Unprecedented Reach with Zoom Flexibility between 200mm to 800mm

There are two affordable super telephoto prime lenses in Canon’s line-up, the RF800mm f/11 IS STM and RF600mm f/11 IS STM. With the announcement of the RF200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM lens, this is going to offer zoom functionality, covering the telephoto focal range that would previously require at least 3 different lenses to cover. Whether your taking a bird in flight in the distance, or a motorsports athlete in various defining moments, the versatile 200mm to 800mm focal length range (320mm to 1280mm on an APS-C camera) let users seamlessly capture both close-ups and wider shots of the same subject simultaneously. This can be achieved without being restricted by the focal length or missing out capturing the moment due to changing of lenses. Coupled with the RF Extender 2X, the coverage is extended to 1600mm (2560mm on APS-C camera) sufficient for capturing stunning close-ups of the moon.

Convenient Handheld Shooting: Lightweight and Mobile with Up to 5.5 Stops’ Built-in IS

The RF200-800mm astounding zoom range might worry some photographers, however it only weighs 2,050g and 314.1mm long. This lens is comparable in size and weight to its counterparts that end at 600mm. Personal Views and Thoughts

The RF200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM lens is going to further open up wildlife photography and sports photography at an affordable price, adding great versatility with the 200mm to 800mm focal length range, expanding a photographer’s needs/wants in both sports and wildlife photography. They would be ideal for those who are just starting into sports and/or wildlife photography, for those serious enthusiasts, I reckon. they would gladly welcome such a versatile super telephoto zoom lens especially if they are into sports and/or wildlife photography. As for professional photographers in the sports and/or wildlife segments, this might get their interest as well, as a backup or 2nd lens combo setup.

As a wildlife photographer and sports photographer, I hope to test and review the RF200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM lens when the opportunity arises, sharing my photographs, thoughts and views for this versatile telephoto zoom lens.

Singapore – A major bird migration hub + Bird migration season is coming soon 

Even though Singapore is a small country by land size, we are a major bird migration hub, just like our international hubs for aviation and shipping. Singapore is part of the East Asian-Australiasian Flyway, migratory birds making a pitstop in Singapore, giving bird photographers here in Singapore many opportunities to photograph them in action, the diversity and beauty of those migratory bird species. 

Recent research findings have also indicated that Singapore’s status as a major migratory bird hub has grown in stature, Singapore now has become the intersection of 2 major flyways, adding the Central Asian-Indian Flyway to the East Asian-Australiasian Flyway.

Bird Photography with Canon EOS R6 Mark II

In my earlier #WMBD2023 article, I shared about my bird photography with Canon EOS cameras, from Canon cameras that I previously owned or those cameras that I reviewed. For #WMBD2023 14th October, I would be sharing about my bird photography with the Canon EOS R6 Mark II camera that was recently added not too long ago into my Canon photography setup. 

My bird photography/wildlife photography tips are published earlier in May 2023 article that you can check it out, have a read if you are starting out on your bird photography adventures with Canon EOS cameras and lenses.

As the bird migration season in Singapore is just round the corner of year end 2023, I would set aside more time for bird photography with my Canon EOS R6 Mark II whenever I am able to, visiting the various nature reserves (Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Central Catchment), parks (Pasir Ris Park, Jurong Lake Gardens) and beaches for bird migration season in Singapore.

TGH Photography x Canon EOS R6 Mark II Explorer Series Production

The Canon EOS R6 Mark II has recently been added to my photography setup, with my Canon EOS 1D X Mark II making way for my new camera. Although I missed my Canon EOS 1D X Mark II, the iconic 1D series that I started to build my photography and visual storytelling. 

The Canon EOS R6 Mark II is amazing with its fast and accurate AF, high FPS, high ISO level control and quality, excellent sensor and processing engine. While I do miss the battery grip of the 1D series, the overall excellence and quality of the Canon EOS R6 Mark II is not making me miss my 1D series as much as I would thought I would be. 

Exploring and Visiting Arts

Exploring and visiting arts around Singapore with the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, it had been a great form of artistic enjoyment and therapy, away from my writing, social media and photography work. Igniting my spark on a new wave at i Light Singapore 2023, SYSNMH Wan Qing Dragon Boat Festival Open House 2023, following House of VSE Your Neighbour Artist Exhibition around Singapore (and still ongoing), heritage and cultural events Qixi Festival and NHB Racial Harmony Day 2023. 

Exploring my own backyard

The months of June to July 2023 are usually scheduled with NDP 2023 rehearsals taking place on the weekends, allowing us to photograph the NDP 2023 rehearsals action and fireworks taking place around the Marina Bay area. The NDP 2023 rehearsals were an excellent opportunity to put the Canon EOS R6 Mark II to the test.

I was also exploring the new HDB blocks in my neighbourhood, discovering new sky parks and views. Besides that, I was also chasing sunsets and super moon with a super telephoto zoom lens Sigma 150-600mm.  

Of course, getting into outdoors and nature, it had always been a form of therapy and relaxation for me. Sometimes, adding wildlife photography into my outdoors outing and exploration together as well. 

Always on the lookout for value for money 2nd hand camera accessories  

I am always on the lookout for value for money 2nd hand camera accessories and peripherals. Some of them were slowly added over time to build up my setup, while some were replacements for my photography accessories.  

I discovered this brand Wotancraft not too long ago, I admired its quality, as well as how much consideration they placed on the designs and concepts around photographers and travellers. I got myself a Wotancraft Trooper (Medium) as my own birthday gift earlier in Q1 2023.

I had invested in a number of Think Tank products, although I gave away my Shape Shifter version 1, I found a Naked Think Tank Shape Shifter 17 v2.0 at a good price and I quickly grabbed this opportunity. Since I am expanding my Think Tank setup, I have also added more different types of Think Tank pouches along the way. 

Leofoto – A brand that I have also discovered and looking into. They have a great range of quality products for photographers. The first product that I got was the Leofoto MC-50 clamp. Moving forward, I am planning to add a few more products from Leofoto!

Bird photography with EOS R7 at Jurong Bird Park

Thanks to Canon Singapore, there was another opportunity to test the EOS R7 further. We had a bird photography outing with the EOS R7 at Jurong Bird Park. I was shooting mainly with the RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens. 

While this RF-S 18-150mm kit lens is not a dedicated lens for birding, it’s a versatile general lens ideal for daily usage and travel photography. Overall, I managed to capture some nice shots of birds in action or birds in flight shots when I was at Jurong Bird Park using the EOS R7 with RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens.

Thoughts and views from short hands on with EOS R7 at Jurong Bird Park

Since I only had a short hands on experience for a few hours with the Canon EOS R7 at Jurong Bird Park. Let me share with you my experiences, here are some of my initial thoughts and views from testing the EOS R7 at Jurong Bird Park:

A familiar feel 

From my various experiences in owning, using and testing many different Canon camera models over the years, there is a familiar feel to the EOS R7, existing current Canon users would be able to get up to speed with the EOS R7 pretty quickly.

Compact and lightweight, packed with powerful technical specifications and new technological capabilities for photography, surpassing its predecessor’s EOS 7D Mark II legacy. 

Quick control dial

This is the all-new quick control dial that combines the Multi-Controller with the Multi-Directional joystick. An interesting and useful feature, small in size placed in a good position for the right thumb to touch and control. 

I like this quick control dial, this might take a bit of getting used to since this is a new design and feature on a Canon camera body.

APS-C 1.6x 

I started my Canon interchangeable lens camera (ILC) journey with the Canon EOS 300D in 2004, an APS-C 1.6x crop DSLR camera. While I have gradually moved on Canon full-frame digital cameras over the years, the Canon APS-C 1.6x crop is something that I am familiar with. 

APS-C sensors have its pros and cons, wildlife and sports photographers would welcome it for its extended reach, landscape photographers may find the wide angle field of view not to their liking and requirements. 

For those photographers who are not too used to the APS-C 1.6x crop, give yourself time to adjust your field of view and point of view when using the EOS R7, you would be fine using this camera, in time to come.

Fast and accurate auto focus (AF) + Animal Priority 

The EOS R7 AF speed is put to the test on bird photography at Jurong Bird Park. Combining its fast and accurate AF with 30 fps and Animal Priority tracking, I was able to capture the birds in flight and birds in action. 

I mentioned earlier that I was mainly using the RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM kit lens during the photography outing at Jurong Bird Park, a versatile general lens ideal for daily usage and travel photography. With EOS R7 fast and accurate AF + Animal Priority tracking, I managed to capture some nice birds in action or birds in flight shots when I was at Jurong Bird Park using the EOS R7 with RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens.

I would put this to further testing on birds and wildlife when the EOS R7 unit is available for a more thorough and in-depth review with my other Canon lenses.

In-depth and detailed review at a later time 

I am looking forward to further explore and put the Canon EOS R7 into a more in-depth and detailed review through my visual story telling adventures.

Both RF600mm f/11 and RF800mm f/11 were reviewed together with the Canon EOS R3 full-frame mirrorless camera. Inside my Canon EOS R3 review article, I shared on bringing the RF600mm f/11 and RF800mm f/11 lenses out for photography walks and wildlife shoot, part of my own short visual stories collection titled, “A TGH Photography x Canon EOS R3 Explorer Series Production”.    

Interesting lenses, why does Canon design and manufacture such type of prime lenses? That got me thinking, I finally got to test and review both lenses, let me share with you my experiences, thoughts and views.

During my photography walkabouts, I alternate between those two lenses to bring out with my other Canon lenses. The RF600mm f/11 is more versatile as it can cover more areas beside wildlife photography, it can be used for cityscape and landscape photography. However, for wildlife photography, a longer focal length is always preferred and most welcomed, thus the RF800mm f/11 is stronger in the wildlife photography segment.

Pros 

• Lightweight, compact and portable 
• Not expensive compared to the L lens 600mm and 800mm counterparts 
• Output is sharp for the f/11 lenses when shot in good light conditions
• Paired with a fast and accurate AF camera such as the Canon EOS R3, it makes RF600mm f/11 and RF800mm f/11 easy to use in good light conditions

Cons

• It’s f/11 only
• Not a fast prime lens 
• Struggle in low light situations – photos output quality is not good and autofocus (AF) is slow 

600mm f/11 vs 800mm f/11, how to choose?

Choose 600mm f/11 for both cityscape / travel / wildlife, it’s a more versatile lens that can do a good mix of photography genres when traveling overseas.

Choose 800mm f/11 for dedicated wildlife photography, the field of view is a lot more cropped and tight. 

Thoughts and Views

• Both Canon RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM lenses are good starter prime lenses for photographers starting to enter into wildlife photography.
• When used in good light conditions, it’s easy to use and can produce decent sharp photos
• The price point for both lenses, it’s value for money without breaking your personal bank owning telephoto lenses. Owning a large aperture / fast prime telephoto lens such as RF400mm f/2.8L IS USM, 600mm f/4L IS USM lenses or RF800mm f/5.6L IS USM lenses, you need the extra funds as they are very expensive.
• Both are ideal travel photography / wildlife photography lenses, it’s really lightweight, compact and portable, easy to use.

In my personal humble opinion, for those are who are looking into owning the Canon RF600mm f/11 IS STM or RF800mm f/11 IS STM lenses, a key point to take note is to know and understand the limitations of f/11, how you can make the best of those two prime f/11 lenses, and making the best use of light and timing to ensure its strengths are being tapped upon.

Photographing Singapore outdoors/nature/green areas/wildlife

With my Canon photography gear and my trusted f-stop gear backpack, going into nature and green areas, enjoying the outdoors, fresh air, it was very therapeutic for me, photographing  nature, green areas and wildlife. 

When I was testing and reviewing the Canon EOS R3 recently, revisiting the outdoors, nature and green areas in Singapore, observing the close proximity of our nature/green areas, urban areas and wildlife living together.

We need to together Invest In Our Planet, I will continue to play my part with my photography and writing.

This is my first time marking #WorldWaterDay on my TGH Photography and Travel portal/blog. While I have been photographing, covering and writing on environmental protection, conservation, sustainability, I feel that I have not done enough. In recent years, I have increased concern for our world climate situation. I decided to be more active in this movement, I hope that my visual story telling can play a bigger role in helping to bring world environmental issues and awareness across to different groups of people not just in Singapore, around the world as well. 

World Water Day 2022 theme is Groundwater. It’s invisible yet its impact is visible everywhere around the world. We are over using groundwater in many areas around the world, our natural resource is being depleted and its time the world act on this. Back home in Singapore, we are having our own Singapore World Water Day too! Time to GoBlue4SG and let’s Make Every Drop Count. Canon Singapore has partnered with PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency on a photography contest – Canon x Singapore Water Day Photo Contest, Theme is “Water is Life” from 17th to 27th March 2022. When I am not doing commercial photography work, I love to explore Singapore’s nature and outdoors. From exploring parks, reservoirs, nature reserves, photographing wildlife, nature areas and how we Singaporeans interact and live with nature and outdoors close to our doorstep.

My recent exploration brought me to photographing nature, wildlife and our waterways/reservoirs up close as well as from a bird’s eye view in our heartlands.

In my short hands on experience article that I published in July 2020, I confessed that I wasn’t really into lenses with focal length range of 100-500mm as my setup was geared towards the holy trinity setup and big prime lenses. During the period when I was reviewing the Canon RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens, I was enlightened, my perceptions and views of this focal length range changed.  

A favourite lens for wildlife photographers 

I have been reading and looking at Facebook groups/pages posts on wildlife photographs shot in Singapore. There is a trend on these combinations of Canon EOS R5 or EOS R6 with RF100-500mm lens. I had chats with the folks from my local camera shop that I regularly go to, this is quite a popular camera and lens combination that the photographers wanted to get.

When I had the RF100-500mm lens with the Canon EOS R5 for review, I finally understood and realise why this is such a popular combination and setup. From my adventures at Jurong Bird Park, to West Coast Park, Bukit Batok Nature Park, Pasir Ris Park and Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. I photographed quite a lot of wildlife photographs.

The 100mm to 500mm range is versatile for wildlife photography, you would not be constrained by shorter focal lengths or a fixed focal length lens. The photographs quality are sharp even when shooting at its maximum aperture. 

This would not be the fastest lens since it’s not a constant aperture lens, nevertheless the AF is pretty impressive and fast when paired with the EOS R5 body (and I believe it would be just as good with the EOS R6 body too).

More than just a lens for wildlife and sports photography 

Although this lens is probably going to be more geared towards wildlife and sports photography, it’s a versatile lens that photographers can use for sports, travel and landscapes too. While I didn’t get the opportunity to photograph sports events with this lens, I was able to photograph people/machines in action from a distance away and landscapes too. 

Photographing landscapes with this 100mm to 500mm focal length range telephoto lens is probably less common, even less common in Singapore when it’s a small country by land size and honestly speaking, it doesn’t have much of a wide and vast landscapes in big countries that I visited. Using the RF100-500mm to shoot landscapes in Singapore, I managed to capture some beautiful moments that I really like and didn’t expect to come out in a way that I would expect from my travel photography trips overseas. 

Personal thoughts and views

This is a lens that change my view on long focal length range telephoto zoom lens. While I am a user and supporter of zoom lenses such as 24-70mm and 70-200mm focal range, a longer range focal length such as 70-300mm or 100-400mm didn’t attract me as much initially in my photography adventures. I was more inclined towards prime telephoto lens such as the 300mm f/2.8L for their speed and optics. During the period when I was reviewing the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens, it changed my view and approach towards wildlife, sports and action photography. I am now more inclined towards focal length range telephoto zoom lens, keen to get this lens some time down the road.

Key factors and points that convinced and changed me after using RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens

• Lighter in weight
• More versatile than a fixed focal length prime lens 
• Easier to carry and move around with faster reaction time when photographing wildlife/sports versus a fixed prime lens on a tripod 
• The optics quality and AF speed is excellent considering that it’s not a fixed focal length prime lens
• Price is a lot lower as compared to a fixed focal length prime lens 

A versatile, portable and not too heavy telephoto zoom lens with excellent optics quality that is comparable to a prime lens. Since it’s not a constant aperture lens, the auto-focus speed may not be as fast as a prime lens. However, when paired with the Canon EOS R5 or R6, the AF speed is still pretty fast and impressive. 

This remarkable lens is very Ideal for wildlife, sports and travel, sometimes landscapes too. In the wildlife and birding community, a number of photographers have the Canon EOS R5 or Canon EOS R6 and RF100-500mm setup, a powerful, ideal, excellent and popular combination of both AF speed, AF accuracy, optics and output quality (45MP Canon EOS R5 sensor provides lot of details even when cropping in). 

The retail recommended price for the Canon RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens is SGD$4,459, compared to a cost of a big aperture prime lens, it’s not that expensive.

The Canon RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens is a versatile, portable and not too heavy telephoto zoom lens, very ideal and suitable for wildlife photographers, sports and travel. This highly capable long range telephoto zoom lens gives photographers options to choose from for their wildlife or sports photography. A value for money top quality Canon L lens that gives photographers, versatility and portability versus the more expensive prime telephoto lens. Whether it is a telephoto zoom lens or telephoto prime lens, photographers have the options available to choose from.

The RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM is designed for professionals and advanced amateur photographers, for Canon photographers who are familiar with this popular EF lens, the EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM lens, this is the RF version equivalent, versatile and with a wide focal length range, ideal for photography genres such as sports, wildlife, nature photography and photojournalism as well.

“As the evolution of the popular EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens, the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM serves to strengthen the R and RF lineup by adding native super telephoto capabilities. Its increased range and compatibility with the Extender RF 1.4x, and Extender RF 2x, as well as the new cameras makes it extremely versatile and will surely excite photographers,” said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore.

Extra Reach in a Lightweight Package

The RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM is similar in size to the EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM lens, however, it’s 15% lighter in weight and has an additional 100mm reach. From the 100mm to 500mm focal length range, photographers can enjoy 5x zoom ratio, covering medium telephoto (100mm) to super telephoto range (500mm).

The lens’ large diameter RF mount allows for a short lens back focus, and the six UD lenses and one super UD lens within the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM are arranged near the focal plane surface. The ASC (Air Sphere Coating) on the lens elements is also used to reduce ghosting. All this work together to correct optical aberrations and deliver images that are sharp from edge to edge regardless of which focal length a user shoots at.

The RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM’s well-engineered dust and drip-resistant construction lets it perform at its best even in demanding situations. The lens’ heat-shield white paint suppresses heat from building up within the barrel of the lens, maintaining image quality even when shooting under the hot sun.

Sharper Images even at slower shutter speeds with In-Lens Image Stabiliser (IS)

The RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM has Canon’s unique Optical Image Stabiliser mechanism, giving photographers image stabilisation up to five shutter speed stops by revising the control algorithm of the optical IS and using Dual Sensing IS.

There are three IS modes on this lens, through the mode selection switch, photographers can toggle between these three modes, based on the movements of the subjects that they are shooting:

• IS mode 1 is best suited for stationary subjects
• IS mode 2 is used for panning shots
• IS mode 3 is suitable for subjects with irregular movements, such as during basketball where movements of players can be unpredictable

The latest Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 cameras, both camera bodies possess in-body 5-axis image stabilisation, when either camera is used with the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens, an IS effectiveness of six stops is achieved (based on CIPA testing standards) at 500mm focal length.

This is achieved through the coordinated controls between the camera’s and lens’ IS. Motion blur is reduced and users get sharper images even while shooting at 500mm focal length. Users can shoot at lower shutter speed in dim situations to achieve brighter shots, expanding the possibilities for handheld shooting.

Shoot Faster and Closer

The RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens is equipped with two Nano Ultrasonic Motors (USM) providing faster Auto Focus (AF), achieving high-speed, high-precision still image AF and smooth movie AF in combination with the EOS R series Dual Pixel CMOS AF. By using two Nano USMs to drive the lens, power saving and high-speed operation is achieved without compromising the size.

The RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM‘s unique electronic floating focus control has also made focusing at a mere 0.9m possible and the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM is capable of achieving 0.33x magnification on the 500mm focal length (focusing distance of 1.2m) allowing users to focus on close-up objects with ease. With such a short focusing distance and large magnification, users now have more room for creativity in their photography.

Extenders RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x

Canon also introduced two new dedicated Extenders, the Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x. Both of them are compatible with RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM, RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM, photographers can photograph at  1000mm on RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM and up to 1600mm on the  RF800mm f/11 IS STM without compromising on image quality.

The Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x both achieve high image quality and a smaller size with an optical design that utilises the large diameter mount and short back focus unique to the RF mounts. The total length of the new extenders (length from the mount on the body side to the mount on the lens side) has been reduced by 25% compared to the Extender EF 1.4xIII and Extender EF 2xIII. The extenders utilise the latest high-refractive-power, low-dispersion glass material to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations. The three cemented lens elements with special coating in the Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x help reduce the air contact surface as much as possible, effectively reducing ghosting that tends to occur with extenders.

Both extenders inherit the heat-shielding white paint from telephoto L lenses. Designed with built-in microprocessors, the extenders also allow for better communications between the lens and camera to achieve the same high precision AF as though the user is shooting without an extender.

The vibration and impact resistant structure along with the dust and drip-resistant construction of both extenders are designed to be reliable and durable for professional and advanced amateur users.

Pricing and Availability

The pricing and availability of the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM, will be confirmed at a later date. Both the Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x will be available from 30 July 2020, for $829 and $1,000, respectively.
