Canon PhotoMarathon XVI Singapore was different from the past few editions that I participated in. They had a bright, colourful and refreshing concept, starting with the event t-shirt that is luminious green in colour (that looks a bit like the safety vest as pointed out by fellow photographer friend Daryl) that makes us stood out, very brightly and prominently from the crowds when the participants were out photographing their respective competition themes. In this edition of Canon PhotoMarathon XVI, Canon introduced a new ‘dusk’ challenge in the competition format for the first time. This will enable participants to capture a dynamic mix of both day and night scenes, putting their photography skills and creativity to the test.

Inside the Suntec Convention Centre event hall, the booths and stations were interactive and fun, bright and colourful, pretty engaging for the younger generation folks, beside the regular sponsors that had been supporting Canon PhotoMarathon. We had a radio DJ booth, ONE FM 91.3 making radio waves at Canon PhotoMarathon XVI.

Celebrities were also present at Canon PhotoMarathon XVI Singapore, gracing and supporting it, with Sora Ma and Joseph Schooling making their presence felt at the event, chatting and interacting with their supporters.  I had a good time chatting  and catching up with Sora! At the end of the Canon PhotoMarathon XVI Singapore, I completed my 8^thedition participating in this iconic photography competition that was born in Singapore and it has now spread to regional countries such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Brunei, Cambodia, China and Sri Lanka.

Although I didn’t win any prizes during my 8 editions of Canon PhotoMarathon that I participated in. It’s alright with me, participating in Canon PhotoMarathon is not just about winning  the wonderful prizes (although I would love to win a prize someday!) this is also about community, networking, catching up with Canon Imaging Academy, EOS World community and making new friends.

All these various aspects of Canon PhotoMarathon XVI experiences from photography to community, live up to Canon’s motto “Delighting You Always”. Remember to keep shooting, sharing and printing!

I made my maiden debut competing in Canon PhotoMarathon in the year 2008, followed by 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017. From the links, you can read my personal stories during my years of participation, including the various unique, interesting and challenging Canon PhotoMarathon themes during my seven years of participation!

Looking back at my different years of participation, they were some good memories, participating together with friends and taking photographs together in groups for the submission of the competition themes. There were also times when I shot alone, a time whereby I am able to challenge and push myself in the areas of photography creativity, shooting a photography theme under a limited timeline and pressure during the Canon PhotoMarathon competition format. Even though I never won anything during my years of participation, it had always been fulfiling and fun, observing other photographers point of view, how they compose and shoot their photographs based on the same competition themes.

No doubt this is a photography competition with very attractive prizes to be won, Canon PhotoMarathon had always been a fun community event in Singapore for photographers to gather, have fun, catch up, challenge themselves in a fun yet photography challenging competition. Over the past few years, I had seen the organisers making improvements and changes, this year’s Canon PhotoMarathon 2018 looks to be something special and refreshing, with a new competition format and also giving back to the community.

What makes Canon PhotoMarathon Singapore 2018 XVI special and different this year? Did you read about my earlier article on Canon Singapore announcement on their two sports sponsorship agreements, someone very special is going to make an appearance!

Who is coming down? Now, let me share more information below:

Back for its 16^th year, Canon PhotoMarathon XVI is slated on 28 July at Suntec City Convention Hall 401-402, from 9am to 10pm. This year, Canon is taking a step further by giving back to the community and also introducing exciting new elements such as a ‘dusk’ challenge in the competition format.

In line with Canon’s ongoing support of the local sporting scene, Canon has recently announced a partnership with Joseph Schooling, who will be present at the Canon PhotoMarathon XVI. Canon has also pledged to donate all event registration fees collected to The Straits Times Pocket Money Fund (STSPMF), a community project to fund school-going childrenfrom low-income families.

“This year, we would like to encourage the photography community to test their creative mettle and at the same time, contribute back to the community,” said Mr. Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Domestic Operations, Canon Singapore. “Canon PhotoMarathon is not just a competition of photography skills and creativity, it is also a test of one’s endurance and stamina. With Joseph Schooling present at this year’s competition, we hope that participants will be inspired by his tenacity and rigour to achieve big dreams, much like how he attained Singapore’s first Olympic gold medal.” 

Chase the Light, Day to Night

True to its name, Canon PhotoMarathon is a blend of photography and sports. For participants to cross the finishing line, both mental and physical endurance are required for the full-day competition.

While the format of the competition remains the same with three competition themes, this year’s event will kick off at a later timing of 11am with the announcement of the first theme. For the first time, Theme 3 will incorporate a ‘dusk’ challenge, which will be announced at 5pm and the closing submission time for this final theme will be at 8pm. This will enable participants to capture a dynamic mix of both day and night scenes, putting their photography skills and creativity to the test.

Participants will have three hours from the announcement to submit a photo which demonstrates a unique perspective in picture composition according to the assigned theme. Adding an additional element of surprise to the mix, participants will have a say in voting for one of the competition themes this year.

Top prizes for artistic creativity

There will be a total of more than S$50,000 worth of Canon products to be won. In addition, all registered participants will stand a chance to win a pair of Lufthansa air tickets to Munich in the lucky draw segment.

Apart from attractive category prizes, the Best of Show winners from the Open and Student categories will win an exclusive spot each in the Canon PhotoMarathon Asia Championship held in 2019, which is valued at more than US$5,000. The all-expenses paid trip will bring participants on an exclusive journey of awe-inspiring scenery, to explore various facets of photography under the tutelage of a professional photographer. The Championship will involve further theme challenges to select the champion among winners. 

Collaboration with Joseph Schooling

In support of Canon PhotoMarathon which seeks to inspire and bring the photography community closer, Joseph will be at the event to unveil one of the competition themes.

Synonymous to sports, which rallies our community closer together, photography has the powerful ability to transcend differences and connect people from all walks of life.

Giving Back for the Common Good

Kyosei, which means living and working together for the common good, lies at the heart of Canon’s corporate philosophy. In the spirit of this belief, all registration fees collected from Canon PhotoMarathon this year will be donated to the STSPMF. This is a community project started by The Straits Times in 2000, to provide pocket money to children from low income families to help them with school-related expenses.

In addition, a charity sales of limited edition prints, specially curated by The Straits Times photo desk and The Schooling Company, will be held from 20 to 26 July via shop.canon.com.sg/charity and all proceeds will be donated to STSPMF.

It’s not just about photography competition, wanting to win the attractive prizes, this is also about community and giving back, the photography community and the Singapore community coming together and being together through the fun and love of photography.

I am going for my no. 8^thCanon PhotoMarathon, it’s not so much of a photography competition for me, this is more of a photography community, networking with fellow professionals and gathering of old photography friends, making new photography friends, having fun and giving back to the Singapore community.

Now in its 15^th year, the Canon PhotoMarathon has spread her presence to other parts of Asia, with parallel competitions taking place in countries such as Brunei, Cambodia, China Mainland, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam!

On a personal note, Canon PhotoMarathon 2017 Singapore is my 7^th year (out of 15 years) participating (2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017) in this photography competition. It had always been interesting, challenging and tiring for me participating in it, pushing myself and my photography skills, knowledge and experiences, under pressure and time limits over all those years. Even though, I haven’t won any of the competitions, I always had fun and enjoyment, chatting with photographer friends, in some ways, it was a gathering and catch up with some of my photographer friends!

What were the three themes for Canon PhotoMarathon 2017? Here are the themes-

From my personal experiences over the years participating in Canon PhotoMarathon, when the themes look/seem “easy”, that only means it can be pretty wide open to each photographer’s interpretation and ideas, or it can also mean that the theme might be a bit narrow and somehow a bit tricky. This is something unique, that makes Canon PhotoMarathon special, fun and challenging for an intense one day of photography competition under time limits and pressure.

Here are my submissions for the Canon PhotoMarathon 2017 Singapore. Reflecting back on my submissions:

I was a bit stuck for theme 2, thus that photograph was a bit more of an abstract style. Nevertheless, I am glad to push myself in a relaxed manner during the competition. The beauty of photography is that of each one of us have our own personal interpretation, conceptualisation and composition. This is also a time for me to reflect on the photographs that I took during the competition, how I can improve on them and learn from my experiences. Learning in photography never stops, no matter what level of photography you are in, whether amateur, serious enthusiast, freelance or professional.

In the 15^th edition of Canon PhotoMarathon 2017 Singapore, the organisers gave out a finisher medal and certificate of participation for participants that completed all three themes! Kudos to the Canon PhotoMarathon 2017 Singapore organising committee for making the 15^th edition special and fun!

Although I haven’t won anything prizes from the years that I had participated in Canon PhotoMarathon, I hope that my through my sharing of my stories and experiences over the years would help future Canon PhotoMarathon participants from Singapore, other parts of Southeast Asia and Asia in one small way or another!

With my participation in Canon PhotoMarathon XIV, this is my 6^th year participating in this photography competition (I participated in years 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016). The Canon PhotoMarathon was more than just a photography competition, it’s also a time for photography enthusiasts to get together and have fun taking photographs together (and also helping each other to get their shots for the competition!). Participating in Canon PhotoMarathon is also a time for me to catch up and chat with photography friends from Canon Singapore, Canon Imaging Academy, EOS World Singapore and also making new photography friends there too!

Before I proceed to share on what were the three themes for Canon PhotoMarathon XIV and what I shot, let me share about photography for everyone in the society that took place during this year’s Canon PhotoMarathon.

Canon’s corporate philosophy of kyosei – living and working together for the common good, was part of Canon PhotoMarathon XIV program. Canon’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program partner with the Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN) and Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) to host more than 30 participants, giving them the opportunity to partake in the excitement of Canon PhotoMarathon. It was really great to see photography playing a part for those participants to enjoy, giving them an avenue to express themselves through photography and enjoying photography during the Canon PhotoMarathon. I reckoned that the participants from Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN) and Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) had a very interesting time shooting the themes for Canon PhotoMarathon XIV!

What were the themes for Canon PhotoMarathon XIV? This year 2016 themes were different, a little bit special and my usual “I scratch my head and don’t know what to shoot” moment till I absorbed and digested the individual theme before knowing/planning what I want to shoot.

The three themes of Canon PhotoMarathon XIV were

Theme 3: #NoFilter + #NewPerspective +#Space

Here were what I shot and submitted for Themes 2 and 3 for Canon PhotoMarathon XIV (I did not submit for Theme 1 because I was away for a photography assignment that morning although I did my own Theme 1 shoot though)

Shooting Theme 2 was very challenging for me, this theme also got me thinking very hard, on conceptualisation, creating stories to tell and how I can constantly improve, no matter what is the level of photography experience and knowledge that I am currently at right now.

Although at the end of Canon PhotoMarathon XIV, it can be very tiring physically after moving around and rushing against time to get the photographs for competition submission. The overall experiences had always been good, the fun, friendships and the love for photography. Participating in Canon PhotoMarathon over the years gave me an opportunity to learn, unlearn and relearn my photography. Lifelong learning and improvements apply in my photography journeys till date and it is still ongoing as always!

Canon PhotoMarathon is not just about competition and winning the wonderful prizes, it’s also about learning and fun with photography friends. Given a photography theme to shoot within a short period of 3 hours, it’s a pretty big and interesting challenge for all photographers, regardless of the level of photography you are at, whether you are beginner, amateur, freelancer or professional. The time pressure, creativity and relevance are put to the test for any photographer, this “test” will definitely push a photographer higher and that’s where a photographer can improve.

If you have just started learning and exploring photography, Canon PhotoMarathon is a good and fun event to participate with your fellow photographers in a group. Not only can you learn, shoot and challenge yourself, this would give you a great opportunity to make new photography friends and forge a stronger group bonding.

If you have been into photography for a period of time, this might be a good opportunity to test and push your photography level even further, either alone or a with a smaller group of photography friends.

Canon PhotoMarathon is not just about photography competition. There is also a time for the Canon Experience – The Canon PhotoMarathon is a flagship event that engages shutterbugs from all walks of life and provides consumers with a positive Canon experience. Following the launch of the Canon Try and Buy Lens Programme in March this year, Canon is introducing to the Canon PhotoMarathon Try & Buy lens booth where participants get to rent and test out a wide range of Canon lenses. Furthermore, participants will also have a chance to take a look at rarely seen Canon medical equipment and enterprise products from other Canon business units.

The Canon PhotoMarathon allows me to train and hone my creativity in photography, within a stipulated time frame, brain and creativity juices flowing with adrenaline for each of the 3 themes announced during Canon PhotoMarathon. This year, I was shooting alone since my friends were in different groups throughout the event and I needed to drop by into office not too far away from Suntec City Convention Centre during the event itself and prepare some work matters while still competing in the Canon PhotoMarathon! Shooting alone this year helps me to shoot well, although it will be just as fun to have a group of photographer friends to go out and shoot with during Canon PhotoMarathon and having fun together!

What were the 3 themes for Canon PhotoMarathon 2013 and what did I submit for the 3 themes? Here are the 3 themes and my submissions:

Reflecting back on my submissions for Canon PhotoMarathon 2013, it will definitely add more to my accumulating photography experiences especially in finding creative angles/perspectives in a short stipulated time, this is something that will come in handy and useful when I am working on photography projects/assignments and there might be a need to think fast and furious in the shoot settings and conditions.

The Canon PhotoMarathon is a very fun, interesting and very challenging photography competition. It consists of three segments in which participants are required to create images according to the various themes that will be announced one after another throughout the one-day competition. The Canon PhotoMarathon X started at 9 a.m. and is expected to continue over the next 5 hours, culminating with the announcement of the winners at the end of the day.

The competition, which is in its 10th year, will also feature a Celebrity Challenge. Under this challenge, local celebrities — The Muttons, Jade Seah, Ross, Dawn Yeo and Nat Ho — will compete against each other based on the theme for the afternoon segment of the competition. Canon will be donating S$5,000 to the winning celebrity’s charity of choice.

The themes announced during Canon PhotoMarathon never fail to amaze me. They challenge and push my photography to a new level, especially on the creativity segment, thinking out of the box and beyond my current field and scope of photography. I had a great time shooting together with Ted (and helping each other pose) for Theme 1 and Theme 2, walking around the Gardens By The Bay, Marina Bay Sands, Suntec City, Merlion Park, Clifford Pier, One Fullerton, Marina Bay and Marina Promontory.

I confessed that by the time I started Theme 3, I was quite drained out mentally and physically from the past few days fatigue adding up. Therefore, my Theme 3 wasn’t fantastic at all. Canon PhotoMarathon is not just about competition, it’s also about fun and enjoying photography with your friends and making new photography friends. This year, I was with a group of photography friends, Sue, Amanda and met Andy for the first time, we were there as a group shooting the themes together for Canon PhotoMarathon 2011. Spotted many other friends too from the social media/blogging community and my juniors from Dragon Scout Group! It wasn’t just about shooting photographs, challenging our creativity and photography and going for the prizes, it’s also about enjoying the art of photography, making new friends, observing and learning from other photographers style, perspective and composition. During our PhotoMarathon, we had a number of tea and meal breaks, relaxing and taking photos at the same time!

What are the themes for Canon PhotoMarathon Singapore 2011 ?

Theme 1 : Eat

Theme 2 : Circle

Theme 3 : Imagine

Nothing short of challenging themes, sometimes a simple word is just as difficult and a “difficult” word is just as wide in your imagination to capture an image. My photograph submissions for the above themes were those few and reflecting on my Canon PhotoMarathon 2011, it’s another humbling and enriching experience for me, learning from different photographers perspective and composition.

It’s about the topic on creativity, in photography and in life too, something that I am lacking in and it might take a while to induce the creativity inside me or I am really not too much of a creative person. The photography works submitted had a number of eye opening and powerful photographs that showcase their unique creativity and interpretation of the themes. The Canon PhotoMarathon photography event is a great way for me to train and improve my creativity (in photography and life too) and it would be great that I based on abstract or special meaningful themes to photograph while I am outside on photography walkabout!

Reflecting on my maiden adventure, my first photography competition, it was a great eye-opener for me. Having taken up paid assignments in weddings and events, the feeling, thoughts and emotions were very different. There was a sharing by Tristan, a professional photographer, who would be bringing the overall winner to New Zealand for photography trip, he got me thinking,

Seems like in my quest in my maiden photography competition, I put aside my 2 extreme importance factors that makes a photograph good or world class

– Passion for anything Photography

– Eye for Photography

If you are a photographer, you would definitely understand what I am writing here……

It’s time to relieve the passion and eye for photography, enjoying what photography can do, for leisure, recreation and how it can impact a person’s life.

Moving foward, what and how can my photography make an impact to a person’s life ?

This is what that will get me taking my photography to another level that I always wanted to, and I would do it with my photojournalistic blog.
