What is #Metazomia all about? 

What is #Metazomia all about? This word comes from two things, the Metaverse and a metaphorical highland region in Southeast Asia. #Metazomia is a whimsical 360° immersive cinematic experience created by award-winning artist Brian Gothong Tan. 

Created from artificial intelligence and inspired by the adventures of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, Tan’s cinematic experience looks at what the future may hold. The result: an epic melding of generative art and motion graphics that invite visitors to surrender to the meditative quality of the images.

There are a few different types of artistic mediums/forms, you can choose to absorb everything on offer, or be selective, or none at all, if you decide to do so. I would like to suggest and encourage you to go up close and personal with all different artworks on display.

The Metaverse might still be a whole new strange world for many of us, how can we connect a virtual world with the real world? How is it even possible, what would the Metaverse world be really like?

Connecting with #Metazomia by Brian Gothong Tan, brings you into the Metaverse via a mix of arts form and different mediums. We might not have all the answers to the questions, none of us have the answers as the #Metaverse is still evolving, exploring and transforming.   

There is something at #Metazomia that connected with me deeply, on the subject of AI (Artificial Intelligence) on the arts and creatives sectors. This topic is on my personal projects list for Year 2023 (from both photographer and technology writer perspectives). 

Chatting with Brian on the topic of AI was enlightening and mind-opening, AI is not going to go away, it would probably gain more traction in our daily work and living. Some artists, photographers, creatives are afraid, we can understand. In a nutshell, it’s all about embracing AI not fearing AI, and how you can adopt, adapt and incorporate them in your artistic and creative workflows.

Canon DP-V2730 4K Professional Display

Canon recently launched the DP-V2730 4K Professional Display. This new 27-inch display features improved basic image quality over its predecessor models (1), including core components such as high-image quality display engine, revamped high-resolution algorithms, panels and backlighting systems.

The display features a compact and lightweight body that is ideal for 4K video checking and editing not only in conventional video production environments, but also for remote work in confined spaces including offices and personal residences. Like the highly popular DP-V1830 18-inch display (released in February 2022), the DP-V2730 satisfies HDR standards (2) and delivers high image quality, thus supporting a diverse range of working styles and workflows in the broadcast and video production industries. 

Utilising proprietary Canon technology, the DP-V2730 realises a maximum illuminance of 1,000 cd/m2 for white luminance, as well as improved black luminance and high contrast, making the display more suitable for checking dark or high-contrast areas. In addition, the display faithfully recreates the wide color gamut required by the ITU-R BT.2020 (3) recommendations. What’s more, thanks to Canon’s proprietary optical configuration that helps mitigate luminance and color variations, the angle of view for the display is wide enough to deliver accurate images when several people are viewing the monitor at the same time. 

Compared with the 24-inch DP-V2421, the new 27-inch DP-V2730 realises a 1.3x larger screen size for greater visibility, while also realising a slim design (4) with an approximately 41mm narrower width, enabling use in narrow workplaces such as broadcast relay vehicles and sub-control rooms. What’s more, the display’s smaller size, compared with 30-32-inch displays used for such work as color grading, makes it ideal for video production and a wider range of editing work styles in enviroments such as offices and personal residences where space is limited. 

The new display is equipped with the highly praised HDR Monitoring Assist function of its predecessor models. This function enables users to check input video and various types of signal information, all on a single display, to visualise important information and enable more efficient video checking and editing work. In addition, a multi-screen display (5) function via the SDI/HDMI video input and a Switchout (6) function help reduce the number of devices required and thereby realising a more space efficient video capture and production workplace. 

The DP-V2730 will be available from late February 2023.

Canon EU-V3 – Functional Expansion Unit

Canon recently announced the launch of the EU-V3, a functional expansion unit for the EOS C500 Mark II (released in December 2019) and the EOS C300 Mark III (released in June 2020) models of Canon digital cinema cameras.

 In recent years, there has been a growing need to accommodate a preference for shallow depth of field and smooth background blur in the recording of concerts and other live events. In response to this trend, Canon has announced the EU-V3, an external functional expansion unit for its EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III. Designed for video production at live events, the expansion unit increases the operational capability of these two cameras which has earned high praise for their large-format sensor that enables rich videographic expression. 

By attaching the EU-V3 to either the EOS C500 Mark II or EOS C300 Mark III, the cameras gain additional input/output terminals necessary for live video production. Specialized features for live broadcasting include a “tally” function that indicates which camera the live video is being captured with, and a “return” function that notifies operators which camera is currently broadcasting live. In addition, the unit supports the “focus position guide” function that enables operators to register a desired focus position and display the current focus position on-screen. This makes fast-focusing possible during live productions without missing a single moment. 

Use of the EU-V3 attachment with the EOS C500 Mark II or EOS C300 Mark III requires  installation of firmware, which Canon will provide free of charge in mid October 2022. By installing this firmware, the cameras will gain support for Canon’s proprietary IP1, XC Protocol, thus enabling control of cameras via a network. In addition, the firmware update will provide support for the CN8 x 15 IAS S/E1 and CN8 x 15 IAS S/P1 EF Cinema lenses, as well as 4ch audio parameter display and other functionality. 

The EU-V3 will be available in late 2022.

Canon 4K XA Series Professional Video Cameras

Canon’s XA Series professional-use camcorders, the compact and lightweight XA65 (1) /XA60, and the high-image-quality XA75 (1) /XA70, deliver the high image quality and high mobility required for on-location videography in fields such as broadcasting, reporting, documentary, and event shooting.

The newly announced XA75 and XA70 models inherit the same high performance of their predecessor models (2), while adding new support for UVC (USB Video Class) communication protocol that enables video transfer via USB connection. With this new feature, the cameras are better suited for use in the increasingly popular field of livestreaming, for video shooting and content creation. 

XA75 and XA70

The XA75 and XA70 are equipped with a 1-inch CMOS sensor and a DIGIC DV 6 image processor. Featuring a 4K-compatible 15x optical zoom lens with a zoom range from approximately 25.5mm at the wide end to approximately 382.5mm at the telephoto end (3), both support high-quality 4K/30p video capture across the entire zoom range.

The large sensor enables capture of video footage with exquisite background blur and bright, high-sensitivity recording with minimal noise in low-light environments. What’s more, thanks to Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, the XA75/XA70 achieves smooth, high-performance autofocus and subject tracking during shooting. Even during 4K shooting, when precision is crucial, intuitive touch panel operations enable quick and accurate focusing. 

XA65 and XA60

The XA65 and XA60 are equipped with a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor and a DIGIC DV 6 image processor, along with a 4K-compatible 20x optical zoom lens, all in a compact and lightweight body measuring approximately 109 mm (W) x 84 mm (H) x 182 mm (D) and weighing approximately 750g (4). The camera supports 4K/30p image capture across the entire zoom range—from approximately 29.3mm at the wide end to approximately 601mm at the telephoto end (3). What’s more, data from the 4K sensor can also be utilized for Over Sampling HD Processing to record high-resolution Full-HD/60p video. 

These new cameras are the first in Canon’s XA series to feature UVC compatibility, which allows high-image-quality streaming with just a single USB (Type-C) cable. In addition, the cameras are equipped with a large and bright electrostatic capacitance-type LCD touchscreen monitor, measuring 3.5 inches and 2.76 million dots, as well as a 0.36-inch, 1.77 million dots tilted Electronic View Finder (EVF) for improved visibility during outdoor shooting. What’s more, there is a digital zoom function for greater zoom range and a “text overlay” On-Screen Display (OSD) function that displays information such as date and timecodes overlaid on captured visuals, for greater flexibility in all kinds of shooting scenarios.

New Canon Cine-Servo Lens

Canon announced the launch of the CN8 x 15 IAS S/E1 (EF mount) and CN8 x 15 IAS S/P1 (PL mount), they are the latest additions to Canon’s CINE-SERVO series (1) of EF Cinema lenses.

The new Canon Cine-Servo lens feature high optical performance that supports use with 8K cameras equipped with large-format sensors, the new EF Cinema lenses realize a focal length of 15mm at the wide-angle end, 8x optical zoom and a built-in 1.5x extender.

The lenses inherit the characteristics that have made the Cine-Servo series popular among users, while meeting demand for a wider focal length. In addition to the rich visual expression only possible with large-format sensors, the lenses realize a compact and lightweight design for shoulder-mounted operation, and is also standard-equipped with a removable drive unit.

Thanks to its ability to cover a wide range of focal lengths while also supporting both cinema-level image quality and broadcast-style video production, these versatile new lenses can be used in scenarios such as TV and commercial filming, live studio production, sports broadcasting and more. 

The CN8 x 15 IAS S/E1 and CN8 x 15 IAS S/P1 can be mounted on cameras equipped with large-format (Super 35mm equivalent) sensors, providing a focal length range of 15-120mm through high optical zoom. In comparison to their predecessor models (2), the lenses realize improved performance in a more compact and lightweight design that enhances mobility and enables easier shoulder-mounted operation. 

By using the built-in 1.5x extender, the CN8 x 15 IAS S/E1 and CN8 x 15 IAS S/P1 can toggle to a focal length range of 22.5-180mm. Thanks to an expanded image circle, the lenses can be used with 35mm full-frame sensor cameras, such as Canon EOS C500 Mark II (released in December 2019) and EOS R5 C [3] (released in March 2022) digital cinema cameras. With such broad support for large-format sensor cameras, the lenses support video production for users who demand cinematic visuals with shallow depth-of-field. 

In addition to supporting 12-pin serial communication protocol standard used by broadcast camera systems, the lenses also support communication functions via the lens mount. The CN8 x 15 IAS S/E1 supports EF mount communication (4), while the CN8 x 15 IAS S/P1 supports the /i Technology protocol designed by Cooke Optics, as well as eXtended Data technology from ZEISS. With the capability to externally output a wealth of lens information to the camera via the lens mount during filming, the new lenses contribute to greater efficiency not only during recording, but also in VFX5 and post-production workflows. 

The CN8 x 15 IAS S/E1 and CN8 x 15 IAS S/P1 will be available from early 2023.

The new Flex Zoom lens series are designed for filmmakers in their pursuit of cinematic beauty, equipped with new large-aperture lenses featuring high-level optical design and performance while maintaining the style and ease-of-use of Canon’s EF Cinema lens series. With the introduction of zoom lenses with focal length ranges of 20-50mm for wide-angle and 45-135mm for telephoto, Canon now provides zoom lenses that cover the same range as its six existing prime (single focal length) lenses. The versatility of these new lenses supports efficient visual production workflows for a wide range of scenarios including film, TV programmes, commercials and much more.

When paired with full-frame or large-format cameras, these lenses fully leverage the cameras’ signature shallow depth-of-field to produce smooth and natural background blur, resulting in powerful visuals. What’s more, the lenses maintain a bright T2.4 aperture (1) across their entire zoom ranges, making possible image capture in natural light, even in darker environments. This contributes to less cumbersome lighting setups and video production workflows that are more efficient and cost-effective.

Featuring an optical configuration with optimal placement of lens elements including a large-aperture aspherical lens and an anomalous dispersion glass lens, the CN-E20-50mm T2.4 L F/FP and the CN-E45-135mm T2.4 L F/FP lenses mitigate colour smudging and chromatic aberrations. This enables them to maintain high optical performance from the centre of the image to the periphery when paired with 8K cameras.

In addition to supporting EF-mount data transmission (2), the new lenses are also compatible with /i Technology (3) from Cooke Optics. With this capability, recording metadata such as focus, zoom, aperture and lens model can be transmitted via the lens mount for visualization on the camera itself. This additional information helps contribute to more efficient workflows not only during on-location recording, but also during post-production and editing.

With the option to utilise the photography and videography function separately, it offers the best of both worlds, to fulfil the diverse needs of our consumers.” 

The Canon EOS R5 C can be used either as a video camera with Cinema EOS System quality, or a stills camera with high performance comparable to that of the Canon EOS R5 mirrorless camera (1) [released in July 2020], just by switching modes via the ON/OFF dial on the camera body. This new camera is a complete package with the inclusion of both next-level video and still image capabilities, making it ideal for a wide variety of usage in which mobility is crucial, including journalism and fields that require cinema-level image quality, such as advertising and corporate video production.

The EOS R5 C is equipped with Canon’s proprietary full-frame CMOS sensor that boasts 45 million effective pixels (2) and a DIGIC X image processor that produces an internal recording of 8K / 30P RAW video and 8K / 60P RAW video when using an external power supply (3). The camera is also ideal for a variety of video production scenarios thanks to support for 8K / 30P recording in the highly versatile MP4 file format. 

With full pixel readout from 8K effective pixels, which possess a rich amount of data, the EOS R5 C can also perform oversampling to generate high-image-quality 4K / 4:2:2 / 10bit video. What’s more, a proprietary heat transfer architecture and internal thermal transfer fan built into the EOS R5 C will enable video recording for longer durations than the EOS R5. 

The EOS R5 C employs the Cinema RAW Light recording format that preserves the data-richness of RAW video while reducing file size. Thanks to internal recording capabilities, video can be recorded on media such as CFexpress cards without the need for an external recording device. The camera also supports Canon’s proprietary XF-AVC format based on broadcast standards, making it versatile and compatible with a wide range of user workflows. What’s more, a high frame rate of up to 4K / 120P enables smooth video recording even when shooting slow-motion video. 

The new camera realizes both high image quality, thanks to a 45 million effective pixel count, and high-speed continuous shooting. Continuous stills shooting of up to approximately 20 frames-per-second (FPS) is possible when using the electronic shutter, and up to approximately 12 FPS when using the mechanical shutter/electronic curtain4, thus making possible high-quality image capture even for moving subjects. 

Pricing and Availability

The EOS R5 C is priced at $6,599 and will be available for pre-order from 25 February 2022 to 15 March 2022 on Canon eShop and at the following Canon authorised dealers – Alan Photo, Bally Photo, Cathay Photo and SLR Revolution.

Customers who purchase the Canon EOS R5 C during this period will be eligible to receive a 512GB CFExpress Type B memory card and a CFExpress Card Reader worth $1,200. The EOS R5 C is expected to be shipped from 31 March 2022.

(1) The EOS R5 C is not equipped with in-body image stabilization (IBIS), and therefore cannot work in conjunction with optical stabilization mechanisms on the lens side.

Most of my technology (consumer and enterprise) coverage are published on my other website, TGH Technology and Business Portal/Blog, while TGH Photography and Travel Portal/Blog covers mainly photography, travel, food and in recent years (videography and filmmaking). I have been doing storytelling and content creation through my photographs and writing here on this website for more than a decade and counting (my website is celebrating a 15 years milestone in April 2021), I feel that this Short & Sharp – A mobile film festival would be an ideal sharing for myself and fellow creatives.

Ahead of the Short & Sharp: A mobile film festival taking place in May, Samsung is commencing a call for entries starting from 27th February for aspiring storytellers and serious content makers to submit a 1-minute short film shot on any mobile phone based on the theme “What the World Needs Now” – inspired by the new world we live, work and play where the pandemic has moved us to express our hope, joy, compassion and humanity in new ways.

15 shortlisted finalists will get to work with the who’s who of the local film and content industry, with the winner walking away with a cash prize of $20,000, Samsung products and an opportunity to produce Samsung-branded video content in 2022. They will create content using the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G while working with luminaries such as:

• Eric Khoo, Award winning filmmaker, Cultural Medallion recipient (Film) and the first Singaporean director to showcase his feature films at major global film festivals
• Anthony Chen, Film Director, First Singaporean to be awarded at the Cannes Film Festival and Winner of 3 Golden Horse Awards
• Mark Lee, veteran Singapore entertainer most known his comedic works. In 2017, he founded production house King Kong Media Productions, focusing on digital content, and was most recently nominated in the 57^th Golden Horse Awards for his portrayal as a drag queen in the feature film, Number 1

If not for short films, I doubt I would be making features today. Working on my early short films provided me with the best training and preparation for my big dive into features.

I believe very strongly in the importance of short film competitions as that was the platform by which I started my own career. Not only that but over the years, I have also discovered many promising and talented directors through these competitions.

Canon EOS C70 – First Cinema EOS Camera with RF mount

The Canon EOS C70 is the first Cinema EOS System camera to be equipped with an RF mount, opening up a new era, opportunities and possibilities in cinematography and videography, making it compatible with any of the RF lenses from Canon’s EOS R System. Users can also equip themselves with the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x (sold separately and more information below), the EOS C70 can also support the extensive lineup of lenses available from the Canon EF lenses family (2).

Featuring a 4K Super 35mm CMOS DGO (Dual Gain Output) sensor, the EOS C70 can capture high-image-quality 4K video in 4:2:2 (10-bit) color that delivers rich gradation, even in environments with significantly high contrast which demands high dynamic range. Moreover, the camera is equipped with the DIGIC DV7 image-processing platform capable of high-speed processing, enabling users to record high-frame rate 4K/120P video to UHS-II standard SD cards. 

The EOS C70 is equipped with two SD card slots and supports a variety of recording modes such as simultaneous recording, relay recording and 4K/2K recording. The camera also inherits many professional features found in the existing Cinema EOS lines, including two mini XLRs, audio control dials, Timecode IN/OUT ,full HDMI terminal and the newly designed “Direct Touch Control” function that allows users to change recording settings quickly and directly from the camera’s touchscreen panel. 

In addition, the camera also incorporates Canon’s proprietary Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, which offers even greater performance with the addition of our Intelligent Tracking and Recognition System. This advanced algorithm developed under deep learning technology works in conjunction with our Face Detection AF and further improves focus tracking, even when a subject is looking away from the camera. Combined with our new highly responsive touch screen, image focusing is now faster and even more intuitive. 

Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x

Along with the announcement of the Canon EOS C70, Canon also announced the launch of the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x, a lens adapter for the EOS C70, the first RF mount camera model from the Cinema EOS System, this adapter would enable the camera to use EF series lenses.

Employing a miniaturized optical system, the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x allows for video recording using the EOS C70 and EF series lenses with an angle of view close to that of the mounted full-frame lens. This allows users to take full advantage of the wide selection of EF series lenses as well as expands the possibilities and flexibility of video production. 

The optical system of the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x reduces focal length by 0.71x, thus allowing the EOS C70—equipped with a Super-35mm DGO sensor—to record video using EF lenses (2) originally designed for full-frame sensors with an angle of view similar to the original angle of the full-frame lenses. In addition, reducing the size of the optical system gains approximately one extra stop (one lens aperture “f-number”) of brightness, thus requiring lower ISO sensitivity. This enables high-image-quality recording with less noise, even in low-light environments such as indoors or at night. 

When equipped with EF lenses (3) via the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x, the EOS C70 digital cinema camera can achieve the same Dual Pixel CMOS AF autofocus functionality across the entire image, just like digital cinema cameras with an EF mount. In addition, the camera can also record and display data such as peripheral illumination correction, effectiveness of lateral chromatic aberration correction, F-number and focal length. 

Canon CJ20eX5B – Designed for 4K broadcast cameras

Together with the Canon EOS C70 and Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x announcements, Canon announced the launch of a new addition to its UHDxs series of portable zoom lenses for 4K broadcast cameras employing 2/3 inch sensors.

The CJ20eX5B offers a 20x zoom ratio with a focal length of 5 mm at the wide end while achieving superb 4K optical performance throughout the entire zoom range. Delivering high optical performance, the CJ20eX5B creates immersive and high-quality visual expression of content such as sports broadcasting and programming content filmed on-location. With the addition of this new lens for 4K broadcast cameras, Canon helps support a wide range of user needs. 

The CJ20eX5B features a wide-angle focal length of 5 mm—ideal for capturing expansive scenes including full stadium views—while also providing a 20x zoom ratio that accommodates a range of frequently used focal lengths up to 100 mm. On top of this, the lens is equipped with a built-in 2x extender that enables users to quickly double the focal length up to 200 mm while preserving fine visual details. 

While delivering 4K optical performance, the CJ20eX5B achieves a compact and lightweight design comparable to HD camera lenses, weighing only approximately 2.24 kg (4) and measuring approximately 166.3 mm (W) x 110.8 mm (H) x 251.7 mm (D). As such, the lens maintains the high levels of maneuverability required while reducing operation stress during production. 

The CJ20eX5B utilizes fluorite, UD and super UD lens (5) elements, all optimally arranged in a proprietary optical configuration. This allows for excellent suppression of chromatic aberrations such as color bleeding and fringing to achieve excellent image quality all the way to the peripheral areas of the image.

(1) The EOS C70 measures approximately 160.0 mm (W) x 130.2 mm (H) x 115.9 mm (D) and weighs approximately  

(2) Includes CN-E (EF cinema) lenses. Excludes RF lenses, EF-M lenses, EF-S lenses and some manual focus lenses.  

(3) As of September 25, 2020, the following lenses are compatible: the EF16-35mm f/2.8L III USM (released in October 2016), the EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM (released in September 2012), the EF24-105mm f/4L IS II USM (released in November 2016). Canon plans to gradually expand the list of compatible lenses by providing free-of-charge firmware updates. EF lenses are still compatible with the camera, but Canon recommends that firmware updates be installed in order to effectively utilize functions which link the camera and lens.  

(4) For the CJ20eX5B IASE S. The CJ20eX5B IRSE S weighs approximately 2.16 kg. The CJ20eX5B IASE S is equipped with a focus servo motor, while the CJ20eX5B IRSE S is not.

Reading through the information and details of Canon FilmFIVE Festival for this year 2019, this is a great opportunity for young students to learn more about filmmaking, unleash their creative potential and produce short films. They are able to get hands on learning and shooting with Canon latest cameras, the Canon EOS R and Canon EOS RP, both full-frame mirrorless cameras. I didn’t go into filmmaking at the start, I started off with photography (more than three decades back), from film to digital. For the past two years, I started to explore videos and filmmaking, learning a new skill, expanding and complementing my photography with filmmaking. The Canon EOS R and Canon EOS RP, the two full-frame mirrorless cameras, can give you the opportunities to explore and produce both photography and filmmaking together, with its wide range of Canon lenses available. FilmFIVE Festival, a nationwide filmmaking competition which seeks to nurture young aspiring filmmakers from educational institutions and empower them to express their creativity through films and photography. In partnership with the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) this year, the FilmFIVE Festival will run from 27 April to 20 September 2019. 

“The inaugural FilmFIVE Festival in 2018 saw 44 teams work on producing their own films. We’ve received a lot of positive feedback and hence have decided to bring it back this year on a greater scale, with more workshops, more brand partners and we hope to see more teams participating this year,” said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore. “Canon is proud to provide a platform where youth can hone their creative filmmaking skills for a good cause.” 

“We are glad to be part of the Canon FilmFIVE Festival 2019. At NCPG, we absolutely believe that youths can make a positive impact on a wide range of issues. We are looking forward to hear from their unique perspectives as young film makers which we hope to help amplify to the wider community,” said Nicholas Aaron Khoo, Chairman of the NCPG Youth Sub-Committee. 

The theme for this year will be any word that begins with ‘Re’. Inspired by Canon’s new line of full frame mirrorless cameras – the EOS R and EOS RP – where the R stands for ‘Reimagine’, participants will create their short film according to their interpretation of the theme. There will be two categories, secondary school and open youth for participants below the age of 30. 

To equip youths with basic knowledge of filmmaking leading up to the closing of entries, there will be a complimentary three-day filmmaking boot camp workshop held in end June. Led by Canon Imaging Academy (CIA), participants will have a chance to shoot with Canon’s cameras and other production equipment supported by brand partners1. They can also loan Canon’s new full-frame mirrorless cameras to do their actual shoot after the boot camp. Additionally, in collaboration with local polytechnics, there will be five complimentary workshops conducted covering various topics of filmmaking across different polytechnics. 

Entries submission will close in mid-September and judging will commence in October. A gala screening of the nominees’ films and announcement of winners will take place in November. Winning entries for this competition will stand a chance to have their short films commissioned by NCPG.
