Going back in time and doing a recap, the EOS R6 was announced in July 2020, I had a short hands on session with the EOS R6, followed by a review article that I published in March 2021. Fast forward approximately 2.5 years from July 2020 to November 2022, the new EOS R6 Mark II is here, with big shoes to fill. Having tried, tested and reviewed the EOS R6, it was Born to Rule, making huge waves and impressions in the photography, as well as videography and content creators markets, on both professional and leisure sectors. It’s more than just impressive, the EOS R6 is a powerful workhorse full-frame mirrorless camera and the EOS R6 Mark II is going to change the game further and better.

What makes the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, a game changer for photography and videography? First up, let’s start off and explore into the video capabilities of the EOS R6 Mark II.

EOS R6 Mark II: Meeting the Needs of Professional Video Workflows

The EOS R6 II records 6K RAW externally via HDMI, maintaining high quality even with intense post-processing, with Full HD proxy data simultaneously recorded to one of the 2 SD card slows for ease of editing. 

Internally, it is capable of high-quality 4k 60p video oversampled from 6K, and High Frame Rate video up to Full HD 180p, in addition to Canon Log 3 and HDR PQ video. It has improved heat management, therefore unlimited continuous recording of 4K 30p is now possible.

An alternative Quick Control screen that resembles those on Cinema EOS cameras provides an intuitive interface for users using the EOS R6 Mark II alongside the Cinema EOS System.

Video: Seamless Creative Expression

The EOS R6 Mark II is the first Canon EOS camera to support focus breathing correction, which reduces unwanted changes in angle of view during focus transitions. This complements existing features such as AF speed adjustment, providing greater control over focus transitions which is crucial for expression. 

In addition to the existing zebra display, the EOS R6 Mark II is equipped with the false colour function widely used in the Cinema EOS system, making it easier to adjust exposure even in tricky conditions. 

Two other video features making their full-frame EOS camera debut are: 

• Pre-recording for movies: A staple feature on Cinema EOS cameras, this allows users to capture moments that occur up to 5 seconds before the record button is pressed, reducing the need to “record on standby”. 
• Hybrid Auto Mode: This records a video 2-4 seconds before shutter release during still image shooting and automatically compiles them into a digest movie for the day, providing readily available video content to suit a variety of purposes. 

Video: High-quality Livestreams with UVC/UAC Compatibility 

The EOS R6 Mark II supports UVC (USB Video Class) and UAC (USB Audio Class) protocols, enabling high-quality Full HD 30p video and audio to be delivered to a Windows/Mac OS computer in real time, making it ideal for livestreams, remote meetings, and computer-based video recording. Live streamers and content creators can now take full advantage of a full-frame camera and high-quality lenses through plug and play on both Windows and Mac OS. 

Up to 40 fps Burst with AF/AE Tracking: Enhanced Detection and Tracking Capabilities 

In electronic shutter mode, the EOS R6 Mark II can go up to 40fps continuous shooting. This is the first EOS camera to go beyond 30 fps in AF/AE-tracking continuous still shooting capabilities. In mechanical shutter mode, continuous shooting is up to 12 fps with AF/AE tracking.

The EOS R6 Mark II has added horses, trains, and aeroplane to the existing subjects detectable by the deep learning-based algorithm. Users can also specify right or left eye priority for Eye Detection AF in photo or video mode.They also have more flexibility to decide on the subjects to be detected. There is also a new “Auto subject detection” mode, allowing users to automatically detect more than 1 type of subject within the same frame. 

Tracking performance has been improved with the expanded application of deep learning technology to subject tracking. By extracting subject features based on deep learning, the camera can now maintain consistent tracking even with changes in posture, orientation, or ambient brightness. This applies to animals, vehicles, and other subjects of the user’s choice for both stills and videos.

Other noteworthy new features that aid responsiveness include:

• AI Focus AF mode: This automatically detects subject motion and switches between One-Shot AF and Servo AF modes, allowing better response to subjects with changing states of motion. 
• Digital teleconverter: Increases the focal length by 2x or 4x with the touch of a button, allowing quick response to unexpected telephoto shooting moments without the need to change lenses. 

New Developed 24.2MP Image Sensor

The EOS R6 Mark II has a newly developed 24.2-megapixel full-frame image sensor that achieves a higher pixel resolution than the 20.1-megapixel EOS R6 with new sharpness processing that achieves visual resolution surpassing even the 30.4-megapixel EOS 5D Mark IV. The native ISO speed is up to 102,400. 

The EOS R6 Mark II is equipped with In-Body IS and HDR PQ HEIF recording. A new “Moving subject priority” HDR mode has been added, which helps to overcome the difficulty of creating HDR merges of moving subjects by achieving the same effect with just one shot. 

Greater Connectivity: Supports 5GHz Connection, Easier Smartphone Connection 

Faster wireless connections to smart devices are now possible as the EOS R6 Mark II supports both 5GHz and 2.4GHz wireless connections. Smartphone connectivity is also expanded, with Camera Connect app functions such as automatic data transfer and shutter release, which are now also possible via a wired USB connection. Data transfer to FTP servers is also supported via wired and wireless methods 

Designed for Durability and Power Efficiency 

The EOS R6 Mark II features dual SD card slots for extra reliability, and a dust- and drip-resistant construction designed to support outdoor shooting. Designed for power efficiency, it can shoot up to 760 shots on a single charge using the LP-E6NH battery. 

RF135mm f/1.8L IS USM: Better Bokeh, Faster Speed and Up to 8 Stops IS

For those who are familiar with the Canon EF lenses lineup, the EF135mm f/2L USM is probably not a Canon L lens that gets your attention as much, versus the holy trinity lenses. Canon photographers who work with prime lenses, the EF135mm f/2L is popular among portraiture photographers and still a highly sought after portraiture lens. 

It’s great to see the legendary 135mm making a comeback in the RF lenses lineup, the RF135mm f/1.8L IS USM, with better bokeh and faster speed. This is currently the only 135mm lens in the market to be equipped with built-in optical image stabilisation with up to 5.5 stops, and up to 8 stops IS when combined with a compatible camera via Coordinated Control IS. 

This RF135mm f/1.8L lens only weighs approximately 935g – lighter than some lenses with similar specifications but without image stabilisation. With a larger f/1.8 aperture, compared to its EF counterpart, this not only provides beautiful bokeh for excellent subject-background separation, but also allows faster shutter speeds in challenging lighting conditions.

Some of the recent EOS R cameras are equipped with the new 15-pin Multi-Function Shoe, the new Speedlite EL-5 leverages on this, achieving faster and more stable communication with the camera, which improves overall performance and reliability. This also allows additional functionalities such as wireless control via smartphone.

Built for Speed: Fast Recycling Up to 0.1s; at least 95 continuous flashes at full output

The Speedlite EL-5 is smaller, lighter and more affordable than the Speedlite EL-1, it uses the same high-capacity rechargeable LP-EL lithium-ion battery but with better efficiency. The EL-5 features a recycling time of approximately 0.1s to 1.2s and can emit continuous flashes approximately 95x or more at full output (GN 60).

If you require fine lighting control, microflach as low as 1/1024 can be activated for such situations. 

Enhanced Connectivity: Expanded wireless functions for more creative freedom

Wireless flash functionality has been expanded – in addition to compatibility with wireless control as a transmitter and a receiver. The Speedlite EL-5 also supports wireless remote control of flash settings using a smartphone via the Camera Connect app. It also shares the same dust and drip-resistance quality as the EOS R5 body, ensuring stable performance.

As of November 2022, the Speedlite EL-5 is compatible with the EOS R6 Mark II, EOS R3, EOS R7 and EOS R10 via a firmware update.

Initial Thoughts and Views

Having tested and reviewed the EOS R6 previously, I would be making comparisons with the new EOS R6 Mark II during the media session when I saw it for the first time. Notable improvements for me would be the 40 fps continuous shooting as well as improved tracking performance. The other key highlights for me would be from the video segment, the improvements and the quality of professional video workflow packed inside the EOS R6 Mark II. 

A hybrid camera for photographers and videographers/content creators, a game changer. While an increase from 20.1MP to 24.2MP may not be enough to satisfy every user out there, this is sufficient to get most of the jobs done or even your personal photography requirements. I am interested to see for myself the quality and output from the new 24.2MP sensor.

I hope to share more on them when I get the opportunity to review the Canon EOS R6 Mark II when it is available.

At the Chua Soo Bin: Truths & Legends, an exhibition held at National Gallery Singapore from 6th December 2019 to 28th June 2020. There are close to 100 photographic works alongside archival materials, displaying the history and development of photography in Singapore, an area that is traditionally overlooked. Mr Chua Soo Bin photography works, tells more than just complex stories of his subjects. His portraiture artworks displayed great trust, close relationship and being up close and personal with the subjects and surroundings, through the Legends Series Photographs.

“Spotlighting the works of Singapore artists and educating the public of their artistic practices continue to be a priority for the Gallery. While photography has traditionally been under-researched in Singapore, it has played a significant role in our art history. The iconic works of Chua Soo Bin are excellent examples of the potential of photography as an art form. It has been exactly three decades since Legends was completed. We hope that this retrospective will raise awareness of Chua’s significant contributions to Singapore’s art scene as a photographer, a gallerist, art dealer and art patron. A collection of photography artworks, candid and informal portraits of modern Chinese ink artist Wu Guanzhong over two decades. The trust and rapport between artist and photographer is more than just special, beyond amazing, reflected through this collection of photographs.

Third Section: The life and journey of Master Photographer Chua Soo Bin

In this final third section, we learnt a lot more about Master Photographer Chua Soo Bin life, career and his commercial photography works.

During the preview session of Chua Soo Bin: Truths & Legends, we had the honour of meeting the legend himself, master photographer Chua Soo Bin, who shared some insights of the photographs that were on display inside the gallery while we were on a short preview tour.

After that, we had a short Q&A session too, listening to his years of experience, not just in photography, the stories behind those portraitures and insights into the different eras of photography from film to digital.

My personal thoughts and feelings as a photographer

For all photographers out there, whether you are from the old school of film photography or a young person learning photography in today’s digital world, I strongly encourage you to visit Chua Soo Bin: Truths & Legends photography exhibition at National Gallery Singapore.

As the saying goes, a picture speaks a thousand words, when you visit this photography exhibition, you are not just walking into a master photographer’s eyes, works, and relationship with the person/people/environment. The portraits/photographs “speak to you” too, as you view the photography exhibition, a connection that bridge the photographer, subjects/people and their artworks across to you.

Chua Soo Bin: Truths & Legends, is a very inspiring photography exhibition, personally for me as a photographer. Having started my photography with film photography more than three decades back, viewing the photography prints shot on film cameras brought me back in time when it was just 36 frames in a roll of film and you had to print the photographs, versus the modern digital photography of today, instant gratification and sharing on social media.

I can continue writing and sharing, I feel that I would really like you to visit this truly special photography exhibition at National Gallery Singapore. I would just leave you with this quote below by the Master Photographer himself, that strikes a deep chord with me and my photography.

Canon announced the launch of the new RF85mm f/1.2L USM portrait prime lens. Now, the new RF85mm f/1.2L USM redefines what an 85mm lens can achieve on Canon’s new EOS R system.

All About Light 

From a soft diffused glow to a spectacularly lit skylight, the mastery of light makes a vital difference to photography. With its large aperture of f/1.2, the RF85mm f/1.2L USM allows more light to enable photographers to control light exposure and its 9- blade circular aperture also delivers amazingly beautiful and soft bokeh effect. The f/1.2 aperture enables the capturing of sharp and crisp images in low light environments with a higher shutter speed. 

The 85mm focal length has been the ideal choice for portrait photographers, allowing them to create natural-looking portraits and producing beautiful bokeh in conjunction with large-aperture lenses.

A New Sensory Experience with RF Mount & Control Ring 

The RF85mm f/1.2L USM also features a new control ring found in new RF lens series. Users can assign settings including aperture value, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity and exposure compensation. The control ring provides an accurate tactile feedback in the form of soft click-stops to the user as they make adjustments. 

When the control ring is operated alongside the main dial and quick control dial on the EOS R camera, the user will have three dials to set the aperture, shutter speed and ISO sensitivity respectively, it reduces the difficulty of operations that formerly required several steps. 

It is recommended that users try assigning exposure compensation to the control ring during portrait shooting. For example, when shooting portraits outdoors and the lighting conditions change unexpectedly, users may use their left hand to operate the control ring and adjust exposure compensation while simultaneously focusing on using the shutter button with their right hand. The dust and drip resistance ensures high durability even when shooting outdoors.

Photographs provided us with a lot of rich and cultural insights into the history, culture, development, changes and growth in the community, society and country, not just through the eyes of the photographers, you can also see the world during their time through the eyes of the subjects.

There is a very special exhibition taking place at The Perankan Museum, titled Amek Gambar (Taking Pictures): Peranakans and Photography, it would not just amaze the historian, heritage enthusiast, this special photography exhibition would be very beneficial to photographers (whether you are young or old, enthusiast or professional), from observing how photographs were taken during that era (especially portraiture photography) and the history of photography that started in 1839.

When you arrive at The Peranakan Museum for Amek Gambar exhibition, proceed to start off your photography discovery journey on the thrid floor. Your journey takes you through more than a century and a half of photography, their arrival in Southeast Asia, the early adoption, growth and evolution of photography in Southeast Asia. The affluent Peranakans were among the first to participate in this phenomenon thing called photography.

Walk slowly, observe each and every photograph, looks at their eyes, are they watching you watching their photograph? How and where did the subjects position themselves during a family portraiture shoot? Each and every photograph tells you their own unique story.

On the third floor where you kickstart your photography discovery adventure at The Peranakan Museum, the first section of the exhibition showcases early photography techniques that are not even commonly heard in today’s modern digital society. From albumen print, daguerreotype, negative prints, large format prints, glass plate negative, you can view and learn about the photography technology of the early days since the invention of photography.

For the photography gear heads, there is a display of old cameras, from twin lens reflex (TLR) to rangefinders, single lens reflex (SLR) cameras and modern digital cameras today. A pit stop that most (or all) photographers will stop, spend time admiring the old cameras and thinking to themselves, should I get one of those?

After you have finished admiring all the vintage analogue cameras on display, continue to the second floor of The Peranakan Museum where the Amek Gambar exhibition continues. Walking through the timezone, observe the changes in the photographs, from the studio settings, posture and positioning, clothings and fashion, the occasions when photography was brought into beyond the portraiture shoot, to the modern digital photography in today’s society.

Nowadays, there are many more sunglasses brands, models and designs available in the market. I owned other sunglasses previously and still have them today but they were not prescribed to my short sighted eyes. I have been searching for prescription sunglasses and couldn’t really find suitable ones over the years. When I read about Smarty Sunglasses by The Lens Men, I decided to read up and research more about Smarty Sunglasses and they were able to do a prescription sunglasses!

There are other alternatives too e.g. wearing contact lenses or going for lasik surgery. After weighing the options available and based on my personal preferences, I chose the prescription sunglasses method. Therefore, I decided to visit my friendly and trusted optometrist The Lens Men (my last two pair of spectacles were with them). Prior to going down, I had a chat with The Lens Men via Facebook and they were responsive to my queries.

I was lucky that The Lens Men happened to run a promotion program – Sporty September on their Facebook page in the month of September 2016 with custom Rx packages featuring Essilor’s Crizal Xperio are 30% off, I managed to make an appointment the final week of September and get my Smarty prescription sunglasses, at The Eye Site, sister company of The Lens Men! Some might feel that it’s a bit pricey for a prescription sunglasses, I view it as an investment for my photography and outdoors. I managed to raise some funds for my Smarty prescription sunglasses from selling off old smartphones during my de-cluttering process.

When I was at The Eye Site getting my Smarty sunglasses done up, I initially wanted the model S14509 because I really liked this design. However, the friendly folks at The Eye Site advised me that based on my the degrees for both my eyes, it is highly not recommended because the prescription lens will look really thick and not suitable for that particular frame. After listening to their professional and detailed explanation, I looked at other alternative models and I chose S14516 instead. I waited for about 1 week+, I was finally able to collect my Smarty Sunglasses and I realised why the folks at The Eye Site / The Lens Men advised me not to go for the initial model S14509 because my lens would be quite thick!

Finally, after searching for some time, I finally have a prescription sunglasses for my photography and great outdoors. I brought it to Hokkaido recently in October and it came in very handy when I was on Mount Tokachi, with snow on their slopes (while it is still autumn season), facing the sun and snow, my Smarty sunglasses really helped me a lot, protecting my eyes too! Although I have to lift up my Smarty sunglasses to view the photos on my LCD screen on my camera, it’s just a minor action to do and I can live with this action, as long as my eyes are protected from the glaring sun.

As a person who love the great outdoors, a photographer who shoots quite a lot outdoors too (wildlife, events, sports), a pair of sunglasses to me is a must have. Add in a prescription based sunglasses, it’s really ideal for me! I found this prescription sunglasses with the Smarty Sunglasses via The Lens Men and The Eye Site, friendly, professional and knowledgable folks, this is my third pair of glasses with them!

Time to explore more outdoors and taking photos with my prescription Smarty Sunglasses!

Corresponding with The Lens Men on Instagram via the comments, I got to know more about their Moonlight series frames, it’s their in-house label, lightweight, flexible, durable and in a variety of colours, more information can be found here on The Lens Men website. Since I was planning to change a new pair of spectacle frame and it fitted in nicely with Great Singapore Sale 2014, I decided to go down The Lens Men outlet at JEM and finally made the order for a new pair of spectacle frame. When I saw the blue colour Moonlight frame and the other colourful combinations of the Moonlight series, it was not hard for me to make a quick and fast decision, I chose the blue colour Moonlight frame that I first saw on Instgram! Since I was a return customer, The Lens Men still have my record and was able to tell me when I got my spectacle frame from them. It was 4 years ago and as I was writing up this article, I dug up my archives and found my post here when I had my first spectacle frame from The Lens Men in June 2010!

While I am not the type who change a new pair of spectacle frames every year, they have been a trusted brand with great customer service and professionalism. That’s why I do not hesitate to return back to The Lens Men for my new pair of spectacle frame after 4 years. This pair of Moonlight spectacle frame also marks a new chapter and journey for me, it’s a new start, a new beginning and a new journey ahead for my entrepreneurship direction! Maybe I will get myself a new corporate profile shot with my new Moonlight series spectacle frame!
