i Light Singapore 2023 Theme – A New Wave

i Light Singapore 2023, presented by DBS, theme for this year is A New Wave. Using light not not just as a wave that expands and radiates energy in all directions. it’s also a language, a form of communication that give rise to a range of emotions. 

i Light Singapore 2023 will explore the colour “Blue”, when you explore the various artworks on display around Marina Bay. The Blue colour wavelength is strong in the Force that brings you cool tones, vibes and different states of emotion – of calm and serenity.

i Light Singapore photography and exploration tips 

• You might want to bring your tripod along for long exposure shots composition of the artworks, the choice is yours
• Bring a few lenses – wide angle zoom and a mid telephoto zoom lenses would give you different views and perspectives when engaging and photographing the artworks 
• Catch the light artwork projection on the ArtScience Museum during the evening blue hour time, that gives you a different background colour and feel 
• Wear comfortable shoes (You would be walking quite a fair bit)
• Wear comfortable clothes (It can be pretty hot and humid at times)
• Bring a water bottle and remember to hydrate
• Split up your i Light Singapore visit over a few nights, maybe one visit on a weekend, the other visit can be on a weekday

Ignite Your Spark on your DBS passport journey at i Light Singapore 2023, you can easily access just by scanning a QR code with your smartphone. An interactive journey begins for you whereby you would be challenged to collect 4 digital stamps on your DBS Passport, by participating in various experiences at Blumiwave and within the DBS Zone.

Blumiwave at Mist Walk is an artwork that aims to raise awareness of blue energy, an alternative renewable energy source that is harnessed from the sea and river waters. Created by local artists from DP Design, the “crashing” waves of Blumiwave are made of a carefully weaved fabric of safety nets and scaffolding from salvaged from construction sites. 

All plastics used in the construction of Blumiwave will recycled by Magorium after this festival is over. Magorium is a social enterprise supported by DBS Foundation, they convert plastic waste into sustainable construction called “NEWBitumen”, which can be used to pave eco-roads. “NEWBitumen” was also used in paving the driveway of DBS Newton Green, Singapore’s 1st Zero building by a bank.

Visiting and photographing i Light (Singapore / Marina Bay) journeys since 2010 had been an interesting visual storytelling journey for me with my camera, capturing the growth, changes, not just in Marina Bay Singapore, on the areas of sustainability and recycling and artworks depicting those key areas that the world is looking at, and having a stronger and more urgent emphasis in this current climate.

I hope that i Light Singapore 2023 can Ignite Your Spark on A New Wave inside you in the areas of sustainability, sustainable living and habits in our daily life and work.

Malay Heritage Centre x Very Small Exhibition support World Mental Health Day

My maiden encounter with Very Small Exhibition light artworks was at the Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) in October 2021. MHC has collaborated with VSE to light up the facade of its main building in different hues of blue in support of World Mental Health Day on 10th October, while MHC’s annex buildings are lighted up with the art collective’s signature neon colour lights.

Bring LOVE Everywhere by Very Small Exhibition

After my maiden encounter with VSE at MHC, I got more interested in their colourful artworks and roaming exhibitions. I was alerted to this Bring LOVE Everywhere movement by Very Small Exhibition by Belinda. Artist Wei was on a trial walk to bring his interactive light artwork/exhibition Bring LOVE Everywhere from Mountbatten to Changi Village via East Coast Park and Changi Coastal Route.

Belinda and myself decided to head down to East Coast Park White Jetty to catch Bring LOVE Everywhere in action, pushing from Mountbatten to East Coast Park for his first pit-stop. We had a fun time doing light painting with the colourful LOVE artworks. 

From our conversation with artist Wei at that time, this was part of his much bigger LOVE walk project with this Bring LOVE Everywhere artwork around Singapore. This is something that I would be sharing more in the later paragraphs below.

Very Small Exhibition presents Very Momentary Exhibition 2.9 

Prior to Bring LOVE Everywhere major announcement, Very Small Exhibition presents Very Momentary Exhibition 2.9. 

On 20th November 2021, from 7pm to 10pm at Block 312A Clementi Ave 4, Very Small Exhibition presents Very Momentary Exhibition 2.9. This 40 storey block stairway was lighted up beautifully, a shining beacon of colourful light artworks that can be viewed from far. 

I live in the extended Clementi neighbourhood sector, it’s not far at all from my home and I decided to visit and support Very Momentary Exhibition 2.9. Belinda joined me that day, there were also other supporters of VSE there too, some were following him along the stairway, others were watching his Very Momentary Exhibition 2.9 from below or from the nearby buildings beside 312A Clementi Avenue 4. 

Belinda and myself also followed along artist Wei as he was producing his colourful artworks from the top floor to the middle level of the block before heading down to capture the full colourful spectrum of the Very Momentary Exhibition 2.9 across the block.

That was my first hands experience of how his light artworks had captured our eyes, heart, mind and soul in our heartlands neighbourhood. This was like a beautiful rainbow in the night, a beacon of hope and love shining for us.

Bring LOVE Everywhere around Singapore

Coming soon in January 2022, VSE is taking its Bring LOVE Everywhere around Singapore! From 23rd January 2022 to 28th January 2022, VSE would go on a round island Singapore walk with  its Bring LOVE Everywhere interactive artwork. Check out the map on Bring LOVE Everywhere Instagram account for more details on the route. 

They would arrive at the Clementi region on the 5th night (27th January 2022). Since this is my neighbourhood, I would make time to go down and support. Having went down to support artist Wei’s trial walk at East Coast Park, I am looking forward to seeing this interactive artwork again!

Pay-It-Forward and Pass-It-On

As a photographer myself, I would like to support creative artists from other creative disciplines whenever possible. From my days of covering i Light Marina Bay and Singapore Night Festival, I met a few local creative artists, some are modern contemporary artists while some are more of traditional artists. 

Being an artist or in the creative fields can be pretty tough, this ongoing global pandemic situation makes it even tougher for them. As a photographer that sometimes overlaps into the creative and artistic side of things, I am able to relate to this.

Therefore, I would do my best to Pay-It-Forward and Pass-It-On, to help other creative artists from other disciplines whenever possible.

The ongoing global pandemic has severely disrupted our daily life and work, as well as our mental, emotional and financial well-being. In this unprecedented global crisis, we can all do with more love, kindness, compassion, solidarity and unity as we strive to get out of this crisis and return back to a more normal life before this pandemic. 

Through creative arts movement such as Bring LOVE Everywhere by Very Small Exhibition, let’s help to spread love and care around us, in our society and around the world.

Besides, the artworks, there are also other programmes and dinning options for for all visitors to i Light Marina Bay 2017! Let me highlight some of them, there will be three complementary themed festival hubs for visitors to this event. One of them is the The Fantastical World of eco.me at The Promonotory, they will be showcasing sustainability-themed activities such as recycling and upcycling marketplace, an urban garden, a learning yard, a kinetic energy playground, immersive performances and music from 3^rd to 5^th March and 9^th to 12^th March.

The other two hubs are Art-Zoo, an imaginative inflatable play-garden at The Float @ Marina Bay and Gastrobeats, where visitors to this event can sit down, enjoy the food and drinks selection available there and enjoy the music! There is something for everybody for the children to adults, it’s a great and meaningful event to bring your family and children down to Marina Bay and enjoy i Light Marina Bay 2017!

i Light Marina Bay is Asia’s leading sustainable light art festival, this year’s 2016 theme is “In Praise of Shadows” with 25 innovative and environmentally friendly light artwork installations installed and showcased around the Marina Bay area. For i Light Marina Bay 2016, the event has become bigger with more programs and festivities happening in the vincinity of Marina Bay, outdoor performances, workshops and outdoor dining options.

I started my i Light Marina Bay 2016 adventure from the Esplanade, walking down towards The Float @ Marina Bay, crossing the Helix Bridge to Art Science Museum, continuing towards Waterfront Promenade and Marina Bay City Gallery. Thereafter, I continued towards the Promontory @ Marina Bay before ending my adventure outside Fullerton Bay Hotel. It was a bit of a fast walk for me, to document, cover and photograph all 25 light artwork installations at i Light Marina Bay 2016 within a night from around 8pm to 11pm. However, I am still planning to go back and revisit some of the light artwork installations again, especially those that I want to photograph more in-depth, from a few different perspectives and angles. After that, I would share and upload them into my i Light Marina Bay 2016 photo collection on Flickr.

I had always been amazed, fascinated and attracted by the colourful bright lights from i Light Marina Bay festivals. Each edition brings out something different and special to me, that I can visit, enjoy the lightings and artworks. Through the different artists unique artworks, they do give me inspiration for my photography too! Let there be light and my photography flows along with it!

There are a few art installations that I really like a lot and I would recommend these few art installations at i Light Marina Bay for you all to visit! One of them is art installation B9 titled “Cloud”, with the Marina Bay and Raffles Place CBD skyline in her background, this makes an excellent photograph together with the art installation Cloud. During the evening, when the sun sets and the blue hour emerges, the art installation Cloud with the beautiful landscape background is one that dazzles visitors and photographers to wait for that moment!

Visit i Light Marina Bay 2014 and discover your favourite art installations! The lighting projection display on the Art Science Museum, art installation B14 titled “Celebration of Life” is another of my favourite and you can see many visitors watching from the Helix Bridge, at the Float @ Marina Bay and below the Art Science Museum itself! I photographed the “Celebration of Life” artwork installation from three different locations over two weekends and one of my favourite location is the Helix Bridge whereby I can have a view of artwork projection on the Art Science Museum with the Raffles Place CBD and Marina Bay in the background!

Themed Light+heART, the festival this year features 28 innovative and environmentally sustainable light art installations from around the world.

I started walking around the Marina Bay Waterfront, visiting the various artworks and lighting displays at i Light Marina Bay 2014 when it was officially opened on the 7th March 2014. The artworks and lighting displays were amazing and there were some particular lighting artworks that caught my eye and attention, they were my favourite lighting artworks displays.

Here’s some photography tips for shooting i Light Marina Bay !

– Wear comfortable clothing and shoes (it can be quite a bit of a fun walk)

– Stay hydrated and remember your water bottle

– Camera Remote Control (for long exposure shots and to avoid camera shake when pressing on your camera)

– Use the map and plan your shoot (don’t rush to cover all in one night!)

– Spread it over a few nights

– Use wide angle zoom and telephoto zoom (they will give a fresh and different perspective and composition)

– Explore different angles and locations to shoot each installation

I started my i Light Marina Bay light art festival 2012 photography walk on Saturday, 10th March, with the Marina Bay  Photo AmBAYassadors and we had a great time there with photography workshop, outing and outdoor light painting session! Currently, I covered 7 out of 31 lightings installations and I will continue to take and share my photojournalistic adventures of i Light Marina Bay 2012 ! With artists from all over the world, over 25 locations around the Marina Bay area, showcasing their artwork and designs. This festival makes it a fun time for all, locals and tourists alike, to enjoy the night landscape brighten by many different lights and designs, understanding the importance of sustainable energy and lighting.

Over this period from 15th October to 7th November 2010, open nightly from 7:30pm to 12mn, this festival promises to be a fun and enjoyable time for all to enjoy. With 25 locations, all around the Marina Bay district, it might be good to break down your i Light Marina Bay festival visit over a few nights because you would be able to enjoy the night sceneries of Marina Bay and you won’t need to rush all over the 25 locations.
