The Canon PhotoMarathon 2024 Theme – “Every Lens, Every Age”, is all about celebrating diversity and creativity in every shot. Whether you are a seasoned professional or a budding enthusiast, Canon Singapore invites shutterbugs of all ages and skill levels to join in Canon PhotoMarathon 2024 and to reignite their passion for photography.

Canon PhotoMarathon offers participants the opportunity to capture the beauty of Singapore through their unique perspectives. The competition has a two-hour submission time frame for each theme, this promises a fun, dynamic and thrilling photography experience, challenging participants to think on their feet and push their creative boundaries.

Exciting prizes await the winners!

Canon PhotoMarathon 2024 participants have the chance to win an incredible array of prizes worth up to $47,000, with the top 3 prizes in both the Open and Student categories featuring Canon’s latest photography gear. 

In the Open Category, the grand prize is a coveted EOS R6 Mark II Kit paired with a PIXMA TS8370 printer – with a combined value of over $4,000. Other winners will also be rewarded with Canon kits, allowing them to fuel their passion for photography.

In the Student Category, young photographers will stand a chance to win an EOS R8 Kit with a PIXMA E4570 printer, valued at more than $2,500, as the first prize. Winners in second and third places will also receive equipment that inspires and empowers their creative journey.

More than just a photography competition, it’s a reunion for the photography community

Canon PhotoMarathon 2024 is more than just a photography competition, it’s a reunion for the photography community. As a participant of 9 Canon PhotoMarathons over the years, while I also competed and submitted my photography entries, this was also a time to catch up with photographer friends. You can read my Canon PhotoMarathon stories and memories over the years here on my TGH Photography and Travel website! 

This event is a great chance for photographers to reconnect, share their passion, and inspire each other. Take this opportunity to celebrate the fundamental reason of why we love to take photographs, to capture and preserve priceless moments and memories.

“Since the onset of COVID-19, the way we live and work have undergone drastic changes. However, one thing that remained unchanged is the capability of storytelling  through images.,” said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore. “With this new CPM 2.0, we have elevated the event to the digital platform, allowing contestants to continue taking part in a longstanding tradition here at Canon Singapore, whilst showcasing their reinvented and reimagined perspectives.” 

Canon PhotoMarathon was launched nearly two decades ago, the objective was to cultivate an interest in photography, while challenging photography enthusiasts to push the boundaries. This has always been at the heart of its annual tradition. With strong branding and loyalty built over the years, bringing Canon PhotoMarathon online will allow Canon to continuously engage the photography community through this active outreach.

The usual Canon PhotoMarathon is a one-day event, which was last held in 2019. Due to the pandemic, CPM 2.0 seeks to allow participants to use the new three month duration of the contest to capture changes in their daily lives. Starting on 6th December 2021, Canon PhotoMarathon 2.0 will spur participants to reinvent their perspectives, with three major themes spread across the contest duration.

Canon PhotoMarathon 2.0 Theme for December

For the month of December, the theme will be Reinvent Light.

It’s now up to you contestants, you are highly encouraged to interpret the themes from a new perspective, showcasing your stories through photography.

Through the three-month contest period, participants can look forward to tips and tricks from the panel of experienced photographer judges as well as ‘Tonight with CIA’ webinars on Canon Singapore’s Facebook page for a better shot at claiming the coveted prizes.

There will be three winners for each themed month, with the top three prizes as follows:

Winners from all three themes will be announced in March 2022. Apart from the top prizes, there will also be special prizes from our partners, to be unveiled at a later date.

It’s great to see Canon PhotoMarathon coming back, I had been regularly participating Canon PhotoMarathon since 2008 (My Canon PhotoMarathon participation in the years 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019) when I first participated in Canon PhotoMarathon, till year 2019 that was the last physical attendance Canon PhotoMarathon event. On a personal note, Canon PhotoMarathon 2019 was my 9th year participating in Canon PhotoMarathon! In the year 2020, Canon PhotoMarathon 2020 was suspended due to the ongoing global pandemic.

Canon PhotoMarathon used to a great time for catching up with fellow photography friends that you might not have met for a while. However, this ongoing global pandemic drastically changed our life, our work and daily living. While Canon PhotoMarathon 2.0 is going to be very different from the usual Canon PhotoMarathon that we knew over the years, we can still have our own photography fun, catching up with fellow photography friends and photographing the monthly theme while challenging our creativity and photography.

However, please remember to do things in a safe manner, follow the social distancing rules and numbers restrictions put in place by the authorities.

A highly and much-anticipated photography event held annually organised by Canon, the Canon PhotoMarathon 2020 edition would be the 18th edition and also be my 10th year participating in Canon PhotoMarathon since my maiden debut in 2008. Canon PhotoMarathon had always been challenging, tiring yet fun and great to catch up with photography friends and partners. Photographers push themselves beyond their boundaries and creativity in a one-day event, they were given a variety of themes and a time line to photograph and submit their entry for that particular theme.

Looking back at my last year Canon PhotoMarathon 2019  participation, it was something different for me since I was also there to help out as a EOS World Community Ambassador and as a participant too. For those who wish to know more about (my personal) Canon PhotoMarathon editions over the years (2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019), check out the photos, stories and experiences that I shared on my photography and travel portal/blog!

The COVID-19 situation has caused massive impacts and disruptions to the world, we all have to stand together be united. Canon has decided that suspending Canon PhotoMarathon 2020 is of utmost importance for the the safety and wellbeing of all photography enthusiasts. With previous editions reflecting the unifying spirit of the Canon PhotoMarathon participants, Canon stands with the community and wants to thank all supporters and photography aficionados for their unwavering support over the years.

Photographers, do continue photographing, documenting and sharing, let’s hope the COVID-19 situation would be brought under control soon and life can get back to normal!

This year 2019 is a special milestone year for Singapore, celebrating Singapore’s Bicentennial celebrations. Therefore, Canon PhotoMarathon XVII 2019 Singapore supports Singapore Bicentennial celebrations by going into the heartlands at Our Tampines Hub, with the three competition themes linked closely to the heartlands. With 1,549 photography enthusiasts participating, this had been another fun and interesting year of Canon PhotoMarathon Singapore!

It was a fun carnival setup at Our Tampines Hub, with bright and colourful booths setup by Canon Singapore along with their sponsors. The EOS World community had a booth there too, manned by the community managers, community ambassadors and council members. I was there helping out (official booth duties from 9am to 11am) while I am also participating in my 9th edition of Canon PhotoMarathon Singapore! For me personally, participating in Canon PhotoMarathon Singapore is an avenue to have fun yet challenging my photography in a leisure context (a break away from my commercial photography works), this was also a time for catch up and networking with photography friends from the EOS World and fellow photography friends.

What were the three themes for Canon PhotoMarathon 2019 Singapore? What were the photographs that I submitted for this competition?

The three themes were interesting, related very closely to the heartlands of Singapore since it was held in the heartlands of Our Tampines Hub. There was no “lucky spin” to choose the theme, it had been planned in advance with the heartlands and communities in mind.  The themes were not the most difficult words to make your head spin when you go out and photograph, they were open to diverse interpretation by photographers.

Personally, it had always been fun, challenging and tiring, participating in Canon PhotoMarathon Singapore. I can now add 2019 to my list of years that I participated in Canon PhotoMarathon Singapore (2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019). 9 editions and still counting, even though I didn’t win any prizes, the friendship and networking with photographers had been great!

Adding another Canon PhotoMarathon Singapore footprint and memory to my adventures, photographs and stories!

What is the EOS World all about?

A thriving passionate photography (online and offline) community and portal in Singapore, where you can share your personal photography works, knowledge and skills, yet learn more about other photography  genres (that you might be keen to learn) through different articles, interviews and videos, contributed by the community members for the community.

My photography journeys and adventures with EOS World

I remembered joining EOS World when they first started a few years back, joining their various events, gatherings, participating in photography contests and activities over the years, contribtuing articles and getting featured. From its humble beginnings, to their website revamps, I had been there and with them in this journey, from a small photography community to a thriving photography community today.

Personal EOS World milestones

From photographing Red Bull Dark Knights in 2013, featured as Member Spotlight/Month of Photojournalism in March 2014, shooting sports photography at Sports Hub in 2015, exploring heritage with my Canon EOS 1DX article in 2016 and appointed EOS World Community Ambassador in 2016.

Sometimes, photography can be lonely or you might not have that many friends that are as enthusiastic like you in taking photographs. Join EOS World and you can make new friends who are passionate in photography and sharing. If you are just starting your newbie photography adventures, the EOS World Community can be a great and ideal place to learn and improve your photography!

Over the years, I have made new photography friends in the EOS World Community. Although starting and running my own photography business from January 2017 took quite a bit of time and energy away from many other things (not just personal photography), I hope to strike a balance and continue helping out at the EOS World Community.

EOS World Community Ambassador 2018 (27^th October 2018 to 27^th October 2019)

I was appointed EOS World Community Ambassador for the period 27^th October 2018 to 27^th October 2019. First and foremost, I would like to thank Canon Singapore for this appointment and recognition.

Moving forward for my EOS World Community Ambassador 1 year Tour of Duty, I hope to balance my time, photography knowledge, skills, articles and sharing on my own photography business website, photography blog/portal and transfer them into the EOS World Community, sharing and making an impact to the other photographers.

Canon PhotoMarathon XVI Singapore was different from the past few editions that I participated in. They had a bright, colourful and refreshing concept, starting with the event t-shirt that is luminious green in colour (that looks a bit like the safety vest as pointed out by fellow photographer friend Daryl) that makes us stood out, very brightly and prominently from the crowds when the participants were out photographing their respective competition themes. In this edition of Canon PhotoMarathon XVI, Canon introduced a new ‘dusk’ challenge in the competition format for the first time. This will enable participants to capture a dynamic mix of both day and night scenes, putting their photography skills and creativity to the test.

Inside the Suntec Convention Centre event hall, the booths and stations were interactive and fun, bright and colourful, pretty engaging for the younger generation folks, beside the regular sponsors that had been supporting Canon PhotoMarathon. We had a radio DJ booth, ONE FM 91.3 making radio waves at Canon PhotoMarathon XVI.

Celebrities were also present at Canon PhotoMarathon XVI Singapore, gracing and supporting it, with Sora Ma and Joseph Schooling making their presence felt at the event, chatting and interacting with their supporters.  I had a good time chatting  and catching up with Sora! At the end of the Canon PhotoMarathon XVI Singapore, I completed my 8^thedition participating in this iconic photography competition that was born in Singapore and it has now spread to regional countries such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Brunei, Cambodia, China and Sri Lanka.

Although I didn’t win any prizes during my 8 editions of Canon PhotoMarathon that I participated in. It’s alright with me, participating in Canon PhotoMarathon is not just about winning  the wonderful prizes (although I would love to win a prize someday!) this is also about community, networking, catching up with Canon Imaging Academy, EOS World community and making new friends.

All these various aspects of Canon PhotoMarathon XVI experiences from photography to community, live up to Canon’s motto “Delighting You Always”. Remember to keep shooting, sharing and printing!

I made my maiden debut competing in Canon PhotoMarathon in the year 2008, followed by 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017. From the links, you can read my personal stories during my years of participation, including the various unique, interesting and challenging Canon PhotoMarathon themes during my seven years of participation!

Looking back at my different years of participation, they were some good memories, participating together with friends and taking photographs together in groups for the submission of the competition themes. There were also times when I shot alone, a time whereby I am able to challenge and push myself in the areas of photography creativity, shooting a photography theme under a limited timeline and pressure during the Canon PhotoMarathon competition format. Even though I never won anything during my years of participation, it had always been fulfiling and fun, observing other photographers point of view, how they compose and shoot their photographs based on the same competition themes.

No doubt this is a photography competition with very attractive prizes to be won, Canon PhotoMarathon had always been a fun community event in Singapore for photographers to gather, have fun, catch up, challenge themselves in a fun yet photography challenging competition. Over the past few years, I had seen the organisers making improvements and changes, this year’s Canon PhotoMarathon 2018 looks to be something special and refreshing, with a new competition format and also giving back to the community.

What makes Canon PhotoMarathon Singapore 2018 XVI special and different this year? Did you read about my earlier article on Canon Singapore announcement on their two sports sponsorship agreements, someone very special is going to make an appearance!

Who is coming down? Now, let me share more information below:

Back for its 16^th year, Canon PhotoMarathon XVI is slated on 28 July at Suntec City Convention Hall 401-402, from 9am to 10pm. This year, Canon is taking a step further by giving back to the community and also introducing exciting new elements such as a ‘dusk’ challenge in the competition format.

In line with Canon’s ongoing support of the local sporting scene, Canon has recently announced a partnership with Joseph Schooling, who will be present at the Canon PhotoMarathon XVI. Canon has also pledged to donate all event registration fees collected to The Straits Times Pocket Money Fund (STSPMF), a community project to fund school-going childrenfrom low-income families.

“This year, we would like to encourage the photography community to test their creative mettle and at the same time, contribute back to the community,” said Mr. Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Domestic Operations, Canon Singapore. “Canon PhotoMarathon is not just a competition of photography skills and creativity, it is also a test of one’s endurance and stamina. With Joseph Schooling present at this year’s competition, we hope that participants will be inspired by his tenacity and rigour to achieve big dreams, much like how he attained Singapore’s first Olympic gold medal.” 

Chase the Light, Day to Night

True to its name, Canon PhotoMarathon is a blend of photography and sports. For participants to cross the finishing line, both mental and physical endurance are required for the full-day competition.

While the format of the competition remains the same with three competition themes, this year’s event will kick off at a later timing of 11am with the announcement of the first theme. For the first time, Theme 3 will incorporate a ‘dusk’ challenge, which will be announced at 5pm and the closing submission time for this final theme will be at 8pm. This will enable participants to capture a dynamic mix of both day and night scenes, putting their photography skills and creativity to the test.

Participants will have three hours from the announcement to submit a photo which demonstrates a unique perspective in picture composition according to the assigned theme. Adding an additional element of surprise to the mix, participants will have a say in voting for one of the competition themes this year.

Top prizes for artistic creativity

There will be a total of more than S$50,000 worth of Canon products to be won. In addition, all registered participants will stand a chance to win a pair of Lufthansa air tickets to Munich in the lucky draw segment.

Apart from attractive category prizes, the Best of Show winners from the Open and Student categories will win an exclusive spot each in the Canon PhotoMarathon Asia Championship held in 2019, which is valued at more than US$5,000. The all-expenses paid trip will bring participants on an exclusive journey of awe-inspiring scenery, to explore various facets of photography under the tutelage of a professional photographer. The Championship will involve further theme challenges to select the champion among winners. 

Collaboration with Joseph Schooling

In support of Canon PhotoMarathon which seeks to inspire and bring the photography community closer, Joseph will be at the event to unveil one of the competition themes.

Synonymous to sports, which rallies our community closer together, photography has the powerful ability to transcend differences and connect people from all walks of life.

Giving Back for the Common Good

Kyosei, which means living and working together for the common good, lies at the heart of Canon’s corporate philosophy. In the spirit of this belief, all registration fees collected from Canon PhotoMarathon this year will be donated to the STSPMF. This is a community project started by The Straits Times in 2000, to provide pocket money to children from low income families to help them with school-related expenses.

In addition, a charity sales of limited edition prints, specially curated by The Straits Times photo desk and The Schooling Company, will be held from 20 to 26 July via shop.canon.com.sg/charity and all proceeds will be donated to STSPMF.

Personal Thoughts

Canon PhotoMarathon 2018 is just a few weeks away, time to rally and gather your fellow photographer friends to register together, come on down on 28^thJuly 2018 and be a part of Canon PhotoMarathon for the Community!

It’s not just about photography competition, wanting to win the attractive prizes, this is also about community and giving back, the photography community and the Singapore community coming together and being together through the fun and love of photography.

I am going for my no. 8^thCanon PhotoMarathon, it’s not so much of a photography competition for me, this is more of a photography community, networking with fellow professionals and gathering of old photography friends, making new photography friends, having fun and giving back to the Singapore community.

Now in its 15^th year, the Canon PhotoMarathon has spread her presence to other parts of Asia, with parallel competitions taking place in countries such as Brunei, Cambodia, China Mainland, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam!

On a personal note, Canon PhotoMarathon 2017 Singapore is my 7^th year (out of 15 years) participating (2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017) in this photography competition. It had always been interesting, challenging and tiring for me participating in it, pushing myself and my photography skills, knowledge and experiences, under pressure and time limits over all those years. Even though, I haven’t won any of the competitions, I always had fun and enjoyment, chatting with photographer friends, in some ways, it was a gathering and catch up with some of my photographer friends!

What were the three themes for Canon PhotoMarathon 2017? Here are the themes-

Theme 2 : Celebration

Theme 3 : Mysterious

From my personal experiences over the years participating in Canon PhotoMarathon, when the themes look/seem “easy”, that only means it can be pretty wide open to each photographer’s interpretation and ideas, or it can also mean that the theme might be a bit narrow and somehow a bit tricky. This is something unique, that makes Canon PhotoMarathon special, fun and challenging for an intense one day of photography competition under time limits and pressure.

Here are my submissions for the Canon PhotoMarathon 2017 Singapore. Reflecting back on my submissions:

I was a bit stuck for theme 2, thus that photograph was a bit more of an abstract style. Nevertheless, I am glad to push myself in a relaxed manner during the competition. The beauty of photography is that of each one of us have our own personal interpretation, conceptualisation and composition. This is also a time for me to reflect on the photographs that I took during the competition, how I can improve on them and learn from my experiences. Learning in photography never stops, no matter what level of photography you are in, whether amateur, serious enthusiast, freelance or professional.

In the 15^th edition of Canon PhotoMarathon 2017 Singapore, the organisers gave out a finisher medal and certificate of participation for participants that completed all three themes! Kudos to the Canon PhotoMarathon 2017 Singapore organising committee for making the 15^th edition special and fun!

Although I haven’t won anything prizes from the years that I had participated in Canon PhotoMarathon, I hope that my through my sharing of my stories and experiences over the years would help future Canon PhotoMarathon participants from Singapore, other parts of Southeast Asia and Asia in one small way or another!
