Agility that astounds

The Nikon Z 8 weighs approximately 910g (1), allowing for agile shooting for an extended period of time, even if you are a one-person operation with its compact and lightweight video recording system. The Z 8’s compatibility with an array of videographer accessories, including the MC-N10 Remote Grip and wireless video transmitters, and v-mount batteries, significantly reducing the amount of equipment needed during shoots and set-up time.

The High-Res Zoom allows one to zoom up to the angle of view equivalent to 2x of the focal length, even with a prime lens attached, during 4K UHD (30p/25p/24p) and Full HD video recording in full-frame.

The Z 8 is designed and engineered with videographers in mind, they can record up to approximately 125min in 4K UHD/60p (2) and up to approximately 90min in 8K UHD/30p (3).

Thanks to the camera’s 4-axis vertical/horizontal tilting monitor that also includes vertical display orientation, you can now enjoy nimble and comfortable shooting angles with smooth and flexible operation. Display of the i menu is also shown in the respective orientation when tilting the monitor vertically or horizontally during shooting mode. 

Professional video choice

You can now choose from a wide variety of video formats as the extension of your narratives. From 12-bit N-RAW and ProRes RAW, to 10-bit Apple ProRes 422 HQ and 8 bit-H265 SDR in-camera recording, the versatility is endless whether for a creator just starting out or for a full-fledged professional.

Create videos in high-definition 4K UHD/60p2, 50p (2), and 30p oversampled from 8K, providing the opportunity to shoot in high-definition video that can be enjoyed on a large screen. For those requiring higher frame rates, the 4K 120p is also available for greater filmmaking flexibility. Alternatively, amp it up with 8.3K/60P (in N-RAW only) or 8K UHD/30P. Accompanied by N-Log for colour grading, users can tell impressive stories in motion.

Capture busy city scenes or epic movements of wildlife with time-lapse videos in 8K HDR in-camera that are also compatible for viewing on Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG)-compatible 8K monitors via a HDMI 2.1 connection. 

Seeing is Capturing

With the Z 8 Pre-Release Capture (3) function, decisive moments are easily caught on camera. When you are using the High-Speed Frame Capture+, users can record up to 1 second before the shutter button is fully pressed, or up to 4 seconds after the button is fully pressed.

Imagine this scene of a big and crowded wedding, focussing before capturing a crowd of faces can be a challenge, especially when the bride and groom are among the group, or while tracking the couple amongst the well-wishes of family and friends. The camera’s autofocusing automatically detects 3% (4) of the human face size in the frame.

Subject detection also works in 3D-tracking, auto-area autofocus (AF), or 20 types of custom wide-area AF (12 types in video). Capture night scenes with clarity with the excellent AF detection range down to -7 EV (-9 to 19 EV in starlight view mode) [5] – allowing enhanced detection of subjects under darker conditions. 

Photographers would love this function when they can lock focus quickly and reliably as the AF identifies and tracks up to nine different kinds of subjects. Users who love capturing aviation photography will appreciate the addition of the new Airplane mode to the AF subject detection menu. Focus easily on the intended aircraft regardless of the magnification (size) as this mode provides a more stable detection, including in low-light situations or with a cluttered background. 

The new support for HLG (HEIF) [6] format also provides an option for 10-bit still images with richer tonal gradation. 

Post-editing made simple

Skin softening feature take your portraiture to another level. They auto-detects human faces and softens the skin, while keeping eyes and hair sharp. Users can apply this effect for videos, live streaming, and stills.

Portrait impression balance effect minimise your editing time that enhances portraits in-camera by adjusting the hue and brightness. The adjustment is also available via direct settings and the i menu while confirming the subjects through live view image, in addition to via the photo or video shooting menu. 

Achieve more beautiful depictions with an intuitive user interface in adjusting colour temperatures, and an enhanced auto white balance (AWB) performance that helps to reduce colour cast. 

Capture with confidence

Adding on to the robustness of this camera is Sereebo P series, a new environmental-friendly material used on the main body components, which can endure knocks and withstand temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, the dust-and-drip resistant (7) design helps to prevent dust and liquid from entering the camera. 

Carry the Z 8 with confidence as it features a VR lock to prevent accidental damage to the image sensor when the power is turned off. Minimise the risk of dust adhering to the image sensor with dual coating used for the optical filter and image sensor, as well as a sensor shield that comes in handy when one is attaching and detaching the lens. 

Never miss out on another decisive moment with the Real-Live Viewfinder that displays subject motion in real time with no blackout (8). When capturing shots of golf swings and tennis serves, enjoy capturing a vast number of shots without worrying about shutter wear and rolling shutter distortion, thanks to the absence of a mechanical shutter. 

Obtain stable shots with a powerful Vibration Reduction (VR) that achieves an effect equivalent to a shutter speed of 6.0 stops (9) with the in-camera VR and Synchro VR. Electronic VR is also available in video recording. 

Revel in your creativity without worrying about running out of power as the MB-N12 Power Battery Pack adds approximately 1.8x more shots and recording time, while providing the same dust-and drip-resistant performance as the Z 8. Sold separately, it is equipped for cold weather operations, even at -10 degrees Celsius and allows for USB charging and power delivery. 

The Nikon Z 8 is also the first Z series model to provide two USB terminals – one for power charging/delivery and the other for data communication – enabling power delivery during communication without experiencing sudden disconnections and hence a more reliable connection on both ends.

Nikon Z8 Short Hands-On Experience 

I had the opportunity to have a short hands on experience with the Nikon Z8 during their recent media launch event in Singapore with a Nikon Z8 to take photos and try out various Nikon lenses at the Z8 launch event. While it’s been quite a while since I last get to have a hands on with a Nikon camera, therefore I have to get myself familiarise again with the controls and buttons of a Nikon camera. 

As it was a short hands on experience with the Z8, I managed to photograph some different shots. Photographers (regardless of camera brands that you are using) would know about Nikon’s imaging quality, it can be seen through the works produced with the Z8 camera.  

My personal overall feel for me is the Z8 is an impressive camera that would cater for both stills photography and videography, that would suit those into content creation sectors. This camera is good enough to carve out a niche for itself within the list of camera brands operating in this segment.  

Nikon looks to be getting more into the videography segment with Z8. I didn’t manage to shoot any videos during the short hands on experience. This segment would be of great interest to many out there, see how they can develop and expand in this segment.

If I do get the opportunity to review the Nikon Z8, I would share more user experiences with this new Nikon camera.

TikTok

My entry into TikTok is a story on procrastination because I don’t really know how to leverage or differentiate TikTok platform and how this would fit into my social media/content creation setup. More insights can be read here on my TGH Technology and Business portal/blog article, where I wrote from a social media and digital marketing perspective.

TikTok would give me a new dimension in my visual storytelling through vertical videos format, together with YouTube. TikTok is unique in its own sense, style, character and following. They are more of an entertainment platform than a social media platform, even though they are a form of social media. Therefore, hopping onto TikTok would require a new and different set of social media strategies and direction.

A new content creator + visual storytelling approach and journey 

There are always be some points in our ongoing photography and creative journey that we have to refresh and rebuild (at some junctures too) the tools of our trade, that would allow us to adapt and meet the demands of a new era of living, digital world, social media and media consumption.

From a purist photographer, diversifying out into a content creator + digital agency/studio setup (TGH Digital Studio), complementing my TGH Photography business. All these didn’t happen overnight, they took a few years, the change wasn’t easy, it’s still ongoing amidst an ever-changing media consumption, digital transformation, social media and technological (cue Generative AI) landscapes.

While photography and visual storytelling remains my core and strengths, the diversification and addition of video, vlogging and TikTok would enhance and reinforce how I want to tell my stories in both photos and videos. 

Therefore, a new camera for the new future, for the hybrid content creator and visual storyteller has come into play, a favourite iconic camera that I used to associate/brand myself will have to leave. That story would be for another time, another place, in time to come, that fellow photographers would be to relate and resonate. 

A candle light lighting up another, passing the fire and spark to start a new content creation and visual storytelling journey ahead. 

The time is now, a new era has dawned.

This news came as a shell shock for many of us in the photography world, shaking our heads in disbelief, especially those photographers/creatives like myself who were part of the web 2.0/blogging era before the rise of social media platforms and apps.

I established my TGH Photography and Travel portal/blog in April 2006. At the juncture in time, I was new and raw to the writing/blogging world (those were the days before the social media era). Although I am passionate and interested in photography (I am still is), my initial writing style was raw and unpolished. Not many photography websites were around for us to look upon where we can learn. DPReview was one of the photography websites that set the tone, direction and style that I based myself when I started writing my camera and lenses reviews.

While DPReview can be overly technical at times, I can understand the editorial direction that they undertake, and relate to the photography technicalities since I am a photographer myself. My style of doing camera and lenses review changed over the the decade, my foundations and basis of doing and writing my camera and lenses review kickstarted from reading DPReview’s camera and lenses review articles.  

The difficult business climate, huge accelerated changes in media landscape over the years, how we consumed and utilised social media, those factors could derail a business, and probably the impacts would be bigger on us in the photography and creatives industry.   

I would like to say Thank You to DPReview for the things that you did for the world photography industry and community over the past 25 years. This is going to be huge loss for the world photography industry and community. Although this is going to mark the end of DPReview, the end of an era, we photographers/creatives will not forget DPReview.

Besides normal 8-bit recording, the EOS R8 offers 2 options for recording 10-bit 4:2:2 HDR video. The EOS iTR AF X system not only detects and tracks people, animals, and vehicles by deep learning, it also identifies other subjects and “locks” onto them using characteristics like shape, colour, and brightness. Weighing approximately 210g and measuring 5.8cm when retracted, the RF24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM complements the compact EOS R8, to form a 671g combination that is lighter than the EOS R5 body alone! It covers a wide-angle to standard view on a full-frame camera, offering compositional flexibility that sets it apart from similarly sized prime lenses. 

Equipped with 4.5 stops’ Optical IS, the lens will empower users to explore new angles. It also supports enhanced stabilisation through Coordinated Control IS with cameras that feature Movie Digital IS (3) and In-Body IS: for the latter, up to 7 stops’ IS is possible.

RF-S55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM: An Ultra Portable Telephoto Zoom Lens for APS-C EOS R camera bodies

APS-C EOS R camera users who want a compact, lightweight telephoto lens to match their camera bodies now have the RF-S55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM, which weighs approximately 270g.  The new lens provides a full-frame equivalent angle of view of approximately 88 to 336mm, with semi macro capabilities (up to 0.28x magnification) and close-up shooting (closest focusing distance of 0.73m) at the tele end. The use of two UD lenses and two optically placed aspherical lenses correct chromatic aberrations, delivering high-resolution and sharpness with excellent colour throughout the entire zoom range.

Initial Thoughts and Views from short hands on media session

EOS R8

During the media preview session, I had a short hands on session with the Canon EOS R8. The form and built factor is very familiar for me as I am using a Canon EOS RP. The Canon EOS R8 is an entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera, it has inherited many wonderful features for both stills and video from the Canon EOS R6 Mark II. 

The lightest full-frame Canon camera, packed with powerful features and capabilities, the Canon EOS R8 would make an ideal first full-frame mirrorless camera for users to elevate your content creation, video production as well as your full-frame photography.

With the announcement of the Canon EOS R8, consumers now have more full-frame camera options for them to choose from, that would suit their budget and requirements. Consumers would now have additional options for a hybrid camera for their content creation, photography and videography with the Canon EOS R8.

RF24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM

A very compact and lightweight RF lens. This focal length would be ideal for travel, street and daily use, if they don’t require to shoot subjects further away with a longer focal length.

RF-S55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM 

A compact and lightweight telephoto lens for APS-C EOS R camera users, ideal for travel and shooting subjects much further away.

The above points are just my initial thoughts and views from my short hands on media session with the Canon EOS R8 and new RF lenses. I hope to go deeper into this Canon EOS R8 full-frame mirrorless camera some time down the road when I get the opportunity to test it out for review and I would be able to share more of my in-depth experiences, thoughts and views of the Canon EOS R8.

Yearly Theme 2023 (Photography and Travel) – “Explore”

Now let me introduce and announce my Yearly Theme 2023 for photography and travel – “Explore”.

Why “Explore”? 

The word “Explore” has always been part of my life, from my Scouting days in school, to my traveler explorer days, in both my professional/business and personal life. My photography themes/projects have always been on exploration, in both nature, wildlife, history, heritage and cultural areas. 

Photography 

In year 2023, I am going to explore new collaborations in both professional and personal capacities. 

On the photography business sector, there would be changes and approaches to my portfolio of services or specialisation.

On my personal photography segment, there are a lot more plans, ideas, collaborations and new collaborations that I more than want to explore, the personal side of photography keeps my passion and fire burning in a commercial photography, content creation world.

If there is something deep inside me that I want to do, they would be along the lines of 

• Back to basics, back to analogue 
• Honing my craft and eye for creativity 
• Collaborating with like-minded creatives for new projects  

Some sectors that I would like to explore further are photography training/educator and consultancy. I made some progress and headways in the two sectors, I am going to continue building up from there. 

Travel

I made a decision not to travel out during 2022 when borders reopened along with the lifting of risk management measures, even though my travel wanderlust was strong. In 2023, I am planning to re-explore my travel photography and travel writing again, after a 3 years hiatus due to the global pandemic situation.

I hope to explore new travel destinations (ASEAN, Japan, Europe) that I haven’t previously visited. Of course, I would still love to revisit some of my favourite travel destinations. I am also planning to explore the area on Sustainability further and wider in travel, tourism, hospitality industries, around the region before venturing further out.

Writing and Publishing Books and Zines

One of my new philosophy in photography, writing and creativity is “Bringing my projects to life”, into prints, zines or books. In a heavy social media usage and consumption world where everything is digital, maybe a return to analogue or old school, can spark us a revival in how we work and live.

Therefore, I am going to explore new personal visual storytelling projects, beyond my current ones. I want to explore further, wider and deeper as a content creator and visual storyteller.

Should I go for a photo book or a new travel visual storytelling project or new zine collection project? Or all of the above? Exploring new publishing projects for year 2023, I would share more in details when the time is ripe.

Complementing my photography training and consultancy, I am going to explore publishing photography guides for the modern creative and social media world.

New set of Uncertainties and Dark Clouds in 2023

In a period of uncertainties and crisis (hopefully it doesn’t reach that stage), there might be new opportunities. Time to explore other opportunities as a new set of dark clouds (challenges and uncertainties) looms over 2023. We are facing inflation, higher costs of living, economic slowdown (or even possibly world recession) and geo-political worldwide crisis in a worst worst case scenario. 

In a period of uncertainties and political crisis in some regions (hopefully it doesn’t escalate beyond that stage into bigger crisis), there might be new opportunities. Time to explore other opportunities as a new set of dark clouds (challenges and uncertainties) looms over 2023.

Commercial photography 

The camera and photography industry has seen so many changes over the decades, it’s constantly evolving and changing in terms of technological changes and advancements. The commercial/professional photography has been affected in more ways than just technological advancements itself. 

Having entered into the photography business world, it’s beyond just taking photographs, editing and delivering the works to your clients. This is just a small segment of running a small business, that would mean administrative, marketing, finances etc. 

Although I was mentally prepared to start my own business, getting onto the ground, going full hands-on on running my own business. There were so many many more things to learn, do, maintaining and bringing in revenue. Being prepared is just the tip of the iceberg, we would never be fully prepared or know everything in knowing how to run a business efficiently and effectively. 

You will experience lots of obstacles, challenges, on top of hardships, difficulties, stress and pressure. Factor in a shrinking commercial photography market just added so much more things to worry and handle.

I have known photographer friends setting up businesses in other industries, diversifying and ensuring another source of revenue. They are true business owners indeed.

Influx of photographers (from newbies, freelancers to professionals)

The technology, digital and social media transformation and revolution in some ways, they are both good and bad for photography, on both leisure and professional aspects. The rise of digital photography, coupled with smartphone photography, opened up photography to many more people, making it easier, lowering the barriers to entry and starting photography. 

That is why, we have an influx of photographers (from newbies, freelancers to professionals), thus impacting the livelihoods of professionals with more freelancers entering the market. 

Changing media landscape and consumption 

While there are more people taking photos with their cameras and smartphones, producing and sharing a lot more photographs on social media and the internet. The media landscape has changed tremendously, with how we consume videos from the rise of videography, made easier though the rise of smartphones and digital cameras. 

Although our life is flooded with people sharing photos, we are facing a changing media landscape and consumption of media, there has already been a greater shift towards videos, whether it is Instagram Reels, or TikTok, or YouTube videos, live broadcast on social media platforms.

Rise of the content creator 

The social media revolution brought about the rise of the content creator aided by the various social media platforms available. In the early days when social media revolution first started, it was blogging that was the mainstay (and that’s where I first started off on my social media and content creator journeys).

Social media has helped to build up my photography networks, publicity and branding that I slowly built over the past decade. However, they are not perfect, it has its own flaws, challenges, quirks and areas where we photographers dislike it. 

This content creator role arises when I merged and integrated more of my visual story telling together with my photography, this journey took me quite a while, learning, growing and developing my own unique voice and style as a content creator through my visual stories and photographs (since April 2006).

Future of photography

What does the future of photography holds? Whether you are a leisure photographer, serious enthusiast or professional, it would mean different things to you.

For the group who are serious enthusiasts or professionals, the future of photography is challenging and intriguing, we can no longer be just a photographer, we are more than just a photographer.

Photographers (now and in the immediate future), we have to be multi-functional, multi-tasking and multi-talented. We are more than just a photographer, we are also a videographer, content creator, writer, producer. Sometimes you have to wear the hat of a designer, artist too.

Key lessons that I learnt through running a photography business over the past few years, and especially during the global pandemic period when the whole world “turned upside down”, are 

“Change, unlearn, learn again (new and old skills), adapt, adopt, reinvent, re-imagine yourself and re-launch yourself”

Instagram ruined photography

Instagram is not longer the same as before the time when they first started. You would have heard this from me repeatedly over the past few years, I sound like a broken recorder playing on repeat. Tony & Chelsea Northrup produced a video titled, “Instagram ruined photography”. Check out their video below:

Instagram in the early years were great for photographers and creatives, it was fun, good vibes and you can get to know more like minded photography friends. To give credit when it’s due, I did get to know more photography friends, spread my photography name and networks in the early days of Instagram.

As time went by, more people came on board Instagram platform, they slowly started changing and moving away from photographers and creatives. When it was bought over by Facebook, the ballgame totally changed, turning into a marketing, branding and publicity platform. 

Besides all those changes, the Instagram environment had become more toxic, it’s all about fame and follower numbers. The egos and cliques made it unbearable at times. There were times whereby I did harbour thoughts of leaving Instagram, I didn’t exit, I just continued in a carefree and leisure manner, by my own terms and standards.

What lies ahead for my photography?

There had been a number of occasions over the past few years since I registered my photography business whereby I reflected on how I was running my photography business, leisure/personal photography and content creation work. From pivoting and changing to what I shoot, diversifying and expanding my creative suite of services. 

A recent deep personal reflection and thinking at the start of June 2022 got me strategising changes ahead. What lies ahead for my photography? 

I am working and planning on expanding my content creator scope bigger and wider, to be less dependent on commercial photography, partly due to the current economic and market situation, as well as how the future of standalone photography might turn out to be.

What would the changes be like? What lies ahead for my photography? Would there be big changes or small changes? Let’s see how things turn out.
