I have been working on GenerativeAI technology, experimenting, learning, writing and sharing more about this GenerativeAI technology, how it would impact photographers, videographers, creatives, artists, and content creators, in both positive and negative aspects. I am in the midst of compiling my research, learning and testing, I am also planning interviews with AI technology industry professionals as well as speaking to fellow photographers, videographers, creatives, artists, and content creators.

GenerativeAI artworks with Adobe Firefly – Generative Fill and Text to Image

With my Adobe Photography subscription plan, I went on to produce GenerativeAI artworks with Adobe Firefly – using their Generative Fill and Text to Image functions.

My first GenAI artworks project produced with a combination of my original photography works enhanced by Adobe Firefly Generative Fill is arriving soon. I am also testing TinTint from Taiwan, I would share more of my experiences on GenAI digital artworks on my TGH Photography and Travel website. The product features both a 7.3mm wide-angle end suitable for framing entire studios or sprawling landscapes and 27x zoom magnification which covers a wide range of frequently used focal lengths, thereby enabling shooting up to the telephoto end at 197mm. The lens also contains a built-in 2x extender which can double the zoom range, making it possible to take highly detailed shots at ranges up to 394mm at the telephoto end.

Despite the high magnification of 27x, the operational responsiveness of the new product’s focus and zoom functions remains the same as those of existing lenses, while the operational responsiveness of the iris has been improved. This makes it possible to accurately capture rapidly moving subjects in cases such as sports broadcasting. Additionally, this will be the first of Canon’s digital drive units to be equipped with highly versatile USB Type-C ports, which will enable the export or import of lens setting data to or from USB memory drives and firmware updates by users. The USB ports can also be used to export lens focus, zoom, and iris setting data and control the lens from remote systems, thereby improving compatibility with remote shooting and virtual production, which are growing in demand.

Viddsee’s first Dolby-enabled Original – Solitude 

Viddsee’s first Dolby-enabled Original – Solitude, was screened on 24th October 2023 at the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA)’s PIXEL Innovation Hub. After the screening, there was a panel discussion on how the partnership has elevated the audio-visual quality of the film.

Following the success of Solitude, Viddsee and Dolby will work together to offer up to 10 filmmakers from Viddsee’s upcoming Scene City Anthology slate over the next two years with an opportunity to produce and distribute their films in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atoms. This partnership will also provide educational opportunities for Viddsee’s creator community through workshops and masterclasses held by Dolby.

For filmmakers and content creators 

After watching the screening of Solitude at IMDA PIXEL Innovation Hub, listening to the panel discussion on Viddsee and Dolby Laboratories partnership, I personally feel that this collaboration announcement would be great, not just for filmmakers, also for those in the content creators segment. 

As a photographer, visual storyteller and content creator myself, that is gradually adding in videos via vlogs, Instagram Reels, TikTok and short story videos into my portfolio of works, with access to Dolby technologies would help in my storytelling journeys via my content creation/video stories, whether with my Canon EOS R6 Mark II or/and Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max.

While producing videos is not my main strength, creating visual stories through my photography. writing and content creation are my key strengths, I am going to bring across to my videography and filmmaking side of things, let’s see where all these brings me.

7 models of Prime Series RF Cinema Lenses

The 7 models of Prime Series RF Cinema Lenses are of the focal lengths 14mm / 20mm / 24mm / 35mm / 50mm / 85mm / 135mm respectively. They are compatible with the Canon EOS C70 (released in November 2020) and EOS R5 C [1] (released in March 2022) RF Cinema Cameras.

These lenses are compatible with the transmission protocol of RF mount, and as with previous models [2], operators can control magnification, chromatic aberration correction, peripheral light correction and a dual pixel focus guide via camera body operations. In addition to these functions, the new lenses feature distortion aberration correction. These features support efficient video production not only during on-location recording but also post-shoot editing.

High Optical Performance

The new products achieve high optical performance suitable for use with 4K and 8K cameras by optimally positioning large-diameter aspherical lens elements and lens elements with anomalous dispersion glass. Their compatibility with the full-frame large-format sensor, bright T values [3], and the use of 11 aperture blades allow for a shallow depth of field for subjects, natural round blurring, and soft image expressions. In addition, since the color balance is unified throughout the series, adjusting color tones when changing lenses, while shooting the same scene can be done with greater ease.

With an appropriate sense of torque of the operation ring, the new lenses allow for precise and smooth adjustments that are required for cinema shooting. In addition, due to the unified design across the series, including the gear position of the operation ring, the diameter of the lens and the rotation angle (operation angle), the lens can be exchanged smoothly without the need to adjust the mounting position of the mat box or external focus adjustment accessories for each model. A new knurled surface near the mount provides a comfortable fit in the user’s hand, allowing the lens to be held securely without gripping the operation ring when attaching and detaching different lenses.

As a F1 and motorsports fan, also a sports/motorsports photographer myself, I love watching F1 motorsports racing action on television. For my hometown Singapore GP, my last attendance was in 2015, after a few years gap, I am back enjoying F1 racing in town for Singapore GP 2023. Safeguarding Tomorrow’s Future by International SOS

The International SOS podcast is titled “Safeguarding Tomorrow’s Future”, experts from International SOS will share their insights on travel risks that youths may be more susceptible to, and how to prevent or mitigate those risks. There will be six episodes that will be launched on a weekly basis starting from 15th May 2023.

Lim Hui Ject, International SOS’ Managing Director (Singapore & Brunei), says: “We recognise the many risks associated with youth independent travel and we are glad to be able to step in and offer guidance through our subject matter experts. We have seen a rise in international travel with international trips in the last eight months surpassing the average monthly number of international trips in pre-COVID times. With the overall increase in international travel, we also expect this to include an increase in youth travel as well. With COVID-related restrictions preventing youth from travelling for so long, we worry that their excitement may cloud their decision making when it comes to their travel plans. As a pioneer and leader in international health and security risk management, we would like to act to help guide young travellers, as they begin exploring travelling independently.”

Social Media Impacts and Influence on Youth Travellers

Youth travellers are less likely to think through the potential risks of their travel plans in depth and are easily influenced by social media. Studies by Condor Ferries, a ferry and cruise company in the UK, found that 90 per cent of them have their international travel decisions influenced by social media content. Furthermore, many youths will be travelling for the first time without their parents or teachers to look out for them. Their lack of exposure in travelling independently results in them having less experience in managing any potential risks by themselves.

Dr Low Kiang Wei, Medical Director (Singapore), International SOS adds: “As highlighted in International SOS’ Risk Outlook 2023, looking beyond COVID-19, emerging global issues, such as rising levels of social unrest and the growing impact of climate change, are an additional dimension of worry for youths exploring independent travel. As these issues are likely to stay for the long term, we must equip our youths with the necessary capabilities to deal with these issues.”

The podcast will also feature local university students who have recently gone on overseas trips and are willing to share more about their travel experiences. The series will cover six topics with relevant subject matter experts addressing the risks associated with these topics.

“Secrets of the Raknus Selu Trail” is a one-hour Docutainment Special that chronicles the Hakka trail of Taiwan, both a cultural and industrial link to the world. In a modern world flooded with modern technology and social media, a new generation of Hakka youth are rediscovering their cultural heritage, giving them the opportunity to relive the history of Hakkas, the Indigenous people of Taiwan and other cultures that cultivated the lands of Taiwan in the past.

Thoughts and views from a fellow travel photographer and travel writer

As a travel photographer, travel writer and visual story teller myself, that have my own personal photography and documentation projects into history, heritage and cultural sectors, watching “Secrets of the Raknus Selu Trail” has a deep personal connection inside me. 

While I am not a Hakka, my strong interest in history, heritage and cultural sectors have brought me to understand my Hokkien roots, as well as Teochew, Cantonese and Hakka over the years. There’s so much more for me to learn and understand such rich history, heritage and culture.

Watching “Secrets of the Raknus Selu Trail” not just given me a greater and deeper insights into Hakka culture, history and heritage, this docutainment special is also an inspiration for us visual story tellers on documenting the areas of history, heritage and culture.

Canon DP-V2730 4K Professional Display

Canon recently launched the DP-V2730 4K Professional Display. This new 27-inch display features improved basic image quality over its predecessor models (1), including core components such as high-image quality display engine, revamped high-resolution algorithms, panels and backlighting systems.

The display features a compact and lightweight body that is ideal for 4K video checking and editing not only in conventional video production environments, but also for remote work in confined spaces including offices and personal residences. Like the highly popular DP-V1830 18-inch display (released in February 2022), the DP-V2730 satisfies HDR standards (2) and delivers high image quality, thus supporting a diverse range of working styles and workflows in the broadcast and video production industries. 

Utilising proprietary Canon technology, the DP-V2730 realises a maximum illuminance of 1,000 cd/m2 for white luminance, as well as improved black luminance and high contrast, making the display more suitable for checking dark or high-contrast areas. In addition, the display faithfully recreates the wide color gamut required by the ITU-R BT.2020 (3) recommendations. What’s more, thanks to Canon’s proprietary optical configuration that helps mitigate luminance and color variations, the angle of view for the display is wide enough to deliver accurate images when several people are viewing the monitor at the same time. 

Compared with the 24-inch DP-V2421, the new 27-inch DP-V2730 realises a 1.3x larger screen size for greater visibility, while also realising a slim design (4) with an approximately 41mm narrower width, enabling use in narrow workplaces such as broadcast relay vehicles and sub-control rooms. What’s more, the display’s smaller size, compared with 30-32-inch displays used for such work as color grading, makes it ideal for video production and a wider range of editing work styles in enviroments such as offices and personal residences where space is limited. 

The new display is equipped with the highly praised HDR Monitoring Assist function of its predecessor models. This function enables users to check input video and various types of signal information, all on a single display, to visualise important information and enable more efficient video checking and editing work. In addition, a multi-screen display (5) function via the SDI/HDMI video input and a Switchout (6) function help reduce the number of devices required and thereby realising a more space efficient video capture and production workplace. 

The DP-V2730 will be available from late February 2023.

Canon EU-V3 – Functional Expansion Unit

Canon recently announced the launch of the EU-V3, a functional expansion unit for the EOS C500 Mark II (released in December 2019) and the EOS C300 Mark III (released in June 2020) models of Canon digital cinema cameras.

 In recent years, there has been a growing need to accommodate a preference for shallow depth of field and smooth background blur in the recording of concerts and other live events. In response to this trend, Canon has announced the EU-V3, an external functional expansion unit for its EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III. Designed for video production at live events, the expansion unit increases the operational capability of these two cameras which has earned high praise for their large-format sensor that enables rich videographic expression. 

By attaching the EU-V3 to either the EOS C500 Mark II or EOS C300 Mark III, the cameras gain additional input/output terminals necessary for live video production. Specialized features for live broadcasting include a “tally” function that indicates which camera the live video is being captured with, and a “return” function that notifies operators which camera is currently broadcasting live. In addition, the unit supports the “focus position guide” function that enables operators to register a desired focus position and display the current focus position on-screen. This makes fast-focusing possible during live productions without missing a single moment. 

Use of the EU-V3 attachment with the EOS C500 Mark II or EOS C300 Mark III requires  installation of firmware, which Canon will provide free of charge in mid October 2022. By installing this firmware, the cameras will gain support for Canon’s proprietary IP1, XC Protocol, thus enabling control of cameras via a network. In addition, the firmware update will provide support for the CN8 x 15 IAS S/E1 and CN8 x 15 IAS S/P1 EF Cinema lenses, as well as 4ch audio parameter display and other functionality. 

The EU-V3 will be available in late 2022.
