Canon, today on 9th July 2019, announced two new compact digital cameras to their lineup, the Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II and PowerShot G7 X Mark III. They are the latest additions to the Canon PowerShot G series family of compact digital cameras. High end compact digital cameras still have a role to play in the market, even in the midst of the ongoing debate on digital cameras (DSLR, mirrorless, compact) and smartphone cameras.

The Canon PowerShot G series family compact cameras are suitable for those who wish to have more functions and capabilities from their compact digital cameras as compared to their smartphones yet they don’t wish to go into mirrorless or DSLRs.

Let me share more information and details on the Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II and Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III

Canon today introduced two new additions to its G series family – the PowerShot G5 X Mark II and PowerShot G7 X Mark III, successors to the G5 X and G7 X Mark II respectively. The latest in Canon’s flagship compact models continue with the series’ heritage, featuring a stellar combination of DSLR speed, quality and lightweight handling. The PowerShot G5 X Mark II and PowerShot G7 X Mark III boast a 20.1MP, 1-inch stacked CMOS sensor, a wide aperture of f/1.8- f/2.8 with a good optical zoom of 5x (PowerShot G5 X Mark II) and 4.2x (PowerShot G7 X Mark III) and Canon’s pioneering DIGIC 8 processor in their compact bodies to offer DSLR-like creative expression in both stills and un-cropped 4K videos.

“Canon’s G series has been a legendary mainstay of our premium point-and-shoot cameras. The latest models take the G series into a new era while carrying on the rich tradition,” said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore. “The PowerShot G5 X Mark II and PowerShot G7 X Mark III incorporate a blend of innovations from the 1-inch stacked CMOS sensor, to high functionality and quality into compact bodies for greater ease of use and enjoyment. They are delightful companions engineered to help you capture memories on all occasions, big or small.”

Fast, Confident Shooting

One major challenge of shooting fast-moving subjects is capturing that one perfect frame when the subject is in focus and in the desired position. Now, you can shoot boldly with the PowerShot G5 X Mark II and PowerShot G7 X Mark III. Its pre-shoot setting will start shooting at 0.5 seconds before you even press the shutter release button. Hence, the moment will still be captured even if you press the shutter button a split second later. Photographs can be taken at a high speed of 30 shots per second in RAW burst mode (and 20fps in jpeg), making sure you miss nothing, especially if you are capturing jump shots or your child blowing out candles on a birthday cake.

Beyond that, by enabling the enhanced focus bracketing on both cameras, you can take images with focus precision. This feature is especially useful when you need to take macro shots as the depth of field is usually very shallow at very close focus distances. Focus bracketing helps to keep foreground subject in focus for landscape shots.

Both cameras include a panoramic mode, activated by a simple push of a button. With horizontal or vertical panning, you can easily capture panoramic shots with amazing details in high quality.

Create Movies in Stunning Definition

Both PowerShot G5 X Mark II and PowerShot G7 X Mark III lets users capture 4K movies without crop, allowing you to take full advantage of your lenses to shoot landscape videos.

With 4K movies recorded in motion JPEG, frame grabs are possible, allowing users to review footage and at any given point, extract a moment from the video and save it as a high-quality 8MP JPEG on the camera.

The PowerShot G7 X Mark III will be equipped with a live streaming function, which supports video streaming from the camera to YouTube. An especially useful feature for vloggers, as long as you are connected to Wi-Fi, you can use your camera just like your smartphone to livestream events. With a tilting LCD on both cameras, you can shoot from different angles, from the ground up, or from high angles to create videos with a unique point of view.

Pair either one with Canon’s Tripod Grip HG-100TBR, a video grip that provides a sturdy and comfortable hold of the camera for more creative video recording possibilities while even supporting vertical shooting. The HG-100TBR comes with a bluetooth wireless remote controller (BR-E1) that not only serves as a shutter release but supports zoom operations as well. Transform the HG-100TBR into a table-top tripod when you need hands-free self-recording.

Intuitive Features and Ergonomic Handling

With their highly pocket-friendly dimensions and ergonomic design, both the PowerShot G5 X Mark II and PowerShot G7 X Mark III can easily fit into a slip-pocket in your bag, which makes them ideal choice for lifestyle users looking for an all-in-one camera for everyday use.

At 304 grams, the PowerShot G7 X Mark III is 36 grams lighter than the PowerShot G5 X Mark II, making it a compact powerhouse. The PowerShot G7 X Mark III comes in two colours- black and silver. Users familiar with Canon’s EOS cameras would appreciate both cameras’ operation and intuitive control features, which has been upgraded from the existing compact digital camera’s user interface.

The PowerShot G5 X Mark II, like its predecessor, features a 2.36 million-dot electronic viewfinder that offers high resolution. It is a pop-up EVF that could be stowed away to avoid adding bulk to its form, a first in the G series. Users can customise the display format of the EVF on both cameras to their shooting preference.

Versatile Charging and Advanced Connectivity

Both the PowerShot G5 X Mark II and PowerShot G7 X Mark III are capable of USB charging which makes it more convenient for users on the go.

The PowerShot G5 X Mark II and PowerShot G7 X Mark III are packed with connectivity features, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), to effortlessly connect with compatible smart devices with one single tap and switch seamlessly between Wi-Fi and BLE. Users can use the Canon Camera Connect app to perform network-related features. When paired, you can have the option of sending images from the camera to your smartphone while simultaneously shooting. This makes photo management easy, so users can skip the manual transfer of images after shooting.

When connected, users can also do Remote Live View Shooting, which means you can use your smartphone to control the camera to shoot, avoiding camera shakes
