Celebrating Founder’s Day is a reminder to myself on how joining the Scouting movement back in my secondary school days changed, impacted and taught me lifelong skills, lessons and friendships for life, from the day I joined Gan Eng Seng Dragon Scout Group. 

My love for nature and outdoors, appreciating and learning more about the areas of heritage, history, culture, conservation and preservation through Dragon Scout Group rich and long history, life skills. This is like one big extended family (Dragon Scout Group and Dragon Chapter), the friendships and bonds that will last our lifetime, they are priceless and invaluable.

Due to the ongoing global pandemic situation since 2020 impacting and changing how we work, live, study, we weren’t sure how DSG 100th year anniversary celebrations in 2022 are going to turn out. Prior to the DSG 100 campfire, Singapore’s safety management measures were relaxed, opening up opportunities for us old boys and girls to make a trip back home to our Dragon Scout Group family.

Coming back home to the Dragon Scout Group family with fellow Dragon Chapter members, catching up with my seniors who taught me Scouting, outdoors and life skills during my secondary school days. Personally, it was full of nostalgia when DSG 100 campfire began a virtual history tour from 1922 to 2022. I remembered my first major participation in key DSG anniversary celebrations, starting from 75th anniversary celebrations, the 85th anniversary celebrations (I was helping out in the campfire committee and dinner committee, supporting the 85th anniversary book publication), regularly attending annual DSG campfire, remembering my overseas trips with DSG, annual group photo taking, 90th anniversary dinner back in the school hall organised by Dragon Chapter.

This ongoing global pandemic disrupted a few years of my (and fellow old boys and girls) connection with DSG, I was worried about the disconnection and impacts caused by this pandemic. Returning back home to DSG 100, it felt really good and heart warming, to re-connect again with my alma mater.

I didn’t take as many photos at the DSG 100 campfire as compared to the pre-pandemic time, I was just happy to be back and being able to have a face-to-face re-connection with Dragon Scout Group and Dragon Chapter family together again.

Wishing Dragon Scout Group and the extended Dragon Chapter family a Happy DSG 100 Campfire! 

May the Dragon Scouting fire keeps on burning bright and strong as DSG strives towards bigger milestones ahead.

Founded in 1922, Gan Eng Seng Dragon Scout Group is one of the oldest scout troop in Singapore. A rich history and heritage not matched by many scout troops in Singapore. As for my journey in Dragon Scouting , it all started in 1990, entering into a lifelong and continuous adventure of scouting skills, life skills, friendships and camaraderie for life. I learnt more than just scouting skills and knowledge from my seniors and leaders who led by leadership, teaching and actions, passing down the scouting fire and spirit, to the juniors. We would then continue on, paying it forward and passing it on, down to our juniors and beyond that can be seen in Dragon Scouting today and into the future. In my personal tribute to former DSG Scoutmaster Mr Richard Teo, you would be to understand more in-depth what Dragon Scouting meant to me.   

Continuing this legacy, I would Pay-It-Forward and Pass-It-On whenever possible with alma mater Dragon Scout Group, I was involved in the 85th anniversary celebrations and 90th anniversary dinner organised by Dragon Chapter. From the Dragon Scout Group photo taking, campfires, group camp and annual dinner, you can view some of the photographs that I took inside this Flickr collection. 

For DSG100, I would contribute and help out whenever possible, taking into consideration the current circumstances due to the ongoing global pandemic, with the restrictions and safety measures in place. On a personal note, the Dragon Chapter family is looking at how we can support, contribute and be part of DSG100 Years in Scouting celebrations. Keep a lookout!

My love for the great outdoors, trekking, camping, going into nature and green spaces, all that came from my scouting days in Gan Eng Seng Dragon Scout Group. The life skills, scouting skills, survival skills, leadership, training and camaraderie were the foundations that shaped my adulthood. The rich history, heritage and culture of Dragon Scout Group was also instrumental in my history, heritage and culture documentation that I had been working for the past decade.

He was my history subject and PE teacher when I was in Secondary One. His teaching style made history fun and interesting, we had laughter, it was never boring and we will never fail his subject. Along with PE subject, we always look forward to it because we can play football! Who can forget his iconic dressing at that time?

He will be best remembered here, this is the legacy that he left behind for us. We will never forget his cool cowboy style with his sunglasses coupled with Bruce Lee hairstyle. He doesn’t directly train or interfere unless absolutely necessary, his trust in the scout leaders to lead, train and run the DSG unit. The leaders in turn, continue to train the next batch of leaders, continuing a lineage of leaders to return, taking over the helm, passing on this legacy to the next group of leaders.

We were blessed with many leaders who trained us, passing down their scouting knowledge, skills and many life skills that shaped us in future journeys and professional working life till today. Beyond scouting knowledge and skills, we had a close Dragon Scouting brotherhood and bonding that made us unique and special among our peers.

A small Dragon Chapter gathering with Mr Richard Teo who was visiting Singapore from Perth, this gathering was organised by Rose. I was the most junior present among my Dragon Scout/Dragon Chapter seniors, they are the ones who taught me my scouting and life skills when I started scouting in Dragon Scout Group. 

Mr Richard Teo probably don’t know me that well as compared to my seniors whom he trusted them to lead and train the Dragon Scout Group, that produced a legacy lineage of leaders who took over the helm that continued training and passing down scouting skills and knowledge to younger scouts like myself and beyond. 

I remembered telling Mr Richard Teo that I was one of his last batch of Dragon Scouts before another teacher-in-charge took over. We all had a great chat and catch up, listening to Dragon Scouting stories from his time to mine. All these are now priceless memories accompanied by some photographs that I took during the gathering, something that I was glad that I did manage to capture it down on my camera.

Legacy- Pay-It-Forward and Pass-It-On 

He’s more than just a legend, his leadership, trust in leaders and training can be seen passed down from the seniors to juniors like myself. As I moved into adulthood and working life, I continued to Pay-It-Forward and Pass-It-On, just like my seniors before me, in whatever possible ways and whenever I was able to do so, giving back at my alma mater, Dragon Scout Group.

A scout has gone home, he will always be remembered by the Dragon Scout Group and Dragon Chapter family. His legacy lives on forever in our Dragon Scout Group and Dragon Chapter family. 

Just like this DSG 90th Anniversary Dinner photo of us lighting up the DSG badge together as one family, the scouting light shines brightly and guiding us, just like his legacy, the leadership, training and mentoring that Mr Richard Teo left behind for the Dragon Scout Group and Dragon Chapter family. 

Let’s continue to Pay-It-Forward, Pass-It-On, his legacy, Onward Dragon Scouts!

What I am today, there was a big influence from my Scouting days at Dragon Scout Group, one of the oldest Scout troops in Singapore, founded in 1922. My love for the outdoors, travel, trekking, friendships and bonds that had stood the test of time (30 years with my batch mates, not out and still counting!).
