SYSNMH Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival Open House 2023 is taking place on the weekend of 23rd and 24th September 2023 from 10am to 6:30pm. There are many exciting programmes and activities line-up for you and family to visit, soak in and enjoy Mid-Autumn Festival 2023 at Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival 2023!

General Manager of SYSNMH Winston Lim said: “For our well-loved lantern installations, we tap on relatable themes such as this year’s larger-than-life pandas, to appeal to a wide audience and encourage more people to join in our cultural festivities. Through our ongoing special exhibition Connections Across Oceans: Early Chinese Mutual Aid Organisations, we have been working very closely with various clan associations, and are excited to continue to bring onboard more cultural partners to enrich our celebrations. Together, we hope to enliven our offerings for more visitors to learn about Chinese culture.”

An iconic pair of cute Panda Mid-Autumn Paw-trait 

You can’t miss them when you visit SYSNMH! They are an iconic pair of cute Panda Mid-Autumn Paw-trait! This year’s special installation is titled, “A Mid-Autumn Paw-trait”, featuring two big and adorable giant panda lanterns. Just like a typical giant panda, one is sitting down in a relaxed position, while the other is in a stretching stance at SYSNMH lawn from 29th August to 1st October 2023, 10am to 9pm daily.

This is a collaboration made “paw-sible” through a collaboration with toymaker 52TOYS Panda Roll series and World Wide Fund for Nature Singapore (WWF-Singapore). The Mid-Autumn Paw-trait is SYSNM 9th outdoor installation, they convey SYSNMH wish for every Singaporean to enjoy a “panda-stic” Mid-Autumn reunion. 

More importantly, this iconic pair of cute Panda Mid-Autumn lanterns serve as an acknowledgement of past and ongoing wildlife conservation efforts, and also celebrating the reclassification of giant pandas from endangered to vulnerable statues by the IUCN Red List.

Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival by Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall (SYSNMH) is a well-loved annual cultural event! Having visited Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival at SYSNMH over the past few years before the global pandemic situation hit us, it was fun, lively and packed with family with children. From live performances, activities and nice lanterns display, it was a weekend of fun and bonding time for families with children.

Even though there are safety restrictions in place due to the ongoing global pandemic, we still can celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival and learn about Chinese traditions and customs from the comfort of your own home with the well-loved Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival 2021 Digital Edition!

Lantern Installation “Those Moonlit Moments..”

Date: 31st August 2021 to 26th September 2021

Besides the online digital offerings of Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival, visitors to SYSNMH can enjoy its iconic and cute thematic lantern installations, “Those Moonlit Moments” produced by  Thailand artist Boonyavee Boonsakda (Ngaew Ngaew), in collaboration with SYSNMH. 

The kids would love the four large and cute lanterns! They feature the artist’s characters who are enjoying mooncakes and each other’s company under the gentle and watchful eye of Ngaew’s Moon Rabbit. This Moon Rabbit was created specially for the Mid-Autumn Festival, it’s inspired by the Jade Rabbit from Chinese folklore which keeps Goddess  Chang’e company on the moon.

Don’t miss “Those Moonlit Moments..”! Bring your lanterns, let the children (and you adults too!)  have fun and take photos!

No thanks to the global pandemic Covid-19 that has massively impacted our world economy, work and daily living. Mid-Autumn Festival 2020 is subdued and toned down from previous years. Nevertheless, we still have Mid-Autumn Festival lantern decorations around local favourite destinations such as Chinatown, Gardens By The Bay and Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall. 

Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival today, this would be a great time to be with your family and loved ones. Time for family gathering and bonding, count our blessings during this gloomy global pandemic Covid-19 period.

The two “Lunar Guardians”, 2.5m in height sculptures, they are a tribute to the art of Chinese lion dance culture. If you are an anime fan like me, you would find them similar to the “mecha” design, a contemporary hybrid of tradition and anime combining together, showcased by the two “Lunar Guardians” at SYSNMH!

While the virus created uncertainties and changes to the Wan Qing Festival of Spring 2020 programme, it did not dampen the festive spirit and crowds at SYSNMH, celebrating and enjoying Wan Qing Festival of Spring 2020. The lion dance performance is a top attraction for all the visitors to SYSNMH, especially for the young children!

At the Wan Qing Festival of Spring 2020, I also visited their newly revamped permanent gallery at level 2, on Chinese business pioneers, their history and contributions to Singapore’s growth.

New! Revamped Permanent Gallery 4 – Chinese Business Pioneers

They have left their marks in Singapore, from road names, to schools, institutions and buildings. Chinese business pioneers have played an important and significant role in the contribution and growth of Singapore.

At the newly revamped permanent gallery 4 – Chinese business pioneers at SYSNMH, visitors are able to know more about the early pioneers, their contributions to Singapore through business/economic activities, education, community organisations, publishing and Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

I am an alumni of one of the Chinese business pioneers contribution to education in Singapore. It was known as the Anglo-Chinese Free School, founded in 1885 by Mr Gan Eng Seng, now known as Gan Eng Seng School today. Their legacy continues till today and beyond.

This revamped permanent gallery 4 speaks great volume beyond the textbooks and stuff that we learn about our early Chinese business pioneers. Who are the 23 Chinese business pioneers featured in the newly revamped permanent gallery? I would like to invite you to visit this gallery and learn more about them.

From Brush to Lens – Early Chinese Photography Studios in Singapore

There is another exhibition currently ongoing at SYSNMH, if you are a photographer or a fan of film photography, I highly recommend you to plan a trip to SYSNMH and check out this exhibition!   Photography in the early days didn’t get as much limelight as paintings, calligraphy and artworks, yet they captured lots of history, heritage and culture of Singapore, the people and surroundings, from the early 20th Century.

While visitors do get to view many different photographs across the various museums in Singapore, the role and contributions of photography in Singapore during the early days didn’t get much attention, awareness and publicity that this exhibition currently being held at SYSNMH showcases to the public.

The exhibition, From Brush to Lens – Early Chinese Photography Studios in Singapore, ends on 3rd May 2020! Do plan a trip to SYSNMH and visit this exhibition, don’t forget to visit the newly revamped Permanent Gallery 4 on Chinese Business Pioneers!

An annual cultural event organised by Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall, I had attended Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival previously, it was a fun event, with family and children attending, watching the evening concert, visiting the museum, participating in the various activities that were being organised, there is something for everyone, from the young to adults!

One of the key highlights would be the Memorial Hall’s lantern installation, for this year, the outdoor installation “Moonflowers of Mid-Autumn” is going to dazzle you with 250 stalks of Moonflowers, they are the glow in the art flower sculptures crafted from intricate wire mesh and solar powered LED bulbs. This is a collaboration between Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall and local artist Lee Yun Qin, with 25 volunteers from Beyond Social Services. It’s amazing, beautiful when lighted up in the night and they make great photography opportunities too!  The “Moonflowers of Mid-Autumn” will be on display until 22nd September 2019!

Weekend programmes – 7th and 8th September 2019 

During the Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival 2019 weekend on 7th and 8th September, there are many activities and programmes for the young and adults, featuring 30 unique programmes over the two days period.

Festival Highlight – Sky Lantern Light Up the Sky 

Date: 7th September 2019

Time: 7:30pm

Be mesmerised by three larger than life sky lantern helium balloons for the very first time, as a symbolic gesture of hope and blessings!

Note: Due to regulations set by the Civil Authority of Singapore, the lantern balloon will not be fully released into the sky. They will be tethered and only released to a certain height.

Festival Highlight – “A Mid-Autumn Night’s Dream” Laser Show

Date: 7th and 8th September

Time: 7:15pm, 8:15pm

Their first ever laser light show with a moving orchestral soundtrack telling the story of the origins of Mid-Autumn Festival! Don’t miss it!

Sky Lantern Making Workshop

Over the weekend, Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall (SYSNMH) organised Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival 2018 with many fun activities and events on 22^nd and 23^rd September 2018!

Mid-Autumn Festival is one of my favourite festivals, with the colourful lanterns and getting an opportunity to taste different mooncakes (although I don’t really eat a lot!) with Chinese tea, catching up with family, relatives and friends. At the Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival, we can see extended families coming down together to soak in and enjoy the Mid-Autumn festivities and activities at SYSNMH.

今天是中秋节，祝全家团团圆圆，幸福快乐！

Looking at the multi-generational families coming down to SYSNMH for Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival, it was heart warming to see the families bonding together, enjoying themselves and having fun!

Visitors also took the opportunity to visit the permanent galleries and learn more about the history of Dr Sun Yat Sen revolutionary activities in Southeast Asia as well as the contributions of the Singapore Chinese to the 1911 Revolution, the impact of the revolution on Singapore and the Chinese community in Singapore.

For Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival 2018, there is something very big and delicious that stood out for this year’s celebration! They unveiled Singapore’s largest mooncake sponsored by Kwong Cheong Thye, measuring approximately 1.8m in diameter and 20cm in height! I was glad to be part of this historic moment, up close and personal with the largest mooncake in Singapore!

Oh yes, they had tea appreciation for this year’s Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival and it was really good! Pek Sin Choon Pte Ltd and Lion City Nanyang Tea Society provided the Chinese tea appreciation. I haven’t tasted such excellent tea for quite a while!

Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival has many interesting and fun activities for everybody during the two-day weekend event, attracting the young kids and adults coming together for family fun and bonding time, while enjoying the Mid-Autumn Festival. Although I didn’t sign up for any of the activities, you can check out their Facebook Page for more photos of their activities and fun time!

My favourite segment from the evening concert at SYSNMH Lawn was the LED Dragon Dance, a regular feature at SYSNMH! I reckon they are always a crowd favourite there at SYSNMH! The compound of SYSNMH was packed with visitors watching and enjoying the evening concert at the lawn! On the weekend 30^th September and 1^st October 2017, I visited Wan Qing Yuan, Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall for an evening of Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival 2017 Celebrations (秋月明夜亮晚晴). There were a number of fun activities organised for the weekend, great for families and children, do check out some of their photographs uploaded on their Facebook Page.

I visited 晚晴园 on 30^th October for Mid-Autumn Festival 2017 celebrations. It was great to see families with children coming down for family bonding time and having fun together. The lanterns were a big attraction for the children and also for the parents too, they are childhood memories for the adults too! With the outdoor booths around the lawn area, fun activities and food for the visitors, beside visiting the museum and other activities taking place inside Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall.

The evening concert was great; the LED Dragon Dance got everybody excited as they moved around the crowds, getting up close and personal with them. That was followed by live music performances on the stage, entertaining and captivating the visitors celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival 2017 at 晚晴园, some of the memorable scenes for me were the cute and enthusiastic young children sitting right in front of the stage, watching, cheering and recording videos of the live music performances on stage, spreading great joy and love to the different performers.
