In today’s digital and social media world that we are living in, are we getting more “Caged”? Is this perhaps our most familiar state of reality? Do you feel that you need to “Uncage”? We are limited by the boundaries around us, whether they are self-imposed or social constructs, feeling “Caged”. Yet we are also searching for freedom, finding ourselves constantly drawn back to the trusted, safe, and familiar surroundings.
SKULLPANDA CAGE:UNCAGE Singapore is presented by POP MART, in collaboration with SKULLPANDA character creator, Chinese artist Xiong Miao, and in partnership with the National Museum of Singapore and the Singapore Tourism Board.

“I’m truly excited and honoured to present SKULLPANDA’s work outside of China for the first time through the immersive showcase SKULLPANDA CAGE–UNCAGE. Singapore, with its unique charm—balancing tradition with innovation, structure with creativity—is a truly fitting venue for an exhibition that explores the tension between contrasting ideas and perspectives,” said Chinese artist Xiong Miao, creator of the original SKULLPANDA character series.

SKULLPANDA CAGE:UNCAGE Singapore presents a visual journey through popular culture, that explores the tensions between containment and release that exist within our decisions. Through creative spatial design and unique visual language, this showcase is a space for visitors to contemplate, where they are invited to stand with SKULLPANDA, and confront how our choices are shaped by the multiple layers of our identity: as an individual, a part of a larger community, and more.

Exploring Contemporary Culture in Singapore

While the National Museum of Singapore presents shared narratives that shaped Singapore, the SKULLPANDA CAGE-UNCAGE Singapore presents a totally different approach, turning the visual storytelling lens inward, inviting visitors to discover and explore the personal choices, contradictions, and conflicts that shape their own stories and identities.

Through this form of self-reflective meditation, the National Museum of Singapore has created a space for introspection that allows one’s deeper understanding of self. This showcase also continues on the museum’s exploration of enduring appeal of contemporary collectible culture in Singapore, building upon its popular 2024 showcase Play:Date – Unlocking Cabinets of Play, that demonstrates how popular culture has resonated across generations.

These showcases present the museum’s commitment to examining contemporary Singapore culture through fresh perspectives and unique experiences, creating new pathways to engage diverse audiences.

Six Zones for you to Uncover the Complexities and Contradictions of your Choice

Based on the SKULLPANDA The Paradox Series, there are six thematic zones for you to uncover the complexities and contradictions of your different choices and aspects that you have to make in your everyday life. They are Emotion, Direction, Fortune, Rules, Life, and Exploration.

Spot the keys and locks at SKULLPANDA CAGE:UNCAGE Singapore, visual metaphors of our everyday life. Each zone presents an interactive and sensory experience that transforms abstract ideas into tangible reflections on life, inviting visitors to engage through touch, movement, and sound. Throughout your journey at SKULLPANDA CAGE:UNCAGE Singapore, you are encouraged to draw from your own lived experiences, and to physically connect with installations and sculptures, discovering the possibilities that lie within.

The Key

Begin your SKULLPANDA CAGE:UNCAGE Singapore experiential journey with The Key, where fragmented mirrors and keys invite you to reflect on the boundaries between reality and infinite possibilities.

Now, it’s time to continue on into the six sections:

Emotion: The lock and key are placed in opposition to each other, dissolving the conventional relationship. The SKULLPANDA’s signature astronaut helmet is reimagined as a floating sphere, catching the light, casting a shadow below. The interplay of light and dark, mirrors the tensions and harmony between perception and truth. Your emotional connections become visible through the threads of entangled lines.

Direction: Flip through the giant book, as the symbols unfold transparent book pages carrying images of imprisonment through thorns, shackles and webs. Unfolding page by page, presenting different paths to freedom, revealing how one might navigate through the obstacles and break free or they can find sanctuary within those constraints themselves.

The Room

At the heart of this showcase is The Room, combining all of the six thematic zones together. Inside this chamber of one-way mirrors, two SKULLPANDA sculpture sit back-to-back, with a key in each sculpture’s hand, symbolising the weight of constraint and hope of freedom.

Do you feel the paradox of perception? When you are outside, it’s recognisable. Once inside, you can see and feel the infinite maze of displaced reflections. You are both the observer and the one being observed, giving you the feel of being trapped in a prison within it yet you are also observing the prison.

Exclusive Highlights at SKULLPANDA CAGE:UNCAGE Singapore
There are exclusive highlights at this exclusive co-curated SKULLPANDA CAGE:UNCAGE Singapore, it pays homage to bird singing in Singapore. This is a beloved past time enjoyed in Singapore’s housing estate, a very much less-known aspect of Singapore life, that is introduced to international audiences.

Observe the suspended bird cages, they are home to the original prototype of figurines from the SKULLPANDA The Paradox Series. This artwork is accompanied by a specially created video artwork by Xiong Miao, featuring her signature butterfly emblem gliding past familiar local sights of Singapore.

From one popular local culture bird singing uniting bird singing enthusiasts, to another popular culture shown by the passion and dedication of contemporary culture collectible fans.

Coming from a more old school era of popular culture collector, it is exciting and fun to see how popular culture has grown, risen and established a new era of contemporary popular culture. SKULLPANDA CAGE:UNCAGE Singapore at the National Museum of Singapore is more than just an eye opener, this special showcase has shown how contemporary popular culture has grown in stature and perception, from the small cute plushies that you might hang on your bag, they can become a contemporary cultural exhibition with its own stories and themes that connect with people from all walks of life beyond contemporary popular culture.

This is going to be a Uniquely Singapore 2-in-1 performing arts tour and travel experience that you would be learning and enjoying during Katong Dreaming: A Musical Tour.

The story behind Katong Dreaming

Katong Dreaming: A Musical Tour is created by August Lum, Marc Nair, Nicodemus Tan, and Valerie Lim. Produced by Jamie Lee for Betel Box Tours, and supported by Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and National Arts Council (NAC) Performing Arts Pilot Grant. Both STB and NAC seek to encourage the development and trial of innovative performing arts tours by tour operators.

Let’s go on a Katong Dreaming Musical Tour!

Most locals and international visitors that know/heard of Katong, they would remember Katong and Joo Chiat districts for its colourful houses, sleepy streets, and of course, our favourite Singapore topic – food. However, it’s more than just that, how much do you know about the rich Peranakan history, culture and traditions that built up Katong and Joo Chiat districts?

When you embark on this 2-in-1 performing arts tour and travel adventure – Katong Dreaming Musical Tour, not only will you hear the stories of Katong and Joo Chiat districts as you walk through those two districts, admiring the architecture, colours and design of those old houses, you will also get to hear original songs, poems, and this movement set to an original score.

Without further ado, follow me below and let’s go on a Katong Dreaming Musical Tour!

First and foremost, it begins with Bak Chang

First and foremost, it begins with Bak Chang. When you sign up for Katong Dream: A Musical Tour, the start point is at Kim Choo Kueh Chang at 111 East Coast Road. If this is your first time visiting Kim Choo Kueh Chang, I strongly encourage you to check them out.

Once you finished your registration, collect your headset, listen to the administrative instructions, you are more than ready to embark on your unique 2-in-1 performing arts tour and travel adventure.

This is where you start your Katong Dreaming Musical Tour, it begins with Bak Chang. Somehow, you might be very relaxed, happily chatting with people or dreaming about Katong, that you won’t know the musical tour has started!

Do you know what is a Bak Chang, its history and origin? Listen to this “Bak Chang Beginnings”, written by Marc Nair, when you join the musical tour.

Next up, It also begins with the Sea

After knowing your Bak Chang, it’s time to move out and explore Katong and Joo Chiat. Next up, it also begins with the Sea. Just a short walk away from Kim Choo Kueh Chang, walking through traffic light cross junction, experiencing your first back lane experiences, you would reach this road lined up with a very unique architecture and design, they are elevated terrace houses.

The elevated terrace houses are what remain of how close Katong was to the sea. This might be your first time watching an outdoor performing arts tour. With your headphones on, listen and enjoy this outdoors arts performance play, “It Begins with the Sea”, written by Mark Nicodemus Tan, music by August Lum.

Do you remember cinematic Roxy Baby?

The older locals in Katong and Joo Chiat would remember the Roxy Cinema that once stood where Roxy Square is. An iconic and popular location with Katong and Joo Chiat residents, its history and heritage is not forgotten, written down in “Roxy Baby” by Marc Nair, with music by August Lum.

What is Under the Banyan Tree?

The Banyan Tree, to most people, is probably just another tree species from the diverse flora and fauna on Earth. Not many people I reckon would know about Banyan Tree and its connections to the spiritual side of things.

What is under the Banyan Tree at the Joo Chiat Place Parking Lot? They are home to a few deity worship, place inside nicely built wooden box houses, visited and maintained nicely by believers around the district.

Read in all three ways, watch and listen to the Grand Finale musical performance.

A Huge Round of Applause for Katong Dreaming: A Musical Tour

As the Katong Dreaming: A Musical Tour drew to a close at Betel Box, the performers and organisers received a huge round of applause from all of us that walked, immersed, listened, watched and become a part of this musical play walking journey.

We stayed back for a short while, chatting and congratulating the performers and organisers behind this musical tour. It’s not your usual musical play whereby you can mingle with the performers and organisers/crew straight after a musical play performance.

Katong Dreaming is Not your typical musical play

For me a visual storyteller that has been documenting and covering history, heritage, culture and arts, somehow I am not that into musical plays or theatre performances. When I embarked on Katong Dreaming musical tour, I was brought into another world, that is not utopian, like a Time Machine ride from the past when our forefathers first stepped foot into Singapore, into the modern Singapore cosmopolitan city of today.

Katong Dreaming brings you on a rich history, heritage, cultural and travelling tour of Katong district in Singapore through an immersive and powerful musical play through a walk around the Katong district. Through this musical play, you can have a deeper and wider understanding about Peranakan history, heritage and culture.

2. Singapore Zoo

Billed as the best rainforest zoo in the world, the Singapore Zoo is one attraction that can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages. The impressive zoo covers 28 hectares of space and is comprised of 11 zones, such as Frozen Tundra, Primate Kingdom, and Wild Africa.

Unlike other zoos, the Singapore Zoo prides itself in its “open concept”, where the animals are not locked in cages and are instead placed in individually landscaped enclosures. The zoo has over 4,000 different animals, including the biggest colony of orangutans in the world as well as an extremely rare white tiger.

3. Sentosa Island

The beach isn’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind when visiting Singapore but if you would like to enjoy some time under the sun, Sentosa Island is the perfect destination for you. This island resort is one of the most interesting areas in Singapore and is home to some fun attractions and entertainment spots. If you want some beach time or engage in water sports, you have three beaches to choose from – the Tanjong Beach, Siloso Beach, and Palawan Beach. If you want to watch incredible marine creatures in person, then the S.E.A. Aquarium is the place to go.

One of the major highlights at Sentosa is the Universal Studios Singapore, an amusement park arranged thematically, each of which is dedicated to a certain film, television show, or location. The theme park’s rides range from kid-friendly to daredevil; examples include Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure, Battlestar Galactica, Revenge of the Mummy, and Shrek’s Far Far Away.

4. Orchard Road

Almost every major metropolis in the world has its own commercial avenue; for Singapore, they have the Orchard Road. The area, which once served as an orchard of fruit trees, spans over two kilometers and boasts an abundance of restaurants, malls, cafés, hotels, clubs, art galleries, and other major establishments. It is also considered Singapore’s ultimate shopping destination, featuring both luxury brands as well as discount outlets.

5. National Museum of Singapore

The National Museum of Singapore is the island’s biggest museum and is one of the most important cultural institutions in the city. Formerly known as the Singapore History Museum, the facility underwent a $118 million renovation and rebranding job and has since become more cutting-edge and immersive.

The museum has two primary galleries – the first one is the Singapore History Gallery, which traces the island’s history from the 14th century until present day. The other gallery is the Singapore Living Galleries, which focuses on different lifestyle themes such as film, fashion, photography, and food. The facility also hosts a range of cultural events throughout the year, including art installations, film screenings, and festivals.

6. Clarke Quay

During the 19th century, Clarke Quay was the center of commerce in Singapore, and today, it remains one of the busiest commercial hubs in the city. Situated on the banks of the Singapore River, the area is a favorite hangout spot for both locals and tourists who want to spend a fun day of dining and entertainment by the waterfront.

7. Singapore Botanic Gardens

If you’re looking to experience actual nature while in the city, the Singapore Botanic Gardens is definitely worth a visit. Not to be confused with Gardens by the Bay, this 74-hectare green space was established in 1860 and has since been an oasis for those looking to get away from the busy city life.

The garden, which has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasts glassy lakes, lush greenery, and a range of themed gardens. One of the most renowned areas is the National Orchid Garden, which features the largest tropical orchid collection in the world with more than 1000 species and 2,000 hybrids.

8. Raffles Hotel Singapore

Located in Singapore’s Colonial District, the Raffles Hotel is not your ordinary hotel; apart from offering accommodations in the city, it also serves as a major landmark and is one of the few remaining 19th century hotels in the world.

Constructed in 1887, Raffles Hotel has been known to provide luxurious services for over a century and has once welcomed the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Joseph Conrad, and Rudyard Kipling.

Have you ever went for a local tour in Singapore? This might not be on the minds or thoughts of most Singaporeans during the pre-COVID days. When the global pandemic COVID-19 hit the world in 2020, bringing international leisure tourism and travel to a standstill. People around the world returned to domestic travel in their home country. This was probably something new and unheard of for Singapore with her small land size and not having a hinterland, local/domestic travel might not sound that attractive, some might ask, “Do we even have one?”. This ongoing global pandemic situation helps to change all that, Singapore adapted and we are now encouraging people to embark on SingapoRediscovers adventure. I went for one recently, the Black & White Houses Stroll with Jane’s Singapore Tours.

We started off from Hort Park, where I met our tour guide Shanti from Jane’s Singapore Tours, along with other tour participants. It’s a small tour group outing, making it friendly and cosy. Walking along Canterbury, Winchester, Russels, York, Royal, Cornwall and Berkshire Roads, admiring the beautiful Black & White Houses with their nice spacious gardens and listening to the given by Shanti, it seemed like I had traveled back in time.

It was a short two hours Black & White Houses tour, nevertheless, I learnt a lot from my very experienced and wonderful tour guide Shanti. She shared many interesting history lessons, architecture, culture and lifestyle associated with the Black & White Houses at Alexandra Park. I reckon I had a good exchange with Shanti and gained much more knowledge as we were walking around the Black & White Houses at Alexandra Park.

Let me pose you some questions of Black & White Houses at Alexandra Park:

Which SIT/HDB estate in Singapore has similar architecture/design to the ones at Alexandra Park?

The Black & White Houses at Alexandra Park were built for which British military camps nearby?

Which hospital is just round the corner from the Black & White Houses at Alexandra Park? What is the connection between these two places?

Have you seen/heard of a Black & White house on stilts in Singapore?

Even though I had some prior knowledge of the Black & White Houses at Alexandra Park and some of their history. Under the excellent and knowledgeable travel guidance of Shanti, I learnt a lot more in depth of the history, lifestyle, culture and stories of Alexandra Park. While you may choose to ask Google for answers or I might write a lengthy history tour article here, nothing beats going for a physical tour of the Black & White Houses at Alexandra Park with an experienced travel guide!

Due to this ongoing global pandemic, we are currently not able to travel overseas for our holidays. Since we can’t travel out, why not travel around, visit and explore places in our home country Singapore? This would give us the opportunity to learn and understand more of our local history, heritage, culture and tourist attractions. How much do we really know about our home country Singapore? Why not join a local tour from a wide selection of Jane’s Singapore Tours on offer and embark on your SingapoRedisovers tour?

Personally, I sincerely hope that more people would do their own SingapoRediscovers adventure, from rediscovering Singapore’s history, culture, arts, food, architecture, tourist destinations, nature, outdoors etc etc, there are well known places and also hidden gems in our small land size Singapore.

I had a fun, enriching and informative local tour of the Black & White Houses at Alexandra Park, I learnt so much more about the history, culture, architecture and real life stories behind them, an area that I am interested in since I have been documenting and photographing history, heritage and culture in Singapore over the past two decades.
