In today’s digital and social media world that we are living in, are we getting more “Caged”? Is this perhaps our most familiar state of reality? Do you feel that you need to “Uncage”? We are limited by the boundaries around us, whether they are self-imposed or social constructs, feeling “Caged”. Yet we are also searching for freedom, finding ourselves constantly drawn back to the trusted, safe, and familiar surroundings.
SKULLPANDA CAGE:UNCAGE Singapore is presented by POP MART, in collaboration with SKULLPANDA character creator, Chinese artist Xiong Miao, and in partnership with the National Museum of Singapore and the Singapore Tourism Board.

“I’m truly excited and honoured to present SKULLPANDA’s work outside of China for the first time through the immersive showcase SKULLPANDA CAGE–UNCAGE. Singapore, with its unique charm—balancing tradition with innovation, structure with creativity—is a truly fitting venue for an exhibition that explores the tension between contrasting ideas and perspectives,” said Chinese artist Xiong Miao, creator of the original SKULLPANDA character series.

SKULLPANDA CAGE:UNCAGE Singapore presents a visual journey through popular culture, that explores the tensions between containment and release that exist within our decisions. Through creative spatial design and unique visual language, this showcase is a space for visitors to contemplate, where they are invited to stand with SKULLPANDA, and confront how our choices are shaped by the multiple layers of our identity: as an individual, a part of a larger community, and more.

Exploring Contemporary Culture in Singapore

While the National Museum of Singapore presents shared narratives that shaped Singapore, the SKULLPANDA CAGE-UNCAGE Singapore presents a totally different approach, turning the visual storytelling lens inward, inviting visitors to discover and explore the personal choices, contradictions, and conflicts that shape their own stories and identities.

Through this form of self-reflective meditation, the National Museum of Singapore has created a space for introspection that allows one’s deeper understanding of self. This showcase also continues on the museum’s exploration of enduring appeal of contemporary collectible culture in Singapore, building upon its popular 2024 showcase Play:Date – Unlocking Cabinets of Play, that demonstrates how popular culture has resonated across generations.

These showcases present the museum’s commitment to examining contemporary Singapore culture through fresh perspectives and unique experiences, creating new pathways to engage diverse audiences.

Six Zones for you to Uncover the Complexities and Contradictions of your Choice

Based on the SKULLPANDA The Paradox Series, there are six thematic zones for you to uncover the complexities and contradictions of your different choices and aspects that you have to make in your everyday life. They are Emotion, Direction, Fortune, Rules, Life, and Exploration.

Spot the keys and locks at SKULLPANDA CAGE:UNCAGE Singapore, visual metaphors of our everyday life. Each zone presents an interactive and sensory experience that transforms abstract ideas into tangible reflections on life, inviting visitors to engage through touch, movement, and sound. Throughout your journey at SKULLPANDA CAGE:UNCAGE Singapore, you are encouraged to draw from your own lived experiences, and to physically connect with installations and sculptures, discovering the possibilities that lie within.

The Key

Begin your SKULLPANDA CAGE:UNCAGE Singapore experiential journey with The Key, where fragmented mirrors and keys invite you to reflect on the boundaries between reality and infinite possibilities.

Now, it’s time to continue on into the six sections:

Emotion: The lock and key are placed in opposition to each other, dissolving the conventional relationship. The SKULLPANDA’s signature astronaut helmet is reimagined as a floating sphere, catching the light, casting a shadow below. The interplay of light and dark, mirrors the tensions and harmony between perception and truth. Your emotional connections become visible through the threads of entangled lines.

Direction: Flip through the giant book, as the symbols unfold transparent book pages carrying images of imprisonment through thorns, shackles and webs. Unfolding page by page, presenting different paths to freedom, revealing how one might navigate through the obstacles and break free or they can find sanctuary within those constraints themselves.

The Room

At the heart of this showcase is The Room, combining all of the six thematic zones together. Inside this chamber of one-way mirrors, two SKULLPANDA sculpture sit back-to-back, with a key in each sculpture’s hand, symbolising the weight of constraint and hope of freedom.

Do you feel the paradox of perception? When you are outside, it’s recognisable. Once inside, you can see and feel the infinite maze of displaced reflections. You are both the observer and the one being observed, giving you the feel of being trapped in a prison within it yet you are also observing the prison.

There are exclusive highlights at this exclusive co-curated SKULLPANDA CAGE:UNCAGE Singapore, it pays homage to bird singing in Singapore. This is a beloved past time enjoyed in Singapore’s housing estate, a very much less-known aspect of Singapore life, that is introduced to international audiences.

Observe the suspended bird cages, they are home to the original prototype of figurines from the SKULLPANDA The Paradox Series. This artwork is accompanied by a specially created video artwork by Xiong Miao, featuring her signature butterfly emblem gliding past familiar local sights of Singapore.

From one popular local culture bird singing uniting bird singing enthusiasts, to another popular culture shown by the passion and dedication of contemporary culture collectible fans.

AFASG25 is organised by SOZO, supported by Singapore Tourism Board, it’s held in Singapore!

“It’s amazing to see how far AFA has come since our very first event back in 2008. What started as a small celebration of Japanese pop culture has now grown into one of the biggest and longest running events of its kind in Asia. J-pop and anime culture have become mainstream as well. Today, anime events are happening almost every weekend somewhere in Southeast Asia. Over the years, the community surrounding AFA has also evolved. It’s no longer just Japanese inspired – we’ve seen local creators and talents turn that inspiration into world-class content,” said Mr. Shawn Chin, Founder & Managing Director of SOZO Pte Ltd and Festival Director of AFA Singapore 2025.

Singapore Night Festival 2022 is back! WIth a fitting theme for Singapore Night Festival (SGNightFest) 2022, “Rebirth”, SGNightFest 2022 makes a rebirth and return in its 13th edition after a two years hiatus due to the global pandemic situation. An iconic and favourite, arts, cultural and heritage festival in Singapore that grew and transformed over the 12 years, making it Singapore’s very own uniquely contemporary and vibrant arts, cultural and heritage festival.

Having followed, supported, photographed and documented SGNightFest since her birth in 2008, it felt really good to see the rebirth of SGNightFest in 2022, making a comeback from the global pandemic situation that disrupted and turned our daily living, social and communal life, upside down.

There is an extensive and diverse line-up of programmes, activities, performances for visitors to SGNightFest 2022 that they can enjoy and have fun, with their family and friends. From Projection Mapping to Night Lights (two of my favourites at SGNightFest), to performances, experiential programmes and many other interesting events, there is something for you to participate, visit and involve with at SGNightFest. Of course, how can we forget F&B to relax, unwind and refuel after a night out at SGNightFest?

There is a 2 years gap in between our 12th and 13th edition. Therefore before you make a return to SGNightFest 2022, let me share with you some handy tips on visiting SGNightFest 2022, a good refresher for all of us, eagerly wanting to return back to our fun and exciting festivals again.

Handy (Refresher) Tips on Visiting SGNightFest 2022

Research and plan in advance on how you want to walk and explore the Bras Basah.Bugis precinct, which artworks/performances to visit first.

It’s alright to split your SGNightFest visits over a few nights.

Get a physical printed copy of the SGNightFest map or you can also view it from your smartphone/tablet from the SGNightFest website.

Night Lights / Project Mapping – you can visit on weekday nights too, don’t need to rush catching it on the weekends!

Performances – They are held on the weekends, you might need not be able to attend and watch all of the performances, that’s where you have to decide and choose.

Wear comfortable attire and shoes – You are going to walk a lot in our typical Singapore humid weather.

Stay hydrated – Bring your water bottle, drink up regularly and stay hydrated while walking around.

Stay safe – We are not totally out of the woods yet in our battle against this ongoing global pandemic. Stay safe, be mindful and be careful!

End your SGNightFest with food and drinks at After Dark @ Dhoby Ghaut Green and GR.iD

Last but not least, enjoy and have fun at SGNightFest 2022! Share and hashtag #SGNightFest and #SNG2022 on your social media channels!

Projection Mapping

Projection mapping artworks on facades of various buildings have always been a strong attraction and eye opener for visitors to SGNightFest. I would share with you selected photos of those artworks projection mapping, inviting you to visit in person, getting a feel of the projections, learning and understanding more about the stories and inspirations behind the artists artworks projection mapping.

Viewing city and urban landscapes in a new and different light through the eyes, heart, soul and lens of Wing Chan’s photomontage. Introducing IMPROVISE/3.0 Wing Chan Photomontage Exhibition at SHOUT Gallery Singapore, when I visited this exhibition, I was brought into another world on how we can view daily city and urban landscapes of ordinary people living in their own country, through the lens of Wing Chan.

As a photographer myself, I would always take the opportunity to immerse myself into the photographer’s views and perspectives, the styles and approaches adopted by them that can be seen through their photography works on display. Modern city living around the world today is fast and furious, uniquely complex and intricate in its own ways for the city itself, sometimes they can be pretty complex for locals as well as people from other parts of the world to fully understand. Through Wing Chan Photomontage works, we can view the true fabric of the city, the intimate connection between the people and the city environment.

Urban-Tapestry

If you are into travel and street photography like me, you would like Wing Chan Urban-Tapestry series. The shopping malls, subway platforms, like everyday city living, might sound mundane and boring to some. Yet this Urban-Tapestry series would show you city living and routine in a very different light and perspective.

That’s art, soul and rhythm in an organised boring chaotic city living, that we might not see it,. Maybe we are too engrossed living inside this inner city circle that sometimes we take it for granted.

Urban-Graphis

Wing Chan creates his form of optical poetry that can be very interesting, bold, colourful and abstract, challenging viewers to interpret the themes and messages behind his artworks. Some works look like scrapbook journal artwork entries, while some had pretty interesting photographs montage.

Intriguing and abstract, it takes a while for me to understand, while some artworks might be too abstract for me to understand. That’s the beauty of such forms of artworks.

View it up close and personal

I would encourage you to make a visit to IMPROVISE/3.0 Wing Chan Photomontage Exhibition at SHOUT Gallery Singapore. View it up close and personal with the artworks, you will feel and understand, not only the photography artworks, you might understand more about our city living and lifestyle.

An inspiration

Creatives learn from fellow creatives in the same genre as well as from creatives from different cross-disciplines. Wing Chan Photomontage IMPROVISE/3.0 is an inspiration, on how I can curate my personal photography projects/works into a more refined and curated photography series that can be exhibited and published.

The artistic montage layout is amazing, an area that I would need help down when the time comes. I am lacking badly in the fields of art and craft, along with design work, as they are not my strong points.

Wing Chan Urban-Tapestry 009 photomontage work, is about Seoul subway, shot in year 2014. I like this particular photomontage since I am a big fan of Japan travel, riding on the JR trains, subways, is something that you would be doing (unless you are in a tour group). I wanted to photograph and produce a series on JR Railway stations located in Japan’s countryside towns, especially those iconic stations that comes to colourful life during spring and autumn seasons.

As for simpleArte, they are at the forefront bringing pop art to Singapore. “Hypebeast” is a movement based on street fashion that has proven to be a powerful force in contemporary culture.

“This collaboration provides a platform in which popular art, street culture and food can align and be accessible to the general public,” said Jason Ong, owner of Uni Gallery. “It’s also helping to provide support to children in need.”

“Hypebeast@Uni will offer diners the chance to experience modern street art first-hand as simpleArte brings an artistic perspective to the movement often characterized by high priced sneakers and urban streetwear,“ said Glen Tay, curator at simpleArte.

“You can buy a ‘Hypebeast’ t-shirt, get the insanely priced sneakers … and now you can also own a piece of iconic, limited-edition print from the same movement,” said Tay. “‘Hypebeast’ is the most contemporary of all street culture right now, and our artists are among the frontrunners.”

Featured artists like Takashi Murakami have been lauded around the world for their work – his most expensive piece to date sold for US$13,500,000 at Sotheby’s New York auction in 2008. Steven Harrington is the leader of a contemporary Californian psychedelic-pop aesthetic, while Chiho Aoshima has worked with legendary Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake. Shen Jingdong is a leading contemporary artist in China while Stijn Valentijn describes himself as ‘a part time student of neuro sciences and full time visual artist’.

“We support modern culture in all its forms, and given that the art is so fresh and contemporary, we felt it was a great chance to connect our food with this movement. “We are bringing the best of the world’s artists from the ‘hypebeast’ movement right to your table,” said Ong of Uni Gallery.

The art pieces will be displayed in the main dining area and private dining rooms at Uni Gallery. They will be refreshed every time a sale is made, guests can look forward to new limited editions in a series of four shows. This inaugural showcase will feature iconic artworks pieces by the featured artists Takashi Murakami, Chiho Aoshima, Steven Harrington, Shen Jingdong and up-and-coming Dutch doodle artist Stijn Valentijn.

At the media event, we had an exclusive media-only interaction with Dutch artist Stijn Valentijn via Zoom. This was a very interesting, interactive and fun experience as we learnt and understood more from the artist himself via Zoom on his artworks, inspirations and styles.

Hypebeast@Uni would definitely interest contemporary arts and pop culture lovers in Singapore. With an awesome pairing of delicious Japanese food and drinks, all these makes up a lovely and wonderful combination of arts, food and pop culture coming together. This would make a great outing and gathering for fellow friends who are also into arts, food and pop culture. Do check out Hypebeast@Uni, enjoy and have a fun evening of contemporary arts and pop culture enjoyment along with delicious Japanese food and drinks!
