Between the Lines – The Chinese Cartoon Revolution
Have you ever thought of sketches/cartoons that played a role in a country’s history and revolution? Before I visited this special exhibition, Between the Lines – The Chinese Cartoon Revolution, this notion never occurred to me.

A collaboration between Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall and the Memorial Museum of 1911 Revolution in Guangzhou, this exhibition examines the links between the 1911 Revolution in China and the arrival of Chinese cartoons in Singapore.

As the saying goes, “A picture speaks a thousand words”, the satitical sketches on display inside this exhibition tell many stories that connects with the masses on the ground level, simple, direct and straight to the point. These cartoons soon became the groundwork tools for political change and revolutionary movement to end the Imperial rule in China.

While walking through this special exhibition, observing and understanding each cartoon, I am able to understand the meaning and message behind some of the cartoons before reading the short write up that comes together with the cartoon display.

For visitors who might not be versed in the Chinese language, although you have the English language write up and explaination, there might be some cartoons on display that you can guess and interpret correctly because the cartoon speaks to you through your eyes and into your heart.

Plan a trip to Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall and visit this special exhibition, this is definitely not the type of historical and cultural exhibition that you would usually associate with, the uniqueness and nature of cartoons that got themselves into the history and revolution of a nation.
