Insects: Microsculptures Magnified is making its Southeast Asia debut at ArtScience Museum on 17th January 2026, get up and personal with giant insects, with images towering up to 7 feet high. This exhibition showcases larger-than-life realm of insects, observe the beauty and intricacy of the insects forms far beyond what the naked eye can perceive.

“Insects: Microsculptures Magnified is ArtScience Museum’s first exhibition on insects. It invites audiences to reconsider these often-overlooked creatures as complex, beautifully structured, and essential to life on Earth. Created in collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History and enriched by scientific research from Singapore institutions including Nanyang Technological University, the National University of Singapore, and A*STAR, the exhibition brings global perspectives into dialogue with local discovery. The exhibition reveals how in Singapore’s forests and laboratories, scientists are making discoveries that sound almost unbelievable—beetles that clean ecosystems, cicadas that inspire futuristic materials, and bugs never before seen by science. The exhibition speaks directly to Singapore’s active nature and wildlife photography communities, inviting them to look more closely at the insect world,” said Honor Harger, Vice President of ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands.

“The opportunity to display Microsculpture at ArtScience Museum is without doubt a highlight for the project and one that I could never have imagined when photographing the first insect. It is hugely satisfying to see the images enjoyed by different audiences around the world and it is clear evidence of a public appreciation and curiosity for these incredible creatures,” said Levon Biss.

“Each photograph is created from over 8,000 individual images using a bespoke photo rig and microscope lenses. This achieves extreme levels of detail, allowing visitors to experience and appreciate microscopic textures and adaptations that would otherwise be lost to the naked eye. It’s both a technical challenge and an opportunity to celebrate the ingenuity of life at a tiny scale, a mixture of entertainment and education. By bringing these minute forms to monumental size, the exhibition invites viewers to look closely, to wonder, and care about the beauty and significance of these ingenious creatures we share this planet with,” he added.

Start of a brand new day, new week, it’s Monday 1st January 2024, we are now kickstarting a fresh new start to a new year 2024. Wishing my family, friends, and followers a Happy New Year 2024! Some of us might be recovering from a new year eve party or celebration, some of us might keep it low key instead. Nevertheless, hope you all have a good time or rest. For a change, I didn’t head out to shoot New Year Eve countdown fireworks at Marina Bay or in the heartland neighbourhoods, I chose to stay at home and rest instead.

First and foremost, to my friends, networks, brands, agencies in the photography, travel, heritage, creative and arts industry, I promise to clear my backlogs that I promised earlier in November and December 2023. I was kind of fatigued while juggling on a few different fronts and concurrently preparing for year 2024.

I would be sharing about my year 2023 in review for my photography (business and personal), travel, creative sectors in arts and writing, heritage sectors in history, heritage, conservation and preservation segments. Next up would be my yearly theme for 2024 for my photography, travel creative and heritage sectors, a different method and approach that I have been using for a few years, something different and away from the usual goals and objectives setting approach.

The year 2024 is paved with economic uncertainties and challenges, geo-political tensions across different regions around the world is worrying with potential pitfalls and spillovers in both political and business areas. This year 2024 might be more challenging for some of us, it might give us new opportunities for us as well.

In 2024, I look forward to more in-depth, lively and interesting discussions, interviews and networking sessions with photographers, filmmakers, the folks from the travel, tourism and hospitality industry, brands and organisations that I am working with, as well as content creators and artists.

Wishing my family, friends, and followers, Happy New Year 2024!

I welcome New Year 2022 in a very different way, no fireworks just photographing commercial ships berthed off the coast of East Coast Park firing their flares into the sky when the time strikes 12 midnight with photography friends Belinda, CK and William. Although I didn’t get my money shot of a lightning strike hitting the Straits of Singapore along with the flares, my 3 other friends got their money shot!

The exhibition titled, “Painting With Light” will be open to members of the public until 16th May 2021 and it’s part of OPPO’s #AwakenColour campaign, in line with the launch of its latest premium flagship smartphone, the OPPO Find X3 Pro.

I previously covered OPPO smartphones R9, R9S and R11, R11s and R11s Plus on my TGH Technology and Business portal/blog and reviewed the smartphone camera R11, here on my TGH Photography and Travel portal/blog. When I visited the “Painting With Light” photography exhibition by OPPO, I checked out the photography works by the local photographers who had their works featured and I was impressed by the quality coming out from a smartphone camera.

“Painting With Light” showcases photography works shot using the 10-bit colour depth of the Find X3 Pro by four talented lens-based local photographers Wilfred Lim (@__wilfredlim), Venus Oh (@venusproblematics), Kimberly Kiong (@hiimkiim) and Adele Chan (@adelechan), the exhibition seeks to encourage photography enthusiasts to discover the colour palettes of our city, as well as invite them to pay attention to their surroundings through images that encapsulate the familiarity of everyday scenes, places and objects.

Visual feast for the eyes at the ‘Painting With Light’ exhibition

Titled ‘Garden City’, this series of images by Wilfred Lim is a visual exploration of wild plants found by the artist throughout the neighbourhoods of Singapore. Shot entirely in his makeshift studio, Wilfred employs saturated colours to give these unnoticed plants a sublime beauty.

‘Lumina’, the series of intimate portraits and moving images by Venus Oh, reveals the different facades of Singapore at night. Beyond this, it also provides a window into the subjects’ state of mind, inviting viewers to look more closely into their lives and immediate surroundings.

‘Gleamings’, the name given to Kimberly Kiong’s series of images, is a multi-layered visual log of people tending to the objects they value and care for. The images – soft, hazy, and dream-like, carry with them deeply personal anecdotes and prompt viewers to reflect on the objects, and people, they hold dear.

Lastly, ‘Food for Thought’ by Adele Chan, provides a visual appreciation of popular food items and ingredients that commonly make their way to the dining table. Thanks to the 60 times magnification of the microlens of the Find X3 Pro, Adele was able to unveil colours and details hidden from the naked eye. These images create imaginary tales in the macro realm, inviting viewers to look closer at what they eat.

According to Mr Dylan Yu, Marketing Director, OPPO Singapore, “It’s a great honour to be collaborating with Wilfred, Venus, Kimberly and Adele for our ‘Painting With Light Exhibition. OPPO has always stayed true to our commitment of supporting local creatives – right from our Reno series till our Find series now, for the OPPO Find X3 Pro.

“These photographers have put in so much thought and creativity into their images, with each one of them holding a story that visitors will get to find out more about at the exhibition. We’re excited to be sharing these images with the larger community in Singapore and more importantly, to also share with the public our Find X3 Pro’s camera prowess and how the images shot using the smartphone will awaken their senses to a wider range of colours.”

Involvement of the community in exploring the palettes of Singapore

Beyond the works of the photographers, the ‘Painting with Light’ exhibition will also feature works from the community.

Earlier this month, OPPO allowed the public to sign up for an opportunity to trial the OPPO Find X3 Pro, and join OPPO and the local photographers in discovering the unique colours of our city. Out of these sign-ups, a total of 35 were chosen for the consumer trial, lasting two weeks. All participants were required to share the images they captured using the Find X3 Pro on their social media platforms. Following which, on 5 April, the ultimate winner, Steven Sung Hong Meng (@photographyholic), was announced, and he walked away with an OPPO Find X3 Pro.

Images from Steven, along with a few more by other participants specially identified, will also be displayed digitally at the photography exhibition at ArtScience Museum.

In the current world that we live in, constantly filled with unrelentless updates, sharing and exchanges on social media networks, do you ever feel the stress, fatigue, anxiety and anger from this era of digital connectivity? Do you ever feel the need and desire to move away from all these digital connections and into a world of Minimalism of space, light and object?

What is Minimalism all about? What does Minimalism mean to you? Minimalism – Space, Light, Object, what is this all about?

I had been exploring and discovering Minimalism, through my own interpretation using black and white landscape photography. This was my personal philosphical approach to Minimalism. As I started to explore more, through decluttering, furnishings, home designs, Japanese Zen, Minimalism becomes an avenue, a world for me to move into and away from all the digital world out there today.

My personal exploration and discovering Minimalism took place over the past few years, an experiential journey of self discovery and understanding. Then there was this exhibition titled, “Minimalism – Space Light Object”, organised by National Gallery Singapore in collaboration with ArtScience Museum.

I visited Minimalism – Space Light Object exhibitions at National Gallery Singapore and ArtScience Museum, this is like a time machine journey that goes back in time into the 1960s when Minimalism first came to life through artistic tendency, developing, changing and evolving over time into the modern 21st century today. Digging in further and doing more research into Minimalism, I found this article titled “The Intellectual Origins of Minimalism” by Blair Asbury Brooks published on Artspace. If you are like me, exploring and discovering Minimalism, I high recommend you to read this article!

From abstract art form and artworks, beyond the frame to incorporate environmental, social and political contexts. Making significant impacts to lifestyle, fashion, design, arts, music, performance, Minimalism began to establish itself as a global modern contemporary art and lifestyle.

From 16th November 2018 to 14th April 2019, the first Minimalism-focused exhibition is presented for the first time in Southeast Asia at Singapore’s two leading cultural institutions, National Gallery Singapore and ArtScience Museum.

At National Gallery Singapore, the exhibition depicts the birth, development and legacies of Minimalism from the 1950s to the modern day, with more than 100 artworks on display from Europe, to the United States and Asia. The ideas of presence and absence, influenced by Asian philosophies such as Zen Buddhism.

Meanwhile, at the ArtScience Museum, the exhibition there depicts the themes of colour, exploring form and spirituality, through notions of emptiness, nothingness, space, the universe and beyond, influenced by eastern philosophies and science.

As I started upon this Minimalism – Space Light Object journey at National Gallery Singapore and ArtScience Museum, a self-discovery adventure, understanding the artists’ artworks and perspectives towards Minimalism. Although I wasn’t able to understand all of them, I did manage to connect with some minimalist artworks.

What does Minimalism means to you, to me?

This Minimalism journey can be a very personal thing inside you, that you may want to explore and discover for yourself. I strongly and highly recommend you to visit Minimalism – Space Light Object exhibitions at National Gallery Singapore and ArtScience Museum.

Feel it, step away from the digital world for a few hours, engage yourself with the minimalist artworks, re-discover yourself again and how you change your approach to the modern life and society in another way.

Take your time and do not rush, immerse and engage yourself with/and into the Minimalism artworks. Open up your heart, eyes and soul, look beyond the frame, space, light and object. Do check out the photographs that I took at Minimalism – Space Light Object inside my Flickr photography album.

Personally, I was able to learn other approaches to my Minimalism discovery, through space and object, artworks and abstract perspectives, that I may apply to my personal Minimalism photography, where the light always shines through.

This is what Minimalism means to me, through my black and white landscape photography.
