Canon first announced the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM lens in July 2020, I managed to get a short hands on experience with the EOS R5, EOS R6 and new RF lenses (RF100-500mm, RF600mm and RF800mm) shortly after the new EOS R cameras and RF lenses announcements were made. While the shorts hand on experience was short, I was keen to have a go with the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens when the opportunity arises. The opportunity came in January 2021 and here is my Canon RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM review.

In my short hands on experience article that I published in July 2020, I confessed that I wasn’t really into lenses with focal length range of 100-500mm as my setup was geared towards the holy trinity setup and big prime lenses. During the period when I was reviewing the Canon RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens, I was enlightened, my perceptions and views of this focal length range changed.

A favourite lens for wildlife photographers

I have been reading and looking at Facebook groups/pages posts on wildlife photographs shot in Singapore. There is a trend on these combinations of Canon EOS R5 or EOS R6 with RF100-500mm lens. I had chats with the folks from my local camera shop that I regularly go to, this is quite a popular camera and lens combination that the photographers wanted to get.

When I had the RF100-500mm lens with the Canon EOS R5 for review, I finally understood and realise why this is such a popular combination and setup. From my adventures at Jurong Bird Park, to West Coast Park, Bukit Batok Nature Park, Pasir Ris Park and Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. I photographed quite a lot of wildlife photographs.

The 100mm to 500mm range is versatile for wildlife photography, you would not be constrained by shorter focal lengths or a fixed focal length lens. The photographs quality are sharp even when shooting at its maximum aperture.

This would not be the fastest lens since it’s not a constant aperture lens, nevertheless the AF is pretty impressive and fast when paired with the EOS R5 body (and I believe it would be just as good with the EOS R6 body too).

More than just a lens for wildlife and sports photography

Although this lens is probably going to be more geared towards wildlife and sports photography, it’s a versatile lens that photographers can use for sports, travel and landscapes too. While I didn’t get the opportunity to photograph sports events with this lens, I was able to photograph people/machines in action from a distance away and landscapes too.

Photographing landscapes with this 100mm to 500mm focal length range telephoto lens is probably less common, even less common in Singapore when it’s a small country by land size and honestly speaking, it doesn’t have much of a wide and vast landscapes in big countries that I visited. Using the RF100-500mm to shoot landscapes in Singapore, I managed to capture some beautiful moments that I really like and didn’t expect to come out in a way that I would expect from my travel photography trips overseas.

Personal thoughts and views

This is a lens that change my view on long focal length range telephoto zoom lens. While I am a user and supporter of zoom lenses such as 24-70mm and 70-200mm focal range, a longer range focal length such as 70-300mm or 100-400mm didn’t attract me as much initially in my photography adventures. I was more inclined towards prime telephoto lens such as the 300mm f/2.8L for their speed and optics. During the period when I was reviewing the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens, it changed my view and approach towards wildlife, sports and action photography. I am now more inclined towards focal length range telephoto zoom lens, keen to get this lens some time down the road.

Key factors and points that convinced and changed me after using RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens

Lighter in weight

More versatile than a fixed focal length prime lens

Easier to carry and move around with faster reaction time when photographing wildlife/sports versus a fixed prime lens on a tripod

The optics quality and AF speed is excellent considering that it’s not a fixed focal length prime lens

Price is a lot lower as compared to a fixed focal length prime lens

A versatile, portable and not too heavy telephoto zoom lens with excellent optics quality that is comparable to a prime lens. Since it’s not a constant aperture lens, the auto-focus speed may not be as fast as a prime lens. However, when paired with the Canon EOS R5 or R6, the AF speed is still pretty fast and impressive.

This remarkable lens is very Ideal for wildlife, sports and travel, sometimes landscapes too. In the wildlife and birding community, a number of photographers have the Canon EOS R5 or Canon EOS R6 and RF100-500mm setup, a powerful, ideal, excellent and popular combination of both AF speed, AF accuracy, optics and output quality (45MP Canon EOS R5 sensor provides lot of details even when cropping in).

The Canon RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens is a versatile, portable and not too heavy telephoto zoom lens, very ideal and suitable for wildlife photographers, sports and travel. This highly capable long range telephoto zoom lens gives photographers options to choose from for their wildlife or sports photography. A value for money top quality Canon L lens that gives photographers, versatility and portability versus the more expensive prime telephoto lens. Whether it is a telephoto zoom lens or telephoto prime lens, photographers have the options available to choose from.

Born to Rule, the Canon EOS R5 is finally and officially announced, along with EOS R6 and new RF lenses, RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM and trio of RF-mount prime lenses. These are exciting times ahead for the photography industry (especially Canon photographers)! I had been using Canon’s range DSLR and mirrorless cameras, reviewing, writing and covering stories on Canon’s development over the years. Thanks to Canon Singapore, I was able to get a short hands on experience with EOS R5, EOS R6 and new RF lenses.

Before I proceed further, this is NOT a review article. This article are my insights, thoughts, views from my short hands on experience along with my Q&A session with Canon Singapore Marketing. This article would be more like a continuation, Part Two of an earlier article that I published, “The Canon Mirrorless Journey from EOS M to EOS R”. Although it is NOT a review article, it’s a bit lengthy in content.

Through my session with Canon Singapore Marketing, I had a better understanding on the new EOS R cameras and RF lenses. In a nutshell, the EOS Family Hierarchy looks like this

EOS 1DX

EOS R5

EOS 5D

EOS R + EOS R6

Now let me share my thoughts and views of my short hands on experience with EOS R5, EOS R6 and new RF lenses.

EOS R5

This is the Canon full-frame mirrorless camera that photographers want and have been waiting for. Canon has listened to photographers and customers feedback, this camera now has dual media cards slot. The iconic and well liked joystick and wheel controls are back on the EOS R5. The body and layout is similar to the EOS R.

A hybrid camera, best of both worlds, for stills photography and videography, 8K video with no cropping and 45 megapixels. That’s a powerful camera for photographers, videographers and content producers.

8K video recording overheating concern?

An issue that has been nitpicked by some overseas photography websites, a point to take note but with a wrong approach and mentality by the websites, probably a clickbait to drive web traffic to their website.

I brought up this topic for discussion as I was doing some homework and research from overseas websites and YouTube channels that are talking about this particular topic. From my understanding, maximum recording time is 29min 59 sec.

You can find Movie Shooting Time (or Movie Recording Time) Limit inside the camera’s manual by Canon. Raise your hands, how many of you read the whole manual, whether in pdf format or physical copy?

When the Canon EOS R5 camera manual is available, I would download and have a read.

Points to take note from a photographer/videographer practical perspective:

EOS R5 is a hybrid full-frame mirrorless camera that can do stills photography and videography. It’s not a standalone dedicated video camera recorder.

If you are looking to shoot non-stop 4K video for a long continuous period of time, you need to look at camcorders instead. The Canon Cinema EOS Camcorders and Camcorders are calling out to you.

How often do you record video non-stop for 30 minutes and beyond? Unless you are mainly shooting conferences, major seminars presentation or live performances.

Even if you are into producing vlogs, YouTube videos, short filmmaking, how often do you and can you video for 30mins or more without a break or pause, to check, reshoot?

Should I have updated information and details on this, I might update it here or in my review article down the road.

In-Body IS + lens IS = holy combo, that’s what it should be, Canon now leads the way

The photography industry was talking/discussing a lot on internet and social media a few years back. While it may seem that Canon took a much longer time to implement In-Body Image Stabiliser (In-Body IS), they didn’t want to put it in for the sake of putting it in.

Yes, Canon listen to the feedback on the ground, from photographers and customers. This probably took them a bit longer than launching their full-frame mirrorless camera, a In-Body IS that works with the lens IS, with a new algorithm through new DIGIC X, “talking, coordinating and controlling” both IS on lens and camera body to work in tandem together simultaneously.

That’s the way it should be for cameras utilising In-Body IS and lens IS, Canon now leads the way.

Combining the best of the best together

This EOS R5 brings some of the best of the EOS Series, EOS 5D Mark IV (for its stills + video) + EOS 5DS or EOS 5DS R (MF quality stills photography) + latest DIGIC X + new sensor + revolutionary RF technology + EOS R series camera body, all together into that EOS R5.

EOS R6

For photographers who are a fan of the EOS-1DX series, you can go for the Canon EOS R6, it’s a mini EOS-1DX Mark III since it has inherited much of its hardware and technical specifications into the EOS R6 body.

If you do not need the 8K video functions and high 45 megapixels, the EOS R6 is very suitable and more affordable, you can still shoot in 4K and with 20 megapixels, you can get most photography jobs done without too much worries. EOS R5 and EOS R6 have similar design, layout and functionalities. The top layout is similar to the Canon EOS RP layout.

The EOS R6 would be highly suitable for those wanting and ready to move into full-frame mirrorless cameras, whether you are an existing EOS DSLR user, or migrating from other brands, upgrading from APS-C cameras to full-frame camera.

RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens

This focal length range lens hasn’t really caught my attention previously as my setup is towards the holy trinity setup and big prime lens. However, I have to say that this focal length of 100-500mm range is versatile, lightweight and ideal for wildlife photography, sports and events photography too.

I would love to try this lens out for wildlife photography when the opportunity arises to review this lens.

RF Extender 1.4x and RF Extender 2x

I sense exciting times ahead for the RF mount lenses. When would the RF300mm f/2.8 or RF400mm f/2.8 be out in the market?

RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF 800mm f/11 IS STM

We photographers and consumers need a mindset change that telephoto lenses must be at big apertures? Can telephoto lenses be lightweight, affordable and easy to use at f/11 aperture? The RF600mm and RF800mm are going to open up leisure (and maybe even commercial) photographers into owning telephoto lens.

If you have the opportunity to try either one of the two telephoto lens, pair it with the RF Extender 2x and you would be able to see, feel and understand the power of Dual Pixel CMOS AF II in action, check out the AF at f/22.

The materials used and built quality is pretty good for RF600mm and RF800mm lenses, considering that they are non L lenses.

RF85mm f/2 IS STM

A popular focal length, the 85mm, ideal for portraits, can also be used as a macro lens as well. Affordable and lightweight.

Final thoughts and views

Born to rule, a new era in the mirrorless camera segment, usability and durability, commitment to RF mount, EOS R full frame mirrorless. Excitement, Canon full-frame mirrorless is no longer playing catch up, it’s now leading the way.

Canon does listen to customers feedback and concerns, they are aware of the needs and wants of photographers. I still remember these two quotes that I wrote down, given by Canon Inc executives from my media sessions in 2016 at Canon EXPO Shanghai,

“We may look conservative but we know the trends”

“We are not complacent”

Canon is and has always been committed to the mirrorless camera market, the messages were clear back then, even though there were no specific timeline nor indication of cameras to come. While Canon’s journey in full-frame mirrorless cameras, delivering the EOS R5 and EOS R6 to the market today in 2020, took a bit of a longer route and time, photographers now have a top range full-frame mirrorless EOS R5, accompanied by EOS R6, EOS R and EOS RP. Canon now has a range of different full-frame mirrorless cameras catering for most (if not all) photography genres.

The EOS R5 is highly suitable for production houses, commercial photographers, videographers, filmmakers, almost able to cover all genres of photography. A powerful hybrid camera for both stills photography and videography, the best of both worlds.

The price might be on the high side, yet given the power technical specifications, this is a worthy investment for the next 3-5 years, especially for those commercial photographers and production houses.

What does the future holds for the EOS R and RF lenses family?

Canon has now set a high level benchmark for themselves and the full-frame mirrorless camera industry. Expectations would now be even higher. More RF lenses are on the pipeline, making the EOS R and RF mount series even more exciting in the very near future.

An equivalent of the 1DX series EOS R? This would keep me very excited and interested.

On a personal/commercial photographer and videography/filmmaking approach

EOS R5, the hybrid camera for both commercial photography, videography and filmmaking. I always like the EOS 5D series and wanting to own a 5D Mark III or 5D Mark IV. The EOS R5 would be a great (almost perfect fit) as it covers both photography and videography.

I have held back on getting a EOS 5D series as I am eagerly awaiting the next EOS R series camera even though I am using EOS RP and my trusted EOS-1DX Mark II. Now with the EOS R5 and R6, I have a good headache to plan, strategise and consider, how should I go about setting up my photography and videography combination, maybe it’s time to start my mini production house and digital marketing agency.

The EOS R5 is the Canon full-frame professional mirrorless camera that many photographers are eagerly, anxiously or patiently waiting and wanting. It has finally arrived! Content creation and consumption of media is moving towards video in this current timeline and near future, the EOS R5 and R6 are going to be your trusted content creation gadgets.

I am most likely not buying the EOS R5 when it is officially out for sale in the market at the end of July 2020, as much as I would love to own this powerful packed (almost perfect) full-frame mirrorless camera, due to financial constraints and current economic downturn. However, I am looking at getting it some time down the road, maybe in 1 year’s time. The EOS R6 is good too, however my preference is the EOS R5.

On the other hand, I do hope that I would be able to test and review the Canon EOS R5, EOS R6 and many more RF lenses that I would love to test and review, sharing with fellow photographers on Canon full-frame mirrorless photography through my Canon EOS RP Explorer Series Production.

Canon full-frame mirrorless cameras journey has now transformed even further, setting a new standard for the full-frame mirrorless cameras industry.

Born to Rule, the Canon EOS R5 has and will, leading the way for new full-frame mirrorless camera industry standards.

“With the seamless integration of camera and lens technology in the EOS R platform, we are able to design and produce new concept lenses that were not possible before. The compact and lightweight super telephoto lenses, and the portrait lens that comes with a half macro feature are all designed to be affordable. These lenses will open up a whole new world of photography for our EOS R users,” said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore.

The RF85mm f/2 IS STM offers more flexibility with its ability to shoot both portraits and macro, while the RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM offers super telephoto focal lengths of 600mm and 800m respectively at an affordable price.

Lightweight, compact and affordable super telephoto lenses

Telephoto lenses are usually associated with big aperture prime lenses and they can be pretty expensive, big and heavy in weight. The RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM lenses are going to change this mindset, designed to lower the barriers of entry for photographers to own super telephoto lenses by making them more affordable, compact and lightweight.

By working together with the DIGIC X image processor and high-performance CMOS sensor in the EOS R series cameras, the RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM are capable of delivering high image quality even at high ISO settings despite their affordable price. All made possible with the RF mount technology that made lenses previously impossible to design possible now. Utilising a single DO (Diffractive optical element) lens instead of the traditional use of multiple lens elements at the front of the RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM has contributed to the lighter lens weight. The single DO lens not only has the optical characteristics of multiple lenses but is able to produce high image quality with reduced chromatic aberration.

High-strength plastics are used for the main construction of both lenses, contributing further to the lightweight design whereas metal parts are used on parts like the lens mount and tripod ring where strength is crucial. The fixed f/11 apertures of both lenses, which omits the need for an aperture adjustment mechanism, also helps reduce the weight. The incredible reduction in weight of the two super telephoto lenses make them possible for handheld use. In fact, the RF600mm f/11 IS STM is approx. 30% of the weight of the much bigger and heavier EF600mm f/4L IS III USM lens. Similarly, the RF800mm f/11 IS STM is approx. 28% of the weight of the EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM lens.

On top of the significant weight reduction, both lenses have a retractable structure which makes them a lot more portable. Users can easily stow the lens away without having to get a dedicated bag just for the lens. The lens barrel can be extended when shooting, while retracting can be done by rotating the lock ring on the mount before storing the lens away.

When retracted, the RF600mm f/11 IS STM is 45% of the length of the EF600mm f/4L IS III USM lens. Meanwhile, the RF800mm f/11 IS STM is 61% of the length of the EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM lens when retracted. With the significant downsize, it makes transportation and storage of these lenses a breeze.

The RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM are also compatible with the new Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x for RF lenses, making it possible to achieve a maximum reach of 1600mm (when RF800mm f/11 IS STM is paired with Extender RF 2x).

Image Stabiliser (IS) function to assist in handheld shooting

The RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM are equipped with Canon’s Optical Image Stabiliser feature. The RF600mm f/11 IS STM achieves an image stabilisation (IS) effect of up to 5 stops (based on CIPA standard) and the RF800mm f/11 IS STM achieves an IS effect of 4 stops (based on CIPA standard). The IS function significantly reduces camera shake, which is particularly noticeable in super telephoto shooting and helps to stabilise the image, making it effective to control focus.

Stunning portraits and creative possibilities with macro function

The EF85mm f/1.8 lens has been one of Canon’s best-selling EF lens line up, and the RF85mm f/2 IS STM continues that legacy with its large f/2 aperture, with macro function and Hybrid Image Stabilisation for added performance. The 85mm focal length is ideal for portraits while the large f/2 aperture results in dreamy bokeh and low light shooting capabilities.

With a minimum shooting distance of 0.35m and the ability to achieve 0.5x magnification, the RF85mm f/2 IS STM opens up more opportunities for more creative and unique images. This comes in especially useful for wedding photographers who wants a portrait lens that could double up to shoot details of rings and decorations.

When the RF85mm f/2 IS STM is used with the EOS R5, up to 8 stops of image stabilisation can be achieved in tandem with the In-Body Image Stabiliser. This feature greatly expands the possibilities of expression especially when a tripod is not available or cannot be used.

Pricing and Availability

The RF600mm f/11 IS STM will be available at $1,169 while the RF800mm f/11 IS STM will be available for $1,509. Both lenses will be available for sale from 30 July 2020.

The price and availability of the RF85mm f/2 IS STM will be confirmed at a later date.

Canon recently announced the first super-telephoto L zoom lens for the EOS R series full frame mirrorless camera, the Canon RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM. This new super-telephoto L zoom lens was announced together along with the Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 full-frame mirrorless cameras. The introduction of the first super-telephoto L zoom lens showcases Canon’s commitment to the EOS R series and RF mount lenses and I am looking forward to more RF lenses being announced in the near future.

The RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM is designed for professionals and advanced amateur photographers, for Canon photographers who are familiar with this popular EF lens, the EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM lens, this is the RF version equivalent, versatile and with a wide focal length range, ideal for photography genres such as sports, wildlife, nature photography and photojournalism as well.

“As the evolution of the popular EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens, the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM serves to strengthen the R and RF lineup by adding native super telephoto capabilities. Its increased range and compatibility with the Extender RF 1.4x, and Extender RF 2x, as well as the new cameras makes it extremely versatile and will surely excite photographers,” said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore.

Extra Reach in a Lightweight Package

The RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM is similar in size to the EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM lens, however, it’s 15% lighter in weight and has an additional 100mm reach. From the 100mm to 500mm focal length range, photographers can enjoy 5x zoom ratio, covering medium telephoto (100mm) to super telephoto range (500mm).

The lens’ large diameter RF mount allows for a short lens back focus, and the six UD lenses and one super UD lens within the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM are arranged near the focal plane surface. The ASC (Air Sphere Coating) on the lens elements is also used to reduce ghosting. All this work together to correct optical aberrations and deliver images that are sharp from edge to edge regardless of which focal length a user shoots at.

The RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM’s well-engineered dust and drip-resistant construction lets it perform at its best even in demanding situations. The lens’ heat-shield white paint suppresses heat from building up within the barrel of the lens, maintaining image quality even when shooting under the hot sun.

Sharper Images even at slower shutter speeds with In-Lens Image Stabiliser (IS)

The RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM has Canon’s unique Optical Image Stabiliser mechanism, giving photographers image stabilisation up to five shutter speed stops by revising the control algorithm of the optical IS and using Dual Sensing IS.

There are three IS modes on this lens, through the mode selection switch, photographers can toggle between these three modes, based on the movements of the subjects that they are shooting:

IS mode 1 is best suited for stationary subjects

IS mode 2 is used for panning shots

IS mode 3 is suitable for subjects with irregular movements, such as during basketball where movements of players can be unpredictable

The latest Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 cameras, both camera bodies possess in-body 5-axis image stabilisation, when either camera is used with the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens, an IS effectiveness of six stops is achieved (based on CIPA testing standards) at 500mm focal length.

This is achieved through the coordinated controls between the camera’s and lens’ IS. Motion blur is reduced and users get sharper images even while shooting at 500mm focal length. Users can shoot at lower shutter speed in dim situations to achieve brighter shots, expanding the possibilities for handheld shooting.

Shoot Faster and Closer

The RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens is equipped with two Nano Ultrasonic Motors (USM) providing faster Auto Focus (AF), achieving high-speed, high-precision still image AF and smooth movie AF in combination with the EOS R series Dual Pixel CMOS AF. By using two Nano USMs to drive the lens, power saving and high-speed operation is achieved without compromising the size.

The RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM‘s unique electronic floating focus control has also made focusing at a mere 0.9m possible and the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM is capable of achieving 0.33x magnification on the 500mm focal length (focusing distance of 1.2m) allowing users to focus on close-up objects with ease. With such a short focusing distance and large magnification, users now have more room for creativity in their photography.

Extenders RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x

Canon also introduced two new dedicated Extenders, the Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x. Both of them are compatible with RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM, RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM, photographers can photograph at 1000mm on RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM and up to 1600mm on the RF800mm f/11 IS STM without compromising on image quality.

The Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x both achieve high image quality and a smaller size with an optical design that utilises the large diameter mount and short back focus unique to the RF mounts. The total length of the new extenders (length from the mount on the body side to the mount on the lens side) has been reduced by 25% compared to the Extender EF 1.4xIII and Extender EF 2xIII. The extenders utilise the latest high-refractive-power, low-dispersion glass material to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations. The three cemented lens elements with special coating in the Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x help reduce the air contact surface as much as possible, effectively reducing ghosting that tends to occur with extenders.

Both extenders inherit the heat-shielding white paint from telephoto L lenses. Designed with built-in microprocessors, the extenders also allow for better communications between the lens and camera to achieve the same high precision AF as though the user is shooting without an extender.

The vibration and impact resistant structure along with the dust and drip-resistant construction of both extenders are designed to be reliable and durable for professional and advanced amateur users.

Pricing and Availability

The pricing and availability of the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM, will be confirmed at a later date. Both the Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x will be available from 30 July 2020, for $829 and $1,000, respectively.

It’s finally official! Canon announced EOS R5 and EOS R6, two brand new full-frame mirrorless cameras. For the Canon EOS R5, I had been following with great interest since February 2020 when Canon first announced that they are currently developing the Canon EOS R5 and new RF lenses, followed by another announcement in April 2020, unveiling new features of Canon EOS R5, a sneak preview. In between those times, there wasn’t much news on Canon EOS R6 except for the rumours flying around the internet and social media.

For this article, I would be sharing information and details of the two brand new full-frame mirrorless cameras, EOS R5 and EOS R6. As for more personal views and thoughts on those two new EOS R full-frame mirrorless cameras, I would publish it at a later date. With my coverage of Canon’s EOS cameras and lenses over the years, along with my own personal photography coverage from Canon’s first mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS M, to the EOS R5 and EOS R6 of today, this article would be too lengthy and heavy in content, thus it would be best that I split into two parts.

Now, let me bring you into the new world of the Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 full-frame mirrorless cameras.

Born to rule, the Canon EOS R5, a highly capable camera with high quality resolution, high speed shooting, equipped with a new and improved AF system, in-body IS, a game changer for both stills photography and videography, with dual card slots. Partnering together with fellow Canon EOS R6 that was launched together with EOS R5, these two brand new full-frame mirrorless cameras are setting new standards and directions in the full-frame mirrorless camera market.

“The EOS R5 and EOS R6 will definitely surpass our advance and professional users’ expectations with their suite of features and technologies. In fact, the EOS R5 is not only Canon’s best mirrorless camera to date, but also one that is more than qualified as a filmmaking camera. With its fast burst shooting speed, 5-axis in-body image stabilization and ability to record 8k videos with its full-frame sensor, the EOS R5 will truly be an exciting product for our users,” said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore.

New Generation Image Sensor – Unparalleled Imaging Performance

The EOS R5 is equipped with a 45-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, close to medium-format resolution, this would meet the high demands of professional photographers. From large format commercial printing to capturing intricate details in landscape photography, including intensive cropping frequently required in wildlife photography, the EOS R5 is up to the task and can do them all.

They are powered by the new DIGIC X image processor that debuted in Canon’s flagship EOS-1DX Mark III. The electronic shutter in both the EOS R5 and EOS R6 is capable of continuous shooting up to 20fps at full resolution, even with AF and AE tracking. The mechanical shutter is able at a continuous speed 12fps as well, putting both cameras among the fastest full-frame mirrorless cameras in the market.

The new DIGIC X imaging processor has also vastly improved in its noise handling capabilities. Even though the EOS R5 has 45 million pixels, its native ISO can go up to an incredible 51,200, with an option to expand up to 102,400. Despite having 50% more pixels as compared to the EOS R, the EOS R5 performs better in the ISO department.

As for the EOS R6, it is equipped with a 20-megapixel full-frame sensor, that is inherited from Canon’s flagship EOS-1DX Mark III. Sharing the same image sensor and image processor as the EOS-1DX Mark III, the EOS R6 is capable of achieving a native ISO of up to 102,400 (expandable to 204,800).

Enhanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF – Face and Animal Detection AF

Canon Dual Pixel CMOS AF has been around for a few years, this technology has been a key component behind Canon’s core Auto Focus (AF) technology that are inside Canon’s best cameras. It’s designed to provide smooth, high-performance focus tracking in movies and fast AF acquisition when shooting still photography. This technology makes capturing a moving subject and retaining sharp focus easy.

For the EOS R5 and EOS R6, this proprietary technology by Canon has been upgraded to the next generation by enhancing the image-reading speed of the CMOS sensor. The Dual Pixel CMOS AF II combined with the very fast processing speed of the new DIGIC X imaging processor has brought about several major improvements in AF capability.

For the first time ever in the EOS lineup, the AF coverage area has been expanded to cover the entire sensor (100% x 100%). This means focusing is available on any part of the frame, that would make focusing on subjects at the far edges a breeze.

As compared to the EOS R, the number of AF points for both EOS R5 and EOS R6 during automatic selection has increased sevenfold, to an impressive 1,053 points. Manually selectable AF positions on the EOS R5 is 5,940 while the EOS R6 has 6,072, which is 1.5x more than the EOS-1DX Mark III. This is a significant increase, thus improving the the accuracy in AF tracking dramatically.

Face Tracking with Eye Detection AF was first made available in the EOS R and EOS RP cameras. Now with the new Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, both EOS R5 and EOS R6 can enable AF Priority mode for either people or animals. In addition, the camera is able to recognise not just the body, but also the head and eyes of the subjects as well. All these advancements in AF would definitely be Delighting You (us photographers!) Always, in demanding photography genres such as sports and bird photography, helping and benefitting them tremendously.

In low light situations, do not fret. Never miss a moment even in a dimly lit situation with EOS R5’s low luminance AF sensitivity of EV -6 and EOS R6 at EV -6.5, a condition so dark that human eye would even find it difficult to see.

In-Body Image Stabiliser and Dual Card Slots

These two features are here, inside both EOS R5 and EOS R6 camera bodies, another first for the Canon’s EOS series cameras. They both incorporate a 5-axis camera-shake blur correction In-Body Image Stabiliser (In-Body IS) function. When they are used in tandem with an Optical Image Stabiliser (Optical IS) equipped RF lens, or even RF lenses that do not have IS, the camera-shake reduction is as effective up to 8-stops decrease in shutter speed. For Canon photographers using EF lenses that do not have Optical IS, they can also gain image stabilisation as well.

Both cameras use a new algorithm, made possible by the new imaging engine DIGIC X, to process gyro signal data and achieve higher image stabilisation effects. Coordinated control utilises the image stabilisation mechanisms of both the camera and lens, simultaneously. This coordinated control results in an optimised stabilisation across the entire zoom range, from wide-angle to telephoto, depending on the lens in use.

With this In-Body IS capability, photographers can shoot handheld of a 2 seconds exposure using RF lens with 100mm focal length, and get a sharp image with fluid water motion, without using a tripod.

Inside the compact size camera body, the EOS R5 has two card slots, one is a CFexpress, the other is a SD memory card. The CFexpress card supports high-speed transfer, allowing the camera to perform continuous shooting of 45-megapixel still images, at up to 20 fps, as well as internal recording of 8K RAW movies (without additional recording equipment). The EOS R6 has two card slots that accommodate both SD memory cards.

In-camera 8K video recording – Sharper and more colour-accurate videos

The EOS R5 can shoot in 8K, thanks to the incredible processing power of the DIGIC X combined with the ultra-fast CFexpress media, enabling the EOS R5 to record 8K movies at a smooth 30fps with full sensor readout. Shooting in 8K gives users the flexibility in cropping during post-production even for 4K delivery, allowing more creative expression through zooming or panning.

In addition, there is an option to record 8K RAW movies internally without any external accessories. The EOS R5 is able to record up to 120fps in 4K as well, a feature that is highly sought after in the industry. The EOS R5 is able to record in a variety of formats, including RAW, H.265 HEVC and H.264 MP4 in either ALL-I or IPB compression.

As for the EOS R6, it is able to shoot in 4K videos up to 60fps, and slow motion at 120fps in Full HD, all without crop, similar to the EOS R5.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF will be available for both EOS R5 and EOS R6 in all resolutions and formats. With all the above video features, making both cameras great tools for video makers and hybrid shooters.

External monitoring and recording are available via HDMI port at up to 4K 60fps with 10 bit, 4:2:2 for both cameras. For HDR shooting, both cameras have PQ and Canon log features that allow users flexibility in recording and grading for HDR content.

Advanced Wireless Features – Seamless Connectivity

The Canon EOS R5 currently has the most advanced wireless feature in any Canon cameras to date. It has native support for 5GHz and 2.4GHz wireless LAN without the need for any additional accessory, a first for a Canon camera. FTP and FTPS data transfer are supported as well.

With all these connectivity features, photographers can easily transfer image data from the camera to a smart device, PC or even FTP server. If the user requires even faster speeds, or SFTP with secured LAN, this optional accessory WFT-R10 is available. It comes with 2×2 MIMO and wired LAN for faster and more stable connections.

As for the EOS R6, it supports only the 2.4GHz band but retains FTP and FTPS functionality.

Both EOS R5 and EOS R6 support Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and they are the first to work fully with the new image.canon cloud platform. Once configured and with a Wi-Fi connection established, the camera can automatically upload image and video files and store them in the image.canon cloud for up to 30 days with no limit in size. This includes original RAW files and 8K movies as well. Users can even configure image.canon to automatically transfer original image data to various cloud platforms such as Google Photos, Google Drive or Adobe Creative Cloud.

Intuitive to Handle, Built to Last

Both the EOS R5 and EOS R6 have a magnesium alloy body, dust and drip-proof construction. They are lightweight, it also prevent dust and water droplets from entering the camera body as well.

On the topic of shutter durability, the EOS R5 has the same shutter durability as the EOS-1DX Mark III at 500,000 cycles, while the EOS R6 has 300,000 cycles shutter durability. A point to take not is that, the shutter curtain of both EOS R5 and EOS R6 can be configured to either close or remain open when power is off. This is an extremely useful feature as it can prevent dust from entering the sensor chamber when photographers change their lens.

The EOS R5 has a top LCD panel while the EOS R6 has a Mode Dial. Canon photographers who are experienced and used to the EOS 5D series would greatly welcome the popular Multi-controller and Quick Control Dial that are available on both models. This combination allows quicker selection of AF points and change of settings on both cameras.

Both EOS R5 and EOS R6 are designed with the Vari-angle LCD with full touch screen convenience during AF and menu selections. The EOS R5 sports a 0.5-inch hi-res Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) with 5.76m dots, which is 1.5 times more than the resolution of EOS R’s EVF. The EOS R6 has a 3.69m dot EVF.

Display refresh rate of the EVF is now at 119.88 / 59.94fps for both cameras, which is twice of the EOS R. The smooth display makes tracking of moving subjects much easier. A new LP-E6NH battery has been created for both cameras, which has 15% higher capacity than LP-E6N, which lets users shoot for longer. Both cameras are compatible with existing LP-E6N and LP-E6 batteries. The BG-R10 battery grip (sold separately) is an optional accessory equipped with Multi-controller, designed for shooting in vertical orientation. The BG-R10 makes portrait photography easier and has a dust and drip resistant design which matches both cameras. It accommodates two battery units (LP-E6NH, LP-E6N, or LP-E6 batteries), allowing users to continue shooting for even longer periods with less concern about the remaining battery power. When combined with the PD-E1 adapter (sold separately), it is also possible to recharge batteries or supply power to the camera via USB cable.

A few months back in February 2020, Canon announced that they were developing the Canon EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera and new RF lenses. That news announcement attracted a lot of attention with the technical specifications and capabilities of the upcoming Canon EOS R5. Fast forward to today on 21st April 2020, Canon unveils new features of Canon EOS R5!

What are the new features of Canon EOS R5? What makes Canon EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera that highly anticipated by the world photography community? From my coverage, following, testing, reviewing (and owning the Canon EOS RP) over the years from the first Canon mirrorless Canon EOS M to Canon EOS RP, I am able to continue with a part two of this article that I wrote and published “The Canon Mirrorless Journey from Canon EOS M to EOS R” when Canon EOS R5 is officially announced. The improvements starting from Canon EOS R5 are significant and important, the information that I gathered from Canon EXPO 2016 Shanghai, shows the commitment (to mirrorless system), imaging and technological improvements that you can have inside the upcoming Canon EOS R5.

Let me share with you, the new features of the Canon EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera

Canon revealed new features and functions of the highly anticipated Canon EOS R5, engineered with the revolutionary RF mount and fitted with Canon’s latest technologies. The EOS R5 is the first of the next-generation full-frame mirrorless cameras in Canon’s EOS R System.

Video

The Canon EOS R5 comes with groundbreaking specifications in the video department. The compact body houses the ability to shoot 8K videos internally at up to 30fps with full sensor width read out (without crop). This allows flexibility in post-processing or editing as you have access to four times the resolution of 4K—being able to crop in or pan within the frame and still deliver in 4K or FHD output. The camera also has the impressive ability of shooting 4K at up to 120fps, both internally and externally. For recordings in both 8K and 4K, 10-bit YCbCr 4:2:2 internal recording with Canon Log is supported.

With the RAW movie feature first made available on the EOS-1DX Mark III in late 2019, the EOS R5 raises the bar further to include internal 8K RAW movie recording at up to 30fps with full sensor width read out. Moreover, the Dual Pixel CMOS AF will be available in every video resolution available in the EOS R5—including the RAW movie mode.

Improved AF

The EOS R5 also comes with an improved AF algorithm, capable of detecting the body, face and eyes of animal subjects such as dogs, cats and even birds. The Animal Detection AF in the EOS R5 is capable of detecting erratic movements, enabling users to shoot a variety of fast-moving subjects with greater ease.

5-Axis IBIS

The EOS R5 will also feature a 5-axis in-body image stabilisation system (IBIS) which works in tandem with the Image Stabilization in Canon lenses to effectively reduce camera-shake blur. Users can now master challenging handheld shots when using telephoto lenses or shooting in dimly-lit conditions.

Dual card slots

All these impressive functions are packed into a compact body, which is designed with two card slots – CFexpress card and SD memory card. The ultra-high transfer speeds of the CFexpress card is one of the key reasons for the camera’s ability to perform continuous shooting at up to 20fps and internal recordings of 8K RAW movies.

Personal thoughts and views

The Canon EOS R5 would be making her official debut soon, I reckon photographers would be getting more excited with the Canon EOS R5, how would this camera fits into their lineup, some might be ready to get the Canon EOS R5, the Canon full-frame mirrorless camera that can cover both stills and videos in both personal and professional capacity.

With the development of more RF lenses on Canon’s imaging solutions roadmap, the Canon EOS R and RF lenses system are now very close to a full-fledged full-frame mirrorless photography ecosystem, moreover photographers can also tap on the EF lenses system and other Canon accessories too.

The Canon EOS R5 is packed with very good technical specifications and capabilities, for both stills and video. How would this fit into my Canon photography setup? This is a developing story, it’s exciting and opening up more options for my Canon photography.

On 13th February 2020, Canon announced the launch of a few photography products and services. The big header attraction was the announcement of the development of the Canon EOS R5 and new RF lenses on the horizon for the year 2020, launch of the Canon EOS 850D, SELPHY QX10 Pocket Photo Printer and lastly, Canon launched image.canon – new cloud platform.

A platform that would be very useful in my personal opinion. 5G networks and technology are in place and we should see them being fully implemented around the world in maybe one to two years time. Having covered 5G technology news and developments on my technology and business portal/blog, the ease, speed and low latency of 5G networks would be most useful for photographers to upload into the cloud platform, ensuring a speedy delivery of photographs to their backend/offices/digital editors/clients and even to back up their photography works immediately on their cloud platform. Photographers specialising in the following genres such as press, photojournalists, sports, commercial etc would find image.canon platform very useful in the 5G networks era.

This is a new camera cloud platform for photographers to connect their Canon cameras with users’ PCs, smartphones and external web services. This new cloud platform is set to commence operation on 14 April 2020 (1), his will enhance the post-photography workflow and give photographers a new way to enjoy the photography experience and the joy of photography.

The cloud platform image.canon is based on the concept of a “connected camera” linked to the cloud, enabling photographers to automatically (2) upload images and videos (3) in their original quality straight from their cameras that are equipped with automatic image transfer functionality via Wi-Fi. The Canon EOS R5 that is currently under development is one example of such cameras.

How does image.canon works?

This image.canon makes possible the transfer of image files to connected PCs, smartphones and external web services. The service provides new ways to enjoy photography and caters to a wide range of photographers seeking to improve their post-shoot workflows. This includes professionals who want to enhance their creative process, enthusiasts who want to streamline image editing and entry-level users who want to enjoy casual photography and share their images on social media.

Future Canon cameras equipped with automatic image transfer functionality will store uploaded images and videos files for up to 30 days (4). After the 30-day period, users can opt to continue storing the uncompressed data by migrating it to a 10 GB long-term storage account (5).

From its launch at the start on 14 April 2020, the image.canon service will make possible the automatic transfer of images to users’ accounts on such services as Google Drive. Starting from June, image.canon will expand both its partnership with Google to include original quality backup with Google Photos via Google One, a membership plan for expanded storage, and its partnership with Adobe Creative Cloud (membership plan). In addition to automatic transfer of images and the ability to edit images in their original quality on partnered services and applications, image.canon will make it easier for users to store and share their images.

As AI and 5G technologies are implemented, Canon will continue to propose new ways to capture images and enjoy photography by enabling cameras to communicate in both directions, such as remote, real-time editing of photos and videos captured at outdoor events, cloud-based RAW image data editing and capture assistance tailored to users’ preferences.

* Information and picture courtesy of Canon Singapore and Ogilvy *

Notes:

(1) The CANON iMAGE GATEWAY Online Album Service will end operation on March 31, 2020, and image.canon will be a successor to the service. From the beginning of the data migration period on April 14, 2020 until its completion, users will not be able to access any image files or albums already uploaded to the service.

(2) All Canon cameras released before the EOS R5 will, at minimum, support manual file transfer. Manual file transfer will be enabled from the start of the new service on 14 April 2020. Automatic file transferring, available for cameras equipped with the automatic file transfer function, beginning with the currently-in-development EOS R5, requires users to connect the camera to a Wi-Fi access point that has been registered in advance.

(3) Original images are stored for 30 days from upload. There will be no capacity restrictions in general, however due to operational reasons to provide the service, there may be cases to restrict uploads.

(4) When uploading an original image file, a thumbnail file (up to dimensions of 2048 pixels) will be automatically generated and stored. Thumbnail files can still be viewed on image.canon at any time, even after expiration of the 30-day period following the original upload.

(5) Any file, including thumbnails, which the user does not access via image.canon for an entire 1-year period will be deleted from the service.

On 13th February 2020, Canon announced that they are currently developing the Canon EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera and new RF lenses are coming soon too! Prior to this official announcement, there were a number of rumours reported online on this new Canon full-frame mirrorless camera and it’s great to officially know about them!

Upon reading the brief description of the Canon EOS R5 that is currently being developed, I am really excited. I have (followed, documented, reviewed, used, sold, bought) Canon’s mirrorless journey from EOS M to EOS R, from using the EOS M (my parents camera), sold it off and we changed to the Canon EOS RP. The development of Canon EOS R5 reinforces Canon’s statement and commitment to the full-frame mirrorless camera segment. From the time when I attended Canon EXPO Shanghai 2016, I published “The Next Wave and Trends”, they have come a long way since then with their mirrorless cameras segment.

When the Canon EOS R5 is officially released along with 9 more RF lenses in 2020, I can start on part 2 of my continuation of Canon’s mirrorless journey, EOS R family and RF lenses. the Canon EOS R5 could be the game changer in the full-frame mirrorless camera market. They fulfil the requirements/desires that photographers wish/want inside their camera. Although I did speak about/debate whether IBIS is a must have in my previous articles, if it’s packed inside the Canon EOS R5, I am happy too!

What can we expect from the upcoming Canon EOS R5? Let me share with you more information below:

Canon EOS R5

The new full-frame mirrorless camera currently under development will fully leverage the advantages of the EOS R System to realise high-speed continuous shooting, 8K video recording and expanding the boundaries of visual expression. In addition, it can contribute to more efficient workflows thanks to improved transmission functionality, operability and reliability. These enhancements and more will help the new camera elevate the EOS Series concept of “Speed, Comfort and High image-quality” to a higher level.

Canon’s EOS R5, the first of the next-generation full-frame mirrorless cameras in the company’s EOS R System, will include a newly developed CMOS sensor that makes possible advanced features such as high-speed continuous shooting – up to approximately 20 frames per second (fps) using an electronic shutter and up to approximately 12 fps using a mechanical shutter – to facilitate shooting of athletes at sporting events and other fast moving subjects. In addition, the camera’s 8K video capture capability will enable users to extract high-resolution still images from video footage as well as process 8K video into higher-quality 4K videos, opening up new possibilities for visual expression. What’s more, the EOS R5 will be the first Canon camera equipped with a high-performance coordinated Image Stabilization (IS) system that integrates the camera’s in-body IS with IS systems on attached RF lenses. The camera will also feature dual media card slots and support automatic transfers of image files from the device to the image.canon cloud platform.

From Canon Marketing Japan YouTube video above, the Canon EOS R5 looks really solid and impressive, the built, aesthetics and design, looks really close to the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.

Tokyo 2020 Olympics will begin on 24th July 2020, my personal view/prediction is that the Canon EOS R5 would make their debut and appearance during this international sporting event in Tokyo, Japan (about 5 months from the announcement today on 13th February 2020)

9 x RF Lenses on the horizon in Year 2020

Canon is also developing a total of 9 RF lenses scheduled for release during 2020, including the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM, Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x.

As more RF lenses are introduced into their lineup, this would be good news for photographers who wish to invest/switch into the EOS R and RF lenses setup. What are the lenses on your wish list that you would like to be on the RF lenses setup? Maybe the RF 135mm, RF 100mm Macro, RF 24mm? Just some of my own predictions here!

With the introduction of the Extender RF 1.4x and 2x, this to me is an indication of the big RF prime lenses to come, maybe the RF 300mm f/2.8L, RF 400mm f/2.8L ? Or the RF 500mm and RF 600mm? I am making my own predictions here!

RF24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM

A new RF lens being added to their RF family of lenses, five stops IS capabilities, giving photographers more affordable RF lenses options without compromising image quality. The small and lightest RF zoom lens available to date, weighing only 395g and 88.8mm in length. They are reasonably priced and available as a kit lens for EOS RP and EOS R.

The Canon EOS R5, RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM, Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x will be on display in the Canon booth at the CP+ Camera and Photo Imaging Show 2020, to be held from 27 February to 1 March at the Pacifico Yokohama convention hall in Yokohama, Japan.

At this point in time, I am really excited, the Canon EOS R5 might just be the camera that I am looking at, to slot into my current setup, in between my Canon EOS-1DX Mark II and Canon EOS RP. My initial plan is a Canon EOS 5D Mark III or EOS 5D Mark IV, I didn’t go ahead as I am waiting for Canon to announce the high end EOS R model before deciding, with the announcement of the Canon EOS R5, it seems that it has now come true!

Would the Canon EOS R5 eventually come into my setup? Maybe yes! There are also now more RF lenses arriving soon for photographers to build up their system.
