Anime X Stamps at Singapore Philatelic Museum

Anime and stamps, are they meant to be together? Have you seen them together before? Yes, they have and they can be together! At the Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM), there is a very special theme exhibition, celebrating the centenary of Japanese anime in a pop-culture themed exhibition titled “Anime X Stamps”.

If you are an Anime fan, you have to visit this exhibition! Anime X Stamps exhibition is now running at SPM from 16th November 2017 to April 2018! This exhibition is more than just special, it’s colourful, immersive, comprehensive and nostalgic (for anime fans!). Being a special pop-culture themed exhibition, there are a pretty big collection of stamps and philatelic materials from Japan and Singapore, limited edition collectibles, and one-of-a-kind orginal production artworks specially put together for this special anime theme exhibition!

“This year marks the 100th anniversary of Japanese anime. Anime has developed over the pastcentury to encompass a diverse repertoire of stories and characters, enjoyed around the world by people of all ages. Anime X Stamps explores how Japan showcases anime, their creativity and innovative way of doing things through stamps! This attests to the fact that stamps are the pride of a country.”

Ms Tresnawati Prihadi, General Manager of SPM

Let me share with you readers, some of the highlights of the exhibition:

  • A collection of over 700 stamps that depict anime, which cover about 80 different titles. Get up-close to stamps of beloved classics like Astro Boy and Doraemon, all-time favourites like Dragon Ball, Gundam, Pokémon, works by Studio Ghibili, as well as more recent series like One Piece, Naruto and Attack on Titan.
  • Rare one-of-a-kind original production artwork from Naruto and My Neighbour Totoro.
  • Limited edition collectibles, toys, costumes and figurines from the Dragon Ball and Mazinger Z series, and Astro Boy collectibles from the 1960s.
  • Photo opportunities in colourful immersive galleries featuring Fifi, the exhibition mascot, who cosplays iconic scenes from different anime.

When I visited the Anime X Stamps exhibition at SPM, I was secretly excited inside me (cannot show too much excitement if not I would reveal my age) because I went back to the good old days when I was watching Japanese anime! I had a chat with the curator, who is a huge anime fan herself, on some Japanese anime series, whether they produced stamps such as those featured inside this Anime X Stamps exhibition. While this exhibition is pretty comprehensive, the Japanese anime world is so huge that not all of them produce stamps and philatelic materials. I was looking for some of my favourite Japanese anime series such as Samurai X, Initial D, Slam Dunk. How I wished these Japanese anime series produced stamps and philatelic materials for their fans around the world!

Touring the exhibition and observing the Anime X stamps, I spotted Ranma ½ stamps, that was brought to our attention by the curator (I am probably the only one in that group on that media preview tour that watched Ranma ½ and I would proabably give my age away as well). I also spotted Doraemon and friends (who doesn’t know them!), City Hunter, Astro Boy, Naruto, Dragon Ball Z etc etc … So many nostalgic memories coming back to me!

There are many more exciting and fun activities inside the Anime X stamps exhibition at SPM. Keep a lookout for the upcoming Animania Sunday on 17th December 2017, anime fans, mark it down on your calendar! More information and updates can be found on the SPM website and SPM Facebook page.

Here’s a peak (through my photos) into what you can view inside this special and interesting Anime X stamps exhibition! If you love Japanese anime, you (MUST) have to visit! Bring your children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren down to SPM, it’s educational and great fun for them during this festive school holiday season! For those adults who love Japanese anime and bringing their kids down to Anime X stamps exhibition, it’s like a mini pilgrimage returning into the world of Japanese anime (and you know you want it, deep inside your heart).
