Canon announced EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM telephoto zoom lens

Canon, a world leader in digital imaging, is proud to introduce the EF-M55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM; the long-awaited telephoto zoom lens for its EOS M series of cameras. The addition of this telephoto zoom lens complements the existing range of wide-angle, pancake and standard zoom lenses, allowing for coverage across the entire zoom spectrum while still retaining the compact nature of the EOS M system.

“We are proud to announce the launch of the powerful yet compact EF-M55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM telephoto zoom lens. This addition to the EF-M line of lenses will empower EOS M users with the freedom and convenience of expressing creativity in their shots from a greater variety of angles, said Edwin Teoh, Assistant Director, Consumer Business Marketing, Canon Singapore. “Canon will continue to stay committed to developing new technologies to meet the demands of our EOS M users.”

Compact and lightweight
The EF-M55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM offers a fine balance between telephoto power and portability. While the new EF-M55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM shares many features and attributes with the larger EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens, it is significantly reduced in size, measuring merely 86.5mm and weighing approximately 260g, to suit the compact EOS M range. True to the spirit of the EOS M series, users will be able to achieve high image quality without compromising on portability.

High image quality

Designed to deliver high image quality, the EF-M55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM efficiently arranges the aspherical and UD lenses within its body to achieve an increase in contrast and minimal color blurring. Chromatic aberration is thus effectively corrected; achieving excellent image quality known only to be delivered by Canon. Additionally, the EF-M55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM’s 7-blade circular aperture conveniently brings out the soft focus effect often desired when shooting portrait photography with its distinctive circular blurs.

Built-in image stabilizer for clear and sharp photographs

The EF-M55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM features a powerful Image Stabilizer (IS) unit that automatically determines the current movement of the lens and selects an appropriate IS mode to counter the challenge of shooting without shaking, which comes with capturing sharp images from long distances. This ultimately results in sharper images, even when zoomed in, due to the advantage of a shutter speed 3.5* steps faster which aids in shake correction.

Movie recording advantage

Taking into consideration the importance that users are placing on movie recording functions these days, the EF-M55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM has been optimized for video shooting with the inclusion of a lead screw type stepping motor (STM) drive and a rear focus system that allows a silent and smooth auto-focus process which also intelligently tracks subjects.

Price and Availability

The EF-M55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM will be available in early July 2014 at Canon’s authorized dealers at the recommended retail price of $499.
