Take a nostalgic walk back in time at this special exhibition “Packaging Matters” at National Museum of Singapore, into the world of food and its packaging in Singapore, in the era of the early bottling and canning factories in the late 19th to early 20th centuries, to the light industries of the 1960s to 1970s when the factories in Singapore manufactured food.

Upon entering into Stamford Gallery, it was like stepping into a time machine that brought me back in time when I was a young kid in the 80s, I spotted a number of familiar food packagings, boxes and designs that I grew up with. The feeling was nostalgic and heartwarming, thugging the inner emotions inside me, the beautiful (and naughty) eating memories when I was a carefree kid, just wanting to eat the biscuits from Khong Guan, having a cold Yeo’s soya bean drink bottled inside the glass bottle, sprinkling milo powder with Milkmaid condensed milk on the bread made by my big auntie, secretly stealing chocolate from the Van Houten Choco-Almonds box and craving for the elusive McDonald’s burger.

Those were the fun eating days of my early childhood, amazing memories without internet and technology. Something uniquely Singaporean that people from my generation and earlier that would definitely be able to relate to them dearly and close to their heart, mind and soul.

If you are in your 40s and above, you would be able to connect with quite a number of the packaging matters exhibition at National Museum of Singapore. The older you are, the more memories you would have inside this wonderful exhibition, that celebrates the history, heritage and culture of Singapore’s food manufacturing and related industries.

There are three main sectors inside Packaging Matters Exhibition at Stamford Gallery, with the Heritage & Design section being the most nostalgic and heart thugging. Behind this section, there are the Family Corner and Sustainability Area. More photographs of Packaging Matters Exhibition at National Museum of Singapore can be viewed inside this flickr photo album!

The Family Corner is ideal for family bonding activities, grandparents or parents can share with their children on the history, heritage and culture of the food and food packaging in Singapore that they grew up with. Young children (recommended for 5 to 10 years old) can also participate in fun and interesting activities with the Children’s Activity Booklet at the Family Corner, helping them to learn more and interact with the exhibition. This would be a great time for extended family bonding!

At the Sustainability Area, this would be an ideal time and setting to spread the word and awareness of the consequenes of throwing away non-biodegradable packaging waste in the modern world today. It’s not just children can learn about recycling and long-term environmental sustainability, we adults can learn from this too!

Vintage and retro flea markets have been one of my favourite places to visit, you never know what kind of treasures and interesting items that you can find at these markets. From my various travels overseas in the last two decades to different countries and studying in Australia, I always have a fun time visiting such vintage and retro flea markets.

Back home in Singapore, I was introduced to Katong Square Lifestyle & Vintage Market organised by The Retro Factory (maybe Q4 2016 or Q1 2017?) and I made new friends who are part of the community there! I also covered and published articles on The Katong Square Lifestyle & Vintage Market, that is held on the second weekend of the month, do note it down on your calendar! Whenever I visit Katong Square Lifestyle & Vintage Market, I always look around for “new arrivals”, look what I got from one of my visits!

Over a period of time, chatting and hanging out with like-minded retro, vintage and lifestyle flea market friends at Katong Square Lifestyle & Vintage Market, I got to know about Carpmael Street Bazaar. The Carpmael Street Bazaar by The Retro Factory is Singapore’s First Antique Centre Concept Bazaar with Individual Collectors coming together to present Retro, Vintage & Antique Treasures to the vintage, retro, heritage, conservation and preservation enthusiasts in Singapore.

Here’s a sneak preview of Carpmael Street Bazaar, they are opening very soon in the month of March 2019! An Antique Centre Atelier by Vintage Flea Market by The Retro Factory.

This is produced by Hong Peng from Hpility SG, a joint production with me playing a very minor part in this short film video!

Being a heritage, vintage and retro enthusiast/supporter myself, I always love flea markets and the regular retro flea market that I always visit is the Katong Square Lifestyle & Vintage Market by Vintage Flea Market by the Retro Factory! If you love arts, craft and lifestyle products, you can discover some of them there too!

The markets at Katong Square are held every second weekend of the month, the October 2018 edition is taking place from Friday 12th October to Sunday 14th October, 2pm – 10pm (Friday) and 1pm – 10pm (Saturday and Sunday).

What’s the story behind this retro glass hip flask in leather case?

I had been covering and supporting Katong Square Lifestyle & Vintage Market for a period of time, visiting this market always bring me new surprises because there are something new for me to “dig out and discover” whenever I am there!

From my previous posts on my photoblog and Instagram, I have been building up an interest in whisky and food photography pairing themes. When I found out that the Vintage Flea Market brought in different types of whisky flasks, I was excited and it took me around 2 editions (2 months) looking at them as well as waiting for new “stock” to arrive for the market!

In the September 2018 edition, I finally found my whisky flask! They would be playing a part in my whisky and food pairing and whisky with a view photography shoots!

This is just one stories of my retro find at Katong Square Lifestyle & Flea Market, I am still “hunting” for more retro items that would suit my food pairing and photography setup!

If you are a heritage, vintage and retro enthusiast/supporter like myself, do drop by and visit Katong Square Lifestyle & Flea Market! You never know what you can find there!

On the second weekend of the month, there is a flea market that I would like to share with everyone of you here. They specialise in vintage, retro, historical and nostalgia items that have quite a long history behind them. From vinyl discs, watches, books, jewellery, hats etc etc. It is usually held at Katong Square, in the the past few months, they have received more visitors to their vintage flea market and they have also expanded to other events/locations such as Singapore Heritage Festival 2017 at Caldecott Hill and most recently at Turf City.

I had been visiting and covering the vintage flea market by The Retro Factory at Katong Square for the past few months. There’s always something different being displayed at the flea market, I would take the opportunity to take a look around the various stalls and try to spot a treasure/retro item that I really like. There are a few items in mind, that I am planning to get it, sometime down the road!

The vintage flea market by The Retro Factory reminded me of my uni days in Australia (from studying in Brisbane, to visiting Sydney and Melbourne) when I would regularly visit and discover various flea markets in the cities and outskirts/nearby smaller cities. Some of the flea markets are vintage markets, some are artwork and modern living. There is something for everybody to explore and enjoy when they are visiting the flea markets.

I found and bought something!

Most of my readers/followers here would know of my history and connection with the Scouting movement, I still have a lot of Scouting items and memorabilia when I was with the Gan Eng Seng Dragon Scout Group. One of the items that I still kept was my whistle that I owned and used during my Scouting days. This was an item that I treasured, during a visit to one of the vintage flea markets, I found a whistle from the 1940s and I was mesmerised by the vintage whistle. After some consideration, I decided that I wanted to own this whistle and replace it on my lanyard that accompanied me during my Scouting days!

In my personal humble opinion, I feel that Singapore has the market and potential to grow its own flea market. While it might take a bit of time, with increasing awareness on the topics of history, heritage, conservation and preservation, the vintage flea market in Singapore can grow and expand in the very near future.
