Looking back in time on my Canon photography journeys and coverage, I published and shared on Canon’s EOS series milestones, with these two articles, Canon’s 70 million EOS-series cameras in 2014 and 90 million EOS-series cameras in 2017. In 2019, this marked another milestone for me too, the 100 million EOS-series cameras as well as my continued coverage of Canon’s cameras, lenses and accessories over the years.

My photography adventures, journeys and coverage with Canon had brought and given me a few significant milestones in my life and photography, opening up new opportunities and networks too. Canon has always been “Delighting You Always”, living up to their slogan that has been a part of their DNA, seen, touched and felt, through their cameras, lenses, accessories, prints and customer service.

As Canon celebrates 100million EOS-series cameras, let me share with you on their EOS-series cameras history and insights:

Canon today celebrated a camera-manufacturing milestone as combined production of the Company’s EOS-series silver halide (film) and digital interchangeable-lens cameras surpassed 100 million units1 on 20 September 2019. An EOS R (released in October 2018) mirrorless camera was the 100 millionth EOS-series camera produced.

An acronym of Electro Optical System, EOS is also the name of the goddess of the dawn in Greek mythology. Boasting an attractive product lineup that caters to a variety of user needs and an extensive series of EF lenses, with which Canon strives to expand the boundaries of imaging expression, the EOS series has supported a great many users over its long history, and enabled Canon to maintain the No. 1 share of the global interchangeable-lens digital camera market for 16 consecutive years from 2003 to 20182.

The EOS series began with the EOS 650 (released in March 1987), a next-generation AF single-lens reflex (SLR) camera featuring the world’s first fully electronic lens mount. Production of the EOS series began in what was then Canon’s Fukushima plant and now takes place at a variety of locations—including Taiwan, Miyazaki, Nagasaki and the lynchpin Oita Canon—where production is carried out under stringent product quality management. Following the release of the EOS 650, Canon continued to introduce products featuring innovative technology that realise speed and comfort—such as the highend EOS-1 (released in 1989) and the EOS Kiss (released in 1993)—expanding the EOS series to cater to users ranging from amateur to professional.

From the year 2000 onwards as the pace of digital SLRs (DSLR) adoption picked up, Canon sought to create even more appealing products. The EOS series’ core concept was expanded to include “high image quality,” achieved through such proprietary, cutting-edge technology as CMOS sensors and DIGIC image processors. In 2003, Canon released the EOS Kiss—a compact, lightweight DSLR with an affordable price—which contributed to the wider adoption of interchangeable-lens digital cameras. Through the EOS 5D series, which contributed to the use of interchangeable-lens cameras for video capture, and the establishment of the Cinema EOS System of professional digital cinematography products in 2012, Canon extended its video technology to the B to B sphere as it entered the video production industry. Canon will continue to explore new approaches with the EOS series, such as the 2018 launch of the EOS R System, which employs the new RF Mount.

Expanding from its beginnings in still photos to the realm of video, the EOS series has come to support a wide range of users, from entry-level to professional. Canon will continue to pursue “speed, comfort and high image quality” as the core concept of the EOS series, further strengthening and expanding the EOS System towards expanding the culture of photographic and video imaging.

In this current photography and digital camera world, with the rise and increasing ownership in mirrorless digital interchangeable lens (DILC) cameras, I am still a strong advocate and supporter of the digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras while I am still searching for my elusive mirrorless DILC camera.

The opportunity to change and upgrade to the Canon EOS 1DX Mark II came when I chanced upon it at the regular camera shop that I had been patronising for the past more than 10 years and still counting, it was a second hand set, the price was reasonable. I gave a shoutout on my Facebook Page with a poll whether I should buy the Canon EOS 1DX Mark II and a fellow photographer friend was keen to take over my Canon EOS 1DX with a price offer. After some short discussions and coordination between selling off my Canon EOS 1DX and buying over Canon EOS 1DX Mark II, the Canon EOS 1DX Mark II came into my setup with the Canon EOS 1DX (sold to my photographer friend) and Canon EOS 1D Mark III (to be sold away) cameras being released from my setup.

Although there were many times when carrying this huge workhorse Canon EOS 1D series DSLR camera gave me shoulder and neck aches during my photography assignments, it had always been and it is currently still is, my highly trusted and reliable workhorse camera for my professional photography usage (until I get another backup camera that is smaller in size!) There is an aura, something special with the Canon EOS 1 series: “There is no turning back!”

I had been a part of this journey, starting with my first DSLR, the Canon EOS 300D in 2004, followed by Canon EOS 30D, Canon EOS 1D Mark III, Canon EOS 70D and currently using Canon EOS 1DX. This slogan by Canon, “Delighting You Always”, can be found in their Canon interchangeable-lens camera eco-system, from the sensors to their quality interchangeable lenses. Along this personal Canon journey of mine, I had the opportunity to review a number of different Canon cameras and lenses too.

My journey with Canon interchangeable-lens digital cameras had been pretty exciting on a personal basis, growing from amateur to freelance/semi-professional and running my own small photography business. If you would like to know more, do check out my archives for my various Canon stories, reviews!

Here’s a short write up of Canon’s journey in the interchangeable-lens digital camera market:

In 2003, the dawn of digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS Kiss Digital (EOS Digital Rebel or EOS 300D Digital in other regions). This groundbreaking camera, which was competitively priced and featured a compact, lightweight design, captured the top share of the global market and set the stage for growth in the digital SLR market. Since that time, Canon has continued to launch a range of groundbreaking products, including the professional-model EOS-1D series and the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for digital SLR video recording. The Company has further bolstered the EOS lineup by continuing to introduce new products including accessories, interchangeable lenses and the EOS M series of compact-system cameras. During 2017, Canon introduced the EOS 6D Mark II as part of an impressive lineup of interchangeable-lens camera products[1] that supported the Company’s achievement of a 15th consecutive year at the top of the global market.

What does the future holds for Canon in the interchangeable-lens digital camera market?

Canon will continue to refine its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technology, combining still-image, video and network capabilities to expand and create an even stronger EOS System that meets the needs of increasingly diverse users to promote the spread of photo and video culture. What’s more, thanks to advances in imaging technology, Canon is opening up new expressive avenues, where texture, three-dimensionality and a sense of realism can be recreated in both still images and videos, to support appealing imaging experiences.

That was the beginning of some very exciting and interesting photography adventures and journeys. The 1D Mark III was my workhorse camera, pushing it to the limits in sports, events and wildlife photography. On 18^th October 2011, I still remember this day when I witnessed the announcement of the Canon EOS 1DX. When it was launched, I was blown away again, I told myself, I hope to own it one day in the future. I also had a great opportunity to review the Canon EOS 1DX, at the end of it, I was convinced this is the DSLR camera that I really wanted. Although I can’t afford it during that time, I always wanted it inside my heart.

Even though mirrorless cameras made quite a bit of headways into the camera markets over the years, in my personal humble opinion, they were still unable to take over and replace the role of the DSLR camera in my own particular photography adventures and journeys.

As time flies, the rumours came flying in during the year 2015, on a new Canon EOS 1DX Mark II. Therefore, I started saving my money for about 1/1/2 years from late 2014 till February 2016. My plan was to own a second hand Canon EOD 1DX eventually. The Canon EOS 1DX Mark II was announced and this was a real beauty, a powerful monster camera! It would be really awesome to own the latest Canon EOS 1DX Mark II, however, with budget constraints and prudent planning. I decided to opt for a used Canon EOS 1DX (It’s still just as good for my usage!)

I began to start looking around for people selling off their Canon EOS 1DX, there weren’t many of them to start off with also. Some of their prices weren’t attractive and it took them a while to go down even with the announcement of the Canon EOS 1DX Mark II. I continued waiting and searching for that 1DX that meets my price and requirements. I wasn’t sure when I would be getting it, I just waited. The omens and signs were beckoning towards the arrival of the 1DX, at the most recent Canon Seminar 2016 on 16^th April, I collected some free gifts, a Canon PhotoMarathon 2014 polo tee that has a 1DX printed on it and somehow, I was lucky to get a 1DX camera strap!

On a Wednesday 20^th April evening, I was tipped off by a fellow photographer friend that he was going to buy a second hand 1DX and the seller has a friend that was also selling a 1DX too! The price was within my limits and it came with some free gifts too! Some quick liaisons and I was on my way to take over the Canon EOS 1DX on the next day, Thursday night. A very special Thursday 21^st April night for 4 photographers, 2 that sold away their 1DX sets, 2 of us that took over them.

A new 2nd hand to take over the old 2nd hand. The handing over of an era for me. The wait was worth it and it took me approximately 1/1/2 years to save up for this new 2nd hand investment.

Thank you very much, my Canon EOS 1D Mark III, thank you for your service, hard work, sweat and battle scars. You have served me very well over the past 5 years and 5 months from November 2010. It’s time to retire you and let you go.

Now let me introduce the Canon EOS 1DX, that is taking over the workhorse DSLR role for my photography adventures and journeys ahead.
