Ngee Ann Photographic Exhibition (NAPE)

NAPE was established in 2005, an annual exhibition organised by NACC to showcase the worlds and talents of local photographers and to promote photographic arts in Singapore. This provides an open platform for photographers of all backgrounds to present their best works, regardless of age, race  or religion.

There are two public entry categories for NAPE 2026: Open (for participants aged 21 years and above), and Student (for participants aged 10-20 years old). The theme for NAPE 2026 is “Open”. Submission of entries is free of charge.

Submissions are open until 12th April 2026 (Sunday). The NAPE 2026 will be held from 13th to 23rd June 2026 (closed on Sundays) at LASALLE College of the Arts.

Each year, The Ngee Ann Kongsi will acquire selected works from the exhibition to expand its Permanent Arts Collection, demonstrating its continued support for local photographers. Vis this broader public participation, NAPE 2026 seeks to inject fresh ideas and creativity into Singapore’s photography scene.

All submissions will be reviewed by an esteemed panel of advisers, and shortlisted photography works will be exhibited. 

In the year 2025, the 20th NAPE generated strong interest, receiving over 1,020 entries submitted by more than 570 participants – a notable increase from the 700 entries and 416 participants received in 2024.

In year 2025, I participated in the 20th Ngee Ann Photographic Exhibition 2025 (NAPE 2025), this was my first time entering, and I was really delighted that my photograph submission was selected for the 20th NAPE! Year 2025 was also an important year, it was Singapore’s 60th year (SG60) celebrations, thus making it more significant for my visual storytelling journey.

Get Up Close and Personal with Giant Insects at ArtScience Museum 

Insects: Microsculptures Magnified is making its Southeast Asia debut at ArtScience Museum on 17th January 2026, get up and personal with giant insects, with images towering up to 7 feet high. This exhibition showcases larger-than-life realm of insects, observe the beauty and intricacy of the insects forms far beyond what the naked eye can perceive.

“Insects: Microsculptures Magnified is ArtScience Museum’s first exhibition on insects. It invites audiences to reconsider these often-overlooked creatures as complex, beautifully structured, and essential to life on Earth. Created in collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History and enriched by scientific research from Singapore institutions including Nanyang Technological University, the National University of Singapore, and A*STAR, the exhibition brings global perspectives into dialogue with local discovery. The exhibition reveals how in Singapore’s forests and laboratories, scientists are making discoveries that sound almost unbelievable—beetles that clean ecosystems, cicadas that inspire futuristic materials, and bugs never before seen by science. The exhibition speaks directly to Singapore’s active nature and wildlife photography communities, inviting them to look more closely at the insect world,” said Honor Harger, Vice President of ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands. 

Extraordinary Large-scale Insects Photography by Levon Biss

Through the lens of award-winning British photographer Levon Biss, visitors can observe the microscopic details of each insect, that are transformed into mind-blowing, eye-catching, and captivating visual up close counters with insects world. 

Widely regarded as one of the leading macro photographers of his generation, Levon Biss macro photography is known for his meticulous images of insects, seeds, fruits and botanical forms, life to monumental scale. By magnifying insect life to monumental scale, his photography works invites a renewed sense of attention to the intricacy of nature ecosystem that one often overlooks. 

His pioneering photographic technique captures what entomologists refer to as an insect’s “micro sculpture”, from the exterior armour of the insect, to its velvet-like textures and saw-toothed mandibles, to the finely pigmented scales that define the amazing diversity of the insect world.

“The opportunity to display Microsculpture at ArtScience Museum is without doubt a highlight for the project and one that I could never have imagined when photographing the first insect. It is hugely satisfying to see the images enjoyed by different audiences around the world and it is clear evidence of a public appreciation and curiosity for these incredible creatures,” said Levon Biss. 

“Each photograph is created from over 8,000 individual images using a bespoke photo rig and microscope lenses. This achieves extreme levels of detail, allowing visitors to experience and appreciate microscopic textures and adaptations that would otherwise be lost to the naked eye. It’s both a technical challenge and an opportunity to celebrate the ingenuity of life at a tiny scale, a mixture of entertainment and education. By bringing these minute forms to monumental size, the exhibition invites viewers to look closely, to wonder, and care about the beauty and significance of these ingenious creatures we share this planet with,” he added. 

Insects: Microsculptures Magnified

This exhibition is created in collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History, featuring 37 monumental, high-magnification portraits of insects from the Oxford University Museum of Natural History’s collection. The meticulous details of the insects world microscopic forms are the key spotlights, observe the breathtaking details and clarity, the textures and anatomical structures that are often remain invisible, even to close observers.

First presented at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History in 2016, ArtScience Museum has expanded upon the original exhibition to incorporate specimens from local institutions, including Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum’s Zoological Reference Collection, Nanyang Technology University (NTU) Asian School of the Environment’s Tropical Ecology and Entomology Lab and Blackcrow Taxidermy & Art.

Cutting-edge Scientific Research from Singapore

Insects: Microsculptures Magnified exhibition also features cutting-edge scientific research from Singapore, showcasing exciting new research from Singapore’s scientific community, revealing how insect discoveries here are shaping fields from ecology to engineering. 

Scientists from NTU School of the Environment’s Tropical Ecology and Entomology Lab are pioneering fieldwork on native dung beetles, uncovering the hidden diversity and ecological roles of these insects and building foundational knowledge for conservation in tropical urban landscapes.

At A*STAR Institute of Bioengineering and Bioimaging, researchers are translating the remarkable nanoscale textures of cicada wings into cutting-edge self-cleaning, anti-microbial surfaces, showcasing how nature’s designs can inspire nex-generation materials. 

This show also showcases the discovery of a new species of plant bug, Campylomma Singapura, documented by researchers at the National University of Singapore, giving visitors a chance to see and learn about a species previously unknown to science.

My NAPE 2025 Journey

I am hugely honoured and very happy to be a part of NAPE 2025, I have a photography artwork selected to be showcased along with other talented local Singapore photographers and their amazing photography works. This is my short visual story of my maiden journey in NAPE 2025.

My Maiden Submission for Ngee Ann Photographic Exhibition 

While I have heard of Ngee Ann Photographic Exhibition, and visited a few editions previously, I didn’t thought about entering in my earlier photography years, as I wasn’t too confident, still learning and gaining my photography experiences.

Over the years, as I gained a lot more experiences in my photography, I also started to enter more and various photography contests and competitions. When I saw this year’s 30th NAPE 2025 Call For Entries, I am thinking deep inside me, why not go for it?

Making the decision to proceed, Year 2025 became my maiden submission and entry for Ngee Ann Photographic Exhibition. 

Theme: Open

The theme for 20th NAPE 2025 is “Open”, while this theme is indeed very open and wide for interpretation, the organisers recommended themes related to SG60 or The Ngee Ann Kongsi’s 180th anniversary. 

Digging through my archives of photographs taken in 2024, I shortlisted a few potential photography works of mine for submission to NAPE 2025, before deciding on my final two photographs for submission.

Just like the theme “Open”, I entered with an open mind, eyes and heart, let’s see where NAPE 2025 brings me.  

From shortlisted to NAPE 2025 opening 

Around the end of April 2025, I received an email informing that one of my submissions has been shortlisted for NAPE 2025. At that moment, I was jumping with joy (inside me)! Thereafter, I had to follow the next few steps/instructions for getting my selected photography artwork ready, printed and delivered for NAPE 2025.

Once that were completed, it’s patiently waiting for 14th June 2025 to arrive, attending the NAPE 2025 opening ceremony, viewing my photography artwork titled, “Of Red and White Celebrations at GBTB Lighting Up Marina Bay Singapore” on display, together with fellow local Singapore photographers works at NAPE 2025.

30th NAPE 2025 Opening Ceremony & Opening Day

The 30th NAPE 2025 Opening Ceremony took place on 14th June 2025, a day of local Singapore photography community gathering together. It was great to catch up with fellow photography friends, chatting over everything photography related. 

After the formal speeches and presenting Ngee Ann Photographer of the Year 2025 award to Mr Lim Leong Kiat, NAPE 2025 was officially declared opened with the ribbon cutting ceremony! After that, guests and attendees began to visit NAPE 2025 exhibition, finding out where their photography artwork is displayed before walking around and checking out all the amazing photography works on display at NAPE 2025. Also a heartfelt congratulations to all participants of NAPE 2025! Great job and well done to all!

A big thank you to my friends who came down to NAPE 2025 Opening, I truly appreciate the support. I would like to invite you to come on down to LASALLE College of the Arts and visit 30th NAPE 2025!

Later in the afternoon, I attended the NAPE 2025 Opening Special Talk by Mr Lim Leong Kiat, on “Through the Lens: The Art of Travel Photography”, listening to his interesting and informative travel photography sharing. As a travel photographer myself, Mr Lim’s choice of digital MF cameras for his travel photography is of great interest to me, should I hop on the digital MF cameras?

Being able to participate in NAPE 2025 is a humbling experience, also a huge honour for me, the recognition, for my photography artwork to be selected from over 1,020 entries, from more than 570 photographers that participated in NAPE 2025.

The feelings and euphoria when your photography artwork is printed, framed and displayed in a photography exhibition, at the 30th NAPE 2025, the jubilation and immense pride, this is priceless and very memorable!

Water for Peace – Create an effect

Water for peace, everyone of us has a part to play to part in this. Together in unity as a world, we can each create an effect that combines together, our peace and harmony, to make things good for the benefit for Earth where we are living on.

Water must not turn into a resource that human beings have to fight for drinking and using, this is a human right, an integral part of our everyday aspect of life. On World Water Day 2024, the whole world needs to unite around this precious commodity water. Let’s use Water for Peace, and change the world into a more stable and prosperous future.

World Water Day 2024 with my Canon visual storytelling

Through my Canon visual storytelling exploration and documentation over the years into nature, great outdoors, rivers, beaches, mangrove wetlands, parks, coastal areas and the beach, photographing, documenting and observing the diversity of nature, wildlife and travel sceneries of the world that we live in.

From the otters living, hunting for food and moving along our waterways in Singapore, the migration birds visiting our shores, the coastal areas and sea around us that cements Singapore as a global transportation/shipping hub, and also how Singapore built her resilience of water supply over the decades. Not just the wildlife, the land, nature, and us human beings, we all depend on water to survive. 

This mesmerising “In a Rainbow” light artwork display by House of VSE at Alexandra Point Tunnel has also transformed into blue for World Water Day 2024 from 11th to 22nd March. Through House of VSE light artworks, you can make an impact, spread the word and awareness through arts and creativity. 

This is also the time to remind ourselves that water is an invaluable and finite resource, we have to play our part to ensure Water for Peace. Singapore is also marking with its own Singapore World Water Day 2024 by PUB Singapore’s National Water Agency, playing both local and international roles to advocate Water for Peace for World Water Day 2024.

First and foremost, to my friends, networks, brands, agencies in the photography, travel, heritage, creative and arts industry, I promise to clear my backlogs that I promised earlier in November and December 2023. I was kind of fatigued while juggling on a few different fronts and concurrently preparing for year 2024. 

I would be sharing about my year 2023 in review for my photography (business and personal), travel, creative sectors in arts and writing, heritage sectors in history, heritage, conservation and preservation segments. Next up would be my yearly theme for 2024 for my photography, travel creative and heritage sectors, a different method and approach that I have been using for a few years, something different and away from the usual goals and objectives setting approach.

The year 2024 is paved with economic uncertainties and challenges, geo-political tensions across different regions around the world is worrying with potential pitfalls and spillovers in both political and business areas. This year 2024 might be more challenging for some of us, it might give us new opportunities for us as well. 

In 2024, I look forward to more in-depth, lively and interesting discussions, interviews and networking sessions with photographers, filmmakers, the folks from the travel, tourism and hospitality industry, brands and organisations that I am working with, as well as content creators and artists.

As a F1 and motorsports fan, also a sports/motorsports photographer myself, I love watching F1 motorsports racing action on television. For my hometown Singapore GP, my last attendance was in 2015, after a few years gap, I am back enjoying F1 racing in town for Singapore GP 2023. I am also a technology geek/writer myself (check out my TGH Technology and Business portal/blog), I am also amazed by the technology setup behind the scenes powering F1 action on the ground, on broadcast channels, media outlets and on social media platforms.

Thanks to Lenovo Singapore hosting a media session on Friday 15th September 2023, I get to know more in-depth about Formula 1 x Lenovo Technology – Bringing F1 fans on a thrilling ride beyond the grandstand. Listening first hand and understanding how Lenovo Technology is powering F1, from Pete Samara, Director of Strategic Technical Ventures, Formula 1, Ken Wong, Executive VP and President, Solutions and Services Group, Lenovo, and Sumir Bhatia, President of Asia Pacific, Infrastructure Solutions Group, I couldn’t ask for more, from a F1 fan, a motorsports photographer, and a technology writer/geek myself!

Millions of data points stored to capture the best broadcast

When you are watching F1 motorsports action from your television, technology gadgets, on social media/internet, do you notice the huge volume of data that F1 generates with each individual car generating millions of datapoint across all races.

TGH Photography x Canon EOS R6 Mark II Explorer Series Production

The Canon EOS R6 Mark II has recently been added to my photography setup, with my Canon EOS 1D X Mark II making way for my new camera. Although I missed my Canon EOS 1D X Mark II, the iconic 1D series that I started to build my photography and visual storytelling. 

The Canon EOS R6 Mark II is amazing with its fast and accurate AF, high FPS, high ISO level control and quality, excellent sensor and processing engine. While I do miss the battery grip of the 1D series, the overall excellence and quality of the Canon EOS R6 Mark II is not making me miss my 1D series as much as I would thought I would be. 

Exploring and Visiting Arts

Exploring and visiting arts around Singapore with the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, it had been a great form of artistic enjoyment and therapy, away from my writing, social media and photography work. Igniting my spark on a new wave at i Light Singapore 2023, SYSNMH Wan Qing Dragon Boat Festival Open House 2023, following House of VSE Your Neighbour Artist Exhibition around Singapore (and still ongoing), heritage and cultural events Qixi Festival and NHB Racial Harmony Day 2023. 

Exploring my own backyard

The months of June to July 2023 are usually scheduled with NDP 2023 rehearsals taking place on the weekends, allowing us to photograph the NDP 2023 rehearsals action and fireworks taking place around the Marina Bay area. The NDP 2023 rehearsals were an excellent opportunity to put the Canon EOS R6 Mark II to the test.

I was also exploring the new HDB blocks in my neighbourhood, discovering new sky parks and views. Besides that, I was also chasing sunsets and super moon with a super telephoto zoom lens Sigma 150-600mm.  

Of course, getting into outdoors and nature, it had always been a form of therapy and relaxation for me. Sometimes, adding wildlife photography into my outdoors outing and exploration together as well. 

Always on the lookout for value for money 2nd hand camera accessories  

I am always on the lookout for value for money 2nd hand camera accessories and peripherals. Some of them were slowly added over time to build up my setup, while some were replacements for my photography accessories.  

I discovered this brand Wotancraft not too long ago, I admired its quality, as well as how much consideration they placed on the designs and concepts around photographers and travellers. I got myself a Wotancraft Trooper (Medium) as my own birthday gift earlier in Q1 2023.

I had invested in a number of Think Tank products, although I gave away my Shape Shifter version 1, I found a Naked Think Tank Shape Shifter 17 v2.0 at a good price and I quickly grabbed this opportunity. Since I am expanding my Think Tank setup, I have also added more different types of Think Tank pouches along the way. 

Leofoto – A brand that I have also discovered and looking into. They have a great range of quality products for photographers. The first product that I got was the Leofoto MC-50 clamp. Moving forward, I am planning to add a few more products from Leofoto!

“Forget it and move on”

I took a break from social media for a few days, as I was feeling disappointed in something that only very few people will know what happened. 

“Forget it and move on”, an advice that was shared with me. 

Therefore, I will continue with my ongoing work, craft and visual storytelling, seeking progression and improvements in my journey.

i Light Singapore 2023 Theme – A New Wave

i Light Singapore 2023, presented by DBS, theme for this year is A New Wave. Using light not not just as a wave that expands and radiates energy in all directions. it’s also a language, a form of communication that give rise to a range of emotions. 

i Light Singapore 2023 will explore the colour “Blue”, when you explore the various artworks on display around Marina Bay. The Blue colour wavelength is strong in the Force that brings you cool tones, vibes and different states of emotion – of calm and serenity.

i Light Singapore photography and exploration tips 

• You might want to bring your tripod along for long exposure shots composition of the artworks, the choice is yours
• Bring a few lenses – wide angle zoom and a mid telephoto zoom lenses would give you different views and perspectives when engaging and photographing the artworks 
• Catch the light artwork projection on the ArtScience Museum during the evening blue hour time, that gives you a different background colour and feel 
• Wear comfortable shoes (You would be walking quite a fair bit)
• Wear comfortable clothes (It can be pretty hot and humid at times)
• Bring a water bottle and remember to hydrate
• Split up your i Light Singapore visit over a few nights, maybe one visit on a weekend, the other visit can be on a weekday

Ignite Your Spark on your DBS passport journey at i Light Singapore 2023, you can easily access just by scanning a QR code with your smartphone. An interactive journey begins for you whereby you would be challenged to collect 4 digital stamps on your DBS Passport, by participating in various experiences at Blumiwave and within the DBS Zone.

Blumiwave at Mist Walk is an artwork that aims to raise awareness of blue energy, an alternative renewable energy source that is harnessed from the sea and river waters. Created by local artists from DP Design, the “crashing” waves of Blumiwave are made of a carefully weaved fabric of safety nets and scaffolding from salvaged from construction sites. 

All plastics used in the construction of Blumiwave will recycled by Magorium after this festival is over. Magorium is a social enterprise supported by DBS Foundation, they convert plastic waste into sustainable construction called “NEWBitumen”, which can be used to pave eco-roads. “NEWBitumen” was also used in paving the driveway of DBS Newton Green, Singapore’s 1st Zero building by a bank.

Visiting and photographing i Light (Singapore / Marina Bay) journeys since 2010 had been an interesting visual storytelling journey for me with my camera, capturing the growth, changes, not just in Marina Bay Singapore, on the areas of sustainability and recycling and artworks depicting those key areas that the world is looking at, and having a stronger and more urgent emphasis in this current climate.

I hope that i Light Singapore 2023 can Ignite Your Spark on A New Wave inside you in the areas of sustainability, sustainable living and habits in our daily life and work.
