First and foremost, initial setup after unboxing

First and foremost, Canon PIXMA G670 users would need to get the initial setup done properly. Once completed and connected, printing is quite a breeze. I strongly recommend all to read and follow the instructions on the booklet or from the online manual whichever format you prefer. 

You need to setup the printer heads first before going to the ink tanks next. Follow the instructions  and you would be fine.

The PIXMA G670 uses refillable bottles of ink, some users may not be too familiar with them yet. Thus, the setup of the PIXMA G670 printer heads might look a bit daunting for a first timer using bottles of refillable ink. 

Here’s a tip, don’t rush the setup, one ink bottle at a time. Fill up the ink tanks one by one, each ink tank has its own unique nozzle design and ink tank position, align them properly and you won’t make any mistakes. Once the ink tank bottle is in position, the ink would flow down and fill the ink tank compartment up. 

Repeat the process one ink tank bottle at one time, remember there are 6 ink tank bottles for you to fill up. 

Connectivity and Canon printing apps

Once the printer heads and ink tanks are setup, the next step is to connect the PIXMA G670 printer to your local Wi-Fi networks. Follow the instructions in the user manual provided or from the online manual. The setup might be a little bit tedious, however once the printer is connected to your local Wi-Fi networks, printing is a breeze with the Canon printing apps. 

I strongly recommend users to download the Canon printing apps for ease of use and connectivity with the Canon printers. As for myself, I have the following apps, Canon PRINT, Canon Message Print, Canon Mini Print, Canon Easy-PhotoPrinter Editor and Canon Creative Park apps on my Apple iPhone 12 and iPad Air 3. 

The Canon PRINT app would be very helpful for you to use with the PIXMA G670 photo printer. The app is easy to use and navigate, it’s a breeze when using the app to print your photographs or documents. 

Tips on using the PIXMA G670 photo printer

• Remember to choose your correct print media type and size before printing
• Curate and select your photographs that you would like to print into folders first, that would save you time having to search all over the place for the photos that you would like to print

Printing photographs 

During this Canon PIXMA G670 printer review period, I was supplied the following photo paper types and sizes for printing, 4R Photo Paper Plus Glossy II, A4 Photo Paper Plus Glossy II and Magnetic Photo Paper PS-508. I printed a mix of colour photo prints and black & white photo prints across all three types of paper media provided. 

Colour Photo Prints

I printed a number of different photography genres, the colour photos were nice, it’s accurate and vivid. My views are that the red, blue and green colours pops up vividly, printing on Canon Photo Paper Glossy II paper helps to push out the vivid colours too. 

Black & White Photo (B&W) Prints

As for B&W photo prints, it was pretty good overall for a home/leisure/SOHO photo printer. My personal opinion is that Canon professional series printers still has the edge over them for B&W photo prints, based from my feel and viewing, on the quality of B&W photo prints that I did previously.  

Overall, comparing to my personal colour printing as well as B&W photo printing experiences with Canon professional printers since I own a Canon PIXMA Pro-10 photo printer, the colour and B&W photo prints from the PIXMA G670 are getting close. 

Magnetic Photo Paper PS-508

One of the various Canon photo paper media available for printing, the magnetic photo paper is basically a 4R size glossy photo paper with a magnetic back. Such creative photo media makes printing fun and easy to do at home. 

Print / Scan / Copy

The PIXMA G670 is more than just a photo printer for the home, it’s also a home leisure usage printer as well as small office home office (SOHO) printer or a small printer for your business operations. 

Print

For home/leisure/SOHO/small business users, when you need to print documents e.g. school work for your children, office work documents, having a printer like the PIXMA G670 photo printer can do the job for you without having a need to travel to your office or asking others for help to print documents for you. 

Printing a Zine 

For creatives, writers, printing a zine is a creative project that we can do it in the comfort of our home with a home printer such as the PIXMA G670 printer. Although this printer doesn’t support duplex printing, you still can do it manually though, printing one page at a time, flip over and print the second page. 

Scan 

The scanner function is good for document scanning, sometimes we have to scan documents due to the nature of our work/studies. 

However this is not a dedicated photograph scanner, I tested the scanning on a few old photos of mine, the scanned results were decent, not as sharp and accurate. 

Thoughts and Views

The PIXMA G670 printer is a multi-purpose 3-in-1 photography and home printer. This printer is catered for photography and creative enthusiasts who wish to print more photographs or do creative media works in the comfort of their home/SOHO/small office setup. 

This printer is just as ideal for home usage, small office home office, it’s pretty compact and not too big in size. It’s also ideal for small business owners, students and family with children.

For photography enthusiasts, I reckon that you would like the vivid colours from the photo prints, as well as the B&W photo prints too.

You can print photo gifts for your family, loved ones, relatives and friends, from different Canon print paper  media such as magnetic photo paper, to 4R to A4 print paper sizes. Although we are living in a digital media world whereby we are viewing a lot of photos online and on social media platforms, when you print out as a photo print gift, they would like it a lot, holding and viewing a physical photography print artwork.

In the course of my PIXMA G670 printer review, I printed a number of my favourite photography works and priceless memories with different group of family, relatives and friends. When I gave them my photography prints as gifts, I was very happy to see my photography works being appreciated. Their happy and delighted faces of my family, relatives and friends when they received my photography prints never fail to brighten me up too!

Class-leading Printing Innovations and Enhancements 

Both the imagePROGRAF PRO-300 and PIXMA PRO-200 feature a footprint that is 15% smaller than their predecessors, the Canon PIXMA PRO-10 and PRO-100 respectively. The addition of a 3- inch colour LCD screen on both printers also enhances usability, making it easy to monitor remaining ink levels as well as perform setup and manage settings without having to use a computer. Users can even purchase replacement ink cartridges through a QR code that is displayed on the LCD screen. 

A new Auto Skew Correction feature on both printers uses a built-in mechanism to ensure that the paper being fed into the printer is always aligned and that there are no printing errors. All this is automated, with the feature working with all types of paper, including thick and large papers. 

The imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is also equipped with an automatic nozzle compensation feature that reduces banding and streaks in photo prints. By detecting ink nozzles that are not discharging ink during the printing process, the printer will automatically compensate by deploying the surrounding nozzles. 

Compatibility with New Canon Premium Fine Art Rough and Other Media 

Canon has also released a new Premium Fine Art Rough (FA-RG1) paper, designed to push the limits of photographic and artistic expression on the PIXMA PRO-200 and imagePROGRAF PRO- 300. This heavy, textured cotton-based paper is particularly suited for portraits and fine art reproduction. 

Seamless Workflow with Bundled Software Applications 

To ensure a seamless integration with professional print workflows, and in particular Canon EOS system cameras, the PIXMA PRO-200 and imagePROGRAF PRO-300 are bundled with the Canon Professional Print & Layout (PPL) software. This powerful programme provides an intuitive interface, making it easy for users to optimise layout and colour settings for single or multiple print jobs, ensuring a superior user experience beginning from image capture, to post-editing, and eventually the print result. 

Together with Canon’s Media Configuration Tool, imaging professionals can also manage colour profiles for Canon and third-party media with ease, ensuring the re-use of custom settings for similar print jobs quickly.

In the months of January and February 2015, the progress was pretty alright from the two articles that I wrote down and shared with my supporters and readers. My work in progress and producing my draft photo book, they were key milestones, timeline and crucial learning experiences in producing my own photo book. The journey was a bit of ups and downs, frustrations, dilemma, which photos to curate, what’s the flow and placement like etc etc. Meeting and chatting with photographer friends helped me to reach my mid way point of producing and printing my draft photo book that defines my own personal and unique photojournalist style.

A very talented fellow photographer, Zinkie Aw, she introduced to me this particular printer, that a group of photographers in Singapore worked closely with. That printer is Grenadier Press Pte Ltd and after the email introduction by Zinkie, I went down and had a chat with them on printing my personal Hokkaido Black and White Landscapes Photo Book. They are very friendly, professional and very knowledgable in the printing line. There is one X-factor that stands out, that is they understand photographers and knows what photographers want. During my first appointment with them, I had a chance to view some of the photo books printed by Grenadier Press for some of the established and well known photographers in Singapore. From that day, I know my photo book printing is in good and experienced hands!

They are willing to share and guide me, this newbie in printing photo books. I confessed that I made some stupid newbie mistakes and the folks from Grenadier Press helped me a lot to get it right for my photo book print when I met them for my second appointment to submit my draft photo book layout/write up/photos in for printing. That is something that I am very grateful and thankful for, their guidance and priceless assistance in getting my first photo book printed!

After I submitted draft photo book layout/write up/photos in for printing, Grenadier Press took over the process. Since I wasn’t rushing for the photo books to be printed, we had a good time frame that both parties can work on. Once they got the final final draft up, I made an appointment to go down for the final confirmation of my photo book prints, inspected each photo book page proof, signed and acknowledged. That was the moment, the final lap of my photo book printing adventure.

Finally, a message arrived from Grenadier Press, my photo books are ready! Yes, I have produced my FIRST Photo Book! My personal Hokkaido Black and White Landscapes Photo Book. As much as I wanted to rush down and collect my photo books, my work commitments did not allow me to and I waited for about a week plus before collecting them.

The moments, feelings and emotions when I collected my photo books from Grenadier Press, it’s a mixed bag comprising all of the above. I was proud yet humbled, happy beyond words when I collected 50 of my photo books, they are my very own photography style and artwork. It’s not perfect, there is definitely room for improvement in terms of producing my next photo book. The support and encouragement from friends were great, I am very grateful and thankful for their continuous support!

I heard about the Canon PIXMA Pro-10 printer and its capabilities, however, with the mindset and trends of modern digital photography, we were busier sharing photographs instantly and then storing the rest in our laptops/desktops/storage systems. Printing was indeed lost and most recently, some photographers are starting to share their views and concerns on printing photographs or else we lose them to the digital Dark Age.

Let me first share with you, my readers, on the Canon PIXMA Pro-10 printer. The Canon PIXMA Pro-10 printer is a high speed and high performance printer that is able to produce professional quality A3 prints in the comfort of your home. It contains improved technologies such as the Chroma Optimiser and Lucia ink, packed inside the PIXMA Pro-10 to produce professional quality prints. The PIXMA Pro-10 uses a 10-ink pigment based system to achieve smooth tonal gradations and colours that meet the needs, demands and standards of a professional photographer.

For black and white photography lovers, the PIXMA Pro-10 will definitely be suitable for your needs (in my personal humble opinion). With this system of the Chroma Optimiser and three different monochromatic inks, the blacks are denser, reduced bronzing, enhancing glossing, thus producing sharp and high quality prints.

The PIXMA Pro-10 also use Canon’s FINE (Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) technology, which results in finely-detailed printouts with resolutions of up to 4800 x 2400 dpi at minimum ink droplet sizes of 4 and 3 picolitres respectively. The Optimum Image Generating (OIG) system mixes different coloured inks to an optimum level. The OIG system works by analysing the intended colour, and determines the optimal combination of colors by balancing factors such as tonal gradations, black density, graininess, and glossiness. The PRO Mode included in the PIXMA PRO-10 improves accuracy from screen to print. This provides ideal screen parameters to adjust the color gamut of monitors to match the exact color range of the printers. PRO Mode is ideal for users less familiar with ICC Profile Perception. The Print Studio Pro software is a plugin that optimizes fast and efficient printing on the PIXMA Pro-10 printer, eliminating complicated processes, resulting in fast and easy workflow (Information: Canon Media Press Release).

I used the following types of photography paper during my review of the Canon PIXMA Pro-10 printer

20 x Photo Paper Pro Luster – A3

20 x Photo Paper Pro Premium Matte – A3

20 x Photo Paper Pro Platinum – A4

20 x Photo Paper Plus Semi-gloss – 4R

I would like to give the Photo Paper Pro Luster a special mention. This paper is a semi-gloss paper that holds colours consistently under display lighting. This makes the Pro Luster paper ideal for studio exhibitions and special events. I love my prints produced by the Photo Paper Pro Luster using the Canon PIXMA Pro-10 printer! The Canon PIXMA Pro-10 printer produces excellent quality prints, vibrant, sharp and accurate in colours. The Pro Luster prints dry pretty fast too!

With regards to costing, the price of a Canon PIXMA Pro-10 cartridge is $21.90 (from Canon website) total cost would be $219 for all 10 cartridges inside the PIXMA Pro-10 (prices correct at time of writing this article). Prices of various photo paper types and sizes can also be found on Canon website.

During my printing journey with the PIXMA Pro-10, I had a fun yet challenging time with this wonderful printer. There is no issue on the print quality, the sharpness and colours! It’s about selecting which photo paper to be suitable for your photographs. I shared with my fellow photography friends on this finding and it probably takes time to learn and know more about the different types of photo paper available and which photo paper would suit your style of photography works.

The Canon PIXMA Pro-10 printer is suitable for photographers to print from the comfort of their home, from the small 4R prints to A3 prints, you would be able to print your own photographs on demand and also for your own photography exhibition at home or in places such as a studio or gallery! I personally feel that it is a worthy investment for professional photographers and serious enthusiast/semi-professional photographers to have the Canon PIXMA Pro-10 printer with them in their home or office.

This experience was something that I haven’t experienced for a long time, since I stopped shooting film that might be around 1999 to 2000. With the proliferation and expansion of everything digital, DSLRs, digital compact cameras, mirror less cameras and smartphones. Photography was getting easier and less expensive for people to enter and take photographs. This experience was both good and bad for the photography community.

When photography goes digital, along with the exponential growth and expansion of the Internet and social media. Photography changed to be instant and electrifying fast paced. Besides that, a lot more photographs were taken and many photographs were probably stored in your hard disk drive somewhere, whether it is desktop, laptop, and portable or home/work station. Now, our photographs are even stored in the Cloud system. Having said that, I am part of this trend and it does come to a point when there is a bit of stagnation from over proliferation of photography, yet there is a need to change and adapt in this modern era. We all probably are guilty of taking too many photographs, and storing them somewhere in our various photography devices.

Photography faces the crunch and test of instant gratification on the social media channels, the ruthless demands of instant updates and happenings. At times, I am wondering how many photographers face burnt out from such demands and expectations? When the photographs were uploaded on social media channels, where would they be after a while? Lost in Internet World Wide Web? Or in your Facebook, Twitter accounts?

After printing out the 4R photographs, I went on to prepare my draft Hokkaido B&W Landscapes Photo Book and printed it out via iPhoto. I can’t describe the experiences and euphoria that I felt when I held my draft photo book on my hands. The feelings and experiences were even higher than holding on to my 4R photographs. Finally, I was able to experience and felt why my photographer friends loved to print their photo books and continue to produce more outstand photo books showcasing their brilliant works.

While I was preparing my Hokkaido B&W Photo Book, I was also planning a personal photography exhibition with A3 photo prints. I managed to obtain from Canon Singapore, the PIXMA Pro-10 printer for a review and to print out my A3 photographs while planning how I can go about doing my photography exhibition. This post was also partially written as a pre-cursor to the upcoming Canon PIXMA Pro-10 review.

I loved my recent print outs, from 4R, A4 size photo book, A4 size photo prints and A3 size photo prints. Let’s go back to the days of printing film, like printing a 36 roll of film and apply it towards our digital photography lifestyle today.

Let it be 4R size, A4 size or A3 size photographs. Be selective, curate and print your photographs, share them around, show it to your family, relatives and friends, hang it on your walls, give it away as gifts or if there is a buyer, make that transaction!

I hope we can start to encourage each other to start printing photographs again!
