Why did I choose the Canon EOS RP?

Inside my Canon EOS RP review article that I recently published, I wrote about why did I choose the Canon EOS RP. Investing in the Canon EOS RP had been in the works for a period of time as I was searching for that mirrorless camera that suits my needs and requirements, the search took a bit of time.

In my personal humble opinion, this Canon EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera is probably the full-frame mirrorless camera that has the potential to change the full-frame mirrorless market even further, a low cost, value for money and capable full-frame mirrorless camera that would attract photographers to upgrade from their compact cameras or professionals to own it as a backup and fun camera to have.

DSLR versus Mirrorless

This is probably a never ending debate in the photography world, DSLR versus Mirrorless, there are so many debates out there, too much noise at times. Both DSLR and mirrorless cameras are good and solid in their own rights, DSLR system has been a proven camera system over time while mirrorless system has improved significantly over the years. Would DSLR camera system continue to decline, mirrorless system continues to rise and takes over the photography world? Maybe yes, maybe no.

I would not be emphasising too much into this debate for my article, let’s concentrate on the fun, craft and beauty of photography, capturing the moments, telling the stories with the best of both worlds with DSLR and mirrorless cameras together, with the Canon EOS 1DX Mark II and Canon EOS RP as my current/personal best of both worlds setup.

Final thoughts and views on Canon EOS R versus Canon EOS RP

Canon EOS R versus Canon EOS RP, which camera suits you better? This really depends on your budget, needs and requirements. The Canon EOS R system and family is only going to get bigger, with more RF lenses being lined up and patiently waiting for more Canon EOS R camera bodies to be announced (looking forward to the 1D series equivalent EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera).

I had a short period of time when I had both Canon EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera (for review) and the arrival of the Canon EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera (from Canon Singapore Online Shop purchase) side by side, that gave me some insights into how similar and different both Canon EOS R cameras are. The arrival of the Canon EOS RP brought upon a new change in my photography, on a more personal and fun basis, an inspiration came into me with the launch of a new TGH Photography x Canon EOS RP Explorer Series Production. Some of my Canon EOS RP exploration stories were exploring Jewel Changi Airport with Canon EOS RP, Changi Experience Studio @ Jewel Changi Airport, testing and reviewing the Canon RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM lens with the Canon EOS RP.

Thoughts and Views

My Canon EOS RP had been a fun and capable camera, on both leisure and commercial photography segments. There were adventures and explorations, along with completing commercial videography and photography assignments. Let me share my thoughts and views of the Canon EOS RP below:

Body/Aesthetics

• Lightweight, sturdy, comfortable to carry and having a good grip
• No top panel to view shooting information
• Battery is LP-E17, battery life is not as lasting
• There is no joy stick on the Canon EOS RP, just like the Canon EOS R, I would love to have the joy stick control on the Canon EOS R series camera bodies.
• Flip screen is really very useful for photography and videography works
• Buttons layout are similar to existing Canon camera models, Canon users would not have too much issues adapting
• The Canon EOS R has a cover when the lens is detached, protecting the sensor from dust entering it. However, the Canon EOS RP doesn’t have the cover
• Single card slot

Performance/Autofocus/Technology

• Digic 8 processor and 26.2MP sensor, accurate colours
• Anti-Flickr
• EVF can view in very dark conditions
• Eye Auto-Focus has improved significantly since testing it on the Canon EOS M5 (thanks to Dual Pixel CMOS AF)
• Focus tracking and auto-focusing on moving objects has improved since Canon started their mirrorless cameras, still not as fast as DSLR AF.
• No IBIS
• Wi-fi and bluetooth enabled
• Remote Shooting via Wi-Fi and Camera Connect App
• Touch shutter
• Drag and pull AF point on screen

Videography

• The Canon EOS RP is able to shoot in 4K, FHD and HD
• I found that the AF for the Canon EOS RP is slightly slower than the Canon EOS R when shooting videos
• It can record time lapse movies (which I haven’t got the chance to try this out yet)
• Movie Digital IS is good and useful when shooting handheld video
• A capable camera for shooting videos even though they have less options in options for movie recording size

The Canon EOS RP is similar to the Canon EOS R, therefore they would have similar review points across both review articles.

In a recent joint collaboration with Hpility SG, we were covering MPA Singapore Maritime Week 2019, shooting and producing videos for their social media platforms. My Canon EOS RP played a role in those videos, showcasing that it is more than capable of handling commercial videography works. Do check out some of the videos from SMW 2019 below!

Canon EOS R vs Canon EOS RP, which is more suitable for you?

I mentioned previously in my earlier articles and also in this article that the Canon EOS RP was not a review unit, it was a family shared camera that we purchased after some discussion. I had the opportunity to do a review of the Canon EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera (after my family and myself made the decision to purchase the Canon EOS RP), I was impressed with its capabilities and how it handled personal and commercial photography works during the review period.

The Canon EOS R versus Canon EOS RP, which is more suitable for you? I would address them in more detail in my upcoming article (link would be updated when article is published), a comparison of Canon EOS R versus Canon EOS RP full-frame mirrorless cameras and which of the two Canon full-frame mirrorless cameras might suit you better.

Why did I choose the Canon EOS RP?

For this segment of my Canon EOS RP review article, I would share some of my insights, thoughts and views on why I chose the Canon EOS RP. I had been photographing for quite some time now, following and observing photography trends over the decades and still counting. If you had been reading and following my photography and cameras coverage, you would know that I have been on the lookout for a mirrorless camera.

The Canon EOS M6 and Canon EOS M50 (I reviewed both cameras) were close to fulfilling my requirements. The announcement of the Canon EOS R took it even closer, the arrival of Canon’s full-frame mirrorless cameras into the Canon EOS World and photography industry. I published an article with my insights, thoughts and views on Canon’s mirrorless journey from Canon EOS M to Canon EOS R through my coverage and reviews that I did over the years.

The Canon EOS RP fits into my requirements for a low cost full-frame mirrorless camera, easy to use and still being able to be a backup camera for my commercial photography work. I still have my Canon EOS 1DX Mark II, my flagship camera, now reserved mainly for commercial shoots.

The Canon EOS RP is also ideal for fun, leisure, social media and v-logging, it has also inspired me to enter into videography and filmmaking with them. In my personal view, at this current stage in time, my current setup of Canon EOS 1DX Mark II and Canon EOS RP gives me the best of both worlds of photography and videography/filmmaking. While the Canon EOS RP is not in the league of the 1DX series with its faster auto focus and high frame rate per second (we shouldn’t be comparing them side by side as well), the Canon EOS RP can still get some high speed action job done with its 5fps with one shot AF!

I do not rule out adding another camera in between the Canon EOS 1DX Mark II and Canon EOS RP, I would like to wait and see how the Canon EOS R family of cameras and RF lenses develop in the coming years before making any further decision.

Let me bring you through on a tour, through my photos and stories, of our adventures at the Canopy Park attractions on Level 5 of Jewel Changi Airport .

Canopy Park @ L5 (Attractions included in Canopy Park admission fee)

During the preview visits to Jewel Changi Airport, visitors caught a glimpse of the Canopy Park attractions on Level 5 at Jewel Changi Airport. They attracted attention from the media and public, visitors at the preview had the opportunity to view them from the side lines when they were walking around on Level 5.

Before beginning your #PlayatJewel fun adventures, I would like to share some  tips with you if you are going to visit the various Canopy Park attractions and have lots of fun!

• Wear sturdy covered shoes!
• Wear pants!
• Bring a small bag to keep your belongings and you can put them in a locker.

Discovery Slides

Open from 9am to 3am

You can’t miss this bright yellow colour slides, 4 different slides in 1 playground and the kids (even adults) would love it! There is a 6.5m high platform, climb to the top for an even more magnificent view of Shiseido Forest Valley, the lush greenery and the HSBC Rain Vortex.

Foggy Bowls

Open from 9am to 3am

Ever wonder what is like to be amongst the clouds? Foggy bowls provide you the feeling amongst the clouds through their mist-emitting concave bowls. Sit inside there, relax and feel that you are floating in the clouds! The kids would definitely have fun there, chasing and running into the “clouds” at Foggy bowls.

Petal Garden

Walk through an international display of seasonal flowers from all around the world, enjoy the lush colourful and creative display.

Topiary Walk

Remember to bring your cameras along for this Topiary Walk, time to take photos with the animal topiaries. Spot Ah Meng and take photo!

Hedge Maze

Get yourself lost in Singapore’s largest indoor hedge maze. It’s pretty challenging and fun, spot the decorative gates and finger mazes. Remember to head up onto the circular look-out platform for a bird’s eye view of this amazing indoor hedge maze!

Mirror Maze

10 July onwards – 10am to 10pm

Mirror mirror on the walls, which is the quickest way out for all of us inside? The world’s first mirror maze with a garden setting, hanging plants above you, with the sunlight filtering through them. This is a really fun attraction to play with your family and children!

Manulife Sky Nets – Walking

10 July onwards – 10am to 10pm

This Manulife Sky Nets is going to give you an opportunity to walk above ground, over a five storey high void. If you have height phobia, don’t look down below you feet and the walking net! Your adrenaline will definitely be pumped up as you walk through the world’s first indoor sky net!

Manulife Sky Nets – Bouncing

10 June to 9 July – 9am to 3am

10 July onwards – 10am to 10pm

Walking up into the Manulife Sky Nets, this is going to be a lot of bouncing action, the children will love it and the adults too! The highest point is 8m tall, you can catch a bird’s eye view of the Shiseido Forest Valley, the lush greenery, Skytrains and the HSBC Rain Vortex.

Canopy Bridge

9am to 3am daily

This is the closet that you can get to the HSBC Rain Vortex in the Shiseido Forest Valley. Photographers would definitely love the view on this 50m long bridge, suspended 23m above ground! Remember to look down on the glass bottom Canopy Bridge and you can view the first floor of Jewel Changi Airport!

The opening of Jewel Changi Airport attracted significant local and international attention, it’s more than just an airport shopping mall. Although some years back, there were some doubts and questions on building Jewel Changi Airport, this was Changi Airport strategically planning ahead for the future, innovating, adapting and taking big bold steps to continue making and keeping Changi Airport as world class airport hub and a destination hub for travelers.

Personally, I was impressed by their architecture and design, a good mixture of modern contemporary design, from the exterior walking towards Jewel Changi Airport, it looks like a space station/planet from Star Wars! Upon entering, there is a mix of Jurassic Park with its greenery and valley design (that’s the Shiseido Forest Valley), the roof top looks a bit similar to Gardens By The Bay Cloud and Flower Domes and there are also some similar elements from Marina Bay Sands Shoppes! The World tallest indoor waterfall at 40m high, is probably inspired by Avatar and science fiction movies/dramas depicting a portal/stargate to teleport people to another universe and dimension!

I brought the Canon EOS RP with the RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM lens and EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM lens for my two visits to Jewel Changi Airport during the preview period. The small, compact and lightweight Canon EOS RP is great, liking it a lot for its performance and quality of photos. I shot some videos of Jewel Changi Airport with the Canon EOS RP too! For my next visit to Jewel Changi Airport, I am planning to bring my EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens along as well!

Me, the Canon EOS RP Explorer was just busy finding various locations to take photographs inside Jewel Changi Airport, while it had been really crowded during the preview, I managed to find a few spots that I like and I would definitely go back again at a later time, to further explore the Canopy Park on Level 5 (opening on 10^thJune 2019), take a walk on the Canopy Bridge (opening 10^thJune 2019), find spots for plane spotting inside Jewel Changi Airport and finding other spots to photograph the HSBC Rain Vortex from other locations at the Shiseido Forest Valley. At the foot of the HSBC Rain Vortex, I am planning to photograph the light rays shining through the waterfall from below and hopefully rainbow across it too!

Oh yes, I haven’t even started exploring the wide variety of food options. As a young kid, A&W was part of my childhood, yes, A&W, I am definitely coming for you! Since I am not too much of a shopper, shopping would not be a top priority, nevertheless, I would check out some of the retail outlets that I like, such as Tokyu Hands.

Through the photographs that I took at Jewel Changi Airport with my Canon EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera, I hope that it would give you more information on the spots and locations inside this modern multi usage and facilities hub that caters to both local and international visitors. When I depart from Changi Airport and arrive back at Changi Airport, I hope to take and share photos of Jewel Changi Airport from the sky! For travelers departing from Singapore, there is now a big incentive to arrive a few more hours earlier at Changi Airport, relax, have a meal and fun at Jewel Changi Airport before checking in for your flight.
