Specific Gravity x Lemuel Chocolate Bow & Arrow Ale

For beer and chocolate lovers, this innovative flavour is definitely something interesting and unique for them to look forward to! This special and unique Specific Gravity x Lemuel Chocolate Bow & Arrow Ale is a labour of love created as a collaboration by one of Singapore’s most respected and award-winning brewers and beans-to-bar craft chocolatiers Lemuel, for a limited edition offering.

SGBC was founded in 2021 by Devin Kimble and Kim Wong. Devin is the founder of Brewerkz, Singapore’s pioneering craft brewery, where Kim was the brewery manager for over 20 years.

Bean-to-bar chocolates are unique, handcrafted chocolates that are made from specially selected cocoa beans. Lemuel Chocolate carefully chooses beans that have full flavour and unique characteristics that will leave you wanting more.

The two craft pioneers in beer and chocolate combined after recognising a shared opportunity for a unique collaboration.

“At Lemuel Chocolate, we source and import quality cacao beans from cacao farmers and reputable cacao agents around the world,” said Lemuel co-founder Ronald Ng, who met business partner and Japanese national Hideki Sakanishito to ignite a life-long love and passion for chocolate. “Specific Gravity got in touch with us and we recognized there was an opportunity to create something really special.”

Craft beer outfit Specific Gravity are no newbies to collaboration on innovative flavours. The company has been racking up accolades, including a gold medal in the English-style IPA category at the Asia Beer Championships in Singapore and a bronze in the same category at Melbourne’s Australia International Beer Awards, one of the world’s largest beer-related competitions.

Bow & Arrow Chocolate Ale is brewed at a small facility in Singapore with cacao beans from Ecuador, roasted and processed locally by the artisans at Lemuel Chocolate. The ingredients include a hint of ginger, giving a spiciness to balance out the flavour profile.

Most chocolate beers are made in a Porter or Stout style where a lot of the chocolate flavour comes from the base of roasted malts. Bow & Arrow on the other hand is a tempting amber color that displays the character of the chocolate and lets it shine through. It is surprisingly easy drinking.

Take a close look at the packaging on the bottle of Bow & Arrow Chocolate Ale before you open your bottle to drink and enjoy. It is based on a Peranakan tile motif as are all of the SGBC labels, each with its particular characteristics. The judges at the Australian International Beer Awards thought so much of SGBC’s packaging they awarded it a gold medal and best in show plaque for their labels and 4-pack design.

As for the packing on the Lemuel chocolate bars, they are similarly unique. Each one is hand-wrapped with eco-friendly paper made from the leaves and pulp of the mango and banana trees.

Pricing and Availability

The gift packs and the beer by themselves are very limited in quantity. They are available exclusively at www.sgbevco.com.

Inside the gift packs, there are two Specific Gravity’s 330ml glasses, featuring a Vanda Miss Joaquim Orchid motif; a keychain bottle opener; some coasters with their lucky logo, which was based on a traditional Bagua like the Singapore dollar coin; and two bars of delicious single-origin chocolate.

The retail price for the gift packs is $55.55. For beer only packs, the retail price is $32 for a 4-pack.

This fabulous idea was conceived by  Kim Wong of the Specific Gravity Beverage Company and Greg Brown, Assistant Brewer at Lion Brewery over one afternoon. They hit upon this fabulous idea to fulfil two of their greatest passions: brewing great beer and helping out their four-legged friends.

Here’s how the Unleash The Love story unfolds

Greg mentioned he loved the Vienna Malt grain variety; Kim happened to have some in stock. And so the plan was unleashed: why don’t they make a Limited Edition batch of Vienna Lager and use the spent grain to make dog biscuits? They approached dog treat company The Barkery, which produces delicious and nutritious biscuits and meatloaves for our canine companions, and they suggested adding lean minced pork and a touch of cinnamon to the mix.

Hey presto, Porkies was born. The beer wasn’t bad either.

A fruity, lightly hopped beer that’s great for Singapore’s tropical climate, Vienna Lager is an amber-reddish Austrian beer variety that closely resembles the Marzen style of Munch, Bavaria. Not to cut the fun short, Kim and Greg contacted other colleagues in their industry to create an Instagram campaign with the aim of raising money for dog charities.

Both SGBC and Thirty Six Smokehouse & Brewlab will donate $1 for each unique Instagram photo of someone enjoying our Unleashed Vienna Lager with their pet – or the owner with their dog enjoying Porkies.

All for a Good Cause

Proceeds will go to two animal welfare organisations: SOSD (Save Our Street Dogs), a volunteer-run organization dedicated to the welfare of Singapore’s many street animals (donations to www.giving.sg/campaigns/unleashthelovesg_sosd) and Causes For Animals (Singapore), a charity set up to support the needs of local animal welfare promoting best practice, ethical, sustainable and compassionate treatment of animals (donations to www.giving.sg/campaigns/unleashthelovesg_cas)

Not to be left out of the party, The Barkery will donate 20% per cent to charity for each purchase of 100 grams of Porkies from their shop in Joo Chiat Road and LINO at Binjai Park will donate $1 for each bottle sold.

The fundraising goal is to reach $1000 for Save Our Street Dogs and Causes For Animals (Singapore).

“Vienna Lager ticks all the boxes for us,” said Kim Wong of the Specific Gravity Beverage Company. “We love beer and we love dogs. How great is it that we can make one and help the other? We hope it will give our beer-drinking friends paws for thought.”

Said Greg Brown of Lion Brewery: “I think this idea certainly deserves a pat on the back. Not only are we making beer and helping dogs, it’s also a great way for us to remain sustainable and give something back to the community.”
