MHC Hari Raya Open House AidilFEASTri Festival 2024 Theme: Food

The theme for MHC Hari Raya Open House 2024 is food. This year’s programmes will serve up a buffet of programmes, activities and displays showcasing the culinary traditions and intangible cultural heritage practices related to Hari Raya. The AidilFEASTri Festival 2024 programme highlights include a cooking demonstration with MasterChef Singapore finalist Chef IIya Fadhly, Teh Tarik making workshop by Tarik.SG, and a larger-than-life food replicas of iconic Hari Raya dishes such as mutton biryani, sayer lodeh, and assorted kueh. 

There are also other exciting programmes at this special edition MHC Hari Raya Open House which will explore the influences and commonalities between Malay and Indian culture, such as 

• Taste of Heritage: Nasi Tomato, Ayam Bakar and Begedil & Soto Pani Puri with Chef Ilya
• Threads of Unity: Unravelling Shared Textile Traditions Between India and the Nusantara,

On top of all this, there will also be upbeat dance and musical performances, such as the medley of nostalgic Raya songs performed with traditional instruments, spreading the festive cheer of Hari Raya.

Same Same But Different: A Theatrical Experience for Families 

(Presented by Malay Heritage Centre, supported by The Solitude Movement)

A theatre experience conducted in English, ideal and suitable for parents with children aged 5 to 10 years old. 

Same Same But Different is a story about uncovering one’s uniqueness and the beautiful power of friendship. Participants would be brought through a journey of self-discovery, Siti and Yong find out what makes them special. In the process, both of them learnt more about each other, cherishing their friendship with each other even more.

During this interactive and fun storytelling session, participants will get to have hands on at various activities such as creating their own hand mirror, henna art and other activities. Each parent-child pair will also get to visit two Heritage Institutions within the same day, with a one-way bus ride taking them from SYSNMH to IHC. 

On the bus ride from SYSNMH to IHC, there would be an interesting storytelling segment taking place on the bus! Therefore, participants are highly recommended to take public transport, taxis, or private hire vehicles to the starting point.

A special, unique and immersive programme for participants to step into the vibrant and diverse world and sound of religions in Singapore. A Constant Reminder to Everyone here in Singapore

A personal note from myself, also a constant reminder to everyone here in Singapore. We must not take our peace, stability and harmony for granted. We must not let racial differences divide us, we need to do more, to learn, understand and know more about other religions in Singapore.

What is Rainbow Connection II all about?

Rainbow Connection II is co-created by local artist Lee Yun Qin and underserved communities. This outdoor installation comprises a total of 500 suspended solar light modules made from up cycled cookie containers and solar lights. Each and every individual light module is unique, yet they come together to form a gorgeous sight when lit up at night, scattering and spreading prismatic projections all around. 

Watch closely as each light module gently rotate and sway in the wind, bringing this rainbow, colourful and creative artworks installation to life through the dynamic play of shadows, lights and colours.

“In the Woods” and In the Deep”

Rainbow Connection II’s light module units are designed and individually painted by beneficiaries from social service agency Brighton Connection based on two themes, “In the Woods” and “In the Deep”. Through art and creativity, we can unite the community together through the artworks,  portraying the social fabric that holds individuals together, painting a picture of solidarity amidst diversity. 

After Rainbow Connection II finished its tour of duty to be shining light at the MHC fountain, they will travel into the heartland communities at MacPherson estate and Somerset Youth Park later this year.

Mr Alvin Tan, Deputy Chief Executive (Policy & Community), National Heritage Board (NHB), said, “The installation is part of NHB’s and MHC’s ongoing accessibility efforts to strengthen community connection by working with local artists to engage underserved communities to showcase their works. In this case, we decided to collaborate and create an installation that would reflect our collective hope for a better future for Singaporeans and for Singapore as we further ease COVID-19 community measures.”

Photo tips and ideal time to visit Rainbow Connection II at MHC

In the day, you can view the light modules, each with its own unique individual design, drawing and painting. I recommend visiting in the late afternoon/evening time when it’s not too hot, observe the direction where the sun is setting and keep a lookout for the light rays that would shine through the artworks, giving them a glorious aura and evening glow.

When the sun sets, the skyline would start to change, my favourite blue hour time is here. At this juncture, the light modules would slowly start to light up and come to life! Observe from a short distance away and you can photograph Rainbow Connection II in the foreground, along with MHC, the majestic Sultan Mosque and bustling Kampong Glam in the background. 

Do not miss out connecting with this Rainbow Connection II! You have to slowly enter into the rainbow and walk through this rainbow journey, please be gentle and careful, safety first and do take care of the artworks!

As Singapore starts to fully open up again with the easing of the COVID-19 safety measures, the whole society went through a lot during the past two years. Rainbow Connection II presents a united front through artworks, colours and lights, beacons of rainbow surrounding and connecting us together in solidarity, in the battle against COVID-19 over the past two years as well as making it through and getting out united together. 

Since Rainbow Connection II at MHC ends on 29th May 2022, coinciding with May the 4th Be With You, therefore I would like to wish May The Rainbow Connection II Be With You!

And the duck replied, “Let’s visit the Heritage Institution together!” 

Security Ah Meow said, “No worries, you folks go and explore Malay Heritage Centre, I will take care of you and look out for your folks there! I may look cute and chubby, don’t worry, I won’t steal your attention and limelight, ok?” 

Off they went, making their presence and appearance, attracting lots of attention and limelight from the visitors to Malay Heritage Centre. The young kids and the big kids are enjoying it!

Prior to this “bring LOVE everywhere” test walk 2 on 6th November 2021, I recently visited Malay Heritage Centre recently to photograph an earlier light artworks by VSE on display. Malay Heritage Centre had collaborated with Very Small Exhibition to light up the facade of its main building in different hues of blue in support of World Mental Health Day on 10th October 2021, while Malay Heritage Centre’s annex buildings were lighted up with the art collective’s signature neon colour lights.

After photographing a beautiful sunset at East Coast Park, Belinda and myself waited for Very Small Exhibition to arrive at East Coast Park White Jetty. From a distance, you can’t miss the bright and colourful 4 letter words “LOVE” making its way into the East Coast Park heartlands. 

This marked the start of an hour of interaction with the LOVE light artwork, doing light painting around the LOVE artwork, bringing them into a new dimension and realm, with supporters coming down to pen their love messages on the LOVE sticker and pasting them on the LOVE light artwork. 

Those moments were bright and colourful, spreading love, and asking ourselves, what is love, what does it mean to you, what are the messages that you would like to write down and send to your family, loved ones, relatives and friends? It was a quiet moment for me, and for some of us too, as we reflect on LOVE, its importance, relevance and how we can spread the message of LOVE, especially during this past close to two years (and counting) of great difficulties to our daily living and work due to the ongoing global pandemic. Many of us suffered in many different ways or another, some more than others. How can LOVE plays a part to help people in whatever ways possible during this great difficulty period that has affected us mentally, emotionally and financially? 

During a quiet moment inside me, I was immersed in creating the light painting while Belinda was photographing my light painting artworks, my heart was thinking about this topic too. As I was penning down my message for “bring LOVE everywhere”, I asked myself:

Q:What is Love? 

A: Love is of Fate and Time.

Love is of Fate and Time, I wrote and published a photo story article “Fate and Time” back in June 2021, my article title and the story inside speaks for itself, my heartfelt answer to the question above. That period of time, coupled with other situations happening concurrently, was a very down period. For those who wish to know what could have happened, this paragraph would shed more light.     

While Belinda and myself were at East Coast Park White Jetty, we got to know supporters who were also waiting for Very Small Exhibition “bring LOVE everywhere”. Nice to meet cheryllovescake and dototo13! They joined us in our light painting photography shoot too! We connected via Instagram later, after Very Small Exhibition continued with their journey along East Coast Park. 

Through Belinda and cheryllovescake sharing on their Instagram posts and stories, their sharing of love messages as well as from classic love songs, they are heartwarming, positive and encouraging, something that is very much needed during this time for many of us out there facing our own unique challenges and difficulties, in our ongoing battle against this global pandemic. Love can give us great hope, warmth and confidence, love can also hurt us and affect us. 

Spinning out some love ballads from my Spotify, these classic LOVE rock ballads pop into my mind, “All You Need is Love” by Beatles, “More Than Words” by Extreme, “Love is not the Way” by Saigon Kick and one of my favourite songs by Queen “Love Of My Life”. Not forgetting, “温柔”, ”擁抱“, “心中無別人” from another of my favourite rock bands 五月天!   

Do support local artists whenever possible, Pay-It-Forward and Pass-It-On, spread the word for them, giving them more publicity and awareness. I would give them a shout out, cover their stories and artworks as and when I am able to do so. Throughout the years writing and publishing photo stories here on my TGH Photography and Travel portal/blog, I met a number of creative, talented and passionate local artists through various events such as i Light Singapore and Singapore Night Festival. 

In January 2022, Very Small Exhibition is challenging themselves to their limit, bringing LOVE one round around Singapore in 6 consecutive nights. Let’s all help to spread some LOVE, warmth and friendship together with Very Small Exhibition.

No matter what level and stage of Love you are at right now, that’s something we can all do together for a common good, let’s bring LOVE everywhere and unite together stronger, closer, care and help one another as we are still battling this global pandemic situation, a common goal as we seek the light at the end of the tunnel filled with love, joy and a return to a more normal life.

This Malay Heritage Centre x Very Small Exhibition support World Mental Health Day, marks the first time that VSE has lit up a National Monument. This will also be VSE longest ever “momentary” installation which typically lasts for a few hours to a few days. Visitor can visit MHC to view and enjoy this beautiful light-up from 10th October 2021 to end November 2021. MHC has extended the opening hours of its compound to 10pm daily. 

The subject on mental health, mental health awareness and mental health matters are areas that made me aware and concern about mental health. I went through a period whereby my mental and emotional health were not in a good shape and condition, especially in the past six months from May 2021. The ongoing global pandemic didn’t just affect my business, it also took a huge toll on me, my mental and emotional health. I wrote more in-depth on my personal experiences dealing and handling with mental health awareness in my article “World Mental Health Day 2021”.

We are in the midst of battling this ongoing global pandemic, we are not out of the woods yet. The situation is still very tough and difficult for many of us. I would like to encourage all of you to please take good care of yourself, your mental and emotional health well-being. Help each other, support each other, please be kind, please don’t judge. 

Let’s all unite together and we can make it through this global pandemic crisis better, stronger and more resilient.

Paw-verbs on the Lawn is Malay Heritage Centre latest installation, showcasing common Malay proverbs, highlighting how cats play a role in Malay literacy culture to deliver different forms of human behaviour and providing life long lessons. Paw-verbs on the Lawn is a collaboration between Malay Heritage Centre and Japanese artist Juno.

As a cat lover myself, I definitely have to visit and see for myself those kawaii neko-chan! It’s definitely worth a visit for all cat lovers! Those cat artworks not only depict our daily life, the proverbs written on the boards are educational and meaningful that we can learn from. 

All the cat artworks on display by Japanese artist Juno are so cute and adorable, you would feel that they are real and alive! They are also reflections of our daily life that you can relate to easily! As much as I want to share more kawaii 猫猫 artworks here, I would encourage you to visit Paw-verbs on the Lawn and have a purring meowing learning time at the Malay Heritage Centre! 

Paw-verbs on the Lawn artworks are on display on the lawn of the Malay Heritage Centre at Istana Kampong Gelam from 2nd March 2021 till 30th May 2021. CapitLand’s Raffles City Singapore has collaborated with Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) to launch the “Arts in the City: We Love SINGApore” exhibition in commemoration of Singapore Bicentennial as well as celebrating Singapore’s 54^th birthday this month of August 2019. This exhibition was launched by Guest-of-Honour President Halimah Yacob on 31^st July 2019, featuring over 200 figurines of Singapore’s iconic mascot for kindness and graciousness – Singa the Lion. At the launch of the exhibition, CapitaLand Hope Foundation (CHF), the philanthropic arm of CapitaLand, pledged S$300,000 to benefit six charities under President’s Challenge 2019.

This “Arts in the City: We Love SINGApore” exhibition brings together people from different walks of life in the local community to share their Singapore stories, their vision on what kindness and being gracious means to them. Through their unique and artistic painting, drawing, and craftwork, visitors can view, feel and also read about their stories on the paintings and designs on the 40cm tall three-dimensional Singa the Lion figurines.

President Halimah Yacob and her husband, Mr Mohamed Abdullah Alhabshee, both participated in this exhibition too, with their very own designs, a pair of President’s Challenge Singa the Lion figurines that were unveiled during the official launch of this exhibition.

A mix of companies, such as tenants from Raffles City Singapore and individuals have also contributed to the big line-up of Singa the Lion figurines on display at Raffles City Singapore. When you make your way up from City Hall MRT station towards Raffles City Singapore, you can spot them on Level 1, from 1^st to 28^th August 2019.

Members of the public can also participate and do their part for charity, spreading love, kindness and graciousness, for a good cause at the “Arts in the City: We Love SINGApore” exhibition. When you take photos at this exhibition and share it on Instagram with the official hashtags, #CapitaLand, #RCSArtsIntheCity, #RCSWeLoveSINGApore, #CHFPC, #BeGreaterSG, S$5 will be donated towards President’s Challenge. In addition, the five best photographs will stand to win 54,000 STAR$

If you like the drawing, colour and design of the Singa the Lion figurine and you are interested to adopt them, they can be yours at a minimum sum of S$88 each on a first-come-first-serve basis, subject to availability. All proceeds will go towards President’s Challenge.

Malay CultureFest 2018

This year’s Malay CultureFest 2018 focus on artistic expressions of devotion and faith, found throughout the Nusantara, in conjunction with the special exhibition titled, “Undangan ke Baitullah: Pilgrims’ Stories from the Malay World to Makkah / Kisah-kisah Haji dari Alam Melayu ke Makkah”

At the launch of the Malay CultureFest 2018, there was a musical drama performance that tell the stories of pilgrims from the Malay World, congregating together at Kampong Gelam, preparing for their steamship passage to Makkah, followed by the journey to Makkah. During the musical performance, the emotions and feelings of traveling far away for a long of time via steamship to fulfill their Haj pilgrimage, performed by the artistes, can be felt through their excellent singing and musical drama performance.

After the end of the musical performance, Mdm Halimah Yacob, President of the Republic of Singapore, went up to stage, along with distinguished guests to officially declare the opening of the Malay CultureFest 2018 and the special exhibition, “Undangan ke Baitullah: Pilgrims’ Stories from the Malay World to Makkah / Kisah-kisah Haji dari Alam Melayu ke Makkah”.

Taking place from 12^th October to 28^th October 2018 on the weekends, there are a number of activities, including newly commissioned performances, talks and workshops taking place during Malay CultureFest 2018. More information can be found on the Malay Heritage Centre website and Facebook Page.

Special Exhibition: Undangan ke Baitullah: Pilgrims’ Stories from the Malay World to Makkah / Kisah-kisah Haji dari Alam Melayu ke Makkah

This special exhibition brings visitors into walk back in time, the days when Singapore was a major and important trading hub and port of call for the region. Kampong Gelam played a significant role in the history of Singapore, as an important port town where Muslims from all over the Malay Archipelago would gather together and prepare for the onward and long journey by steamship to Makkah in the late 19^thCentury into the early 1970s.

I took a short and quick tour of this special exhibition after the official launch of the Malay CultureFest 2018, it was a bit of a rush for me to take some photos while understanding the meaning, significance, history and culture behind each artefact on display inside the galleries.

Undangan ke Baituallah, has a Southeast Asia perspective to this annual pilgrimage made by devoted Muslims, a global movement, which for many pilgrims, this would be a once-in-a-lifetime journey of faith and devotion.

The stories shared inside the galleries were touching and heartwarming, gave visitors from other races and religions, a better and more in depth understanding of the Haj pilgrimage that the Muslims undertake, how it had changed from the 19^th Century to the modern days.

I would return and visit this special exhibition again and hope to share more insights into this special exhibition, “Undangan ke Baitullah: Pilgrims’ Stories from the Malay World to Makkah / Kisah-kisah Haji dari Alam Melayu ke Makkah”
