1m for similar lenses. The reduction in minimum focusing distance also allows the RF70-200mm f/4L IS USM to achieve a maximum of 0.28x magnification. 

The RF70-200mm f/4L IS USM’s robust construction ensures that it is dust- and water-resistant with the extended part of the lens barrel possessing vibration and shock resistance as well. Coated with a heat shielding paint, the entire lens will perform optimally even in hot weather while the surface of the lens’ front element has a fluorine coating which repels oil and water. 

RF50mm f/1.8 STM – Getting the Prime Shot

One of the most popular focal lengths to shoot at, the humble 50mm prime lens is usually one of the first upgrades from a kit lens. The new RF50mm f/1.8 STM adds a large aperture of f/1.8 for low-light performance and those sought-after dreamy backgrounds in portrait shots. Compact and lightweight, it is ideal for street photography and snapshots without having to lug around a bulky lens. 

Offering a similar field of view as the human eye, the RF50mm f/1.8 STM is also suitable for many types of photography such as portraits, landscapes, and food photography. The minimum focusing distance of 30cm means you can get closer to the food, small items, and products that you are shooting. 

Despite being an affordable single focal length lens, the RF50mm f/1.8 STM has outstanding image quality due to the combination of its large aperture, the short back focus of the RF mount and the use of the PMo aspherical lens. Flaring, ghosting and coma aberration are all reduced, which results in clear, high-resolution images.

The RF85mm f/2 IS STM offers more flexibility with its ability to shoot both portraits and macro, while the RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM offers super telephoto focal lengths of 600mm and 800m respectively at an affordable price.

Lightweight, compact and affordable super telephoto lenses

Telephoto lenses are usually associated with big aperture prime lenses and they can be pretty expensive, big and heavy in weight. The RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM lenses are going to change this mindset, designed to lower the barriers of entry for photographers to own super telephoto lenses by making them more affordable, compact and lightweight.

By working together with the DIGIC X image processor and high-performance CMOS sensor in the EOS R series cameras, the RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM are capable of delivering high image quality even at high ISO settings despite their affordable price. All made possible with the RF mount technology that made lenses previously impossible to design possible now. Utilising a single DO (Diffractive optical element) lens instead of the traditional use of multiple lens elements at the front of the RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM has contributed to the lighter lens weight. The single DO lens not only has the optical characteristics of multiple lenses but is able to produce high image quality with reduced chromatic aberration.

High-strength plastics are used for the main construction of both lenses, contributing further to the lightweight design whereas metal parts are used on parts like the lens mount and tripod ring where strength is crucial. The fixed f/11 apertures of both lenses, which omits the need for an aperture adjustment mechanism, also helps reduce the weight. The incredible reduction in weight of the two super telephoto lenses make them possible for handheld use. In fact, the RF600mm f/11 IS STM is approx. 30% of the weight of the much bigger and heavier EF600mm f/4L IS III USM lens. Similarly, the RF800mm f/11 IS STM is approx. 28% of the weight of the EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM lens.

On top of the significant weight reduction, both lenses have a retractable structure which makes them a lot more portable. Users can easily stow the lens away without having to get a dedicated bag just for the lens. The lens barrel can be extended when shooting, while retracting can be done by rotating the lock ring on the mount before storing the lens away.

When retracted, the RF600mm f/11 IS STM is 45% of the length of the EF600mm f/4L IS III USM lens. Meanwhile, the RF800mm f/11 IS STM is 61% of the length of the EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM lens when retracted. With the significant downsize, it makes transportation and storage of these lenses a breeze.

The RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM are also compatible with the new Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x for RF lenses, making it possible to achieve a maximum reach of 1600mm (when RF800mm f/11 IS STM is paired with Extender RF 2x).

Image Stabiliser (IS) function to assist in handheld shooting

The RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM are equipped with Canon’s Optical Image Stabiliser feature. The RF600mm f/11 IS STM achieves an image stabilisation (IS) effect of up to 5 stops (based on CIPA standard) and the RF800mm f/11 IS STM achieves an IS effect of 4 stops (based on CIPA standard). The IS function significantly reduces camera shake, which is particularly noticeable in super telephoto shooting and helps to stabilise the image, making it effective to control focus.

Stunning portraits and creative possibilities with macro function

The EF85mm f/1.8 lens has been one of Canon’s best-selling EF lens line up, and the RF85mm f/2 IS STM continues that legacy with its large f/2 aperture, with macro function and Hybrid Image Stabilisation for added performance. The 85mm focal length is ideal for portraits while the large f/2 aperture results in dreamy bokeh and low light shooting capabilities.

With a minimum shooting distance of 0.35m and the ability to achieve 0.5x magnification, the RF85mm f/2 IS STM opens up more opportunities for more creative and unique images. This comes in especially useful for wedding photographers who wants a portrait lens that could double up to shoot details of rings and decorations.

When the RF85mm f/2 IS STM is used with the EOS R5, up to 8 stops of image stabilisation can be achieved in tandem with the In-Body Image Stabiliser. This feature greatly expands the possibilities of expression especially when a tripod is not available or cannot be used.

Pricing and Availability 

The RF600mm f/11 IS STM will be available at $1,169 while the RF800mm f/11 IS STM will be available for $1,509. Both lenses will be available for sale from 30 July 2020.

Upon reading the brief description of the Canon EOS R5 that is currently being developed, I am really excited. I have (followed, documented, reviewed, used, sold, bought) Canon’s mirrorless journey from EOS M to EOS R, from using the EOS M (my parents camera), sold it off and we changed to the Canon EOS RP. The development of Canon EOS R5 reinforces Canon’s statement and commitment to the full-frame mirrorless camera segment. From the time when I attended Canon EXPO Shanghai 2016, I published “The Next Wave and Trends”, they have come a long way since then with their mirrorless cameras segment.

When the Canon EOS R5 is officially released along with 9 more RF lenses in 2020, I can start on part 2 of my continuation of Canon’s mirrorless journey, EOS R family and RF lenses.  the Canon EOS R5 could be the game changer in the full-frame mirrorless camera market. They fulfil the requirements/desires that photographers wish/want inside their camera. Although I did speak about/debate whether IBIS is a must have in my previous articles, if it’s packed inside the Canon EOS R5, I am happy too!

What can we expect from the upcoming Canon EOS R5? Let me share with you more information below:

Canon EOS R5

The new full-frame mirrorless camera currently under development will fully leverage the advantages of the EOS R System to realise high-speed continuous shooting, 8K video recording and expanding the boundaries of visual expression. In addition, it can contribute to more efficient workflows thanks to improved transmission functionality, operability and reliability. These enhancements and more will help the new camera elevate the EOS Series concept of “Speed, Comfort and High image-quality” to a higher level.

Canon’s EOS R5, the first of the next-generation full-frame mirrorless cameras in the company’s EOS R System, will include a newly developed CMOS sensor that makes possible advanced features such as high-speed continuous shooting – up to approximately 20 frames per second (fps) using an electronic shutter and up to approximately 12 fps using a mechanical shutter – to facilitate shooting of athletes at sporting events and other fast moving subjects. In addition, the camera’s 8K video capture capability will enable users to extract high-resolution still images from video footage as well as process 8K video into higher-quality 4K videos, opening up new possibilities for visual expression. What’s more, the EOS R5 will be the first Canon camera equipped with a high-performance coordinated Image Stabilization (IS) system that integrates the camera’s in-body IS with IS systems on attached RF lenses. The camera will also feature dual media card slots and support automatic transfers of image files from the device to the image.canon cloud platform.

From Canon Marketing Japan YouTube video above, the Canon EOS R5 looks really solid and impressive, the built, aesthetics and design, looks really close to the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.

Tokyo 2020 Olympics will begin on 24th July 2020, my personal view/prediction is that the Canon EOS R5 would make their debut and appearance during this international sporting event in Tokyo, Japan (about 5 months from the announcement today on 13th February 2020)

9 x RF Lenses on the horizon in Year 2020

Canon is also developing a total of 9 RF lenses scheduled for release during 2020, including the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM, Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x.

As more RF lenses are introduced into their lineup, this would be good news for photographers who wish to invest/switch into the EOS R and RF lenses setup. What are the lenses on your wish list that you would like to be on the RF lenses setup? Maybe the RF 135mm, RF 100mm Macro, RF 24mm? Just some of my own predictions here!

With the introduction of the Extender RF 1.4x and 2x, this to me is an indication of the big RF prime lenses to come, maybe the RF 300mm f/2.8L, RF 400mm f/2.8L ? Or the RF 500mm and RF 600mm? I am making my own predictions here!

RF24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM

A new RF lens being added to their RF family of lenses, five stops IS capabilities, giving photographers more affordable RF lenses options without compromising image quality. The small and lightest RF zoom lens available to date, weighing only 395g and 88.8mm in length. They are reasonably priced and available as a kit lens for EOS RP and EOS R.

The Canon EOS R5, RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM, Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x will be on display in the Canon booth at the CP+ Camera and Photo Imaging Show 2020, to be held from 27 February to 1 March at the Pacifico Yokohama convention hall in Yokohama, Japan.

At this point in time, I am really excited, the Canon EOS R5 might just be the camera that I am looking at, to slot into my current setup, in between my Canon EOS-1DX Mark II and Canon EOS RP. My initial plan is a Canon EOS 5D Mark III or EOS 5D Mark IV, I didn’t go ahead as I am waiting for Canon to announce the high end EOS R model before deciding, with the announcement of the Canon EOS R5, it seems that it has now come true!

Would the Canon EOS R5 eventually come into my setup? Maybe yes! There are also now more RF lenses arriving soon for photographers to build up their system.

The Canon EOS R is Canon’s first full frame mirrorless camera that was announced in September 2018, I had the opportunity to review the Canon EOS R and I currently have the Canon EOS RP as part of my photography setup. I had been following the Canon mirrorless journey from Canon EOS M to EOS R, looking forward to more announcements and developments from the Canon EOS R and RF lenses family!

The 70-200mm focal length range is one of the most popular lens used by both professionals and leisure photographers around the world. It’s versatile and can be used in a number of photography genres including landscape photography. From events, portraiture, sports and wildlife photography, the 70-200mm lens is a “staple” lens for many photographers. For commercial photography work, the f/2.8 does make a difference, one of the reasons that made me changed from my EF70-200mm f/4 L USM to EF70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM a few years back.

The Canon 70-200mm L series lenses are really good, excellent quality and optics, for both the f/4 and f/2.8 series. One of my favourite lenses, the EF70-200mm f/4 was actually my second L lens and I used it for 10 years before upgrading to EF70-200mm f/2.8 for my commercial photography work. Canon has many years of professional experience and manufacturing quality in the L lenses, I am confident that this new RF70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM telephoto lens would continue on Canon’s 70-200mm L lenses legacy. 

With the announcement of the RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens, I would have options to add this to my Canon EOS RP setup or continue using my EF70-200mm f/2.8L lens with the adaptor. How I would want to build my Canon EOS RP and RF lenses setup, it’s still a work in progress (and a lot to strategise and plan) since I have my existing Canon EOS-1DX Mark II DSLR inside my setup.

For those who have just started/concentrating on the Canon EOS R and RF lenses system, you have less headache and can start to welcome the new RF lenses being announced and arriving into the market. The new RF L lenses announcements showed Canon’s commitment to the Canon EOS R and RF lenses lineup, I am looking forward to more lenses on their RF lenses roadmap!

Let me share with you more information and details on the RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM telephoto lens:

“The RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM completes Canon’s Zoom Trinity Lenses, the other two lenses  being the RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM and RF24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM,” said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore. “The shooting range of the RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is incredibly diverse with its ability to shoot from still portraits to fast-moving sporting activities. Together with its lightweight and compact body, the RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM truly makes for an ideal partner in producing high quality images.”

Reduction in Overall Length and Weight

Compared to the well-established EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM lens (the existing EF mount model), the RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is approximately 27% shorter and 28% lighter. In shooting situations, the lens and camera body combination is about 30% lighter compared to the existing EF lens and DSLR body combination. This would significantly help to lighten the load for shooting over a long period of time.

By using an extending zoom type design, coupled with the large diameter mount, short back focus and effective use of aspherical lenses, there is a significant reduction in the total length of the lens when it is at its shortest.

With a length of approximately 170.2mm when stored with its lens and dust cap, the RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM can be easily stored in a camera backpack, leaving room for other lenses or equipment.

New Optical Design with Electronic Floating Focus System

With the large diameter and short back focus of the new EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera system, this significantly increases the degree of freedom in lens design compared to conventional EF lenses, while maintaining high image quality.

The new optical design of the RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM consists of 17 elements in 13 groups, with two aspherical lenses, four UD lenses and one super UD lens. For the very first time, Canon is using an electronic float focus control in the RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM that drives the two lens groups individually. This feature makes the lens more compact and reduces the minimum focusing distance from 1.2m to 0.7m. With electronic floating focus control, ‘breathing’ due to focus movement can also be reduced so movies can be shot with a stable composition.

The RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is designed with Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC), a special coating that enables excellent anti-reflectivity. This coating effectively suppresses reflections in situations where the light source appears on the screen, reducing flaring and ghosting.

High Speed and Smooth AF for Still and Movie Shooting with Two Nano USMs

For the very first time on a Canon lens, two thumb sized ultrasonic motors known as Nano USM are included in the RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM and used for the floating focus control. By using two Nano USMs for lens driving, a high degree of quietness, power saving, and high-speed operation are achieved while retaining the compact size. This also achieves high-speed, high-precision still image AF and smooth movie AF in combination with the Dual Pixel CMOS AF in the EOS R series cameras.

The RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is equipped with an IS (lens-based image stabiliser) with a CIPA standard of five stops for still images. There are also three IS modes which are optimised for subject movement – IS mode 1 for still subjects, IS mode 2 for panning and IS mode 3 for irregular movement such as sports. 

Durable and Built to Last

As an L-series lens designed for professional use, the RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM adopts unique extendable design that allows air to pass through but not dust and moisture. This ensures water and dust resistance which makes it an ideal companion even during unfavourable weather conditions.

The RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is the first RF lens designed with a white heat shield coating, which suppresses the rise in temperature, especially when it is used during hot weather. A lens

hood in the same colour as the RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is also included, with a sliding window for easy operation of polarising filters with the hood attached.

Canon has also newly developed a compact tripod mount that can be easily removed with a simple operation. The easy-to-read index allows users to quickly change the vertical and horizontal framing when using a tripod.

For photographers who specialise in the portraiture photography genre, the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS lens would definitely be of interest to you! The 85mm focal length is one of the popular focal length choices used by portraiture photographers. Having tried out the EF85mm f/1.2L and EF85mm f/1.4L lenses, and having reviewed the EF85mm f/1.4L previously, I personally prefer using the f/1.4 focal length.

I would be keen to test and review the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS lens, some time down the road when the opportunity arises. Using my previous knowledge and experience using the EF85mm f/1.2L and f/1.4L lenses, the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS lens would be able to continue on Canon’s 85mm L lenses legacy.

Unique DS Coating for Smooth Bokeh

With Canon’s proprietary vapour-deposited coating technology, the DS coating has the effect of gradually decreasing the transmittance of light from the centre to the periphery of the lens. This produces a smooth gradient bokeh that provides that beautiful expression as soft blurring can be achieved all around the outline of the bokeh. To optimise the effect, DS coating is used on the front and rear surface of the lens, allowing users to achieve high optical performance when shooting. The optical performance of the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS, together with the previously released RF85mm f/1.2L USM lens, even surpasses that of the renowned EF85mm f/1.2L USM lens.

With the large aperture of f/1.2, the soft and smooth gradient bokeh effect of the DS coating is maximised. The unique DS feature of the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS adds a special touch to images in various settings, ranging from weddings and portraits, fashion or lifestyle scenarios.

A Large Aperture Lens with Superior Resolution

When it comes to large aperture lenses, the 85mm focal length has been the ideal choice for portrait photographers, allowing them to create natural-looking portraits with beautiful bokeh in the background. The RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS has an optical design of 13 elements in 9 groups, including Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics (BR) optical element, 1 UD and 1 ground aspherical lens element. The BR and UD lenses help to greatly suppress chromatic aberration, resulting in excellent rendering performance.

The lens also features Canon’s proprietary Air Sphere Coating (ASC) to reduce lens flare and ghosting caused by reflections, as well as enhance image clarity and contrast when shooting back-lit subjects.

Thanks to its bright aperture of f/1.2 and 9-blade circular aperture, the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS delivers beautiful and soft background blur. The large aperture also allows users to capture sharp and crisp images in low light environments with a higher shutter speed.

The lens achieves a minimum focusing distance of 0.85m and 0.12x maximum magnification, expanding the shooting area from close-ups of people to shooting small objects.

A Brand New Shooting Experience

The RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS also features a new “control ring” found in new RF lens series, allowing users to assign settings that include aperture value, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity and exposure compensation. The tactile control ring gives the user precise control allowing accurate adjustment without looking away from the subject.

When the control ring is operated alongside the main dial and quick control dial on the EOS R camera, user will have three dials to set the aperture, shutter speed and ISO sensitivity respectively, simplifying the complex operations that initially required several steps to achieve.

For flexible adaption to changes in the environment, users can assign exposure compensation to the control ring during portrait shooting. In the case when there is a sudden change in lighting conditions, the user can use one hand to operate the control ring and adjust exposure compensation while simultaneously using the shutter button with the other hand.

Being an L-lens for professionals, the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS’s weatherproof construction also makes it dust and water-resistant, making it the perfect choice of lens for photographers who enjoy outdoor photography.
