The World Press Photo 2018 – Singapore Exhibition was officially launched on 5^th October 2018 by Ms Chang Hwee Nee, CEO of the National Heritage Board at the National Museum of Singapore.

Looking back, I can still remember visiting and covering World Press Photo Exhibitions in Singapore starting from

• World Press Photo 2013 – Singapore Exhibition (Year 2014)
• World Press Photo 2014 – Singapore Exhibition (Year 2015)
• World Press Photo 2015 – Singapore Exhibition (Year 2016)
• World Press Photo 2016 – Singapore Exhibition (Year 2017)

Visiting and viewing the “Oscars of Photojournalism” over the years from 2014 till this year 2018, the photographs gave me many insights into what had been happening around the world today, from news, to environmental, nature, sports, culture, society. All the photographs on display at World Press Photo 2018 Exhibition tells the world many news and stories that they might never see or heard of.

As I returned back to World Press Photo 2018 – Singapore Exhibition, the photographs never fail to tell me stories and news of situations and realities taking place in different parts of the world. During the official opening event, I decided to immerse myself into the photographs on display, viewing, reading and understanding each photographer’s works, perspectives and purpose behind each photograph or set of photographs.

My photography style and practice were never formally trained or certified by an  academic institution. I learned through reading and following the photography and writing style of National Geographic Magazine. There is why I can relate to long term and personal photography projects on display at World Press Photo Exhibitions.

Canon, a worldwide partner of World Press Photo, has been supporting WPP over the last 26 years. On one of the boards, there was this sentence/quote, “At Canon, we believe in the power of stories.”. This had what I had been actively practicing (for the past 14 years and still counting), using my photography to tell stories with my Canon photography gears.

Visiting World Press Photo Exhibition is not just for photographers or journalists, it’s for everybody in the world to know more, understand and realise what is happening in other parts of the world. I strongly and highly encourage each and everyone of you to visit World Press Photo 2018 – Singapore Exhibition!

The World Press Photo exhibition is currently on a global tour across 100 cities in 45 countries. At this exhibition, visitors can view 145 prize-winning photographs that captured the most powerful, poignant, and sometimes provocative press images from around the world.

The 2016 global contest drew more than 82,000 submissions from 5,775 photographers across 128 countries. Of these, the jury awarded prizes to 41 photographers from 21 countries, including Australia, China and Japan.

There are guided tours every Saturday and Sunday, 10am & 12.30pm. At the World Press Photo Exhibition Singapore, it’s also featuring a partner exhibition by The Straits Times showcasing its best photojournalism work of 2016 which illustrates the richness of life in Singapore.

There will also be a panel discussion and free talks open to the general public by the award-winning and internationally acclaimed photographers from the World Press Photo exhibition and photojournalists from The Straits Times. For more information and details, do visit the Straits Times website.

I visited World Press Photo Exhibitions in Singapore when their exhibitions were here in the years 2014, 2015 and 2016. I encouraged everyone of you to visit the World Press Photo Exhibition in Singapore, it’s not just for photographers, journalists, their photographs show us many different aspects, life and happenings around the world that we may not see or know about it.

World Press Photo 2015, the Singapore Exhibition is held for the first time at the National Museum of Singapore from 29^th January to 21^st February. The photographs are exhibited at The Concourse (Level 1) and The Canyon (Basement 1).

I wasn’t able to attend the official opening event of the World Press Photo 2015 Singapore Exhibition due to a clash of schedule. However, I am always keen on the works of the various talented photojournalists in their respective fields of coverage, I went down to visit the World Press Photo 2015 Singapore Exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore. This is the fifth year that the World Press Photo Exhibition is held in Singapore, previous ones were held in the years 2002, 2006, 2014 and 2015. I visited and covered World Press Photo Singapore Exhibitions in the years 2014 and 2015. It had always been an eye-opener for me and my craft of photography. While I am not a news agency photojournalist, the photojournalism works from the Oscars of photojournalism, the World Press Photo Exhibition always inspire me to pursue my own field of photojournalism, in the fields of long term photography projects.

There is also a exhibition by the Straits Times, held in conjunction with World Press Photo exhibition. The Straits Times exhibition pays tribute to the power of the visual image through its showcase of their best photojournalism works of 2015.

When I visited World Press Photo 2015 Singapore Exhibition, I walked and viewed the photographs slowly, absorbing and understanding what was going through the thoughts, mind, heart and eyes of the different photojournalists when they are pursuing their projects, topics, themes and the images that they managed to produce. Through my own photography observations and viewing of the photographs, I am also learning and improving my own photography proficiency level.

The World Press Photo 2015 Singapore Exhibition, held at the National Museum of Singapore, is definitely worth a visit. Through the 145 photographs on display, we are able to see and know more about the things happening around in our world today, from the nice and beautiful daily life stories, to nature photography and sometimes provocative stories, the visitors can reflect, learn and know more about the world today.

The winning shots were selected from 98,671 photographs submitted to the contest by 5,754 photographers from 132 different nationalities. The shortlisted photographs are presented in a yearlong exhibition touring more than 100 cities in over 45 countries. World Press Photo Exhibition started in 1955 and billed as the “Oscars” of photojournalism. The photographs were definitely of the highest quality and standards.

At the official opening ceremony of World Press Photo 2014 Singapore, I recalled attending World Press Photo 2013 Singapore, my first time attending World Press Photo Singapore. It was an eye opener and at World Press Photo 2014 Singapore, it was great to see the powerful and high levels of photojournalism around the world and the issues that the photojournalists covered. Award winning photojournalists at World Press Photo 2014 Singapore opening ceremony shared their stories and experiences on stage. it was a real eye-opener and humbling to hear from them, the passionate photojournalists on their commitments and ground work, to bring their visual stories and photographs to the rest of the world.

While I am not in the field of news/press/issues photojournalism, I followed and embraced photojournalism as my style of photography in covering events, travel and my personal projects on heritage, history, conservation and preservation.

The photojournalists were the best storytellers with their powerful, emotional and impactful photographs. Their works, style, passion and eye for photojournalism are great for me to learn and improve my own photojournalism style, how I want to tell and share my stories with my photographs. When I embark on my travel adventures or my heritage and conservation photojournalism projects, I can improve and produce a higher level of photojournalism works.

I always like to go and visit photography exhibitions by local or international photographers and World Press Photo is about inspiring understanding of the world through quality photojournalism. It was indeed very inspiring and definitely an eye-opener for fellow photographers whether you are an amateur or professional photographer. The photographs on display at World Press Photo 13 in Singapore tell many stories in other parts of the world, a photograph definitely speaks a thousand words.

For me, I learned my photography through the eyes and words of National Geographic Magazine, where my style of photojournalism, coverage and writing was heavily influenced by them. As I walked through the World Press Photo 2013 Exhibition in Singapore, held at Raffles Hotel, maybe my photo stories someday can make a difference too and let the world knows and understand about themselves better. Viewing the exhibited photographs at World Press Photo 2013, it’s a good time to learn, view and feel from the eyes and hearts of the talented photojournalists around the world.

The World Press Photo 2013 Exhibition in Singapore is definitely worth your time to visit and be mesmerised by the powerful photojournalism photographs that tell you stories far and beyond. If you a photographer, fan of photography or a photojournalist, this is definitely a Must Visit for you!
