Excitement and Anxiety

I am excited and anxious at the same time when you hold your work in a physical book format. In a world whereby so much things/work are intangible, digital and online, having a tangible form of your work on hand brings me immense pride and joy. 

I am anxious too, the pressure and stress that I imposed on myself to produce and deliver quality work in my photography and writing. This personal work/zine/book of mine might be a blessing to some, it might also not meet the standards and views of some. Nevertheless, that’s the kind of life we are currently living.

My second photography zine meant something deep, unique and special to me, I would share more when I officially announce and launch this photography zine when it goes into full printing mode.

Review, Edit and Amendments

I made a decision to print out mock up copies of my second photography zine, making it easier for review, editing and making final amendments. This would also make things easier when I bring it to local printing house Grenadier Press for discussion.

This mock up is estimated to be 90-95% ready, just some final editing and amendments and it’s good to go for official printing.

I am arranging to meet and catch up with a few friends, I would seek their views on how I am able to improve my layout, font selection. I estimate all these would take about 2-4 weeks, meanwhile during this period, I would be having a chat with local printing house Grenadier Press. I have previously engaged their printing services for my first photography book in 2015.

Once my final reviewed, amended and edited photography zine is ready, I would upload it to MagCloud platform for my international supporters/followers/readers to purchase. As for those in Singapore, I would share more in detail once finalised how I would go about doing it.

Printing multiple high-quality photos can be costly in the long run. The PIXMA G570 and G670 are designed to address this challenge and to deliver high yields. Assemble your photos like members of a band

Curating a gallery wall for your home is like the assembly of the Beatles. The right grouping takes time & intent because some photos (bandmates) work, others do not or you have to try something different (a la Pete Best versus Ringo). Find your anchor pieces or great stand-alone (Lennon-McCartney), then curate other photos using balance, symmetry, uniform and similar themes, size and color to tell the story on your wall like the 1964 Beatles polished look. Develop a sense of timelessness

There’s nothing as timelessly elegant as a series of black & white portraits, matted and framed, and hung in a custom wall display. One favorite is a collection of mismatched, but complimentary frames (an assortment of rustic woods, gold, silver, black) in different shapes & sizes, laid out sporadically on a wall and added to over time. Another popular layout is to place assorted sized frames on shelves, one on top of the other, or staggered on a wall (perfect for smaller spaces). I also love the look of a collection of images in identical frames, either symmetrically matted or “top-heavy”, with a horizontal photo matted towards the top of a vertical frame. Establish a midline

One great way to start a unique gallery wall is to hang three frames either centered on the same midline or lined up level on the same top or bottom line. Then as you want to add to the gallery wall you just maintain that line and build it out horizontally. I find it most aesthetically pleasing when a photo gallery consists of either a focal point with complimentary images arranged around it, or evenly distributed images with straight lines and exact sizes. Things to consider when framing

Two tips for ensuring your photo gallery is always fresh with great photos: #1: when you go to frame a photo, make another couple of prints of other photos, and place them behind the print you intend to display. Keep it cohesive

When creating a photo gallery wall, the only rule you really need to follow is to keep things cohesive within a theme. So if you choose to use all white frames, you can vary the sizes and styles to create interest. Or you can pull together all different types of framing but then create cohesion by showcasing black and white photography in all of them. This will allow you to add on to your gallery over time without it being obvious. There are five distinct art books being featured (Roots, Dreamscape, Memoirs, Noir and Jaba). These limited-edition collection was recently showcased at Fuji Xerox Singapore’s Print Reimagined event that took place from 9th to 10th December 2020 (check out my coverage on Fuji Xerox Innovation Re:Mix Forum Work Reimagined 2020 on my technology portal/blog) The art books were printed on Fuji Xerox’s Iridesse Production Printer, bringing the hyper-realistic and abstract graffiti concept artworks translated into print.

The art works are inclined towards a graffiti wild style, purposely designed to bring out the brilliance of Fuji Xerox’s Production Printer, Iridesse. As part of the production process, Didier and “Kiat” collaborated closely with Fuji Xerox to bring the best out of Iridesse speciality Dry Inks Gold, Silver, White, Pink and Clear in their printing output.

What are the five distinct art books all about? Let’s take a walk through the graffiti wild style world 

Roots

Roots highlights some of Didier’s earlier works on the numerous graffiti and murals painted all over the world during his time in some of the countries that Didier lived in (Australia, Thailand, Brazil, China, Germany, Singapore, Spain, Columbia and Israel)

Dreamscape

The digital art creation by Didier, conceived as a hyper-realistic piece that takes the form of real images and reimagined into new possibilities. Didier draws inspirations from his travels, documenting intimate ways of rethinking architectural features into futuristic worlds. 

Memoirs

Using a different approach, featuring a collection of photographs shot by Didier throughout his travels all over the world through his smartphone camera. These photographs hold fond memories of the people he met and places he has visited. 

This particular art book would probably resonate most with me since I am a photographer!

Noir

This is inspired by Fuji Xerox Iridesse speciality White Dry Ink. It’s a timeless piece that shows black-white dualism that pushes the possibilities of printing on matt-coasted black paper. Didier and Kiat created this book to experiment and showcase the White Dry Ink’s high brightness and opacity that contrasts favourably against a black canvas. 

JABA

Kiat was given full artistic control to experiment and recreate Didier’s pieces in his own style for this particular book. Utilising the brilliance of Fuji Xerox Iridesse vivid Pink Dry Ink, this adds an astounding pop-of-colour that is not seen in other books. Unique to Kiat’s creative approach, the artwork flaunts a divergent perspective on Didier’s work, through the eyes of another fellow artist. 

Personal Thoughts 

In a modern social media, technology and internet driven world today, while creative works can be viewed online by people from all over the world. Nothing beats having their own creative works showcased in its original art form or published and printed that can people can touch, feel and connect with the creatives/artists masterpieces and artworks. 

As a photographer myself, the art of printing (from small photo prints to offset photo book prints) is an area that I have rediscovered again since I lost touch for a period of time when I moved from film to digital. 

Personally, it’s great to see companies such as Fuji Xerox helping and supporting the creative community through their expertise in digital printing technology, bringing their artworks and masterpieces to life. While my creative skills are not in the fields of drawing and painting, I do appreciate and would try to support the creatives community whenever I am able to. 

I do get inspiration from other creatives and artists in different fields and genres, maybe one day, I am able to collaborate with them and produce cross interdisciplinary creative works with other creatives and publish a book on it!

This experience was something that I haven’t experienced for a long time, since I stopped shooting film that might be around 1999 to 2000. With the proliferation and expansion of everything digital, DSLRs, digital compact cameras, mirror less cameras and smartphones. Photography was getting easier and less expensive for people to enter and take photographs. This experience was both good and bad for the photography community.

When photography goes digital, along with the exponential growth and expansion of the Internet and social media. Photography changed to be instant and electrifying fast paced. Besides that, a lot more photographs were taken and many photographs were probably stored in your hard disk drive somewhere, whether it is desktop, laptop, and portable or home/work station. Now, our photographs are even stored in the Cloud system. Having said that, I am part of this trend and it does come to a point when there is a bit of stagnation from over proliferation of photography, yet there is a need to change and adapt in this modern era. We all probably are guilty of taking too many photographs, and storing them somewhere in our various photography devices.

Photography faces the crunch and test of instant gratification on the social media channels, the ruthless demands of instant updates and happenings. At times, I am wondering how many photographers face burnt out from such demands and expectations? When the photographs were uploaded on social media channels, where would they be after a while? Lost in Internet World Wide Web? Or in your Facebook, Twitter accounts?

After printing out the 4R photographs, I went on to prepare my draft Hokkaido B&W Landscapes Photo Book and printed it out via iPhoto. I can’t describe the experiences and euphoria that I felt when I held my draft photo book on my hands. The feelings and experiences were even higher than holding on to my 4R photographs. Finally, I was able to experience and felt why my photographer friends loved to print their photo books and continue to produce more outstand photo books showcasing their brilliant works.

While I was preparing my Hokkaido B&W Photo Book, I was also planning a personal photography exhibition with A3 photo prints. I managed to obtain from Canon Singapore, the PIXMA Pro-10 printer for a review and to print out my A3 photographs while planning how I can go about doing my photography exhibition. This post was also partially written as a pre-cursor to the upcoming Canon PIXMA Pro-10 review.

I loved my recent print outs, from 4R, A4 size photo book, A4 size photo prints and A3 size photo prints. Let’s go back to the days of printing film, like printing a 36 roll of film and apply it towards our digital photography lifestyle today.

Let it be 4R size, A4 size or A3 size photographs. Be selective, curate and print your photographs, share them around, show it to your family, relatives and friends, hang it on your walls, give it away as gifts or if there is a buyer, make that transaction!

I hope we can start to encourage each other to start printing photographs again!
