Welcome to Lomography School!

Film is not dead, film is making a comeback, Lomographic Society International thinks that film is forever and they are launching themselves into a new era of analogue photography. You, the photographers (whether young or old, experienced or amateur) are hereby cordially invited to attend the Lomography School! It’s not going to be stuffy classroom withs grey walls, uncomfortable desks or even mess on your seat and table.

Lomographic Society International is launching this dedicated online learning space to make creativity accessible to all – Totally free! There are no more hard-to-understand descriptions, they have put together the answers to the most FAQ from the Lomography Community. This would make it the leading space on the internet and social media platforms, to learn all about analogue – from the basic techniques to how to take experimental Lomographs.

Who can join? What do I need?

Anyone can join, as long as you have a passion for analogue, it’s for everyone. Whether you are just start learning analogue photography or you are an experienced film photographer looking to become more creative, everyone is welcome at the Lomography School.

What can I expect from Lomography School?

Lomography School provides information about all the exciting experimental techniques that have been inspiring the imagination of Lomographers far and wide over the past 30 years. Analogue photographers can learn how to shoot mesmerising multiple exposures, uncover handy tips and tricks like mastering the pinhole and read detailed explanations (that they actually understand) about what the hell pushing and pulling mean, and so much more.

If the answer isn’t there, Lomography School has set up a dedicated mailbox, school@lomography.com, so curious students can send in their most burning questions. The Lomography School want this to be an ever-growing, interactive space and if anyone has a useful trick to share, Lomo School want to hear it! Exposing 30 Years of Lomography History and Heritage!

The story of Lomography began in November 1992, let’s start exposing 30 years of Lomography history and heritage! The fine Lomographic Society International was founded in the grand-old city of Vienna, Austria. There was a dignified “10 Golden Rules of Lomography”, it was published in the Wiener Zeitung – one of the oldest newspapers in the world(!) – and at the first venerable “everyone is an artist” LomoWall a couple of thousand Lomographs were shown.

It all began with the discovery of the quirky little Lomo LC-A camera by some unbrushed happy-go-luck students in Prague that had officially become the global Lomographic movement that we know of today. If you do your maths correctly from 1992, Lomography is now 30 years old and they are proud to be an eccentric, free, wonderful, enthusiastic, creative, experimental, social, wonderful Lomography Community, uniting millions of analogue admirers from around the world who are keen to help us keep film photography alive!

Limited Edition Anniversary Lomo LC-A Cameras

In the year 2011, the film and visual production industries have both film-analog and digital equipment that were being used side-by-side in the cinema production industry. The world of digitalisation was continuing its spread and digital cameras equipped with Super 35mm equivalent large-format sensors were becoming the mainstay of the industry. Amid this environment, Canon leveraged on tis visual technologies, including the optical technologies cultivated since its founding, and launched its Cinema EOS System, thus formally marking its entry into the cinema production industry.

Ever since, Canon has continued to expand the boundaries of visual expression and pursue the development of devices with ever-evolving technology. The company’s first Cinema EOS camera, the EOS C300, which is equipped with a CMOS sensor that realizes video reproduction comparable to 35mm film, was awarded a Technology and Engineering Emmy® award from The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) in 2012. What’s more, the company has been honored for its cinema lenses, having received another Technology and Engineering Emmy® award in 2017 for its 4K cinema lenses that have earned high praise from the market for its excellent optical performance. 

Canon’s Cinema EOS System is widely used in the modern cinema production industry, including in film and television production. The EOS C300 Mark II (released in September 2015) digital cinema camera and eight cinema lenses were used in the filming of the 2018 Academy Award-winning documentary Free Solo. The System was also honored at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020, where the winner of the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Cinematography, ACASĂ, MY HOME, was filmed with the EOS C300 and EOS C100 Mark II (released in December 2014).

Short & Sharp Mobile Festival launched its call for entries earlier in February, it aimed to discover new-age storytellers and content makers who are passionate in telling stories of our generation with any mobile phone. The theme was “What the World Needs Now”, with participants working on short films built upon this theme, inspired by the new world we live in work and play in, and where the pandemic has moved us to express our hope, joy, compassion and humanity in new ways.

Veron Teng’s winning entry, titled, “What the ‘World’ Needs Now” is a short story about a son who is a great advocate in helping the less fortunate. However, he is unaware of this mother’s struggles to make ends meet and accuses her of being un-compassionate during these times. Veron received a S$20,000 cash prize, as well as a Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G and will also earn an opportunity to shoot and co-create video content on the Galaxy range of devices for Samsung’s campaigns in 2022.

“It has been a thoroughly gratifying experience where I was able to unpack and unfold stories with full creative rein. To be able to tell a story solely through the power of a smartphone has been unique, and I’m truly grateful for this opportunity where I’ve been pushed to think out of the box. I look forward to co-creating content with Samsung for their upcoming campaigns, and to also see how I can further unleash my storytelling skills with their devices,” said Teng.

About Short & Sharp, a mobile film festival powered by Samsung 

Launched in February 2021, Short & Sharp is a short film festival organised by Samsung to bring the power of its technology to the hands of storytellers and content creators. The festival saw over 300 entries, with 15 finalists shortlisted. 

Local film and entertainment luminaries including Eric Khoo, Anthony Chen, Mark Lee, Jeanette Aw, Haresh Tilani and Terence Chia from Ministry of Funny and Wong Kim Hoh served as Festival Founders and judges this year. Finalists had an opportunity to attend masterclasses conducted by Festival Founders, where they picked up skills on filmmaking and content creation.
