DBS Marina Regatta 2014, Singapore’s Biggest Water Sports Festival was held recently at the Marina Bay area on 17th and 18th May. This wasn’t just a water sports festival with competitive Dragon Boating paddling actions; there were lots of fun and activities on the land too! Dragon Boating action was on both days, 17th and 18th May, with the 200m races on Saturday 17th and 500m races on 18th May. The weather was good on Saturday 17th and there were pretty good competitive Dragon Boating action on the water for all spectators around the Marina Bay area. The action was fast and intense, with many supporters cheering on their teammates from the sidelines of the Promontory at Marina Bay.
However, the weather on Sunday, 18th May, was bad, with heavy thunderstorm and downpour. In lieu of the safety for the Dragon Boat paddlers and events ground staff, the Dragon Boat races were not able to go ahead and many have to be cancelled due to safety considerations from the bad weather conditions and lightning risks. While there will be disappointments from the competitors/participants, they will understand that safety for all competitors/participants were the utmost priority and cannot be compromised. The weather on Sunday cleared up around the late afternoon and there were 5 races that could go ahead in the early evening. The last 5 Dragon Boat races gave the grand finale to the finishing line of DBS Marina Regatta 2014!
There were an array of fun and festivities on the land, around the DBS Marina Regatta events/carnival village, for the participants and visitors to enjoy and have fun in! There was something for everybody there, from the young to the adults! There were the Asia Cosplay Meet, Asian Food Festival, Asian Drum Challenge, DBS Movies By The Bay, Play Zone, DBS Cycle By The Bay, and Photo Booth and Merchandise booth to buy gifts! Selfies for good was launched for DBS Marina Regatta 2014, a movement to celebrate the enthusiasm of the participants and visitors to DBS Marina Regatta who took many photographs (and selfies) and sharing it on social media platforms such as Instagram. For every selfie taken at DBS Marina Regatta 2014, a free meal will be pledged to a primary school student supported by the Student Advisory Centre. This was a great and noble initiative!
With the conclusion of the final 2 Dragon Boat races in the evening and as the sun sets down on a Sunday evening, DBS Marina Regatta 2014 came to a close with an electronic kites display and a fireworks display at Marina Bay. Till we meet again next year for DBS Marina Regatta 2015!
