DBS Marina Regatta 2016

The DBS Marina Regatta 2016 took place over two weekends recently, on the 28th & 29th May and 4th & 5th June 2016. A water sports competition along with land based activities for supporters and visitors, it was a carnival for everybody to come down and enjoy the dragon boating action, fun leisure activities, food, festivities, music and the one and only pop-up urban beach.

On the Marina Bay waters, teams battle out on their dragon boats from the morning till the evening, a showcase of teamwork, determination, speed, power and adrenaline. They dragon boat paddlers were great to watch, some of the competitions faced some pretty close fight all the way to the finishing line, perfect for a finishing line photo opportunity.

The first weekend was the 200m race distance while the second weekend was the 500m race distance. Two different race distances, teams applied different tactics to compete in their respective race distances. The 500m race distance were more interesting to watch especially when the paddlers rev up their tempo, speed, pace and power around the last 200m mark to the finishing line, giving spectators lots to watch and cheer about from the sides of The Promontory at Marina Bay.

On the shore of The Promontory at Marina Bay, where the DBS Marina Regatta carnival village was located, packed with many fun leisure activities for everybody to come down and enjoy. There was the pop-up urban beach, 3,100sqm with a 375sqm pool. Visitors were able to enjoy stand-up paddling, stand-up yoga at the pop-up pool. There were also deck chairs, hammocks, palm trees, pop-up beach bar, concert stage and atmospheric night lighting.

At DBS Marina Regatta 2016, there was an appearance by Southeast Asia tallest inflatable slide, at a height of 16m with the total slide height of over 15m. Participants slide down at angle of 45 degrees and this was popular with the visitors to DBS Marina Regatta 2016. The fee was SGD $10 for five rides and all the proceeds were donated to SPD, a non-profit organisation that helps people with disabilities develop their potential to the fullest so that they can be self-reliant and independent.

DBS Marina Regatta 2016 also saw the largest collective of home-grown designers, musicians and chefs gathering at Marina Bay. Curated by The Local People, market specialists and space activators, the regatta’s art market Shop House featured some of the most up-and-coming names in the industry, to be part of the festivities and fun at DBS Marina Regatta 2016. Food is a very important part of our life here in Singapore and there were various mouth watering food options at the food village Chow House.

A good mix of water sports action and community activities at DBS Marina Regatta 2016, their 5th year in action. It had grown over the years and looking forward to their 6th year and beyond.
