Saturday 10th February 2024, let’s welcome the Year of the Dragon! First and foremost, wishing all a Happy Chinese Lunar New Year 2024! To my followers and readers of my TGH Photography and Travel portal/blog, thank you for your support for my of my photography, travel, arts, creative, heritage, history and culture news coverage and writing.

Working on securing photography business deals for TGH Photography, creating visual stories / content creation for TGH Photography and Travel portal/blog. The month of January 2024 and first week of February 2024 were kind of hectic and busy as I was also working to get my writing and content creation up some gears and pace, clearing backlogs and working on key interest topics for Year 2024 for my TGH Technology and Business portal/blog.

I want to start off Year 2024 on the right note and on a good foundation. A different set of uncertainties and challenges are looming ahead in 2024, along with geo-political risks, the route ahead might be rocky and challenging, yet it might bring some opportunities too.

However during the past few weeks, there were also other matters that brought me back down to reality, on the topics of family ties and close friends around us. I just want to say family and health comes first. Whatever judgements, noise and arguments taking place on social media or against you, we have to block them out, let it go and carry on with life, on what really matters to us, beyond capitalism, status, wealth, saving face and narcissism.

For this Chinese Lunar New Year 2024, enjoy your Lunar New Year festivities, gatherings and eating, a long weekend holiday, a short travel holiday away, or visiting family and relatives back in your home country. Have a good festive break before we return to the daily grind action.

Wishing all a Happy Chinese Lunar New Year 2024, wishing you good health, abundance in prosperity, wealth and relationships with family, relatives and friends. Have a good long weekend, catching up with family, relatives and friends, feasting and eating Chinese New Year goodies and snacks.

This global pandemic has caused a lot of disruptions, impacts and changes to our work, daily living, emotional and mental health. Lunar New Year 2022 doesn’t feel the same, it’s quiet and subdued due to the safety measures/restrictions in place. Let’s take this time to cherish our family and loved ones, as well as with our relatives and friends.

Take a walk down Singapore’s memory lane through nostalgia and beautiful stories from Yesteryear by Yip Yew Chong. With an amazing collection of 30 canvas paintings/sketches of Yew Chong’s imagination of old Singapore, walking through this Stories from Yesteryear exhibition is going to bring you lots of nostalgia and memories especially for those who lived and went through the growing up years, undergoing the huge metamorphosis together with Singapore into a modern cosmopolitan city today.

Every canvas paintings/sketches tell a unique and special story, from Yew Chong’s personal growing up years or from stories that was shared with him. Some of the canvas paintings had very touching and amazing stories that were shared personally by Yew Chong. You never know how art therapy combined with nostalgia artworks can help a person in opening up to others.

I visited Stories from Yesteryear on 22nd February 2021, the last day of their exhibition at Substation. They would be heading to Sofitel Singapore City Centre next, starting on 26th February 2021 to 31st March 2021.

There were a few paintings at this exhibition that touched my heartstrings more than others. I would vigorously deny that I am old or getting old, I am just middle-aged, alright? Some of the paintings that touched me more, Jalan Singapura 2, 1 and 4, Trengganu Street Market, Mid-Autumn Night and Kallang.

I highly recommend you to visit Stories from Yesteryear by Yip Yew Chong, perfect for families with children. Grandparents and parents can bring their young children to go for an artistic journey back in time on the growing up years, what life in Singapore was like a few decades back. At the exhibition, do not rush from one painting to the other, read the short description on the side of the painting, observe the intricate details on the paintings. From here onwards, you would be able to discover and appreciate a lot more of Singapore in the older days and the transformations she went through to the modern cityscape of today.

This was a wonderful and nostalgia visit to Stories from Yesteryear exhibition by Yip Yew Chong, it was also inspiring for my personal photography in the heritage and documentary genres, while I can’t paint as beautifully like our talented artist Yew Chong, cross interdisciplinary learning from other creatives would help me in photographing and capturing our existing heritage and culture in a modern cosmopolitan city.

The Chinese Lunar New Year festive season at the start of every new year is arriving soon, in a few weeks time, we would be welcoming Chinese New Year on 5th February 2019, the first day of Chinese New Year 2019. In Singapore, things are in place at Chinatown, preparing to welcome the Year of the Pig with lots of events, festivities, activities and celebrations.

The Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2019 is organised by the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng Citizens’ Consultative Committee (KA-KS CCC) and supported by the Singapore Tourism Board. On 20th January 2019, it would be the official light up and opening ceremony for Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2019 in Singapore.

The theme for this year’s Chinatown is “Celebration of Abundance and Prosperity” and there are many events and activities for the extended families to come together and celebrate this Chinese New Year festive season together. This is the Year of the Pig, they are a symbol of wealth and good luck, normally associated with abundance. Three key themes for the Year of the Pig festive celebrations at Chinatown are “Wealth, Celebration and Knowledge”, they would be showcased through various elements through the props and displays.

The traditional festive street bazaar held at Chinatown is an iconic feature, many people visit the street bazaar for Chinese New Year goodies purchases and international tourists visiting the festive street bazaar, getting a feel of the Chinese New Year atmosphere and ambience.

One of the key highlights that I like about Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations is the Chinatown Street Light Up. Since this is the Year of the Pig, this year’s street light up is pig-themed handcrafted lanterns, designed in collaboration with students from the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) for the eighth year. There are a total of 2,688 lanterns, bright, colourful, pig lanterns, gold coin lanterns, flower lanterns, red lanterns, yellow lanterns, decorating and lighting up Chinatown during this Chinatown Chinese New Year 2019 festive season.

Do keep a lookout for the main Chinese New Year lantern centrepiece at the junction of Eu Tong Sen Street and Upper Cross Street. They are a family of 8 pig lanterns! This centrepiece pig lanterns display has received interesting reviews and comments from both sides! Therefore, you cannot miss them and please visit this lantern centrepiece at the junction of Eu Tong Sen Street and Upper Cross Street. Personally, I kind of find this centrepiece pig lanterns to be pretty cute looking pigs!

The Mid-Autumn Festival 2018 is back to Chinatown in Singapore, starting on Saturday 8th September 2018 with its official street light-up and opening ceremony! A month of great fun, activities and celebrations would then take place in the Chinatown district, welcoming visitors, Singaporeans and tourists of all ages to come down, soak in this festive season, enjoy and have great fun, a perfect time to learn more about Chinese traditions and heritage and to encourage more people especially the youth to learn more about them too!

Earlier in the week, I went for the media preview session organised by Kreta Ayer – Kim Seng Citizens’ Consultative Committee. During the session, we were informed on the key highlights of this year’s 2018 Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival and I would be sharing some key information and details here!

The theme for Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival 2018 is “Our Chinatown. Our Mid-Autumn” (“我们的牛车水, 我们的中秋节”). Visitors to this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival are able to feel, go back in time and reminisce the scenes and life experiences of the Singapore’s Chinatown in the 50s and 60s. This wonderful festival is a great festival and event to encourage more people, especially for the youth to learn more about Chinese traditions and heritage, the lives of their forefathers when they first arrive in Singapore.

The street lanterns in the form of traditional accordion paper lanterns, showcasing centrepieces of early Chinese immigrants, are nice and beautiful, along the streets of Chinatown, you have to stop, take a look and admire them! There would also be nightly stage shows with exciting dragon dance performances on weekends, mass lantern walk (great for the kids and our international visitors!)

There is a new night event for this year’s Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival 2018, that is the “Singapore Culture and Heritage Trail – Cantonese Chapter: Reliving the yesteryears once more”.This is a two nights event, it’s about food! They are bringing back traditional Cantonese cuisine and street food commonly found in the 1950s and 1960s. More than 10 popular Cantonese delicacies with traditional dishes which are quite difficult to come by today, such as the “Gold Coin Chicken” (金钱鸡) and “Prawn Toast” (虾多士)!

There are other street activities taking place, such as fortune telling, face threading, Chinese calligraphy, Cantonese costume photo boothand opera will surely delight visitors. Out of the programmes lined-up, many of which are supported by WeCare PALs; PA’s network of corporate and community partners such as International Left-Hand Calligraphy Association, Kong Chow Wui Koon, Kowloon Club and The Wedding Chamber. Besides immersing in the Cantonese culture, visitors can also be part of history by joining in for a record breaking feat of the most number of oriental masks to be worn at the same time.

Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival 2018 will officially kick start on Saturday 8th September 2018 with the Official Light-up and Opening Ceremony (开幕典礼与亮灯仪式), graced by Guest-of-Honour, Mdm Halimah Yacob, President of the Republic of Singapore.

Dr Lily Neo (梁莉莉医生), Adviser to Jalan Besar GRC GRO (KRETA AYER–KIM SENG) (惹兰勿刹集选区基层组织顾问(牛车水–金声)) said, “Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the two key Chinatown Festivals that bear rich Chinese traditions and heritage. It is important for us to continue preserving and passing down our traditions and heritage from generation to generation. This year Mid-Autumn Festival tells the story of Chinatown where it reminisces the early days of our forefathers coming to Singapore in search of a better life and how they have contributed in many ways to our nation building. They have also brought along their culture, traditions and festivals while they settled down their roots here. We hope that through this festive celebration, it will remind us of our own history and culture while we continue to build on the strong foundation laid by our forefathers to bring Singapore to greater heights.”

“The Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations bring to life the heritage, character, and beauty of Chinatown, delighting visitors and Singaporeans year after year. The festivities also play a key role in bringing together the local community to foster a deeper appreciation of the rich Chinatown heritage,” said Ms Serene Tan, Director, Arts and Cultural Precincts, Singapore Tourism Board.

Knife sharpening as an art form, a form of professional service provision. Have you heard of them before in Singapore ? Do you know of their presence here in Singapore ? Personally, I didn’t know about knife sharpening professional service although I can relate to the art of knife sharpening because of my Boy Scout and Venture Scouting days.

It was with great honour that I was invited by National Heritage Board (NHB) to follow along with them in their Heritage in Episodes projects. My exploration, documentation and photographing of Old Places in Singapore led me to discover, learn and share more about heritage, history, conservation and preservation topics in Singapore. The art and culture of traditional trades and businesses soon became part of my interest with the knife sharpening profession that I went along to photograph and documented, a part of a dying professional trade in Singapore.

Along with the staff from National Heritage Board, reporters from Straits Times and Lianhe ZaoBao. We visited People’s Park Complex, tucked away at a corner on the second floor, there was a unit where we learnt the art, history and profession of knife sharpening. We were greeted by Mdm Lee, who was very kind, humble and friendly, whom was more than happy to share with us her stories, how she got started in knife sharpening, her experiences and memories over her knife sharpening business. Mdm Lee’s knife sharpening caters to hairstylists, seamstress, hawkers and homemakers, with her business trade spanning over 40 years. Mdm Lee was very well liked by her customers whom many were loyal return customers. When customers went to her shop and picked up their goods, they shared their wonderful and thoughts about Mdm Lee’s knife sharpening business. The testimonials by her customers are a testament of her professionalism and enthusiasm in her knife sharpening profession.

The dilemma and challenges facing Mdm Lee today is succession and passing on of the knife sharpening trade/skills/business. The art and profession of knife sharpening may not be able to carried on into the future generations of Singapore. With the coverage and publicity by National Heritage Board, local press stories and history enthusiasts like myself, we hoped that Mdm Lee would be able to Pass-It-On her art and skill of knife sharpening. Do check out both our local newspapers Straits Times and Lianhe ZaoBao wrote excellent in-depth detailed reports of Mdm Lee and her knife sharpening business.

There were a few things that I was able to struck a chord deeply with Mdm Lee’s knife sharpening, that is the art and skill of knife sharpening. I would not be able to know the operations and business management of a knife sharpening trade/business, however, I knew how Mdm Lee felt when she was sharpening the knifes on the grinder and honing stone. This was because I was once a Boy Scout and Venture Scout, I had to learn the skills of sharpening my small swiss army knifes, dagger, parang (machette) and axe. Mdm Lee’s grinder was machine/motor operated while the grinder that I learned was manual turning with one hand while the other hand held my knife/parang/axe. When I saw how Mdm Lee sharpening the knifes on the sharpening/honing stone slab, splashing water on the stone slab and knife while sharpening, these actions brought me back many memories to my Scouting days, it’s exactly the same skill and actions!

I had a great chat with Mdm Lee, sharing with her how I used/sharpened my knife, parang and axe (Those were the rugged outdoor adventure days) during my Scouting days. It was fated that I was able to meet a professional knife sharpener and able to share together why we sharpen our knifes for our various purposes, for Mdm Lee, a professional service provision, for me, my Scouting outdoor adventure! If you ever need a skillful professional to sharpen your knifes, scissors etc etc, you can find Mdm Lee at People’s Park Food Complex, #02-1040! Let’s help to spread the awareness of a knife sharpening art and profession in Singapore and we might find this traditional knife sharpening trade and business can be Pass-It-On!

I would like to say a Big Thank You to National Heritage Board and Madam Lee for giving me this opportunity to photograph, document and share the story of knife sharpening.
