My knowledge and understanding of the Canon EOS M series cameras went back to their first Canon EOS M mirrorless camera in year 2012 that my parents owned and used until the Canon EOS RP entered into the frame, replacing it in 2019. Along with camera reviews completed for some of the Canon EOS M series cameras such as the EOS M50, EOS M6, EOS M5, EOS M10 and EOS M3. Over my years of owning and using Canon EOS DSLR series cameras and most recently adding the Canon EOS RP into my lineup, my ongoing coverage of Canon cameras and lenses, with various camera reviews completed allowed me to publish an article on the Canon mirrorless journey from EOS M to EOS R.

Canon announced the latest addition to the EOS mirrorless interchangeable lens camera line-up: the EOS M200. A compact and intuitive camera, the EOS M200 is perfect for those looking to up their social media game from smartphone photography, to deliver higher quality images and videos to their followers. The camera is also ideal for users who desire higher quality selfie stills and videos or enthusiasts who wish to embark on their photography journey.

Stills and videos that stand out

At the heart of the EOS M200 is a 24.1 megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor. The Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, which is proprietary to Canon, has been improved and the number of AF zones available for automatic selection has expanded to a maximum of 143 points, ensuring that users can achieve high-speed AF with fast live view shooting effortlessly for sharp high-quality images.

Being an interchangeable lens camera, users have the flexibility of selecting different EF-M lenses for various purposes, be it for macro, portrait, wide angle or telephoto shots, allowing more creative expression for various content. The camera can also be adapted to use Canon’s existing line-up of EF/EF-S lenses, which further expands the freedom of imagination for users to deliver unique content.

What is a portrait or selfie if the eyes are not in focus? As eyes are the windows to the soul, the Eye Detection AF ensures that the subject’s eyes are always in focus even if the subject is constantly moving – allowing the user to focus more on nailing that perfect shot with more natural expression.

With the new DIGIC 8 image processor, ISO capabilities have been enhanced on the EOS M200 and a maximum ISO speed of ISO 25600 (expandable to ISO 51200) is achievable for still images. This makes capturing clear images in dark locations possible. The EOS M200 is also capable of shooting 4K videos at a smooth 24p and 25p, with high image clarity and blurred background expression.

Stylish design and useful features

Designed to be slim and lightweight, the EOS M200 body weighs approximately 299g and can easily fit into bags. With two colours to choose from, the black EOS M200 comes in a premium matte finish whereas the white EOS M200 is designed with a textured grip and a sleek silver accent on the top body—that perfect style companion. Crafted not only for ergonomic comfort, it is designed with intuitive three mode dial on the top ensuring quick access so the user would not miss that perfect moment that they want to share with their followers.

The camera also comes with the Creative Assist function, where users can easily adjust the desired look of photos directly in-camera with intuitive words such as “brightness” and “background blur” without having prior knowledge of shutter speed, aperture or white balance. Additionally, a variety of in-camera creative filters allow users to add effects to their photos – such as grainy film, HDR oil painting, watercolour and fish-eye effects.

Equipped with a Silent Shooting mode, users of the EOS M200 can shoot still images in scenarios such as presentations, music recitals and art museums without worrying about the shutter sound. The LCD screen of the camera tilts 180 degrees with a dedicated self-portrait mode. With most social content being consumed on mobile, content with vertical orientation is key. The EOS M200 fulfils that criteria with the ability to record movies that would automatically playback in vertical position on mobile devices. Movies can also be easily recorded with the record button displayed on the LCD.

What’s more, the visual guide, which is particularly useful for those who are new to photography, is built into the EOS M200’s user interface. This includes a shooting mode guide, a menu display with item descriptions, along with hints and tips to understand technical terms. There is also the optionalTripod Grip accessory HG100-TBR that can also double up as a table tripod and for steadier handheld recording, which will come in handy for content creators who take selfie shots or videos.

Smartphone connectivity

In addition to Wi-Fi, the EOS M200 supports Bluetooth connection as a way to connect to smart devices such as smartphones and tablets. Once the initial pairing setting is complete, the EOS M200 and the corresponding smart device will automatically connect via Bluetooth. After pairing and selecting a function within the app, the camera will automatically be connected with the appropriate connection method.

Users can transfer images via Wi-Fi connection from the EOS M200 to a smart device in two ways: the conventional method of transferring only selected images or send images to the smart device simultaneously while shooting. The latter will be especially useful for those who want to manage captured images quickly so they could upload to social media.

On a personal basis, I really like the aesthestics, buttons layout design and feel of the EOS M6, the dials and surface feeling, giving a retro feel of the film camera, this vintage style design of the Canon EOS M6 packed with Canon’s modern camera and photography technology.

When the Canon EOS M6 was available for a loan review in December 2017, I took up the opportunity to loan and review the Canon EOS M6. This lightweight and easy to use Canon EOS M6 accompanied me for various photography adventures, attending events, taking photos of dogs and cats, product shoot, food photography, street photography and priceless memories from my gatherings with friends and family.

Now let me share my thoughts and views of the Canon EOS M6 through the paragraphs below:

Aesthestics / Body

• Solid and rugged feel on the camera body
• Knobs on the tops of the camera body for adjusting shutter and aperture are solid, easy to use
• On / Off switch is a lever, improved from the small button of the earlier EOS M models
• Exposure compensation dial on the top
• Dial mode on the top, easy to access and use
• Touch screen, easy to use, can drag and choose AF point
• Tilt screen can go 180 degrees, ideal for selfies/wefies and countdown timer individual/group shots
• Tilt screen can turn to 90 degrees, horizontal level, making it easy for low level or tilt/looking up photography
• Level and Histogram can be switched on during shooting that allows the photographer to have more information
• Lightweight
• Camera handgrip is well built and solid
• Wi-Fi button on the right side of the camera, easy to press, connect and use.

Canon EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Review

• A good focal length range, wide to mid-telephoto zoom
• Decent bokeh
• Versatile
• AF not fast when tracking fast moving subjects
• Lightweight, easy to carry around
• Quite solid build and feel
• In-built Image Stabliser (IS)

Photographs Quality

• Sharp and accurate details of subject
• Colours – vibrant and accurate
• ISO 25,600 is the maximum, noise level is quite high, not recommended unless necessary

Notes:

• No in-built EVF, optional accessory
• No 4K video

I have to confess that the vintage style design of the Canon EOS M6 won me over along with its lightweight, easy to use, excellent buttons/dials layout design and strong capabilities.

The Canon EOS M6 is ideal and well suited for travel, family, daily usage camera that allows you to carry a lightweight and portable mirrorless camera out for leisure and work purposes.

While there is no 4K video capability and no in-built EVF (optional accessory EVF-DC2 is available), the two capabilities that I would love to have inside the Canon EOS M6. With regards to the EVF, I am from the “old school” of photography, thus I always prefer to take photographs through the viewfinder.

The Canon EOS M6 camera is an easy to use, lightweight and portable, packed with pretty good technical capabilities. It’s suitable for first time photographers, as well as for seasoned photographers too. Is this the Canon mirrorless camera that should be in my everyday bag?

The key differences between the EOS M5 and M6 are

(1)  the built-in view finder on the EOS M5 while the EOS M6 does not have it and they do have the optional EVF DC-2 that can be purchased separately and attached to the hot-shoe.

(2) Rear LCD screen – EOS M5 rear LCD screen tilts downwards at an angle of 85 degrees up and while the EOS M6 rear LCD screen tilts 180 degrees upwards and 45 degrees downwards.

In my personal humble opinion, the Canon EOS M6 is the next mirrorless camera model after the EOS M10 yet it sits below the EOS M5. The EOS M6 is catered for a different group of customers, probably more of those who prefer the fun and ease of handling without the demands/needs of the built-in viewfinder. A purist photographer would probably choose the EOS M5 because they have the built-in viewfinder that they can use when they are shooting. Personally, I prefer to have a built-in viewfinder for my choice of mirrorless camera.

I am currently testing and reviewing the Canon EOS M5 and I would share my review article at a later time (and update here accordingly when it is ready). If the opportunity arises, I would test and review the Canon EOS M6 too.

Rapid and precise AF performance with Dual Pixel CMOS AF

Equipped with 24.2-Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 7 image processor, the EOS M6 delivers crisp image quality with low noise. Powered by Dual Pixel CMOS AF with approximately 24.2 million phase-difference sensors, AF is possible on approximately an 80% x 80% area of the focal plane’s entire surface. This enables fast and accurate tracking when shooting stills and videos, even when the subject is positioned at the edges of the frame. The touch AF further facilitates efficiency when conducting focus adjustments especially during macro and portrait shoots. Additionally, minute adjustments of the AF frame can also be done effortlessly through the controller wheel in the magnified view for accurate and precise focus.

The improved noise reduction performance as enabled by the DIGIC 7 image processor expands the normal ISO speed range from 100 to 25600. This notable improvement ensures sharp and crisp image quality even when shooting in low-light conditions.

Movie shooting

Full HD at 60p is supported, allowing the EOS M6 to capture smooth and beautiful footage. With the combination of Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology and STM lens, the EOS M6 allow users to achieve fast and accurate tracking during video shooting to achieve cinematographic effects without introducing mechanical noises generated by the lens motor during auto-focusing.

The EOS M6 also features Combination IS with in-camera 5-axis image stabilization through a compatible lens. Combination IS leverages optical IS and in-camera digital IS to help create seamless videos. Additionally, the DIGIC 7 image processor makes the 5-axis image stabilization possible even with lenses that do not contain IS due to the independent in-camera image stabilization that reduces camera shake during video shoots.

Intuitive user experience with improved ergonomics

With a 3.0” touch panel LCD screen that tilts 180 degrees upwards and 45 degrees downwards, users have the flexibility of taking photos from different angles with ease. The quick dial controls also simplify adjustments even while on foot as settings can be switched around quickly without needing to toggle back to the menu screen. This provides a significant improvement to the levels of comfort and freedom for users, especially when shooting in manual mode.

With a screen size of 0.39” and approximately 2.36 million dots OLED panel, the optional electronic viewfinder (EVF-DC2) is comparably smaller and lighter than the conventional EVFs. For the user, the EVF reflects a highly accurate image representation of what is seen by the camera sensor without interference from glare. The EVF-DC2 is compatible with selected Canon camera models such as PowerShot G1 X Mark II, PowerShot G3 X and EOS M3.

Seamless with Bluetooth Low Energy technology

With Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, users can transfer images and videos from the camera to the smart devices and upload them onto the Canon Image Gateway, social media platforms and cloud storage. And by using the Canon Camera Connect app, users have real-time control of camera settings such as shutter speed, focus selection and self-timer and more.

In addition, EOS M6 features Bluetooth low energy technology which maintains constant connection to a compatible smart device at a low power consumption. With this constant connection, users can view images, start remote capture from the camera, even when the camera is in Auto Power Off mode. Smart devices with Bluetooth can wake the camera up, and switch to wi-fi for browsing and viewing images or perform remote capture (with Live View). Users can also use Bluetooth to perform basic remote capture (no Live View), control image playback and slide show when the camera is connected to a TV or projector via smart devices.

Easy switch of lenses for changing your perspectives

The EOS M6 is available in 2 kit options: EF-M18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM kit and EF-M15-45mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM kit.

For existing EOS DSLR users, the Mount Adapter EF-EOS M (sold separately) allows full compatibility with over 70 EF/EF-S lenses. This offers users a wider range of creative options and shooting perspectives all without compromising on image quality and capabilities.
