World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) 2026 falls on 9th May and 10th October. Over the years starting from 2021, I have been supporting World Migratory Bird Day as I got more active in bird photography (local and migratory) in Singapore.

Looking back at my previous years coverage on World Migratory Bird Day – WMBD 2021, WMBD 2023 (May 13th), WMBD 2023 (October 14th), WMBD 2024 (11th May), WMBD 2024 (12th October), WMBD 2025 (10th May) and WMBD 2026 (11th October), my birding journey has seen some great adventures visiting various nature reserves, parks and coastal areas for my birding photography, curating and uploading them into my Flickr photography collection – Bird/Wildlife Photography in Singapore.

Theme for 2026 – “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter!”

The theme for World Migratory Bird Day 2026 is “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter!”

Every citizen involved in wildlife, nature, bird, conservation, wildlife/bird photography, can play a part, an important role of community science a.k.a. citizen science for the conservation of migratory birds.

Playing my small part in World Migratory Bird Day 2026 | Role and Power of Community Science

Through my humble bird photography collections taken at different locations in Singapore, documenting the various bird species that visited Singapore or are residents of Singapore, I am playing my small part in World Migratory Bird Day 2026.

Photographing birds at various parks/coastlines/nature reserves in Singapore are just like going to my own backyard in Singapore, our bird photographs and observations can become part of community science, even small roles yet showcasing the power of community science, from tracking migratory birds patterns, population trends and changes in habitats across our migratory bird flyways.

Kickstarting my migratory bird photography season (October to April) with World Migratory Bird Day 2026

I have been leveraging on World Migratory Bird Day on the 10th October to kickstart my migratory bird photography season in Singapore. Although I started a little bit earlier in September 2026 when I saw other bird photographers posting some migratory birds early arrival e.g. Common Kingfisher.

During the weekend of 11th October 2026, I visited Singapore Botanic Gardens to kickstart my migratory bird photography season, keeping my fingers crossed. This visit finally paid off dividends for me, I managed to photograph the fairy pitta (vagrant) at Learning Forest and Amur Paradise Flycatcher at Healing Forest!

Yes, my migratory bird photography season from October 2026 to April 2027 has officially kicked off! Looking at my bird/wildlife photography in Singapore collections on Flickr, I am setting my goals for migratory bird photography 2026:

  • Migratory birds that I have yet to photograph
  • Revisiting some locations in Singapore that I haven’t visited for some time

Wishing fellow bird/wildlife photographers a fruitful World Migratory Bird Day 2026 (10th October), let’s continue to play our role, keep photographing, documenting and sharing about birds (both local and migratory)!
