Canon announced the EOS R5 Mark II on 17th July 2024, a new full-frame mirrorless camera that outperforms its predecessor, the EOS R5, with groundbreaking features such as the high-performance new 45-megapixel back-illuminated (BSI) stacked CMOS sensor and Accelerated Capture image processor system. The EOS R5 Mark II includes enhancements such as Eye Control AF and Cinema EOS features, bringing Canon’s esteemed “5 series” from the EOS system into the next generation.

“For content creators who dare to dream the impossible, we have the perfect tool for them, the EOS R5 Mark II. With this camera, they now possess the ability to turn their imagination into reality. The EOS R5 Mark II, with its new upgrades and functions, is truly for the creative visionaries of tomorrow”, said David Yeo, Senior Marketing Manager of Consumer Business, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore.

My visual storytelling/photography journeys with Canon EOS 5 Series and EOS R5

My visual storytelling/photography journeys with the Canon EOS 5 series began with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III in 2010, followed by EOS 5DS, EOS 5DS R, EOS 5D Mark IV and the EOS R5. The Canon EOS 5 series is not just esteemed, they are a trusted and well-received camera series used by both professionals and serious enthusiasts.

In my personal opinion, the EOS R5 that was launched in 2020 along with the EOS R6, set the standards, pace and tone of Canon’s full-frame mirrorless EOS R family growth, with this tagline for EOS R5 and EOS R6 – “Born to Rule”. Both EOS R5 and EOS R6 were impressive in terms of specifications and performance.

With the announcement of the EOS R5 Mark II, this new and powerful camera would pick up the baton and continue the legacy of Canon’s esteemed EOS 5 series and the Canon EOS R full-frame mirrorless family into the next generation of both stills photography and videography.

Canon EOS R5 Mark II

The Canon EOS R5 Mark II has groundbreaking features that makes it outperform its predecessor EOS R5.

Power-packed New Core for Unprecedented Performance

The EOS R5 Mark II is powered by the new 45-megapixel back-illuminated (BSI) stacked CMOS sensor, leading the host of feature upgrades.

The new Accelerated Capture System, consisting of the all-new DIGIC Accelerator and the DIGIC X image processor, can process high volumes of data at unprecedented speeds. Together, the two pave the way for powerful new features and enable resource-intensive processing that sets new standards for AF performance.

Dual Pixel Intelligent AF for Smarter Subject Detection and Tracking

Dual Pixel Intelligent AF system

Like the EOS R1, the EOS R5 Mark II is also equipped with the Dual Pixel Intelligent AF system, which leverages the Accelerated Capture system and deep learning. This system greatly improves subject tracking and detection during video and stills shooting. It is highly accurate and capable of tracking the subject even for scenes that were challenging for the EOS R3, like when subjects cross each other and block the main subject.

Register People Priority Function

Videographers and photographers shooting events and concerts will benefit from the Register People Priority function, as it prioritises a preregistered person for subject detection and tracking even when they are in a crowd and have their face turned sideways. The new Action Priority AF mode will automatically switch the focus point to subjects that are shooting, passing, or heading, helping sports photographers capture decisive moments during dynamic, fast-paced sports such as soccer, basketball, and volleyball.

Intuitive and Highly Responsive AF Control

For the first time ever on a “5 series” camera, Eye Control AF allows user to shift the AF frame by simply looking at their new subject to focus on. Updated optics and an improved line-of-sight detection algorithm have doubled the detection frame rate as compared to the EOS R3, thus allowing faster, steadier eye movement detection.

Both photographers and videographers can also store and recall a specific focus position by utilising the focus preset function, which was only previously available on super telephoto lenses. They can register and recall up to six different AF-related settings, which allows for a quicker response to different situations.

Cinema Industry Standards for Next Level Video Production

In addition to the creative flexibility offered by its internal 8K DCI 60p RAW video recording support, the camera also provides ample industry-standard recording modes and options. Several professional production-oriented Cinema EOS system features were also included for professional filmmaking and video production needs.

The new 4K DCI 60p SRAW recording option uses the camera’s full horizontal angle of view and provides a less resource-intensive option for projects requiring RAW video’s post-production latitude. Users can simultaneously record smaller 2K, a newly included function or Full HD proxy video files to the camera’s SD card slot and 8K or 4K main files to the CFexpress Type B slot.

This allows users to edit footage more efficiently. The EOS R5 Mark II possesses the ability to create spectacular 4K videos with oversampled 8K sensor output and 2K/FHD videos from oversampled 4K. In addition, the camera showcases beautiful slow-motion scenes in 4K quality (up to 5x slower) or in Full HD (up to 10x slower) with the 4K 120p or Full HD 240p.

Elevate Your Visual Storytelling

Both the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II are the first EOS system cameras to offer 10-bit Canon Log 2, which provides more vivid colour reproduction. Favoured by many filmmakers for its wider dynamic range (16+ stops) and better preservation of shadow detail, Canon Log 2 expands the possibilities of post-production to meet your boundless artistic visions.

Besides the existing Picture Style colour profiles, the EOS R5 Mark II is also equipped with the Cinema EOS system’s Custom Pictures. The latter allows LUTs (lookup tables), including custom 3D LUTs for Cinema EOS to be applied in-camera even when recording in Canon Log 2/Log 3, or HDR formats so users can better visualise the output video while shooting.

Easy integration with Cinema EOS

The EOS R5 Mark II uses the new XF-AVC S/XF-HEVC S file system, which has similar specifications as the Cinema EOS file system. This system enables workflows that are incompatible with the conventional MP4 format and streamlines the multi-camera projects editing process where Cinema EOS cameras are utilised.

Cinema EOS tools that provide detailed exposure information, such as the waveform monitor, false colours, and zebra display, have also been incorporated. Users can fine-tune exposure more accurately on set and improve efficiency on multiple camera shoots where exposures must be matched.

Seize the moment

The pre-recording feature, inherited from Cinema EOS cameras, will benefit users tasked to capture defining moments. This feature captures a scene up to 5 seconds before recording starts, and can be controlled remotely via the Camera Connect mobile app. There is no need to record continuously, which means smaller file sizes, effectively reducing the time users spend reviewing their footage.

Other significant video features:

Reduced rolling shutter distortion: The new BSI stacked sensor’s faster readout reduces rolling shutter distortion by approximately 40% compared to the EOS R5. This provides seamless action footage and fast camera movement without wobbly artifacts.

Apple ProRes RAW external recording up to 8K 30p: This feature is supported through an HDMI Type-A output terminal. Users can simultaneously record 2K DCI proxy files to the CFexpress card.

Linear PCM 24-bit 4-channel input support: This provides high-quality audio and flexibility for multi-microphone setups that are suitable for interviews and simultaneous ambient noise recording.

Heat dissipating structure: The camera adopts a structure that dissipates heat buildup, allowing reliable recording even at the highest resolutions.

Optional cooling fan for longer high-resolution recording: A cooling fan, Cooling Fan CF-R20EP (sold separately) extends 8K recording times, allowing up to 120 or more minutes of 8K 30p video to be recorded. It also enables limitless 4K 60p video recording with no overheating restrictions.

Support for the latest wireless/wired communication protocols (Wi-Fi 6/6E and 2.5G Base-T wired LAN): These allow high-speed transmission of large photo and video files to a PC or FTP/FTPS/SFTP server, which is suitable for news reporting and editorial work especially with time constraints.

In-Camera Image Enhancements

The EOS R5 Mark II improves workflow efficiency and image quality through in-camera noise reduction and image upscaling that uses deep learning technology.

Neural Network Noise Reduction reduces the noise in high-ISO RAW images while retaining detail and resolution.

In-camera Upscaling function that quadruples the number of pixels in the image, increasing the resolution to up to 179 megapixels with minimal impact on image quality.

Combine both to generate cleaner, high-quality extreme crops that retain stunning clarity and detail, further empowering users to unleash their creativity.

Other significant still image features:

Blurred/Out-of-focus image detection: This function is applicable to JPEG and HEIF images shot with the electronic shutter. It detects and rates images with faces that are blurred or out of focus. Users will also find it easier to choose the best shots from the many captured via improved high-speed continuous shooting performance with the electronic shutter.

Dual Shooting: Users can simultaneously record 16:9, approx. 33.2-megapixel JPEG still images while recording Full HD 30p videos. This improves work efficiency for users who require still photos and videos of the same event when time is limited.

Delightful and reliable to shoot with

Designed to perform reliably on demanding shoots, the EOS R5 Mark II is built like the EOS R5, with similar dust- and drip-resistant weather sealing to withstand challenging weather conditions. For added protection, users may consider pairing it with the new Shoe Cover ER-SC3. The Rain Cover ERC-R5S / ERC-R5L will also come in useful for users shooting with the EOS R5 Mark II under rainy conditions for a prolonged period. The blackout-free EVF is twice as bright as the EOS R5’s and is equipped with superior anti-fog performance, which provides a brighter, clearer view of the scene even in unpredictable weather conditions. The Eyecup ER-KE can be added to provide a better EVF experience by blocking out stray lights to improve visibility and achieve more precise Eye Control AF.

The EOS R5 Mark II features a 5-axis In-Body IS (Image Stabilizer), with a newly designed mechanism and improved algorithms that increase its effectiveness when compared to the EOS R3. When shooting with a compatible RF lens with Optical Image Stabilizer, users can expect up to 8.5 stops’ equivalent image stabilisation so handheld images where tripods are not available will look even better up close.

To meet increased power requirements, the EOS R5 Mark II is powered by a new battery, Battery Pack LP-E6P, which has a higher current discharge but keeps the same form as other LP-E6 series batteries and can be charged with the LC-E6 charger. The USB Power Adapter PD-E2 (sold separately), can also charge the battery inside the camera and supplies more power than the USB Power Adapter PD-E1.

The USB Power Adapter PD-E2 can be combined with the DC Coupler DR-E6P, a new DC coupler for LP-E6 series-type batteries, to supply power directly to the camera during long shoots such as events or time-lapse recording. For enhanced operability such as vertical shooting support, users can combine the EOS R5 Mark II with:

Battery Grip BG-R20: A battery grip with weight balance, buttons, and multi-controller position optimised for vertical shooting. It is compatible with the EOS R5/ R6 Mark II/ R6.

Battery Grip BG-R20EP: A battery grip with the same features as BG-R20, with an additional 2.5G Base-T Ethernet port to support high-speed wired communication. This meets the needs of professional users who require wired network compatibility and better support for vertical shooting.

Pricing and Availability

The Canon EOS R5 Mark II will be available at Canon authorised dealers in end August 2024 at the following retail price.

Canon develops the key imaging system components featured inside its EOS series of digital interchangeable-lens cameras, from the CMOS sensors, image processors and interchangeable lenses- under the core concept of, “Speed, Comfort and High Image Quality”. Canon has put together a wide range of product lineup, from high-performance flagship models that are highly trusted by professionals, to entry level models that allow users to enjoy high image quality shooting with easy operation. Besides that, users have access to a wide and rich selection of RF and EF series lenses that make possible a wealth of creative expression. Canon continues to support the diverse needs of customers.

In September 2003, Canon introduced the EOS Kiss Digital (EOS Digital Rebel or EOS 300D in other regions). This was the dawn of digital SLR cameras, a groundbreaking camera that brought about a breakthrough in the digital SLR market, a competitively priced digital SLR that featured a compact, lightweight design, capturing the top share of the global market and setting the stage for growth in the digital SLR market.

From then on, Canon has continued to grow and develop, launching a range of groundbreaking products, including the professional EOS-1D series and the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for digital SLR video recording. In October 2018, the Canon EOS R System was born from Canon’s desire to construct the ideal lens mount and maximise the appeal of its new RF lenses. Canon has since continued to expand the range of imaging creativity and new possibilities for visual expression, including the release of Canon EOS R5 – the first camera to feature 8K video recording (2) in July 2020.

In 2021, Canon announced the Canon EOS R3 full-frame mirrorless camera (released in November 2021). This camera features the high performance and reliability demanded by professional and enthusiast users, along with eight new RF lenses (3). Through new launches such as the Canon EOS VR System, Canon further expanded its lineup and they managed to secure the No.1 share of the global market for the 19th consecutive year.

Canon will continue to refine its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technology while further strengthening and expanding the EOS series of cameras and RF/EF series of lenses, opening up new avenues of image capture to meet the needs of increasingly diverse users and to promote the spread of photo and video culture.

My first holiday trip to Vietnam, visiting Hoi An and Da Nang took place in March 2018. As for my very first trip to Vietnam, it was in November 2014 for a business trip when I was still in my previous company, visiting an industrial estate location a few hours drive away from Ho Chi Minh City. After one year, I am finally going to write and publish my travel article along with Hoi An and Da Nang travel/food photographs that I took with the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and LG V30+ smartphone.

Over a period of 5 days, this was a really very free and easy holiday, basically there were no major travel plans or schedule during that time, with two Macquarie University friends that I knew from my Australian Alumni Singapore (AAS) networks, they are Chef Keith and Chef Jude, whom I have a lot of food photography and food eating adventures with both of them. This travel adventure to Hoi An and Da Nang wasn’t much of a difference, basically we were eating a lot of local delicious Vientamese delights and drinking lots of Vietnamese coffee. Since Chef Keith had visited Hoi An previously, he had a list of food places to bring us for lunch and dinner.

I am taking a different approach to writing my Hoi An and Da Nang travelogue, this would not be an individual day article approach, instead it would be on interesting places/food that we visited during our travel adventures to Hoi An and Da Nang.

We flew to Da Nang via Ho Chi Minh City with Vietnam Airlines from Changi Airport Terminal 4, followed by a car ride down to Hoi An from Da Nang International Airport.

Accommodation

Hai Au Boutique Hotel 576 Cua Dai

A simple and comfortable hotel in Hoi An, their room rate is not expensive. While their location is slightly further away from the old town area, you can ride a bicycle over or just walk that little bit of extra distance and you can explore more different roads in Hoi An, discovering more gems!

Food

Local Vietnamese restaurant at 113 Lý Thái Tổ

Our first dinner location when we arrived at Hoi An, totally local and authentic, we didn’t spot any tourists, there were no English translation on their menu. The staff couldn’t speak much English, a classic chicken and duck situation. Basically, Chef Jude pointed at the banner where some of their dishes were highlighted and we waited for the local Vietnamese dishes to arrive. This was a very memorable local Vietnamese dinner, authentic and very delicious.

Madam Kieu

Located on the opposite of Hoi An Old Town, across the river that can be reached via the bridge that is packed with people walking across from both sides. Madam Kieu is just located right next to the entrance of Hoi An Night Market, therefore they attracts quite a number of tourists. Although the price is higher as compared to other parts of Hoi An, you can be assured of their quality and tastes. This restaurant was recommended by Chef Keith and we had a great time feasting over there!

Hoi An Roastery

There are many coffee places in Hoi An, Hoi An Roastery is one of them. They did the café up, nice ambience and furnishings, it’s a relaxing coffee joint to rest your legs when you are exploring Hoi An Old Town. Vietnamese coffee is well known, has a great reputation, they have excellent quality coffee beverages. If you are a coffee lover, you would definitely enjoy Vietnamese coffee in Hoi An!

Hoi An Night Market

A bustling night market across the river from Hoi An Old Town, packed with visitors in the night. Do check out their night market, from craft works to food, that’s something for you to explore. Chef Keith highly recommended this shop selling roasted nuts, we went there to check it out, tasted their various flavoured roasted nuts and we were hooked. You will not regret buying many bottles of different flavoured roasted nuts back home!

Hoi An Central Market

When we explored Hoi An Old Town on foot instead of riding the bicycle provided by the hotel, we managed to explore and discover more local gems. Hoi An Central Market is the type of wet markets that similar in this part of the Indo-China region. For travelers who are not too acustomed to street food, they might be a bit hesitant. As for the three of us, we love street food, we went inside Hoi An Central Market, had our lunch and shopping in the local market.

Street food

Along the roads of Hoi An, you can spot food carts being setup with tables and chairs nearby them whereby you can enjoy a hot local Vietnamese street food. Like what I mentioned earlier, if you are are not too acustomed to street food, you might be a bit hesitant.

As this particular junction, Chef Keith said this two food carts selling Banh Mi and Pho are very delicious. Once we tasted them, we were in awe by the quality and taste of the Vietnamese bread, the Pho, smooth and soft noodles! I like the Banh Mi so much that if any friend coming back from a Vietnam holiday, I asked them if they can bring me back a Banh Mi!

Oh yes, you have to get used to their small chairs and tables, Chef Keith and Chef Jude had some challenges adapting to their chairs!

BBQ Restaurant – Da Nang

Our last night was in Da Nang, we visited this BBQ restaurant highly recommended by Chef Keith and we knew that he won’t go wrong with his Chef standards. The meats were seasoned in different flavours differently, slowly cooked over the small charcoal pit on the table. That was a really enjoyable BBQ dinner!

Other Vietnamese Food

Just in case, I missed out on of the Vietnamese street food because I don’t have the name of the food place and address, this special photo album on Vietnamese food would be a very useful reference if you travel to Hoi An and Da Nang, wanting to try out their local Vietnamese food.

Arts/Craft/Photography

Hoi An is an ideal destination/community for creative industry, writers, artists, painters, photographers etc. The history and heritage of Hoi An Old Town, with its conserved and protected houses, make it a wonderful partnership and collaboration for the creative folks and Hoi An.

Precious Heritage Museum and Art Gallery by Rehahn Photography

Precious Heritage Museum and Art Gallery by Rehahn Photography, a must visit place if you are a fan of travel and portraiture photography and learning about the ethnic tribes in Vietnam. Rehahn’s photography works are amazing, you would be mesmerised by his portraiture, travel and documentary photography works. The precious heritage museum and art gallery is worth a visit, to learn and understand more about the ethnic tribes in Vietnam.

March Gallery

Located in the Old French Quarter of Hoi An, opposite Precious Heritage Museum and Art Gallery, lies a colourful and artistic gallery and art space, the March Gallery, showcasing a variety of creative arts work, from contemporary art, limited edition prints, craftworks etc. Do visit them and check out their collection of creative and artistic works.

Friendly Leather Bag Shop

One of my things to do when I visited Hoi An was to check out their leather shops, I heard so much about them, saw photos of various types and sizes of leather products. There were many leather shops in Hoi An and I checked out a few of them! Since I wanted to get a small leather bag, I searched high and low for something that I really like and it must suit me. Down the same road as Precious Heritage Museum and Art Gallery and March Gallery, there is a leather shop known as Friendly Leather Bag Shop. They have a few other outlets in Hoi An Old Town, this was the shop that we visited and I got my leather bag from there!

Beautiful handcrafted lanterns

In the night, Hoi An is very bright, colourful and beautiful, lighted up by the beautiful handcrafted lanterns. If you have the space to hang lanterns in your home, I strongly encourage you to check out Hoi An handcrafted lanterns, that you can buy and bring back home!

Landmarks

Town Bridge Cầu An Hội

A bridge that connects from Hoi An Old Town to one of the islands along the river, this is a bustling hot spot for tourists to take photos of the river, old houses along the river on the side of Hoi An Old Town, boats ferrying tourists along the river on a slow cruise, placing water paper lanterns lighted with candles, on the river and letting it flow downstream. Many tourists cross over to the island, it’s like the new town, with its food and drinking options, and the Hoi An Night Market is located there too!

Cau Nhat Ban/Japanese Covered Bridge

The iconic symbol of Hoi An, one of the most famous landmarks and tourist attraction in Hoi An, Vietnam. Many tourists would pose in front or nearby this Japanese Covered Bridge for photographs. I didn’t full explore this heritage bridge, just took photos of this bridge in the day and night! When I visit Hoi An again, I hope to explore more!

Hai Van Pass (North of Da Nang)

This Hai Van Pass was a destination that I discovered while doing my research on where and what to do in Hoi An and Da Nang. We had an amazing mountain pass costal drive, saw some gorgeous landscape sceneries and sea view! Having traveled to some of the best coastal drives in the world such as Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia and Hawaii. The drive up to Hai Van Pass stood out as one of the best coastal drives for me. We hired a driver who took us from Hoi An to Hai Van Pass before returning back to Da Nang.

Along the coastal drive up, there are spots that make great photography opportunities! At the top of the Hai Van Pass, that’s where you would see buses, vans, cars and motorcycles parked together, visiting the old fort and bunkers. The bird’s eye view up there are breathtaking, photographers would love it. Once you are up there, you would be able to understand why I wanted to do the drive up to Hai Van Pass. Yes, I would go back again when I visit Hoi An and Da Nang again. Do visit my flickr photo albumsto view more photos of Hoi An and Da Nang, as well as delicious Vietnamese food!

Hoi An is a beautiful destination in Vietnam, the Old Town still retains its heritage, history, culture and architecture, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has a good mix of old and new, tourism, hospitality, craft and arts. I would love to go back there again, there are still a lot more to explore! I would also want to enjoy my cupppa of coffee, enjoy a laid back and relaxing lifestyle, get more leather craft and enjoy a slower pace of life with my camera for street and travel photography.

The Canon EOS 5D series family of DSLR camera bodies are well known in the market, it’s one of the best full frame DSLR cameras with great technical specifications and capabilities. My story with the Canon EOS 5D series began with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III.

When I reviewed the Canon EOS 5D Mark III in 2012, I had a fun and exciting photography adventure at that time, one of the photographs that I shot with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III review camera during that time was chosen for a photography exhibition at Gardens By The Bay when it was officially opened. The EOS 5D Mark III was like my secret lucky charm Canon DLSR camera that I never owned.

Fast forward from 2012 to 2014, I went for a trip to Hokkaido in November 2014 with a loan unit from a photographer friend Marcus, this maiden Hokkaido trip turned out into another photography milestone for me, the Canon EOS 5D Mark III was the camera that allowed me to capture some of the most gorgeous landscape photographs, opening up my maiden entry into publishing my own photobook and printing A3 photographs on my Canon PIXMA Pro 10 printer for some special group of relatives and friends who encouraged and supported me a lot when I started on my photography journey.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III set a pretty high benchmark for her performance and capabilities. When the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV was announced in August 2016, I was secretly excited (from a photography enthusiast perspective) and would love to have a go with this new Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. From a professional/commercial photographer perspective, I am very keen and curious to see, feel and test for myself the capabilities of this new DSLR camera, how does it compare to the EOS 5DS, EOS 5DS R and EOS 5D Mark III, considering its price and the features packed inside the EOS 5D Mark IV.

From my first few photographs that I shot with the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, to be honest with everybody here, I was blown away by the accuracy and improved dynamic range of the EOS 5D Mark IV. I used the Speedlite 580EX2 with the EOS 5D Mark IV, I was able to get very accurate photographs without much/any shadows, thanks to the improved dynamic range of the EOS 5D Mark IV.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV graced a few events during the period it was with me, participated in some interesting photography adventures, visiting the Singapore Philatelic Museum, National Museum of Singapore and Asian Civilisations Museum, LG G6 smartphone launch, attended a modern communal dining known as the Quarters Experience and also a product/portraiture collaboration photo shoot. I also brought it out to take photographs of the cats in my neighbourhood, as well as, acting as a tourist and taking photographs of the Marina Bay during a photography walkabout.

Hong Peng

Improved dynamic range

The dynamic range of the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV has improved in the darks/shadows range from her early predecessor models. During the various shoots with the EOS 5D Mark IV, I observed that the EOS 5D Mark IV managed to capture the details of the darks/shadows range, thus allowing easier post editing in the darks/shadows recovery.

I also observed the improvement of the dynamic range from an earlier review, the Canon EOS 1DX Mark II. From my personal observations from the photographs that I took, analysing and forming my own personal opinions after reviewing both the EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS 1DX Mark II, my personal view is that the EOS 5D Mark IV has a more improved dynamic range than the EOS 1DX Mark II.

Colours

One aspect of the Canon EOS 5D series of DSLR cameras is the colours, they are able to produce rich and dynamic colours, ideal for travel photography and portraiture photography! Personally, I find the Canon EOS 5D series cameras (having also reviewed EOS 5D Mark III, EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R) produce rich and dynamic colours, suitable for straight off the camera jpeg photos printing.

Anti-Flickr

An improvement that many photographers would welcome with open arms, especially those photographers who have to shoot indoors, whether for events, indoor events or sports. This feature was available in the Canon EOS 1DX Mark II.

Inside my review article that I published not too long ago, I also wrote about this feature. The flickering of the indoor lights always pose an issue to photographers and they can give some photographers many problems/challenges to handle when shooting indoors. With the Anti-Flicker technology, indoor sports or events photography with the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is so much more easier and pleasant, without the hassles of the flickering lights.

Wi-Fi

The demands of photography and how society “consumes” photographs have changed a lot over time, there are times when a photographer needs to send their works as fast as possible, to their client, agency or even doing live updates on their social media channels/platforms.

With the Wi-Fi built inside the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, photographers would find this capability a blessing and sometimes, a must for their photography works requirement, especially for events photography.

Although my Wi-Fi connection setup between the DSLR and smartphone wasn’t as smooth flowing as I would like it to be, once it was setup and connected. Future connections were much faster and smoother, thus allowing quick and easy connection between the camera and smartphone, thus allowing the photographer to continue with their workflow to share or send the photographs over to their client/agency.

Sports/wildlife/fast action photography

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is a great camera and can be utilised in many photography genre. However, my personal opinions are that it’s not fast enough for sports/wildlife/fast action photography, even though it can still do its job and capture the photographs that you need.

The EOS 5D Mark IV is an excellent camera, highly and strongly recommended for travel, events, portraiture photography. If you are looking at sports/wildlife/fast action photography, do consider the Canon EOS 1DX Mark II.

4K Video capabilities

The reputation and video capabilities of the Canon EOS 5D series has always been one of the key and strong factors that make the Canon EOS 5D series well liked by professionals. Although I am a stills person, I do take videos once a while to complement my photography and writing work.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV has the ability to shoot DCI 4K movies and this is something that is very much welcomed. The Dual Pixel CMOS AF built inside the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, makes shooting of 4K videos easier and faster.

While I may not be a professional in video production work, the ability to shoot 4K videos is a huge bonus when it is needed, for events, travel photography etc. I shot some videos below with the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV during the review period, here are some of them uploaded onto my YouTube channel:

Thoughts and views – EOS 5D Mark IV vs EOS 5DS vs EOS 5DS R vs EOS 5D Mark III

The Canon EOS 5D family has produced an excellent series of DSLR cameras, some photographers might be thinking inside their mind, which model among them suits my photography genres and needs?

Therefore, I have come up with my own personal pointers to help/direct you towards the Canon EOS 5D camera models that might suit you best –

Choose the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

You are into events / travel photography

You are also into 4K video production

You are into medium format prints

Choose the Canon EOS 5DS R

You need the high megapixels

You are into large format prints

Travel photography is your key focus

Choose the Canon EOS 5DS

You need the high megapixels

You are into large format prints

Portraiture / Products photography are your key focus

Choose the Canon EOS 5D Mark III

When budget is a constraint and you don’t mind a slightly older DSLR camera model that is still a good DSLR camera

From my personal experiences reviewing all the above Canon EOS 5D series DSLR cameras, I personally prefer the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV (for travel, products and events photography) and the Canon EOS 5DS R (for commercial travel projects).

Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS II USM lens review

The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS II USM lens is a kit lens that can be part of Canon EOS 5D Mark IV kit set combination that you can purchase with, the other combination being the EF 24-70mm f/4 L IS USM. The EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS II USM lens is an upgrade to the earlier EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM lens that is a kit lens for the Canon EOS 5D in 2005.

At this focal length from 24mm to 105mm, it’s ideal for wide angle to mid telephoto photography usage. A pretty solid and excellent lens, great for general photography usage. This is a much improved lens through my observations during the review period, whereby I shot quite a number of photographs with this kit lens. With the improved IS performances, the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS II USM lens is ideal for the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, in both stills photography and videography.

Final thoughts, views and opinions

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is an excellent and capable DSLR camera, ideal for both stills photography and videography. During the short review period, I managed to explore and tested out most of her capabilities. The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is really ideal for events, wedding and also travel photography.

I currently own the Canon EOS 1DX as my main camera setup, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is able to fit in nicely to my overall setup if I decide to go ahead with this combination and also if my finances allow. This is a really awesome DSLR camera and I really like it a lot.

In my earlier paragraphs, I wrote about my personal thoughts on the Canon EOS 5D series family of DSLR cameras. I would use that as a guide if I decide to add in another DSLR camera to my current setup and I hope this personal sharing would be useful for my followers, readers and fellow photographers. From my reviews done so far, I have a personal and stronger inclination towards Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS 5DS R, based on their key strengths and photography direction that I want to head into with each of them.

The retail recommended price for the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV might be a bit pricey, however, this is definitely a worthy investment if you have the funds. If you are planning to own the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, go for it and explore the world of stills photography and videography together in one powerful Canon DSLR camera body!

** I would like to thank Canon Singapore for the opportunity to review the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV **
